Thank you, Kimpton, for the birthday treats!
    Melissa G.

I recently stayed at the Kimpton Alton Hotel while celebrating my birthday in the city. It use to be a Holiday Inn, but it was flipped in 2021, and for the better! Kimpton Alton is classified as on a 4-star hotel, but I give them 5 stars for going above and beyond. My partner booked through AMEX, and we checked in on a weekday evening. There was no room upgrade available; however, hotel staff knew that we were in town for a special occasion. Yveey at the front desk was a pleasure to work with, and she made my birthday stay one to remember! I was so delighted by the complimentary treats the team brought up to our room. We arrived just in time for social hour too, which includes complimentary beer/wine/cider from 5-6pm everyday! Kimpton Alton is located steps away from Fisherman's Wharf, and we walked and took streetcars to get around the city. The hotel offers valet service, and we had no issues with overnight parking, but it's on a first-come-first serve basis so weekends are not guaranteed. This hotel offers a comfortable stay with many cool amenities, and I'd highly recommend staying with Kimpton Alton!

I loved my stay at the Kimpton Alton Hotel. The staff, service, location, complimentary hotel bikes, and the restaurant on-site all stood out. The team truly went above and beyond, they helped me so much during check-in and check-out, with valet service, and even printing something I needed to get done. The walk to my room was a bit long, and the rooms aren't fully soundproof, so you can hear some noise at times. That said, these were minor drawbacks compared to the overall experience. I especially loved how close the hotel is to Fisherman's Wharf, making it easy to explore the area. The availability of coffee and tea was also a nice touch. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting the area.

Oh I'm so disappointed to give this Kimpton a 1 star. Glad I waited to rate this hotel! We have stayed at many Kimptons and this is the first one I'm giving one star! Both my hubby and I are IHG members, we chose this location because of the location. My hubs is like platinum member or whatever the top tier is? I'm a gold member We used our points to get free hotel stays. We were aware of the $75 parking fee, which was ok with us. No one mentioned to us that there is a $50 resort fee upon check in?! When we checked out, we paid our parking fee but little did we know that we were going to be charged these fees?! We had fees that we weren't aware of, so it sucked! We have stayed at the kimpton in Japantown and we have never had these incidental fees? So go figure

I recently had the pleasure of staying at the Kimpton Alton Hotel, and it was an absolutely delightful experience from start to finish. The hotel boasts a stunning, modern design that perfectly complements its vibrant location. The rooms are not only stylish but also incredibly comfortable, providing a true home away from home. What truly made my stay memorable was the wonderful service I received from the staff, particularly Esmeralda. From the moment I arrived, she greeted me with a warm smile and an infectious enthusiasm that immediately made me feel welcome. Esmeralda went above and beyond to ensure my stay was perfect, offering personalized recommendations for local attractions and dining. Her genuine kindness and attentiveness made all the difference, transforming a good stay into an exceptional one. The hotel's amenities, such as fitness center, was fantastic, and the location made exploring the area a breeze. I can't recommend the Kimpton Alton Hotel enough, and if you're lucky enough to be assisted by Esmeralda, you're in for an extra treat! Her dedication to providing an outstanding guest experience is truly commendable. I can't wait to return!

The Kimpton Alton Hotel is located near Fisherman's wharf. It offered a very attractive nightly rate so I booked it for a recent stay. The hotel had all the essentials. The rooms offer a record player and patrons can borrow records from the lobby. The restaurant downstairs appears to be notable in the community with a Filipino fusion menu. The lobby staff is friendly. The location is a bit inconvenient from the financial district, but the good rate is worth the inconvenience. Uber service was easy. I did not park a car. Please come and create your own adventure.

I had quite a pleasant stay here last weekend, on a trip that was a mix of business and pleasure. Even before the stay, via some email exchanges and Q&A, my experience with their customer service gave a sense of what was to follow. First, location is excellent, a stone's throw away from everything worth seeing in the area. I love hotels like these- not too 'corporate' (even if this is part of the IHG chain) and with charm without being a tiny boutique hotel. I've always had a great experience with Kimpton, and this was no exception. Also, during my stay I saw the Singapore Airlines crew, so we're all probably on to something! The very acclaimed Filipino restaurant Abaca is on-site, a DJ spinning by the front desk on evenings. Complimentary coffee bar in the morning, wine hour in the evening. Front desk staff I interacted with were great, no matter the hour. Down-to-earth is the best description that comes to mind, thinking back. Upon arrival, I first found my room nondescript, even bare bones: no artwork on the walls, lacking a certain pizzaz. BUT...once I got settled, I found myself very comfortable in the quarters. Everything is clean/not run down, and I must say one other stand-out: well-lit! I don't usually see multiple lighting options/lamps in hotel rooms during my frequent travels, so this was a highlight for people like me (working in the room, makeup application, and the like!) Would definitely recommend/return.

Excellent, safe location and within walking distance to many restaurants and the bay. Our guest room had a Alcatraz view on the top floor. Traveling with my two adult children and this room suited or needs. The beds were really comfortable and the linens PRISTINE ( my pet peeve). It's all about the bed here: the shower pressure was a bit lacking but the everything was clean. ABACA restaurant downstairs is run by a third party and serves a Filipino and American breakfast menu as well as pre fix brunch ($55pp). Servers are pleasant and you can charge to your guest room. Public spaces are sufficient, and the nightly DJ happy hour seems really popular. Grab a complimentary glass of wine or beer and mingle with younger crowd if you are in to that. Borrow a few long playing vinyl records from The front desk: each room has a record player to dive into nostalgia

    Alleged BAY VIEW

We paid for a room with a "Bayview" and it had an amazing view of the parking lot! Totally false advertising. We chose this hotel because of that and then they argued with us and made it very difficult. Bathrooms are also insane. No hooks, no magnifying mirrors, lights were out, zero places to put your stuff. Worst Kimpton I've ever stayed at. Avoid breakfast. Coffee and a pastry $21 because they include 20% tip on counter service.

Overall Average experience for the money. Outside of the great location it's an average hotel. It should be a Holiday Inn, not sure why IHG elevated as a Kimpton premier lux brand cause it's not that. The lobby is nothing spectacular. Small check in desk with a seating area. One onsite restaurant. We had a drink from the bar ($$ but strong), but did not eat there. Lots of places to eat nearby including Ghirardelli square and Fisherman's Wharf. Surisan across the street. Couple with teenager we had a double Queen room on 2nd floor. It felt very small! I think it would be too tight for 4 adults. Good thing we were only there for one night. They def maximized the space with functional storage. The room was clean, but again very standard. Looks like they tried to paint and make the room look nice with new fixtures but shoddy work. You can see light plates not aligned, the bathroom fixtures had cap covers not staying. Nothing luxe about the towels or bedding. Very standard. There is a mini fridge and safe in the room. 2 grey robes provided...I didn't see slippers. There is no coffee maker but they serve it in the lobby. Vinyl record players but no records so was no use. Maybe they lend in lobby, I didn't check. Valet parking is available for $75 plus there is $10 city parking tax on top of that (there are all sorts of city and tourism taxes so don't be surprised when you get your bill). There is a parking lot across the street. Street parking can be hard to find. Please don't leave anything in your car. You've heard the stories and they're true. Staff was friendly.

As far as visiting San Francisco goes, at least for me is location! With the Bay area being home to many excellent entertainment venues, this hotel is an excellent place to land. But even more than that, it aligns perfectly with the Kimpton standards and offers those awesomely unique amenities. Two of my favorite amenities here were the daily happy hour and the vinyl records checkout at the desk. Although I felt one of the DJ's had some most unusual music genres selected for happy hour, it is always a great way to start the evening and meet new friends. Cleanliness and customer service are clearly a priority, it is nice to stay in a clean and odorless atmosphere. The Fillipino restaurant within the hotel seemed a bit specific, but there are plenty of others within a short walk. The snack bar also offered some wonderful options for drinks and snacks. With the valet costs in SF being outrageously high, utilizing Uber was a much better option. Cheers!

The hotel has two restaurants, one for breakfast and one for bar and dinner. But there are so many good restaurants nearby as well. Convenient. I checked in late in the evening during a holiday weekend, and it was busy. The front lobby had two people checking in guests. When it was my turn at the counter, we were checked in pretty quickly and given a run down of the layout and weekend activities. Fresh water is provided right by the elevators so you can fill water bottles before heading to your rooms. And in the morning, hot coffee is provided right before you head out for the day. Pretty thoughtful. My stay was two nights, and the first night the street music and sounds came thru loud and clear. But the second night, it was quiet outside. So it's unpredictable if my stay would be relaxing or nerve racking. The room for 3 was a good size with a large bathroom, large windows of street view, and sizable writing desk, and arm chair. I got to use the gym once and it had all the general equipment and fairly large room. Upon check out, we received the kid welcome gift which was supposed to be at check in, but check in was chaotic so it was better late than never. And the staff were all very nice and friendly during our stay. We would come back to this location if we get the chance again.

However, from the very beginning to end ranged from confusion, annoyance, to plain nightmare. The check in process was confusing and and cumbersome. The intercom at the front door did not even work, and I had to call their actual "front desk" who apparently said they did not have my information on file and made me go through these annoying steps just to find my hotel room key in a lock box. The most frustrating and nightmarish experience came the next day when I lost the hotel room key (a physical key). I called the "front desk" several times but received no answer then finally got one after about 10 minutes. When I told the man at the "front desk," he told that he would have to speak to the housekeeper. After waiting for another 10 minutes, he informed me that I would be getting fined $200 for the lost room key, which is plain ridiculous, since they didn't have a replacement key (other than the housekeeper's key). I understand a $25 or $50 fee for a lost key but $200 for a freaking key???! After waiting for about 40 minutes total, he finally walked over with my replacement key and begged me not to lose it since that would mean the housekeeper can't even get in (how laughable). What's worse was that the other guests were able to use their phone or a passcode to get in since all the room had e-locks. When I asked the man at the "front desk" why I needed a physical key, he said that not all of the e-locks were working--including the one for my room. What a load BS. The property doesn't really have a real lobby, spa, and the restaurant is average, as in the quality of the food was just not top notch, and they have access to the best ingredients. They only have two elevators and are quite slow, at a busy time this can be quite annoying. The room itself was small, no real furniture, would have been nice to have a sofa and table with two chairs. There was no dresser. The bathroom was great for one, but small for two. The shower didn't have a bench, no his or her's sinks. The bed when we got into it was super soft and not supportive, when we called they did something really odd and put a board on the mattress and then a topper. Given location/amenities, I think up to around $200/night would be a fair discount rate (as of Summer 2026) Location: is good for tourists and the area in general feels safe and clean as the city has cleaned this area up a bit from previous years. Parking: $94 a day for valet (no self park.) Yep, welcome to Downtown San Francisco. You could valet park in the small garage across the street for $32 but no in/out privileges. Lobby/Check-in: It's an atrium style hotel with lobby on the 3rd floor. Check-in was easy. Lobby is nice with a bar and lots of seating with a whole other seating area to the side and behind the bar. They have their climate control too cold though in the Lobby. Dining: There's only one restaurant at lobby level with just a view of the building next door. Prices are very high but short of outrageous considering you are in a JW in the middle of San Francisco. We thought it would be hard for 2 people to use the $80 credit for breakfast. Not so when average breakfast entrees are in the $33-$38 range. We also ate dinner in the restaurant. The food for both breakfast and dinner was excellent. Not Michelin Star level of course, and overpriced, but actually pretty quite good for a hotel restaurant. Note there is a setup for a Buffet Breakfast (were told it is $52/person when open) but they didn't run it on Saturday or Sunday so there was a bit of a wait to get a seat in the restaurant for breakfast. Rooms: Rooms are decent size and well-furnished in good condition but although they don't feel outdated, they feel a little 'tired around the edges' so to speak. If you want that freshly renovated feel, you won't get it here. Bathroom size is going to vary as our large corner room with a sitting area with table had a very small bathroom and our neighbors had a smaller room but with a decent size bathroom. Street noise was minimal on the 12th floor but if you are sensitive to the noise, I wouldn't go any lower than floor 10. Views will vary but likely will be of the side of another building through what I call 'prison windows' which is a smaller than average window opening inset within a concrete looking surround. Bed was comfortable, mattress was good but felt slightly stiff/tired as though it was probably getting near then end of its lifespan but still quite comfortable. Linens very good. So overall good beds but nothing to write home about. I had read the reviews and although I typically stay in this level of a hotel I had tempered my expectations and so the stay was satisfying and served its purpose with no unpleasant surprises. If you want to be less prone to having an overcharged feeling: a) Use valet across the street or SpotHero app to find cheaper in/out parking nearby (if you have a car) and b) don't bother eating/drinking in the hotel -- go elsewhere to non-hotel restaurants to eat and drink.
