Gyotaku delivers straight-ahead, local Japanese fare, e.g. zaru soba, various bento with different protein options, e.g. salmon, butterfish, teri chicken, California roll, sashmi. Simply put, it's a family-friendly restaurant with familiar flavors, ample dedicated parking that wraps around the restaurant's perimeter, easy access to the downstairs area if you have elderly family members, and good value, especially if you can take advantage of the senior menu. (If you are frugal, be aware that on holidays, the usual reduced price menu specials don't apply.) It's also very easy to make reservations for smaller parties, either online or via phone. Meals generally come complete, unless notes: miso soup, tossed salad with a piece of imitation crab surimi, and your entree. I personally like their combination bento option with teri chicken, fresh and crisp shrimp and veg tempura, and California roll. DJ was our waiter for the past few visits, and he's always personable, attentive, and kind. The restaurant layout and ambiance is adequate but could be better: narrow, crowded entranceway near the hostess stand which is not disability-friendly. Incoming/outgoing customers have to jostle for position with the steady stream of takeout customers, tight passageways between tables, especially for seniors with walkers/wheelchairs. The black painted plywood privacy dividers between booths also feel slapdash. Customer service could be MUCH improved, especially given the number of families with elderly parents, since the passageways are crowded, and there's a serious lack of seating for waiting customers: 2 two-person concrete benches outside and a chair by the hostess stand. On our last visit, we were 10-12 minutes early, and the rest of our party had not arrived yet. Our host informed us that even though our table was ready to go (and obviously, there was no way that they'd be serving another customer at said table in the 10 minutes prior to our 11:30 AM reservation), my 91 year old parent could not be seated at our table, otherwise they'd start our 90 minute dining clock. The host brusquely underscored that this is Gyotaku's policy: no exceptions! To speak plainly, in local parlance: NO MAKE SENSE and so NOT Hawai`i-style! This encounter really left an unpleasantly sour note on our dining experience. Given the high population of elderly customers, Gyotaku's management, please seriously consider changing your draconian seating policy and treat customers with kindness, empathy, and aloha. Excellent Japanese food and they have all kinds of specials at different times of the day! My favorite is the 2:00-4:30pm happy hour when several Sashimi platters and other dishes are discounted. They also have early bird specials for dinner somewhere in the 5:00 to 6:00pm slot, I think -- check the Yelp listing or Gyotaku website for details. Finally, after going there four weeks in a row, the staff are so kond amd sincere that I feel like I am on a first name basis with manager Brian and wait staff DJ, Penny, Sandy, and Han! Always a favorite place to eat. The peak meal times are usually busy but the service is fast that waits aren't too bad. Love their daily deals. Sashimi is always super fresh, melts in your mouth. "The Mccully location experience" This location has been a long standing location for good Japanese style grinds. We most recently went Christmas eve to enjoy a holiday dinner this year. On that night they had a special quadruple combo entree that included tempura, teri- short ribs, butterfish and ahi sashimi . Along with rice and a salad as well as tea, it was a lot tasty food. The tempura was light and crunchy, while the udon appeared to be a little mushy in a flavorful broth. * Oyako donburi. Hubby's order of chicken simmered with round onions in sweet shoyu broth and steamed with lightly beaten eggs over rice and topped with green onions and nori, which was delicious! Served with miso soup that was piping hot with wakame and tofu, the miso soup was flavorful. Also served with tossed salad that had shredded carrots, cucumber slices, a large chunk of imitation crab and served with a tart and delicious wafu dressing. At one time, Gyotaku used to offer a delicious katsudon, but is no longer on the menu and wish that they would bring it back. Our server promptly took our orders and was not very friendly. Other staff members who refilled our water glasses and cleared our dishes were much friendlier than our server, who appeared to be doing her job via memorization and rote rather than serving us on a personal basis. At the end of our meal, I saw other diners being served hot tea and had forgotten that it was complimentary and on request, but our server did not offer this to us. There are 2 levels of spacious dining areas. The first level is primarily used for senior citizens and those who have mobility issues using a walker or wheelchair, as the 2nd level is accessible by a stairway only. The 2nd level is normally used by larger groups or for special events and parties. Japanese décor and gyotaku art adorn the walls. As we arrived when the restaurant opened for lunch, there was a lot of available parking in its private lot, but they were quickly taken as it got closer to noon. Spaces are tight. Today's lunch was an enjoyable one. 4/26/25. We were seated quickly for our late lunch @1:45 pm. Our server promptly came to our table and asked us if we wanted anything to drink. We were quickly provided iced water and later hot tea. Our order was timely taken by our server. Our bill was given to us timely. We didn't feel rushed or abandoned lol. We ordered the shrimp tempura lunch (4 pieces of Shrimp, 1 piece eggplant, 2 pieces sweet potato, 2 string green beans) and Ninja Don (Spicy tuna, sushi rice, avocado and green onions). Both meals included a salad, miso soup with kelp, brown rice or sushi rice). The portions of food are ample. My shrimp tempura was served hot and fresh. The Ninja Don sauce and sushi rice were way too sweet for my taste buds. The salad is my favorite. The dressing is tasty and flavorful. The imitation crab piece is a nice touch. The miso and kelp soup is comforting and simple in taste. Overall food today: 4/5 stars. Overall Service: 5/5. Our server checked on us consistently and another server refilled our water and tea. Gosh, I haven't been here in years but the food and service is great! We got the Butterfish off the senior menu that comes with a salad and miso soup. Everything tasted great but I only wished my butterfish had less bones in it. We also ordered the Caterpillar Roll (new addition to the menu) and it was awesome! For dessert, we each ordered the green tea shave ice with Azuki Beans and Ice Cream - a winner! The menu has been updated with new items and there are specials during different weeks and they have happy hour and senior discounts. The interior looks dated but it's clean and a very comfortable and relaxed atmosphere. No loud music playing so you can have a nice conversation. Great place to take a date or your elderly parents to. The service was great. Our food came out pretty quickly probably because we came around 3:30 on a Friday so it wasn't busy yet and there was plenty of parking. Our server was friendly, polite and efficient. Lucky to have Brandon as our server again- and again, he's professional, efficient, pleasant. Same for the young man who is the host who welcomes us with a smile. The busser is very efficient and brought us waters right away and clear plates, bowls like a silent ninja. Food is always great here, perfectly prepped chicken, yummy salad, savory hot miso, and the gobo has a decidedly smoky flavor this time which we really loved. Nattochos was our appetizer filled with lots of crunchy fresh texture tortillas, firm poki mix, onions, creamy avocado, micro greens, thin nori...such a merriment of flavors in each bite! The only thing I would've liked better is if our water was filled up more often, especially since it wasn't really busy. I got the Yakitori Donburi, and first of all let me tell you that it came in a large saimin bowl...super huge portion so not what I expected ordering from the lunch special selection. Lots of tender chicken seasoned just right and just know that it also comes with salad and miso soup. Wife and I eat here (Pearl City) a lot. We enjoy the food and service but have comment with the accomodations. The seating area, thin seating cushion so can feel the spring. Last night, noticed other table customer requested to move since their cushion had hole. Anyway, my primary concern/complaint is with the serving dishes. Many times, they have chips in their soup container or main dish bowls. Past, we did not complain since it was minor. But last night, one of our dish was in a cracked tray (ordered "Early Bird")? Not a small crack, but practically cracked in half. Took photo but unable to attach to my comment section. For a restaurant like Gyotaku, management should take note of their serving bowls/dishes with chips and cracks. Also, kitchen staff should be able to easily note the damage and dispose or set it aside. Why use it and take it out to the customer? read more

Children's menu with a toy from the Treasure Box and Origami paper with instructions to keep them busy. From an extensive menu with colorful pictures showing what you will be eating. Specials of the week. Desserts with special shave ice flavors. Last week'sp shave ice flavor was White Rabbit this week it's Lilikoi. Liquor menu from wine to beer. I'm a non-alcoholic so my favorite is the ice tea & a lemon with ginger syrup. A cup of ginger syrup in a tiny cup so you can pour as much as you want in if the ginger taste is too strong. I use the entire cup as Ginger will keep me young Every time I go I'll try something new with that extensive menu plus everyone in the group can choose their favorites. We got there early just as they opened at 11am so lots of parking. Nothing has changed since I've been there last which was about several months ago. The ambiance was the same with the same pictures up on the wall. I think they should do a small face lift on this place soon. Kinda dingy feeling. What hasn't changed is the service which has always been great. Super nice servers and always on top of their game. Another thing that hasn't changed is the taste which is always consistently good.
