This gem is a little hole in the wall steps away from Lougheed skytrain station. I come here for their cheap kimbap - around $4 for a huge roll of 12 pieces. At these prices, it can't be beat. Tip: I recommend the tuna one! It sounds odd, but it's really delicious. I was a bit skeptical about it when I ordered but it was actually very good! They add sesame oil into the tuna I believe and its a nice touch. The Regular Kim Bab was a bit bland compared to the other two. If you eat in, they also give you complimentary beef bone broth which pairs nicely with the kimbab! If you're ever in the area and in the mood for kimbab, check this place out! They also have a lot of other classic Korean dishes here as well - just not KBBQ I believe. Service: 4/5 - servers were busy constantly but still attentive, quick and pleasant Ambiance: 3/5 - not really the kind of place you go for ambiance, but it was a relatively clean establishment Food: 3.5/5 - solid food, even better prices! This place gets busy quite fast, so be prepared to wait if you go during peak eating hours! As others have mentioned the kimbab is excellent, you cannot go wrong with any of the rolls, but our favourite is the tuna. Also the naeng myeon, which is cold noodles in soup, is really refreshing especially in the summer! Prices are more than fair. The beef kimbap and albap are must haves. Very delicious, very flavourful, without being overly salty or oily. The kimbap is brushed with sesame oil on the outside, which adds a very nice fragrance when you are consuming it like a pig (because it's so good, it's hard to stop...). The albap is not your typical stone bowl, as it comes with masago, cheese, tuna, etc. instead of the usual meat and veggies. They give you two tuna sauces on the side so you can add however much you want. Above all else though, the complimentary soup!!!!!!! I swear I drink half of the pitcher whenever I eat here. The hint of garlic just pairs so well with whatever you ordered, and it's nice to half something other than water to wash down your food. Unfortunately, while I used to go wife frequently, I found on my recent visit (after not going for a while) that the prices have been increased quite a bit. While the taste and quality are still the same, I enjoyed the food much more when it was more affordable. Now the prices are pretty much on par with a standard Korean restaurant, so unfortunately I won't be able to come back as often. read more

Recently moved back to the area and am on the hunt for regular bibimbap spot - unfortunately, the spicy pork rice stone bowl at Kimbap Cheonguk did not impress. Let's break down the experience. Pre-food: Although it seemed busy, we were seated right away. The server brought us broth in a kettle, but only brought one glass (there were two of us) and while the broth was tasty, it was no longer warm. I thought it was pretty neat how the cutlery was in the drawer on the side of the table, though! Food: Pork Rice Stone Bowl The first thing I noticed was the rice - when the dish arrived, the rice at the bottom was already crunchy and greasy, stuck to the bottom of the bowl. Overall, the dish was quite bland and although the sauce added spice, it didn't add flavour. The vegetables also didn't add much, and I was disappointed that they don't serve the dish with an egg. Payment: Kimbap Cheonguk only takes cash or debit (no credit cards). Overall, might come back to try the Kimbab since I've heard good things, but would not recommend the rice stone bowl. Lacked flavor, rice was mushy and even the bottom was crunchy there was too much oil that collected on the bottom. 2/5 Jamg teo gook bab soup The rice on the bottom was mush, we asked for the rice in the side but they forgot. YES YES YES!!! Love this place. So much!!! Kimbap Cheonguk is a total hidden gem. Korean restaurants are a dime in a dozen in Coquitlam, but KC is definitely one of the standouts!! Everything on the menu is super delish and homey tasting. And on top of that, everything is under $10!!! Their famous for their kimbap, which is seriously some of the best we've ever had. The first time I had Kimbap was surprisingly (for some) in Calcutta, India. I was 15 years old and on a particularly balmy summer day at lunch break, a friend and I decided to return to our classroom unusually early before the bell. One quiet South Korean girl would often eat her lunch in the classroom alone and so we naturally fell into conversation with her. She politely offered us a bite of her lunch (as is the custom in India - and I assume S. Korea). She had brought what I then thought was a kind of homemade Korean sushi but now know as Kimbap. It was a mouthful of bliss and I'll never forget the taste - the burst of fresh cucumber, the flavour of the rice and the seaweed. I wish I could do it justice by describing it but I cannot. Does the Kimbap at Kimbap Cheonguk live upto this first impression? It does not. It is nowhere nearly as delicious as I remember my first Kimbap to have been but it was still very good. I prefer the original Kimbap to the bulgogi. We got both. My bf got the naeng-myeon (I'm not sure which one) and we both absolutely loved it. However, it was rather too spicy for its size (we are mainly used to Indian spices which are very different and less overwhelming) and we'd have to eat it in installments. I don't mind because this was so good. The kimchi was delicious but I've rarely ever had bad kimchi. I also love the utensils we were served in - the thick metal glasses, a strange metal bowl/pan/pot (not sure what to call it) etc gave everything a very vintage Asian feel and I especially loved the sliding cart which they used to serve the food. I really felt like I was in Asia and the service was still attentive enough. This place is great and I'll definitely go back. read more

Came here on a Thursday at 3pm and they weren't too busy at all. We got the rabokki, a pork rice bowl and the beef kimbap. The kimbap dipped in the tteokbokki sauce was soo good. We also really enjoyed the complimentary soup that came with the food. The rabokki sauce is more sweet than spicy, personally I like it more savoury/spicy but it was still good. I would definitely go back and try their cold noodles in the summer and order the kimbap and tteokbokki again. The rice bowl was a good serving and had quite a bit of meat on top. We ordered the #15 Jang Teo Gook Bab ($10) and #20 Stone Pot Rice Pork ($10.50). The servers and cashier appeared to be very young and somewhat inexperienced with dealing with patrons as dishes are just slammed on our table and off they go. I love this place. My only qualm is that it closes at 8pm! The items you cannot go wrong with: kimbabs (aka "Korean sushi") make sure you get the Tuna and the Bulgogi! A friend swore that this place had the best kimbap. I ordered the bulgogi kimbap. It was my first time trying kimbap, and it was super tasty! And the serving size/price was unbeatable! My friend ordered a rice dish (can't remember the name), which had some sort of fish, fish eggs, and veggies, served in a stonepot. She enjoyed her meal and had enough leftover to take home. Before our dishes arrived some garlicky soup was delivered to our table in a teapot. We didn't really know what it was, but it was tasty and we drank it all. Carpe diem! The menu is in Korean, but has lots of pictures so it wasn't hard to order. The waitress serving us was friendly but didn't speak too much English - but enough to communicate orders. During our trip to Vancouver, my husband and I visited kimbap cheonguk twice. The first time we went at 10:00 and go the soup and kimbap for breakfast and then we went back for lunch and got soup again plus rabokki and kimbap. It's so affordable and yummy. And I was pleasantly surprised that the rabokki at this location tasted just like the rabokki at kimbap cheonguk in Seoul. If you like kimbap its not a bad place. It didnt find it exceptional but it was solid. I tried the beef, kimchee and someone else I dint really rememeber (that's how much it stood out). Came on a friday mid afternoon, already 1/2 place was full but its a small restaurant that probably has 10 tables. Love how they gave a pot of soup when i got there. Ordered cold noodles, instant noodles with rice cake and beef sushi. I wasn't a fan of the cold noodles but my hubby says it was good.
