This is my second time coming to co Kim to get my clothes altered. This time was my dress for a wedding and she did a great job on it. It was $50 to get the waist taken in and the length hemmed. It cost a little more because there was two layers of the dress so it's more complex to do than a normal 1 layer dress. Of course she is so sweet and nice when I felt that the waist could be a little tighter when I went to try it on before picking it up. Full disclaimer: this was my first time getting clothing altered. I have no experience with tailors and don't have a benchmark for comparing Kim. My maid of honor dress was too long and too big, not befitting or flattering of someone with the 'maid of honor' title. (It was my first time being a MOH! I wanted to look nice for my good friend's wedding!) Yelp led me to Kim at Kim Dung Tailor, located on El Cajon Boulevard. I had called to see if an appointment was needed, and to verify hours, and Kim said to just come in during her business hours. There's green curb parking right in front of her store, but there's also parking in the residential area, on Winona, just around the corner to Kim's shop, or on Winona across El Cajon. I did not have issues finding parking when I dropped off and picked up my dress. When you first get to Kim's shop, you may think it's closed, but the sign will say "open," and the door will be locked. That's because she's the only one who works in the shop all day! Once you meet her, you'll understand -- she's a petite, sweet little old lady (totally makes me think of my grandmother). Kim asked if I wanted to have the dress taken in a bit, to which I vehemently wanted (despite my perpetual fluffy winter coat, I wanted to give *some* semblance of a figure!). She measured, and asked if I was planning to wear heels. I made the mistake of not wearing heels to the fitting, because it didn't give an accurate representation of how long the dress was actually going to be on me when I wore it. Thankfully, Kim had some pairs of high heeled sandals ready. We figured out that I actually did *not* need to shorten my dress, even if I wore my itty bitty 2.5" heels. The dress, after being taken in, and with a pair of heels, would fit perfectly and *not* drag on the floor. Huzzah! The zipper that came with the dress was also very weak/cheap, so I asked Kim to replace it for something more durable and effective. Kim did not try to upsell me or alter unnecessarily for my dress. My dress had multiple layers and pockets, so she explained that hemming/shortening the dress would be expensive, basically needing to charge per fabric layer that needed shortening. I dropped my dress off on a Wednesday, and the dress was altered and ready the next Saturday, so, a 10 day turnaround. Really fast! And the dress fit beautifully. In total, it was $70 to change out the zipper and take my dress in. I tried to tip Kim, but she did not accept it, and stated that she has never accepted tips. If you are looking to get something hemmed or altered, please consider supporting Kim's business! This was my first time coming to Kim to get a bridesmaid dress hemmed, and I'm very glad I chose her. I called around for a few estimates to hem a two-layered bridesmaid dress. Kim's price was the most reasonable and she was able to complete it in a week. I didn't need an appointment, and she said I could come to her shop any time for initial measurements. She also reminded me to bring the heels I planned to wear to the initial fitting so she could accurately measure the dress to the correct length. A few things to note! She is cash only and she will remind you of this when writing out the slip. Her shop is located in City Heights, and it's street parking only. I didn't have any issues finding a spot near her shop. Since she works alone, the front gate door is always locked, but she will come and open the door once she sees you. The hours on Yelp are a little off, as she told me she usually closes by 5:30pm and she is closed Sundays. Overall, I had a really great experience with Kim. She was very warm, welcoming, and professional. She takes pride in her work, and is thankful for the word-of-mouth recommendations through Yelp. I brought my wedding dress here. The lace details were complex and she was able to bring up the length of my dress without much trouble and at a much more reasonable price compared to other tailors. During my visits, I met other extremely satisfied customers who always bring items for tailoring to Ms. Kim. Ms. Kim is old school, doesn't know what Yelp is, and has no idea how people keep learning about her business when she doesn't do marketing. I found out about Mrs. Dung's tailoring services through Yelp bc I had some clothes in need of some tailoring and noticed she had many positive reviews. She is a little out of the way for me, but I don't mind driving if the services are well done. Mrs. Dung is a very sweet lady and has been honing in her craft for a long time. Prices are so-so I would say on the higher end? But I'm not too sure what prices are when it comes to tailoring. I did come in recently and Mrs. Dung fixed a hole in my dress and hemmed it. I had the elastic waste of a pair of slacks taken in and an inner button sewn inside of a bathrobe to keep the front from gaping open. For the robe, she actually suggested something different than I originally requested and it turned out great. She did an excellent job at a very reasonable price. I HAD THE BEST EXPERIENCE! I was looking for an alterations place in San Diego and am very thankful that one of my friends recommended Kim Dung Tailor to me. My wife and I brought a dress here a while back to have the length of it altered. We were greeted really nicely when we first came in. I thought wow, the great reviews do reflect what it says. She said it would cost $60 to have it shortened. I just kindly told her that I bought the dress for only $40, so $60 is kind of too expensive just for a minor alteration. Her facial expression changed from smiling to frowning. She immediately changed her tone of voice from pleasant to unpleasant. She then said with an attitude in Vietnamese, "thay mac thi thoi, di di." In English, it means if it's too expensive for you then go away. She was saying it while waving her hand at us and shooing us out the door. I mean, what in the world kind of customer service is this? Do you not have any manners or customer service skills at all? It was not like I was rude to her or anything. If she was professional, then she would have at least explain why it would cost $60 for such an alteration. After all, customers like me wouldn't understand how difficult each alteration is, so a simple explanation would have suffice. And perhaps not talking to customers with such a bad attitude. But no, she didn't do any of this, and just immediately shooing us away to the door. I don't know how she received all the 5 stars reviews from the customers. Hey, maybe if you accept whatever price she says then she will be nice to you, if not then be ready to be treated poorly. I'm pretty sure some of them 5 stars are coming from her friends and family too. I will never go back here and will never recommend this place to anyone. read more

She told me to give her about 10 days turn around because she is very busy and working late hours. I received a call from her about 7 days in and picked up my dress earlier. The cost for a long gown, simple bottom trim, cost $28! She charges very reasonable and does a very good job; my request is very easy so I'd say she made easy money off of me. Found Ms. Kim via Yelp and so thankful I did. I rarely get alterations because 1. I'm lazy and 2. They're expensive. However as bridesmaid dresses, bell bottoms that were way too long, and dragging maxi dresses started to pile up, I knew I had to take action. I called to try and make an appointment but she said it wasn't necessary and just to walk in. I walked in on a rainy Saturday morning and she greeted me with the warmest, sincerest welcome - asked me what I did, where I went to school, told me I was a good girl (lol). There is a slight language barrier for non-Vietnamese speakers, however Ms. Kim is an excellent communicator. She spoke about her grandson in college and how she sometimes works until 4am and how she takes a lot of pride in her work. Returning customers are her top priority. She took 20 minutes to measure me in multiple items and even took the time to explain how cotton shrinks when washed and to take that into account when hemming a pair of yoga pants I brought. She even cared to hem the pants every so slightly shorter in the front and longer in the back for a more flattering cut. I was shocked at how affordable the price was and how quick her turnaround time was (1 week exactly for 5 items). I picked them up and couldn't be more pleased with the results. I drive an hour round trip to get to Mrs. Kim Dung. I hadn't seen her in a long while so I wasn't sure how she was doing. I pulled up to the front of her shop and parked right in front. I could see her shop lights turned on through the metal security bars. There she sat, this petite, pretty and kindly 76 years old Vietnamese lady intently focused on altering a garment for someone special. My heart was happy to see this sweet lady again! When everything in this world is changing fast, this lady continues to do what she knows and loves. She works many hours and it is so laborious and detailed. She is often alone and yet she services so many people in our community. Her kids will not follow in her footsteps, "it is hard work with too little money" as she likes to emphasize. I learn from her that there is grace, honor, and abundance in working hard in something that you know and love. Although she doesn't make a lot of easy money, she has abundance because there is never a lack of customers coming to see her. What I love about her: She spends quality time with me to get the garments to fit just right. She is honest about what she can do and will tell you if she feels like she will not be able to make you happy. She would rather you keep your money if she doesn't believe she can make it happen. She closes at 5pm on Saturdays. The phone rings and her family is checking in on her. She needs to head home after she closes the shop at 5pm to start dinner for family. As I get back into my car, it is 5pm, I had arrived at 4pm, she spent a whole hour with me sizing, detailing and pinning the garments to fit me just right. I see a hispanic man walking up, he's wearing a flannel shirt, he's carrying two plastic grocery bags full of garments. He stands at the locked glass door waiting for her to open up. It's closing time and her family is waiting, dinner is waiting, but she takes him in and locks the door for safety while she works alone with another client. This lady is rare.
