Recommended by a korean friend a while back so this cozy small restaurant has been on my list for a while. It is a japanese-korean restaurant but we went to try the korean dishes. To be honest, we were a bit disappointed at what we selected. They are fairly average compared to the numerous korean restaurants across lower mainland. We ordered the beef bulgogi, bossam and kimchi soup. The beef bulgogi was quite oily and it looked more like a onion beef strips than bulgogi. the flavor was just missing The kimchi soup was average. Lots of tofu but missing kimchi. Bossam was decent though. But i think we would appreciate not serving bossam with romain lettuce which made it so hard to wrap the meat. All the regular korean banchan needed to be charged. Our server was good. she was very busy though as she was the only one working that night. Our bill also eas accurate though. we were charged the additional charge of rice with bossam which we did not order and did not arrive. Because my friend and i split the bill, we were charged full excharge price of rice on each of the bill. because the incorrect charge was minimal, we did choose to just pay and did not voice it so we just left. read more

Pretty good value for Korean food and Korean-style Japanese! Came here for an early dinner around 5:30 pm on a Sunday. The restaurant was empty at that time, but they had multiple take out orders throughout our meal. I really wanted the Deluxe Chirashi don but it was crossed out on their menu. Instead, we got the regular Chirashi don for $16.25. For this price, I think it was pretty decent, with 2 salmon, 2 tuna, 2 hokkigai, 3 octopus, some squid, and tamago pieces. We also got the Korean fried chicken for $18. There were about 12-13 pieces of boneless crispy chicken, and we chose the sweet soy flavour. These were really tasty and stayed crispy throughout the meal. We also got the BC roll, which took a really long time to come out as we added that to our order later. It had 5 pieces, and it was okay. I also ordered the $2.50 fruit tea, made with jasmine tea, and chose the passionfruit flavour. This was a really good price and super refreshing. The one complaint I have is there was a super strong oil smell present. It was so strong, the smell remained on my clothes after 1 wash (although not as strong). I am not sure if it is because of their open kitchen style or a broken range hood or something. There is some free street parking in the nearby neighbourhood. Japanese x Korean restaurant, however focus seems to be bit more on Japanese side since not a lot of Korean dishes on the menu. I would recommend their Lunch bento box deal, available daily from 11:30 to 3:30pm. All lunch bentos come with salad, miso soup, pickles, and chicken karage. I chose the Nigiri option, which comes with 5 pieces of nigiri sushi as well as a small bowl of your choice of bulgogi, spicy pork or chicken. Delicious and filling lunch set with a variety of dishes. Since uni is also in season, we got a couple of uni nigiris to try as well. If you like uni, I definitely recommend getting this. The current market price is $7.50 each. As appetizer, we got the tako wasabi. Nothing too special about this one, just as expected like with any tako wasabi orders. Overall, I enjoyed the food here and would come back. However, service was a bit slow as they seem be a bit understaffed during this time (only 1 server for the entire lunch time though not very busy), as with most places. Ordered some take out from Joon's Kitchen since I had my eye on their lunch specials for awhile now! We ordered one of their lunch bentos which had nigiri, spicy pork, mushroom salad and gyoza. I really liked the nigiri pieces as we had requested not to have surf clam so we received two of their salmon aburi! The rice to fish ratios was great and each piece was fresh and tasty. Unfortunately, the gyoza were limp because it was take out but the taste was okay! The spicy pork portion was not very large but it was flavourful. We also got their special roll with tuna tataki on top and a california base. I found that the rice was a little bit over seasoned and there was a tad too much sauce. We ordered the sashimi bento, tofu soup, tuna maki, and California roll. Everything was delicious! The sashimi was good portion size and fresh. The maki rolls had excellent rice to fish ratio, and the sushi rice was flavoured well. The tofu soup was a bit expensive for what it is, so I don't think I'd order it again. The bento box had a beef donburi. It was tasty and not seasoned too sweet. The pumpkin side dish was delicious. Prices are cheap compared to downtown sushi places. A little gem for Korean food on the westside. I've driving by Joon's Kitchen on Oak Street many time and final made a stop for dinner with a friend. We ordered 3 dishes to share and we were full. The Seafood Pancake was my favourite. The chef has a keen eye and delicate touch for ensuing a light batter and good portion of seafood. Other Korean restaurants put the batter as priority while Joon's does not. Equally handled with care, the Chicken Karaage was crispy and light. We finished with the Classic Bibimbab which was warm and so filling. The hot pot made the bottom of the rice crispy so good amount of crunch when mixing the rice and vegetables. Service was fried and attentive. Our tea and water cups were always filled. The restaurant is very clean and minimalist. Free parking on the side street. I noticed there were lots of take outs and the limited dine-in section was busy so glad folks are supporting this small local business. Unquestionably coming back to try other dishes and don't have to trek to Coquitlam for awesome Korean food. read more

I was able to discover this hidden gem on Oak Street just through scrolling through street view on Google Maps. I saw that there were also quite decent reviews on Yelp, so I decided to give it a try. Joon's Kitchen is a Korean fusion restaurant serving both traditional Korean dishes and Japanese-inspired Korean dishes. We tried quite a few dishes, listed below: One dish that was highly rated was the Sea Urchin Bibimbab. Sold at M.P., it was $25 when we went. I wouldn't say the portions were super big, but it was definitely worth it for the price. The uni was subtle and worked well with the strong soy sauce flavour of the dish. Even for my friend who was a beginner to uni, he quite enjoyed this dish. It was also paired with a bit of greens which gave it a slightly minty taste. We ordered the Seafood Pancake ($21). It was one of the better pajeon's I've had in Vancouver! The batter was perfect and not too doughy. Pretty big size, but I would have liked more pieces of seafood inside. Another item ordered was the Sockeye Salmon Pressed Aburi ($12.50). This was pretty decent but I wouldn't say it was anything special. The rice falls apart easily and the spicy mayo was spicier than other sushi places I've tried. I probably would not get this one again but would try their other aburi items. Lastly, we ordered a bossam (Large) for $32. The pork was perfect! It had the right amount of fat to meet ratio and was seasoned well. It was tasty eating it without any accompaniment. When paired with the soybean paste and non-spicy, it was even more delicious. It also came with white kimchi and 2 spicy sides to make ssam. Overall, this was a great meal! Came here by a recommendation from a friend. Parking on the street is ok to find on an early Friday evening Waiters are super friendly and very nice service. My friend and I were sharing so the waitress have us extra utensils to divi up the food. Ordered sashimi. Very fresh and large, thick pieces. Uni came on the house. This is my go-to place for my Japanese-Korean craving for 2020. I have been coming to Joon for over a dozen times and therefore this review is long overdue. Situated in a quiet part of Oak St this quaint bistro serves up some amazing sushi. It is the handling of fish that brings me back time after time. The raw ones are tasty and fresh by Vancouver's standards. They also use Aburi cleverly as needed. The lunch specials come with Korean fried chicken and your choice of Korean sauced Beef/Spicy Pork/Chicken. If you can handle the heat, spicy pork is a must. For dinner I have had the JapChae and the assorted sushi too. Ambience is cozy. Place can only fit three tables and a long table in times of Covid. There is adequate spacing. We had some appies, some sushi, some bibimbap, and it was all really great, inclusive of some very attentive service, but I come today to talk about the taiyaki. I found my holy grail taiyaki in Toronto of all places, in this tiny booth in a Korean supermarket, but since moving to Vancouver I haven't been able to find anything to replace that itch. Today, of all days, was this year's Sakura Fest at Van Dusen, which is probably the biggest Japanese festival in the city, and I was so looking forward to finding taiyaki there today, but was really disheartened when not one vendor had any on their menus. I came into Joon's on a whim for dinner. I saw they had taiyaki and obviously ordered some for dessert following a really wonderful and delicious meal. MY LADIES AND MY DUDES. I've found my new holy grail. The outside was perfectly and consistently crispy. The waffle layer was a bit thin but for the purpose of making room for as much red bean filling as was humanly possible, which was sweet and texturally *chefs kiss*. We've been wanting to check out Joon's Kitchen for awhile. They coin themselves as offering Korean cuisine and a raw bar (oysters and sushi). You'll find them close to Max's Bakery & Delicatessen. We've been twice; both visits on a Saturday afternoon for lunch. Service was solid the first time, mediocre the second time. The menu consists of salad, appetizer, hot food, meat, bibimbap and sushi. Only Korean place I've seen that offers a beef sashimi bibimbap. They also offer 5 lunch box options (11:30am to 3:30pm). Trip #1 - 2x Sashimi box ($18.50) - 5 pieces of sashimi. All their lunch boxes come with a mushroom salad, chicken karaage, pickled vegetables, rice and miso soup. For our meat, we opted for the bulgogi. Bulgogi wasn't too sweet but could have used some sauce. Miso soup was standard fare. The chicken karaage was excellent; moist, tender and lightly deep fried. The sashimi (three tuna and two wild salmon) was as expected. - Nigiri box ($18.50) - chef's choice of 5 pieces of nigiri. For this box, we went with the spicy pork. Pork wasn't particularly spicy but it was well marinated and flavourful. The nigiri (tai, wild salmon, ebi, hokkigai and salmon belly aburi) were all quite good. Salmon belly aburi was the best piece. The mixed pickled vegetables (onion, radish and chili peppers) were crunchy and refreshing. Mushroom salad was basic. - Spicy pork bibimbap ($15.00) - didn't get to try but was told it was flavourful. Trip #2 - Bossam box ($18.00) - the pork belly was a touch on the dry side but the spicy sauce was tasty. All the other dishes were the same but the karaage was excellent again. - Beef sashimi bibimbap ($20.00) - we asked for the spicy sauce but they never brought it out with our bowl. The raw beef was nicely marinated and tender but wouldn't order it again. A bit too one dimensional flavour wise. Decent eats at JK. 3.5 stars. read more

The food was okay and the biggest disappointment was that after an hour in, they insisted that we leave because someone made a reservation even tho there were other empty tables they could've given us upon arrival and there were plenty of seats around the restaurant when they asked us to leave. Been awhile since my last visit here and thought the food was just okay. However, the service was really good! I think I like their sushi more than the Korean food. The nigiri were quite large, and prices were very reasonable. The other dishes we had were the classic bibimbap with beef and LA galbi. I found the bibimbap to lack flavour even with the spicy sauce. As well, the bowl wasn't hot enough to get a nice crisp on the rice. The LA galbi was an okay portion, but was nothing special. The meat wasn't super tender. We were excited to hear about this addition to our good and had wanted to go as they are Korean owned and operated and offer both Korean and Japanese cuisine. We booked a table ahead of time and the waitress who took our res struggled a bit but after explaining three times that I was booking a table and not ordering takeout, she finally got my date and time right. But, in​ the end, I didn't need to do that because when we got there, we were the only customers! This was 7:30pm on a Tuesday night. We came mainly for Korean food but did get curious about the Japanese items to after seeing the photos. So we ordered some typical Korean items like soon dubu jiggae soup and japchae, bibimbap, that sort of family restaurant food. Then, ​of course, we have to have some fried chicken, so we went for the sweet and spicy version. Finally, we added a couple of sushi rolls. I liked the chicken most because it was all boneless AND pretty well batterless - yes, so every bite is breast meat. The bite without the batter makes it smaller but I prefer this than to fill my stomach with batter. The sushi rolls turned out nice as the ingredients were all fresh enough. The japchae and bibimbap were mainly standard fare. We found the japchae on the salty side, and the bibimbap a bit bland. It came with a soy​-based sauce to pour over, but we finally asked for gojujang, but they do not have that. While it wasn't overall a​ disappointing experience​​, I think there was a bit of a let down compared to our expectations. We knew it was marketed as a slightly higher end place with perceivably better ingrediencts, leading to its higher price. In the end, we didn't really sense that there was much difference, and if anything, the culnirary experience itself was not as enjoyable as we anticipated. There's room for improvement and I think they can do it once they figure the exact target market they're after. read more

Abusolutely our favourite restaurant in the city! Joon's kitchen provides not only the good taste but also great presentation and service. I am Japanese and I can tell those Korean chefs definitely appreciate their home Korean food AND Japanese food! Their sashimi is so fresh, never smells old. Our favourite is the Yellow tails! Sooooooo fresh and good quality! We just enjoy every single dish they have! The chefs are thoughtful they divide into 2 separate plates (even for one order of salad) when we are 4 of us (my husband, my parents and I) so it's easy for us to share. There's a reason, or perhaps, ~three~ for why Joon's Kitchen consistently receives stellar reviews on Yelp: hot food, outstanding taste, and meticulous presentation. The restaurant was in fact the first one I ordered delivery from since returning to Vancouver during COVID-19. My family and I ordered three of their lunch boxes: Bossam Box ($16.50), Bolgogi Box ($16), and Spicy Pork Box ($15). As per their website, the lunch box option is only available between 11:30am-4pm. Each lunch box is served with chicken karaage, mushroom salad, pickles and cauliflower, miso soup, and rice. All of these sides were good, though the chicken karaage may have fallen victim to delivery time as its exterior was not crunchy enough. My favourite side was the mushroom salad, which was reminiscent to the one served at Kosoo. The warm bed of mushrooms (enoki, portobello, etc.) were supple and buttery, adding incredible mouthfeel to the mixed greens and truffle dressing. It is certainly one bed, and meal, that you should tuck into. Out of the three lunch boxes, my favourite was the Bossam Box. The thick cuts of bossam (boiled pork belly) were succulent and flavourful, particularly when paired with the ssamjang (spicy dipping paste). Since the ssamjang is provided in a container, you really have more flexibility than the other two lunch boxes in choosing your flavour profile. The bolgogi and the spicy pork are on the sweeter and savourier side, respectively. Whereas the rice for these two lunch boxes occupies a space within the box, the rice for the Bulgogi Box is served separately, which means you get more bang for your buck! Speaking of value, I believe that the price of $15+ is justified if you consider the sheer variety offered inside each lunch box. There is a painstaking amount of time and effort involved to prepare each component to its highest quality. Though Skip the Dishes may have delivered my order, Joon's Kitchen delivered overall in taste, quality, and value. Bravo! read more

There were 2 parties in the restaurant and I had to wave the waitress down a few times to get our water refilled and to order additional food. For a Korean restaurant, I'm disappointed that the sides are not included - you gotta pay extra for it. However, we got a small complimentary plate of Korean pickled radish We got the spicy tuna tacos for appetizer and it was okay. It was $5 for 2 tacos and there were chunks of spicy tuna but the spicy sauce that they used didn't go very with the overall taste of this dish. As well, the presentation was poor cuz the chopped lettuce covered the main ingredient...spicy tuna! My bf got the beef bibimbab and he even said that it was over priced for the quality of the dish. I thought it was soggy and the egg was a big overdone so it was hard to mix. This dish came with miso soup I got the tofu kimchi hotpot and it was again, a fail. There were literally 5 small cubed tofus and the broth was way too tangy. I had to order rice on the side cuz it doesn't come with it. One of my favourite hidden Korean places in my neighbourhood. If you're coming for the first time, I recommend coming during their lunch hour and ordering their bento box so you can try a little bit of everything. Their dinner can be on the pricey side hence why I recommend lunch. I recommend the miso spicy pork and the Bulgogi as your meats. Sushi always tastes fresh as well but it's not a place primarily for sushi. This place is AMAZING. As a Korean myself, there is nothing quite like tasting your own culture's food that hits the spot exactly right. Joon's kitchen deserves the highest recommendation because it did just that. During my visit, I ordered the bulgogi taco appetizer which was delicious as well as the spicy pork entree. The spicy pork was a generous size and it brilliantly straddled the line of being subtly sweet and spicy. My companion ordered the lunch special which was also excellent. The little side dishes were included as well, and the Korean waitress was extremely friendly. Because I was only in Vancouver for a 13 hour layover, I'm extremely sad that it's so far from my hometown but it's at the top of my list when I return to the area! read more

This is a Korean run Japanese restaurant on the corner of Oak St. and 15th Ave. A gem of a place. The chefs are respectable and even came to visit our table when it wasn't busy to chat a little bit. Their waitresses are nice and responsive when we are in need of anything for our dining needs. The ambiance is nice. But the restaurant is small. So it cannot accommodate too many people. They have better lunch options than dinner options. So my recommendations would be to grab lunch here, but not dinner. Their ambiance is really nice and comfortable. But nothing extraordinary in terms of ambiance and decor. Parking can be difficult to find depending on where. Street parking on Oak Street will be paid parking or limited to residential parking. Best bet would be to find parking along 15th Ave. There are some free parking there for about 2 hours. So it's still limited. But at least it's free. If you need more than 2 hours for the meal, best to find elsewhere. Food was pretty good. They have some bento boxes during lunch, and there's good value there. Of course they have some rolls as well. Depending on the type of rolls you order, can be quite expensive and pricey. They give you unlimited soup! So that's nice. Overall. Joon's kitchen is a fairly new addition to the neighborhood. The space is warmly lit with clean, modern furniture. We decided to try their lunch deals. I ordered the nigiri box, with miso pork. There are 5 pieces of nigiri. I love the quality of the nigiri, it melts in your mouth. However, the portions are significantly smaller- dare I say, the cutest smallest ball of rice ever! I do appreciate the proportionate ratio of sahimi:rice of 2:1. The miso soup was fantastic, the side dishes also were a nice way to clean my palate. The miso pork was flavorful with loads of caramelized onions. The salad was surprisingly flavorful and well balanced - one of my favourites!!!! Service was prompt, courteous and polite :) Overall, I was very happy with the food but I wished the price was less steep. It would entice me to come back more often. Stopped here for dinner as we were in the area and found this place well reviewed on Yelp. It was certainly OK, but nothing special. We arrived at 5:30pm on a Sunday and there was only one other party seated. We ended up sitting against wall where one side uses the wall bench for and the other side sat on what looked like rectangular tree stumps. We were immediately served tea, which is normally a barley tea but they served a mint tea. Not good or bad, just different. We perused the English only menu and ended up ordering the following: - Chicken kaarage - Nice. Good portion size and the kids happily ate it. - Aburi Salmon - Not good. Probably the smallest and driest aburi salmon I've ever had. Not recommended. - Kalbi - Good flavour, but the small size is very expensive for the quantity received. Large size might be better value. - Japchae - Ok but a bit too salty. Again, expensive for quantity received. They way I look at their menu , their plates are more designed to be "individual" sized rather then family share size, so plates end up being smaller and proportionally more expensive than most Korean restaurants. Good for couples who want to try more dishes, but for a family the portions are too small too share so the cost adds up fast. I'll admit all dishes were well presented so it looks good in pictures.. Service was friendly, but a bit slow at times. Attentive enough to hear my son drop his chopsticks on the floor and she showed up with a new pair before we asked. Overall, it was OK. Acceptable, but not special enough for me to return anytime soon. read more

I decided I wanted Korean food one weekend and decided to head down for lunch to this relatively quiet spot on oak. I was the only customer at 1pm so I was served super quickly and had attentive service. There were daily specials, but I decided I wanted to try something off the main menu for my first time there. I ordered the spicy chicken bibimbap ($14) and kimchi ($2), and it was my first time ever trying bibimbap. I was reading about it while waiting for it to be served, and it's a big mix of vegetables, meat, rice, and noodles, similar to poke. However, I don't know the difference between the two besides the country of origin. Regardless, I loved the dish and how it was presented. The colors of the different vegetables, rice, and egg made the food look amazing, and it tasted awesome as well. Looking at pictures of other meals from this restaurant, it seems they respect the visual presentation of their dishes. I would be happy to go again to try some of their other dishes on the menu. read more
