Irina is great! I needed to get an alteration for a jersey done as a surprise gift for someone. It would've been easier for Irina if I had someone wear the jersey so she can best decide how to alter it but since it was a surprise gift, I was only able to provide another jersey for reference. But.. it was totally different than the jersey I wanted to get altered. So that was my bad. Despite all of this, Irina was still able to alter the jersey perfectly and within a week. The jersey fit well despite not having a human model for reference! For the amount of things that had to be done to alter the jersey, I thought the price was fair. I've been a customer for over 10 years when Irina worked in a small dry cleaning establishment on Clairemont Mesa Blvd. She's honest and well priced. I've gone running in when I was late for date and my hem came down or I needed a button sewn on right away and she immediately took care of it. She understands the way fabrics lay on your body and her goal is to make your clothes fit as if they were custom-made for you. As we all know clothes off the rack don't always fit our individual bodies. I am different sizes on the top and bottom. It's difficult to buy dresses and other formfitting outfits. Irina fixes everything so I always look neat and professional. When I was losing weight, she took in my jeans and my tops so I didn't have to buy new interim clothes. I appreciate that Irina advises me not to have certain clothes altered if she feels the alterations are not worthwhile. There was one time when I bought a special outfit at a spectacular sale but the only size the store had was a size larger than I needed. I called her from the retail store and she said she could make it fit. The alterations were worth it and I looked like a million bucks!! Irina is located in Hillcrest. Irina is the best! I went to her to get a vintage skirt taken in. It was a complicated job because the skirt had a lining, and I wanted it to go from sitting on my hips to being high waisted, which means that special adjustments needed to be made. She did a perfect job! She took special care with all the details and even had the pleats in the bottom of the skirt pressed and perfect when I came to pick it up. There have been a few times when I wanted to alter something in a certain manner, and she would tell me "It's up to you, but I don't think that's a good idea because it will be more money and it won't look as good if you do this." My family has gone to him for everything we have ever needed for the seven years we have been here in San Diego and he has sewn things from my pants and shirts to my wife's dresses both formal and casual! The first time I came in to get an alteration it was for a suit. The store I bought it from had given me the wrong size. When I got to Alexs Alteration they pointed that out to me and told me to go exchange my suit. When I went back to the store they confirmed I had the wrong size after I tried it on again. Yes this was my first suit. I went back with the right size and got the alterations done. When I got my suit back I was extremely happy with how it fit. The best way I can describe it is that at Alexs Alterations makes your clothes fit how you want it to fit. Or better yet how it looks in the magazines. I am 5' 1" and have used different tailors over the years. I have to say I am disappointed with my experience with Irina at Alex's Alterations. We had a miscommunication- (which I wasn't even that upset about). She said she could have 2 out of my 5 garments ready by Sat...the others would be ready by Wed. We misunderstood in that I thought she was going to call me if they were going to be ready on Sat...and she thought I was just going to come and pick them up. So no biggie...since I didn't get a call, I didn't think they were ready. Fast forward to Wed when I go to pick up everything. She is not there and the cleaner and I only find the 2 items together that were ready on Sat but not the other items. So I go run an errand and come back when she will return. I come back an hour later and she is mad at me because I didn't pick up the two items on Sat! I explained that we must have had a miscommunication...and that it was really not a big deal. She was mad at me though...but really I should have been more mad because come to find out not all of my clothes were ready by the promise date of Wed. She kind of apologized for this but not really. I have to say that I don't think I'm going to return to Alex's Alterations. I don't appreciate how I was spoken to and it's inconvenient to keep making trips to pick up clothes because they are all not ready! Everyone is too busy for that...I also found there to be differences on prices for work done on similar items. For example, one cotton shirt just shortened in the front was $8 one day and on the day she was mad another cotton shirt only hemmed in the front was $12! There are many other tailor's in San Diego....I will keep looking for another one in my new neighborhood. I'm glad other people had better experiences but I didn't....I'm disappointed. read more

First of all this Yelp review is long over due- by almost 7+ years! That's how long I have been taking my wardrobe to Alex's Alterations. Irina (the other half of Alex's Alterations) is simply amazing! I've been going to tailors my entire life due to my short, petite frame with off the rack clothes never fitting quite right. She is far and above the most talented tailor I have ever known! And her husband Arsen is incredible too, they just work at different locations. Irina can take something that you never thought repairable and voila -make it even better than you imagined. On more than one occasion she has saved me when I was in a bind and made something come to fruition that others said was impossible, especially with formal attire, bridesmaids dresses, etc. She is a very thoughtful, genuine and kind person and has wonderful suggestions-almost always better than you can imagine so trust her-she's the expert! Her work is impeccable and timely and I trust her implicitly with all of my clothing. Literally, people stop me off of the street from time to time and comment on my clothes, wondering if they are custom made given the way they expertly fit my body.
