Owner Tomonori Yamaguchi , who previously owned the Poke on Da Run food truck, opened the Okinawan-based eatery, Kotetsu Chaya in Sept 2023. "Kotetsu" means steel or armour in Japanese, and "Chaya" is a tea house or a small, cozy eatery or snack shop. Its name implies a solid, strong, or traditional "tea house" or eatery, providing a casual neighborhood dining experience. In addition, the eatery was founded with the owners' vision of bringing authentic Okinawan flavors to HNL. As such, Kotetsu Chaya was aptly named for this eatery. Kotetsu Chaya has a diverse and traditional menu of ramen, bentos, and food items of Japanese and Okinawan cuisine of comfort food. There's a binder of menu items on replaceable pages that look worn and suggest that they be replaced. Recommended items are their karaage chicken, pork ginger, sutamina (pork w/ garlic sauce), Hayashi rice, taco rice, spice chicken over turmeric rice, and soboro (ground pork). Menu offerings include: * Bentos/plates: karaage, chicken cutlet, sutamina, kaki, pork ginger, saba, Hayashi rice, soboro, nori, chicken over rice. * Pupus: edamame, tako, kimchi, menma. * Salads: taco, herb chicken, torikaraage, green. * Fried: karaaage, chicken katsu, oysters, cream croquette, fries, gyoza. * Grilled/stir fry: pork ginger garlic, saba, yaki udon, yakisoba, gyoza, sausage. * Ramen: tonkotsu, miso, shoyu, jigoku. * Udon: kitsune, croquette, isobe. We ordered: * Karaage chicken plate. The Kubota rice, freshly milled in HI from Japan, was very sweet and fluffy and topped with green tsukemono and black sesame seeds. It also came with cherry tomatoes and lettuce, as well as mac salad. The chicken was marinated with fresh ginger and sugar prior to frying, and gave it a delicious taste; it had a light crispy batter, moist on the inside, and not oily. A subtle shoyu/vinegar sauce was served with the chicken. * Pork ginger plate. The same can be said for the rice/salad that came with the karaage chicken plate. Thin slices of pork belly, marinated in shoyu, sugar and fresh ginger, and then stir-fried and topped with a poached egg. Very nice flavor! Both of the above are recommended and menu best sellers. We found them to be very flavorful and tasty! Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Manager/cook Kiko Ohtake, when not busy cooking, will come out and talk to customers, as well as Tomo-San, the owner. As orders are made to order, you will be given a fresh temperature-hot entrée. We went there on two occasions for take-out and were surprised when staff walked around from the back employee area to the front where we were and gave us our take-out, instead of just giving it to us at the point of order. Not only did they do that, but thanked us for coming! This gesture just makes you want to return! The small restaurant seats 20. There are many color food photos on its walls and front window to help you decide what to order. But there were so many wall photos, together with daily specials, that I was somewhat confused and undecided what to order. There's also a "Ni-Ku Day" on the 29th of each month called Meat Day, as extra meat (I believe 50% more) is given for free for the karaage, pork ginger, and sutamina bentos. Hours of operation are: Mon to Sat 10:30a to 3p lunch, 4:30p to 8:30p dinner, and 4:30p to 6:30p happy hour; Sun 11a to 3p, lunch, 4:30p to 8:30p dinner, and 4:30p to 6:30p happy hour. Located near the Ala Moana Shopping Center next to La Pizza Rina, enter the driveway after you pass Kotetsu Chaya on So King St, and you will find free parking during the day that is shared with other businesses in the complex. There is also metered street parking. On our two separate visits when we arrived at their 11a lunch hour opening, there were no other customers. We hope that it got busier later during the day. A pleasant Okinawan-and-Japanese-based eatery in the heart of Honolulu with delicious offerings at reasonable prices and generous portions! And with friendly and humble staff, we hope continued success for Kotetsu Chaya! Support local!

Simple relaxing lunch and dinner spot. The food is solid. My ramen was so satisfying. Matched with a side of katsu chicken, I was in heaven. Well, that was a little exaggerated but it was definitely more than just being satisfying. BYOB friendly here. Lots of tasty appetizer plates to go with your beverages of choice. Open for lunch and dinner. Happy hour prices as well.

We ordered through DoorDash and the order was completed quickly. We all got the Karaage. Chicken Salad and everyone liked it very much. The chicken was very juicy and portion was very good. As my father gets older his appetite gets smaller but he ate a lot and noted that he also really liked the chicken. Very good, will definitely order this again! Thank you.

Casual and cozy hole in the wall with good home style Japanese Okinawan cooking. You feel like you're in a japanese or Okinawan town with the old skool menus of pics in sheet protectors, comfort food, and friendly down to earth service. I got the Saba bento, a generous piece of mackerel with a scoop of rice topped with pickles and a small salad consisting of a mix of pasta and greens. My friend got the ginger pork which came with a a fried egg on top which happened to have 2 yolks! We shared a garlic Menma (bamboo shoots) and fried ika for apps! Everything was good! Great value too! Free parking in the back. Lots of people do takeout here but they have about 7 or so tables to dine in. BYOB. We were able to sit and gab for a long time without feeling hurried. Gochisoosamadeshita!

This is a quaint "old school Oki Restaurant" with unique and delicious offerings. The staff is very friendly and helpful in explaining their menu and popular dishes. Big bonus, free parking in back of restaurant, which is always helpful and convenient for both dine in and take out. There is also street parking in front of the restaurant. Their food was yummy, highly recommend.

This a fun and cozy place! A hidden gem that is not overpriced. Kiko the server may not seem very friendly at first but it's just because she is so busy. Once it slows down a little she is a blast to talk to! Taco rice is a super good as well as their fries. Karaage is good too! Best part is it's BYOB!

    Excellent hayashi with chicken katsu
    Chas S.

Great food and a lot of fun and hard to find items on the menu like hayashi and taco rice (which everyone seemed to be ordering.) The hayashi was excellent and the "side" order of chicken katsu was enormous and very high quality. Service is super friendly and there's a ton of parking in back, enter from King Street.

Stopped in Saturday afternoon for lunch. The service was quick and friendly, the restaurant was super clean. Ordered taco rice - something I had heard about but never ordered and bro had chicken with rice. Taco rice was a great call! The veggies and cheese were fresh and cold and the taco meat and rice were hot. Delicious. Would totally order again. Bro liked his food, but noted there was something in the rice that was kind of medicinal tasting to him as he continued to eat not. Not sure if it was the turmeric or not, but while he might not order that again, he would come back and try something else. Really reasonable prices and good portions. We'll be back!

Treated to lunch by Brother-in-law Craig T . He read a review from Paul C. We got there when they opened. Pleasent and sweet server. Interior was brightly lit. Nothing fancy, A few tables, some with bench seating. We ordered two appetizers. First to come out was the Takoyaki. This was a little gummy and the tako was barely visible . Next was the Fried Oysters. Light and crisp coating. I wouldn't hesitate to order it again. My main course was the Tonkotsu Ramen with an extra soft boiled egg. Tasty broth and garnished with menma, seaweed and pork. Next time I'll ordered it wth out the extra egg . Felt like stuff turkey. Enjoy

Found this place on Yelp so had to try it. Located next to La Pizzerina right before First Hawaiian Bank. Parking is through the tunnel or street parking We got here on Sunday at 4:45 pm so there was no crowd. It's a small hole in the wall. It's airconditioned inside (PIC) With space for around 20 -25 people. i love the inside vibe. The interior is decorrated with all kind of Japanese cultural stuff (pic). Inside defintely has an old skool vibe. The staff was very welcoming with a serving humble and thankful demeanor. The menu (pic) was karaage chicken oysters...udon...shumai....curry you get the gist anyways we went with oysters (my mom said it was good) another dish was the udon with a savory pork broth (real good)...saba (tasty) shumai (yum) Hayashi (sweet curry) but everybody has different tastes but we loved everything!! Oh and they do have an inhouse bathroom (pic) but you have to ask them and enter through the back of the restaurant. A cool dining experience in a cool old skool japanese vibe with good food decent portions and fair pricing and good sincere service.

Went to Kotetsu Chaya for dinner. We ordered a variety of food. This is an interesting place...all food is served in take out containers except the cheese fries and yaki soba. They placed three pitchers of water on our table of 6 but no ice.....i was a bit disappointed as i love ice in my soda. However, the food was tasty...especially the oyster fry. Loved it, hot and crispy. It a small place for casual dining. The people running the place was very friendly and welcoming. There is parking in the back...i will be returning but for take out.

From their breading, meat quality, and ambiance, it's all fantastic. We attempted to make reservations, but they were completely booked until the following month. Since we didn't want to miss out, we decided to order their most popular tonkatsu meal to go instead. When we arrived, there were already a lot of people waiting outside. I went in to check on our order, and they let me know it would be another 10-15 minutes. Since it was a hot day, we wandered over to the crystal-themed shop next door while we waited. It had lots of interesting items to browse, although we ended up leaving empty handed. About 15 minutes later our order was ready, and we Ubered back to our hotel, which only took a few minutes. When we opened everything up, the portion felt a bit small for the price. The tonkatsu itself was tender, but for us it didn't quite live up to all the hype. I did appreciate that you can choose clam soup instead of the traditional miso soup, and there are different rice options as well, which is a nice touch. Overall, it was a good meal, but not one that completely wowed us given the price. It's possible the experience would have been different dining in, but with the long waitlist and the hot weather, takeout was the better choice for us.

Not only that, but I have to bring my significant other along to share in the deliciousness! I don't know how I'm just now talking about Marugame Udon. When I first came here, my friend and I decided to give it a try because we saw the longest line and wanted to see what all the hype was about. There was a couple in front of us who said they come here every time they visit Hawaiʻi and that it's a must-do stop on every trip. When you walk in, it's a small place. You can watch a team member washing the noodles and portioning them into bowls right in front of you. Then you choose your bowl size, small or large, and select your broth. After that, you get to choose from a variety of fried items and other à la carte options displayed on a warmer. Seating can be limited because of how busy this place gets. You line up to get your food, pay for it, grab your condiments, utensils, and a cup of water, then find a seat and enjoy. I've already been here twice, and after writing about my experience, I need to make a third visit happen very soon! There are not enough days off in a week to enjoy all of the amazing food on this island, but I'm going to do my best to experience as many places as I can. This place is totally worth the 45-minute commute from Wahiawa.

The first thing you'll notice when coming here (during a busy dinner time) is that it's really noisy, in a fun way!! The staff is super friendly! There are basically three options for seating.... booths that seat about 4 comfortably, tables on the bottom that can accommodate small or large groups, and bar seating. I've done them all and they are all comfortable. You'll find way more specials at dinner time. The food is really high quality, and super consistent too! My favorites are the yummy cucumber and the garlic cabbage salad, and the tempura and sushi/sashimi/donburi are all great too. Oh, and don't sleep on the hamachi kama. The tempura batter is light and airy and you have the option of tempura sauce, tare, or different kinds of salt. They're all really nice!! Great desserts and alcohol selection too!! Parking is a breeze next door at the old stadium mall, but warning that it may be pretty full at night. You can always find street parking along King Street though. I highly recommend this place for small and big parties alike!! But make reservations for dinnertime because walk-ins are probably not gonna happen.
