I found Kilwins randomly while exploring the outlets along State street in search of something sweet. I was set on having ice cream, but I must say, their fudge is also delicious! The staff was extremely friendly and allowed me to taste their coconut fudge as well as their chocolate walnut fudge. If I ever go back, I'll be sure to get a few slices of it! I ordered a cup of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream and wasn't thrilled with it. I found it to have a coffee taste to it and hardly any cookie dough bits which ruined it for me. Staff is invariably friendly and everything I've tried has been delicious, but hoo-boy are the prices steep. On a recent stop four pieces of toffee came out at almost $9. I justified it by reminding myself that I am happy to pay $2 for a truffle so it's about the same prices for a piece of toffee, but I still had sticker shock. Also, they're a chain with over one hundred stores around the country - if they were a small local business the high prices would seem a bit more justifiable. GREAT ice cream! The store caught our eye as we were walking down State street. We got one scoop of the marshmallow s'mores and one scoop of the turtle cheesecake- both were delicious! This place is a little gem. I have been going regularly since they first open a couple years back. It is always convenient to stop by from the walk back to campus from the square, or vice versa. And no, there is no way you will miss this place even if you have no clue where on State it is located. As you near the Square, their rich aroma of chocolates and caramel sugar will lead your way in no time. They have every type and combination of candy you can possibly be craving for. And their chocolate comes in every size (think huge easter bunny chocolates, and I mean huge). I like their truffles, especially malt, hazelnut and coffee. Usually I am not a coffee fan but with truffles it is a different story altogether. Oreo barks are another of my favorites -- rich creamy white chocolate with oreo crumbles evenly mixed in. There is no way you will miss their huge range of apples. There is an entire shelf of them the moment you walk in, and they come in so many different colors and varieties. Being the traditional me the classic caramel apples are still my fav. When you walk all the way to the end of the store you will be greeted by the ice cream bar with over 15 flavors of ice-cream. They are very generous with the samples, ensuring you get what you love. I cut a star because I find their fudge is way too sweet for me. And I could sense that the moment I tried a sample piece, which is just a bite-size piece to try before you buy. That is just me though, if you have a sweet tooth, the fudge might be for you. One thing I really like is that Kilwins does not set a minimum weight limit on your purchase. Which means you can get as much or as little of candy. This is great cos on certain days, if you just feel like having a bite of peppermint bark, or one chocolate truffle, you can always stop in and feel every bit welcome. read more

Awesome ice cream shop in the heart of downtown Madison! I came in to check out their chocolates, candied apples, and other confections in addition to their ice cream. I tried the Sea Salt Caramel ice cream, which was delicious and had chunks of chocolate in it, as well as the Seasonal Two Berry Pie which was also delicious and had good berry taste and actual pie chunks in it. They have some unique flavors, so definitely make sure you stop by if you're in the mood for dessert! Parking in this area can be tough since there isn't a lot of street parking; however, they do have some public parking garages. read more

Take a walk on state street, get within a block from this store front {enter the jingle, "follow your nose, it always knows"} and the wonderful sweet aroma of chocolate, ice cream and delicious waffle cones hits your face, and begs you to come in. I've had a few of their truffles before. Champagne, hazelnut, malt, and lemon were all delicious. My most favorite indulgence from this store so far is the turtle candies. I've had the milk chocolate, and the dark chocolate coated, as well as both the cashew and the pecan (come to think of it maybe the cashew variety are called cashew clusters). Nonetheless, all were spectacular. My favorite though is the milk chocolate. Biting into one of their turtle cluster candies (whether it be milk or dark chocolate) is such a delight. The chocolate coating is wonderfully thick, and snaps when bit into, just as it should. The insides are plump with wonderful caramel hugging tender nuts. A beautiful balance of both. I really do intend to try some of their other offerings, like the fudge. As it is now, I'm perfectly happy stopping in just for a turtle that they do so well. This store is conveniently close to at least 2 different coffee shops! Match made in heaven! read more

My first visit here was a hit. The first impression was that the two guys making the caramel apples made a production out of it. They know that the windows and counter are set up for people to view them as art. There is a wide selection of chocolate and ice cream to pick from. There is some seating, but we were taking our dessert to go. My friend and I both got one of the giant peanut butter cups. Instead of peanut butter inside, it is peanut butter fudge, and a lot of it. It was a huge chunk of peanut butter fudge surrounded by a thin layer of chocolate, a decadent dessert. It was wonderful. I would absolutely come here again. read more

This was my first stop in Madison when I went to the Wiscon convention in May. I was drawn into the store because of the caramel apples in the window. I live in New Orleans, and we don't have them in our candy stores, but I grew up in Michigan, and the caramel apple I bought brought me back to my childhood. I thought the caramel apple was a little pricey, but I have no idea how much they normally cost, and in the end it was worth it. I sat at a table outside and enjoyed the heck out of that thing. Very nice shop, modern, nicely displayed products. we purchased their fudge with the buy 2 slices and get one free...turtle, salted caramel and chocolate peanut butter. the salted caramel is DIVINE and the chocolate peanut butter melts in my mouth...not too sure about the turtle, wish there was more nuts or a ribbon of caramel inside of it. As a native Michigander who grew up eating Kilwins fudge, I was super excited to see that Kilwins had expanded (to several states, but especially) to Madison. It's just such a great place. Between coffee drinks, ice cream, truffles, caramel apples, and of course the varieties of fudge, this place is a sugar lover's dream. My husband had never been to a Kilwins, so we overindulged a bit and tried a few different kinds of fudge, a rice krispie treat, and the hot chocolate -- all were fresh and delicious. Personal recommendation? Try the salted caramel fudge. So. Good. The staff was very friendly and helpful. This past summer, I stopped in with a friend for a treat. It was very hot this day. The staff asked us if we wanted to sample anything so we tried a few of the ice cream flavors and both were completely sold on the Apple pie ice cream. We got cones and tipped them upside down in a cup and ate with spoons because there's no way we could've kept up with the sun melting our prized treat. They were cooling and absolutely delicious. The fudge, huge caramel apples and other sweets being sold looked picture perfect yet the smell of so much sugar sent my head whittling like when you're 6 and try to eat all your Halloween candy in one sitting. I'd love to try one of the apples if they could cut it in pieces for me. Maybe I'll ask sometime. Staff is always polite and full of information. Great spot for treats.... Just walk by and you'll be like that cartoon who picks up the scent of something good and is following his nose almost floating to the source. read more

I love this place. I'm not the biggest fan of fudge, and to be honest, I think some of their fudges are a little too sweet (like the turtle). However, I think their other products are DELICIOUS. Their ice cream is super creamy and not too sweet. The cookie dough ice cream is my fave because there are a ton of big chunks of buttery cookie dough. The cookies n cream is also rich in oreos, and the raspberry sorbet is very refreshing. I love their caramel apples, and their lemonade is delicious. Went into this adorable shop for the first time today, and walked away very impressed. Smells amazing. The caramel apples are really the stars of the shop, they are seriously gorgeous. The variety of treats here is astounding, and they also serve hot beverages. A charming young lady helped my friend and I, and offered us samples of ice cream and fudge. She later revealed herself to be the owner, and you can tell she really enjoys being in her shop, and she wants to get to know her customers! The ice cream is good, but not great. Regardless, what people really come here for is the fudge, ect. Umm..please stop reading my review and go to Kilwins for some salted caramel ice cream. It is really the best ice cream I've ever had. EVER. Perfectly salted swirls of caramel, little chocolate cups and creamy vanilla ice cream. I also just overloaded on fudge samples and admired their gorgeous chocolates but had to stick with one dessert considering I was already stuffed from dinner. Fantastic ice cream and fudge. The place was packed on a Wednesday night when we went, lots of families with children. The staff kept their cool handing out sample after sample until they'd all been served. Their patience was truly remarkable and so was the ice cream. I love this place! Good thing I do not live closer or I would be there more. I really have only tried two things since I like them so much, but need to branch out and try more. I always get fudge - Salted Caramel to be exact. They put it in a little box with a small plastic knife so you it is convenient for you to eat. It is really great fudge. The other item I get are some pre-packaged, dark chocolate covered salted caramels. I wish they sold these individually, since there are six in a box and then I have to eat them all!
