The service was very good. Front desk staff was responsive, helpful and friendly. Great location. The room was small and oddly configured, and I was annoyed that there was absolutely no place to put my folded clothes (zero dressers or shelves -- just a closet to hang things). I would have appreciated a dresser with drawers. But the room was pretty quiet, thankfully. This hotel is decorated in such an ugly decor. The lobby is an eyesore of clashing patterns and colors, and the rooms are the same way. I wish it would be redecorated with some taste. About 10 years ago, it looked great. It got tacky somewhere down the line. The hideous clashing decor that gives one a headache, the tacky animal print robes in the closet, and tacky name for the restaurant (Dirty Habit). I stayed there 2 nonconsecutive nights. The first night the music from the restaurant vibrated the bed, so we switched rooms. In the second room, I went to crawl into bed and felt something hard at my feet...it was curled up tissue next to a fresh (unwashed stain) and pubic hairs...you can infer. The linens were changed. The next stay a few days later we had to change rooms again due to a horrible odor. The second room was fine but was billed an additional $289.88. I talked to a manager who stated that is was a cleaning charge from a dog accident. My service dog is trained to ONLY "go" on command and trained to hold it up to 24hrs....additionally, I fully check the entire room before leaving each hotel to ensure I have everything and know the condition it was left.....there were no accidents. The manager claimed they have proof, so I asked for that to justify the charge, but I was told they cannot send that out....hmm: how convenient for them to charge for their uncleaned rooms! read more

My girlfriend and her boss stayed here for a conference a couple weeks ago and told me that even tho the bedframe was a little squeaky and the shower cramped, I had to check it out. Sure enough, the place was incredible. Spacious hallways and a fitness center with proper equipment to get some assisted pull-ups in. Close enough to a TJ Maxx and they served free coffee in the lobby. read more

BEWARE OF THIS HOTEL!!! 10 DAYS after we checked out, we received a random $400+ charge (we were all paid up when we left). They never said they were keeping our CC on file!?!?! Upon calling, we were notified that it was for a deep cleaning charge but were told there is no other info available??? My husband & i are extremely respectful, & only stayed 1 short night... Were barely in the room in fact, other than to shower & sleep! The room was pretty gross upon arrival (hair in the shower, hand marks all over windows) but i did not want to be a bother. Luxury and location! Everything you would expect from a Kimpton hotel. Two minutes to metro transit station and capital one arena. Half a mile walk to the national mall . Wow! The hotel Monaco has a lot of history engulfed in these walls dating back to the civil war and my personal favorite President Abraham Lincoln. It was once a post office that got totally revamped into this luxurious hotel today. I recommend room # 311 because after a full day of enjoying the national mall and the Awesome Bible Museum you will want to have plenty of room to relax and unwind. I absolutely loved my stay here! I want to give a huge shout out to Belinda Randall. She is amazing! I literally live in hotels and travel nation wide. So, when someone stands out enough for me to write a review it's because it's above and beyond the normal. Belinda was so warm and genuine at the front desk. Checking in was great, I asked some questions and she was so helpful and gave me the real, real of some food spots. I appreciate that lol. I was there for work and the days that I came back from a long, hard days work, she'd ask "how is my event going?" I was just surprised she remembered my name, let alone ask about the event. It's these little things that make a hotel feel like home for travelers like me. The Kimpton, Manaco hotel DC, please recognize you have a diamond on your team and her name is Belinda Randall! I stayed at Kimpton Monaco Washington DC 3 years ago during the Cherry Blossom Festival. I loved the hotel. The service, amenities were amazing. Loved the full size Milton Brown Shampoo, Conditioner and shower gel bottles ( I didn't have to pack toiletries) I live in NYC and I love visiting DC. I arrived May 13-15 2022 for Police Memorial Week. I booked the premier King Room. I requested it to be close to elevator if possible The picture showed the same room I stayed in 3 years ago. It had a king size bed and two chairs which were the same as in lobby photos. When I checked in after a long drive from NYC I saw they had a water dispenser w infused fruit on side of main reception desk I had to lean dispenser in order to get half of cup of water. I was parched after being on the road so long. The front desk attendant who was two feet away from never offered to have it refilled or offer me a cup of water. I'm not one to make a fuss so I let it go. I then proceeded to my room 302 when I saw that it was a very small room. Let me explain small : enough room to walk around the bed and directly to bathroom. No chairs other than a desk chair which was was hidden by a very small desk in the outside corner of the bathroom. So I called hotel from the IHG app and girl told me I was in a standard room not the premier room. She instructed me to go down to the front desk. So I did. The lady at the front desk told me that in fact that was the room I booked and would have to speak to the person that told me otherwise. I said ok. I figured maybe I didn't read the fine lines or something. So I re checked. The pictures for the room advertised the room having two chairs. I let it go. I asked about the breakfast included with my reservation. The front desk lady said yes I was entitled to breakfast costing 25$. After that amount I was responsible for additional cost. I said ok. I arrived at check in time on Friday May 13 3 pm. Saturday morning I called the front desk to find out what time was breakfast being served until. The lady advised until 11am. It was 9:45 am so I headed downstairs to the restaurant where I was greeted by a young male Hispanic w glasses a young Hispanic girl w red dyed hair color ( red as in the color red. No issues w that I'm stating it for identifying purposes). They asked if I had a reservation I said no. I did tell them I called front desk and was told breakfast was being served. I told them my hotel stay included breakfast The young man told me that was only valid Monday thru Friday. That was never stated on reservation or By front desk lady. I said I would do the lunch. The red haired girl took us to last section of restaurant where the second bad was located. (Note : there were many empty tables in front part of restaurant). We sat down at last table by back wall. There were several people at the bar being served. After 15 minutes waiting for a server I politely asked bartender if there was anyone that could serve us. She stated that she could not believe we were sat at end She spoke to a co worker and asked me to go back to table and they would have a server come over. We waited another 15 minutes no one ever came. At that point I was extremely annoyed and decided we would go to smiths for breakfast which is diagonal to hotel On the way out we saw the young man and red haired girl My friend told them how long we waited and were never served and that it wasn't cool. Both the young man and girl looked at eachother and laughed. That was EXTREMELY insulting. I get it, they're young. But when I'm paying the price I did for my stay I expect better service. It was a total disappointment and embarrassment since I had bragged about the Kimptom Monaco to my friends about my previous stay. to skimp on shower gel, body lotion , towels etc. Was horrible. I also have to mention that room 301 put out 2 dirty plates outside their door which I noticed Saturday morning and they were still there when I checked out on Sunday. I'm sure hotel management can verify this by looking at their cameras. I also used wine glasses in the room for sangria that I brought in. The glasses were never cleaned and housekeeping left them by bathroom sink still dirty. So sad to have to say that I advise you not to stay at this hotel. I'm not one to ever leave reviews but this was just an awful stay and I'm a very easy to please person. I take reviews with a grain of salt and give restaurants and hotels a chance because people can be picky. I'm not picky. But sadly I could have stayed at a holiday inn and gotten better service than what I did at this stay. I am hoping the hotel manager reads my review and can make changes for future guests. Such a lovely oasis in a bustling city. I am a massive U2 fan. Saw them last year during the Joshua Tree 2017 tour at FedEx field. It was a great show but we had to stay at a hotel that, let's just say, was less than luxurious. So this year, after getting my presale code and stalking Ticketmaster to get my premium (and ridiculously expensive) tickets, I immediately scoured the area to find the closest, nicest, reasonably priced hotel. I've stayed at Kimpton hotels on the West Coast and always felt like I was relaxed and taken care of, so when I saw a Kimpton right across the street, I was elated. The Kimpton Hotel Monaco is an older hotel, but it is beautifully maintained. From the moment you walk in you're greeted with comfort and style. The lobby is small, but has so many interesting pieces of art. After we had lunch in the Dirty Habit restaurant, my husband and I parked in the lobby for some people watching and iced tea. The Kimpton chain is good about providing free coffee in the morning, iced tea and water in the afternoon and happy hour at 5 p.m. in the lobby. They know how to make you feel at home. While our room was small (think European hotel), it was well appointed and comfortable. It's funny, when we were driving up, we talked about maybe visiting one of the nearby sites, but ended up spending an entirely relaxing and much-needed afternoon at the hotel. Definitely check out the outdoor courtyard and try the Dirty Habit for brunch, lunch, dinner or a drink. So glad I booked the Kimpton Monaco and glad I booked early. Utter insanity. It's 12:44AM and music has been thumping through my window all night. There is a DJ party in the courtyard. Multiple calls to front desk unanswered. There is absolutely no way to sleep after a long day of travel and meetings. No way to rest ahead of a full day of meetings tomorrow. The rooms are shabby and unkempt. What an absolutely disgusting way to run a hotel. It is an unfathomable way to treat guests. Never been to a hotel where the front desk doesn't bother to pick up. I'm a big fan of Kimpton hotels but this is definitely the worst one I've ever been to. It has a really good location and is in a historic building in the Penn Square neighborhood that's adjacent to Chinatown. Let's start with the cons: 1. There's only one common area bathroom which is on the third floor. That means everybody from the restaurant inside the hotel (the Dirty Habit) has to take the elevator up to the third-floor or the stairs and then stumble all the way down to these bathrooms. If your room is 317 or up then you will be affected by this noise. There is another bathroom on the top floor in the Tokyo room but it's only open to people who rent out that room. 2. This also means that if you rent out the Athens room which is on the fourth floor for a corporate event (or wedding) then all of your guests have to go down to floor to use the restroom which means that you need to plan to have longer breaks than you would normally have. 3. Peeling lead based paint throughout hotel 4. Rooms in disrepair 5. Rooms smell mildewy 6. windows sealed shut in rooms so no air flow 7. The coffee station they put out in the lobby of the hotel is moved every morning so you have to find it 8. The staff does not want to be here AT ALL. Call the front desk and ask a question to see what I mean Pros are really all the Kimpton pros but here goes: 1. Good mini bar in room in the fridge 2. Free coffee and tea in lobby 3. Where's the value? This is a beautiful hotel. Incredible repurposing of an old post office in the heart of DC's Penn Quarter. You cannot fault the look of the place. The decor is nice as are the rooms - and the high ceilings are an added bonus. I would advise anyone thinking of booking a room here, however, to just sit in the lounge and think about these things very carefully before you do: * Expensive - You will pay at least $400 per night to stay here. For that kind of money, you would expect to be blown away with service. And you will be, but not in a good way. * First Impression- Checking in: no bellman to help take the bags to the room. And the valet was missing. When I asked the front desk clerk to switch payment from my debit card to a credit card, she said she couldn't because I had used a third party to book the room. When I explained that I had gone to their site to book, she responded in a way that made it clear she thought I was stupid. *City View - Really? This is false advertising. To Kimpton, City View means a room on the outside perimeter with a view of the street as opposed to rooms on the inside with views of the courtyard. To people, a City View means an upper floor with an actual view of the city, not a room at an elevation where you have to triple check the curtain is shut so as not to give tourists and panhandlers a free show. *Restaurant - DO NOT PATRONIZE!!! The food isn't bad and the decor, as with the rest of the hotel, is nice. But, minimum drink price is $20. AND THERE IS A MANDATORY SERVICE CHARGE OF 20% REGARDLESS OF THE SERVICE. And it was mixed, ranging from adequate to nonexistent. Barely meriting 20% in one case and 10% in another. Breakfast ran over $100 dollars! Coffee (which was terrible) was $7. Bowl of about 10 berries - $15. You don't expect cheap in a nice hotel, but come on. Give use some quality for the premium prices! Oh, and last call was at 10 on a Thursday night? This is in the District's entertainment quarter not to mention that DC is one of the nation's largest cities and tells everyone how important it is. You can keep the bar open later. Can't find employees? Pay more. Clearly you have the income to afford it. *Facilities Fee - The biggest insult of all is this hidden fee. When I checked out they told me about it. I asked them what it covered, told them I didn't avail myself of the facilities and they waived it. But here's what it covers: - When you check in they offer you (not us mind you) "free" bottled water. - Every evening there is a "free" happy hour (wine only) - There is "free" coffee in the lobby. It's promoted as free anyway. But no, the facilities fee covers it. Really? Have you ever heard of hospitality? It's not hospitable if you lie about it! The only circumstance under which we would stay here again is on an expense account. Unless you can get someone else to pay your way, I highly recommend you not stay here. Come on Kimpton. Your shameless bait and switch on the facilities fee, the poor service and your phony description of your rooms should be beneath you. While the hotel was nice there are a few things that chapped my ass. The first was my bath towel, it had several holes in it and was frayed/ripped pretty bad on one corner, not something I expect in hotel of this caliber. Another issue was with the restaurant attached called Dirty Habit. We went down for breakfast at 9am and when we checked in with the hostess she asked if we had reservations which as a guest of the hotel I didn't expect to need reservations at 9am in the morning as a guest of the hotel. Then she proceeded to tell us that it would be a 10-15 minute wait! Looking around the restaurant mind you was nearly empty with the exception of maybe 6-10 other patrons. FOH staff seemed to look down the noses at us because we weren't in silk shirts and dresses. So we walked out to get breakfast elsewhere. Front desk staff was nice and Valet was nice. read more

I had a terrible experience on my first night. I was given a room in the basement without any windows. They had curtains and when you opened them it was just cardboard. No basement window at all. I was suffocating. It took me over 4 calls and a visit to the front desk to be able to get a room on the first floor. I'm very disappointed that there was a room available but they didn't offer it to me until I asked to be sent to another property to a normal room with a window. read more

I enjoyed my recent stay at this Hotel Monaco and really loved the location. It is within walking distance to tons of restaurants and museums. The building was formerly a post office and the hotel has a very stately look to it. Clearly, they are going for a vibe here because there were also giant plaster lion heads above the beds. I loved the wide hallways, though they acted as an echo chamber every time someone talked or closed a door. After entering my room I received a text from the front desk staff member who handled my check-in. I will admit that I found this to be a little too friendly; if anything was off with my room I would have happily alerted the front desk in person or via the phone in the room. Call me old fashioned! Everything else about my stay was pretty spot on. Loved the coffee and hot chocolate bar in the lobby each morning! The bed was also very comfortable and I slept great every night. Everyone here was super friendly even the ghost in the room who helped me out by turning on my bathroom light for me in the middle of the night. I'm not surprised the ghost has decided to make Hotel Monaco its home because it's a gorgeous hotel located in a great area of DC. In fact, it's about to become my home whenever I'm in the DC area. It's clean, spacious (at least in comparison to other big city hotels) and also conveniently just steps away from my office. And the hallways are breathtaking beautiful, although perhaps a little creepy looking. I could do without the large lion head above the beds, especially after a colleague pointed out we were toast if the lion happened to fall off the wall while we're sleeping. Again, unlikely, but lights turning on by themselves in the middle of night is typically also unlikely. I highly recommend for those looking for a nice hotel in the DC area and if you travel with your pup I happened to see a lot of them around the hotel as well. read more

TL; DR: Decent value for a super convenient location. Clean rooms but curt - bordering on rude - staff knock the experience down a couple of stars; particularly the restaurant and bar staff. The Hotel Monaco striking. Walking into the lobby it almost feels like you've been transported to a scene from the Great Gatsby. And, despite this feeling of opulence from an era gone, Kimpton has done a pretty decent job getting the necessary upgrades needed to remain competitive done. This includes renovated bathrooms and fitness center. However, I docked one star for the pretty outrageous resort / hotel fees given the lack of actual resort amenities. And, I docked one star - almost two - for incredibly rude bartenders and hosts got their restaurant. read more

My husband and I stayed here on Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary. John did everything he could to ensure our celebration was memorable including upgrading us to the Mediterranean suite and giving us two glasses of champagne while we waited for our suite to be ready. He even asked us how the DC United game was after we got back for the evening. The suite was very clean and nicely laid out. The stand-alone tub was beautiful and the bed was comfy. So this hotel has 1st floor rooms. The first floor rooms are in fact basement rooms. They are creepy and offer very little natural lighting. The rest of the hotel seemed pretty nice but do yourself a favor and make sure they dont put you in the basement lol. I had been dying to go to DC for a year now and was so happy to finally come for my birthday. We brought our two dogs on their first vacation that wasn't out in the woods/mountains. Anyway upgraded to an amazing suite I still miss weeks later. I loved my birthday cupcakes :) love the kimpton brand and can't wait for our next stay at a kimpton. I really wanted to love this hotel and I do except for the mold smells if you get a room on the first floor. We had a work event and we're out all day or I would have asked to switch rooms earlier. So it is my fault for waiting and It was past hours when I called the front desk to ask for some fabreeze to help and they told me nothing could be done until 7 am. Now I'm here coughing with complete regret. The front desk said they'd never heard of this complaint before but it's clear if you read reviews this isn't the first mention of a musty mold smell. I did visit a friends room on the third floor and this was not the problem. I would just highly suggest that you do not get a room on the 1st floor. Other than that and the fact that nothing can be done and I'm hoping my throat won't be too I would recommend this hotel. read more

I stayed at the Kimpton Monaco recently, and I was deeply disappointed by the first room I was provided. It was in the basement, with a corner of a "window" some 2-3 feet over my head that I think looked into the bar (I couldn't tell because it was too high but I could hear noise). It felt like a coffin. When I asked to switch to another room immediately, I was told there were no other rooms, so I paid over $300 to sleep in a bunker that night. The next morning I had to re-pack all of my things in order to change rooms, which was incredibly inconvenient. The second room was lovely, and I appreciate the staff's friendliness, but part of my stay was ruined by having to stay in a dark, dreary, fully-underground room. read more

There's a good reason Hotel Monaco is Kimpton Hotel's original flagship brand. Not cookie-cutter, each hotel is housed in creatively re-purposed historic buildings. Hotel Monaco Washington is the old General Post Office and Tariff building designed in the 1800s by the same architect who designed the US Capitol and Washington Monument. Facing the Smithsonian American Art Museum & National Portrait Gallery, this plush, boutique hotel is also kitty corner to the Gallery Place/Chinatown Metro station, a very central downtown Penn Quarter location. I've stayed at this hotel many times, most recently a few weeks ago. IMHO, the best rooms are on the 2nd & 3rd floors, with grand corridors and high ceilings and windows. I am grateful the front desk staff gave me a complimentary suite upgrade with a huge jacuzzi tub (which I didn't get a chance to use). The bathrooms are clean and the clearly Hotel Monaco-style furnishings impeccable. The beds and sheets are super comfortable. I slept better than on my own bed. The room safe is large enough for a laptop and more. The only improvement could be having a larger room TV which is almost as small as my computer monitor at home. I always I attempt to get to the hotel in time for the complimentary wine hour, 5-6 pm! read more

Bottom Line: Upscale, a little quirky and close to the National Mall, a stay in the historic General Post Office, makes for a unique experience. I am a huge Kimpton fan but admittedly, my stay here wasn't five stars like usual. For starters, I didn't like that my room was on the "first floor" better known as the subgrade basement. Moreover, I paid more to get a King size bed to find out it was actually a California King. I missed those extra four inches as did my SO when I clubbed him in the face in the middle of the night. Anyway, I realize those are minor things so lets move on to what I really liked about this hotel: - The building is very old. In fact, it was once the General Post Office (not to be confused with the "Old Post Office" being renovated into a hotel by Trump) and dates back to 1842. I will not even begin to take away the amazing transformation from office building to hotel that has transpired here. Truly, it is very cool to stay in a building that is pre-civil war. Because the building is 174 years old and is being used for something other than its intended purpose, there are certainly some quirky things here that are charming and make for a unique stay. For instance, in the basement, the floor dips down so there is adequate room to pass underneath whatever unexpected structure is overhead. Another example is the super thick (24 inches maybe?) exterior walls. - Another great feature of this hotel is its proximity to the Metro (Gallery Place station on the Red Line is right across the street), the National Mall (about 1/2 mile or 15 minute walk) and other nearby attractions (Verizon Center, Ford's Theater, National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Downtown Holiday Market (in December), etc.) - The hospitality here was generally very good except some miscommunication amongst front desk agents. The valet and bell hops were on point and the checkin process was easy. - Other things I like about this hotel was the funky but fun and cohesive décor (which I certainly expect from Kimpton) and the awesome bath products. Like all Kimptons, there is a complimentary wine reception at 5pm and I like that they also had sodas and beer. Moreover, the adjoining Poste restaurant is a convenient option for a quick meal or night cap. read more

We chose a beautiful, spacious room for Valentine's Day. The room was clean, and the front desk was very helpful with any questions we had. They even gave out roses to guest, even though I didn't receive one. It's pricey and the rooms could use a paint job ,but it was still a very luxurious place to stay. It's so worth it. read more

So Kimpton Hotels are growing on me ... which is a bummer because I am an elite member at Marriott/SPG (which I guess is now called Bonvoy) and Kimpton is under the IHG brand which is mostly icky Holiday Inn hotels. (IHG also has one of the most difficult to use rewards nights out of any hotel in regard to the black outs.) This hotel is a good representation of the Kimpton brand in that it takes a LOT of risks with interior design but they seem to work. My girlfriend is a little less impressed than I am with Kimpton's mixing of patterns and colors but I think it's fun. If you are someone who prefers a more neutral/sterile color and pattern combination ... and doesn't like 'clutter' (there are several giant animal statues made out of crystals and metal wire strewn about the hotel ...) this hotel might not be for you. The reason I subtracted one star ... and really almost subtracted two stars ... is for the bullshit policy of charging a 'resort fee' at what is a HOTEL. Hello ... the fact that you have a big bar with outdoor seating and fire pits doesn't mean I want to pay $22 upfront and then $15 - $18 per drink there! Sure, Kimpton has it's 'famous' beer/wine reception in the lobby for an hour each night. A nice perk for sure ... but technically you are paying $22 extra for your hotel room and the 'wine reception' is included in that ... so those who can make the time to go will get a couple glasses out of an $8 per bottle wine and a deviled egg or two. Big whoop. Stop with the shitty resort fees hotels in the middle of a city because I am going to start calling them on this bullshit smoke and mirrors practice ... and I hope you will too in your reviews. (You don't even have a pool or hot tub.) Beyond that ... very interesting rooms. Whatever you do ... based on other reviews ... AVOID THE LOWER LEVEL ROOMS! I emailed the hotel in advance after reading several one star reviews mentioning the lower floors and asked to be placed on a higher floor. No answer. I called a few days later and nobody seemed to have gotten my email. The person mentioned she couldn't guarantee a higher floor room but would make a note. (Note to hotel ... I would have cancelled right then, if I wasn't past the cancellation window ...) Thankfully, we were assigned a higher floor ... which happened to be the same floor as a wedding was going on and the booming bass could be heard as if it was right inside my room until 10 p.m. Luckily we were going out for the evening. The staff here was the worst part of the stay. They were friendly ... but there were A LOT of mistakes made during our stay. No response to an email through the website ... I emailed through their 'stay in touch' box on their website with a room request which went unanswered. I called the morning of my stay at 11 a.m. and was told my room was ready and to come check in. When I got there, they told me that person I spoke to made a mistake and my room was not ready. It wasn't ready until 4 p.m. The front desk agent gave us a $10 bar/restaurant voucher (to use it, we ended up spending $62 on a breakfast we hadn't intended to eat ... tricky) to 'make up for the trouble' and then later I found out that I was entitled to the voucher anyways because of my rewards status level. When I checked out, the bill was completely wrong and they had charged us for another night by mistake. They said they'd take it off the bill but when I called back, nobody knew anything about it and I had to speak with someone in accounting to have it taken off. The only other thing I will mention is that the bar/lounge attracts a very noisy group of 20 year olds who wander the halls of the hotel looking for the bathroom and drinking on the benches. Annoying for guests ... Saturday night between a young wedding and the bar crowd, the hotel atmosphere inside felt a bit like a college town dance club. The fresh cookies at the front desk, fantastic interior design and manager's 'wine and beer reception' make it worth it to stay here (as do the high ceilings, spacious rooms and upscale vibe) but the service issues, loud/young club crowd and resort fee are suspect. read more

Had a good weekend stay in this convenient, interesting property. The building has been repurposed from a federal office structure, so the rooms are pretty good-sized with tall ceilings that give it an airy feel. The rooms are decorated in the typical Kimpton vein--lots of colors and patterns. It's probably not what you'd want in your home, but it makes for a distinctive and energizing space for a few days. The bathrooms are really nothing special and there's some crumbling plaster in the window casings, etc., but overall the facility is spiffy. The lobby is colorful and has lots of seating for the nightly complimentary wine service. They had three offerings of vino and a couple of different beers the night I was there; this perk is one of Kimpton's best offerings. (The Kimpton touch of fun even extends to the Do Not Disturb cards, which proclaim the room a "Rest Wing".) The attached restaurant, Poste, is standard bistro--nothing remarkable, but it does the job. I did notice that late on Saturday night, there were some serious imbibers there that may have been overserved. The location is great, with the Gallery Place Metro stop just across the street, the National Portrait Gallery neighboring the hotel on one side and fantastic tapas restaurant Jaleo on the other. read more

I attended a holiday party at the kimpton and I have to say that I was a little disappointed when I left. The venue itself was nice and our banquet area was lovely, however the food left much to be desired. The hors d'oeuvres clearly came out of a bag. I'm aware that a few hot hors d'oeuvres at a typical hotel come out of a bag, however it never should look or taste like it in my opinion. The food was also room temp to luke warm at best and could've used a bit more flavor. Also the servers could've been a bit more knowledgeable about the food items, as they stated that some items didn't contain beef when they did. This can be troubling especially when you have food restrictions. read more

We stayed here one night for a little staycation! The hotel is beautiful and is in a great location near some of our favorite bars and restaurants! Our room: we payed for a deluxe room with a king bed. We applied for early check in and they said that we could check in early but it would the first floor. That sounds great, however the 1st floor is actually a basement with no windows. This didn't take away from the experience but it was unfortunate to pay the same price for a less visually pleasing room. Also, this basement is under their attached bar Dirty Habit. We heard loud base music majority of the time. Elevator: the elevator was broken while we were there. We were one floor down so no biggie. But definitely stunk for the people on the higher levels!! Overall, we loved our stay! Besides the room situation, we would stay again! read more

The Hotel Monaco in Washington D.C. is located in a National Historic Landmark, the General Post Office building, and was a perfect setting for a good friend's wedding a couple weekends ago in July. The first all-marble building in Washington D.C. it was patterned after the Roman Temple of Jupiter and was designed by both Robert Mills (designer of the Washington Monument) and Thomas Walter (an architect for the U.S. Capitol). Entering a building with such history and seeing how the main post office area and sorting sections were transformed into a lobby and restaurant leaves you wanting to explore more and more of what this place has to offer. In addition to attending a wedding here, I was a guest of the hotel as well. The location could not have been better... a couple blocks from the National Mall, right across from National Portrait Gallery, a quick hop and step from the Chinatown subway stop, it was the perfect location to venture out and explore this nation's capital. Whether by public transit or your own vehicle, it is easy and convenient to travel to. Free valet parking is available for guests. Check-in was a breeze. I received an email the day before to check in and detail when I might be arriving, any special requests (in my case, to be located near to the other wedding guests), and unique room specifications such as a goldfish for the room, foam pillows, etc. As I entered the hotel on my arrival, I was met with an eclectic assortment of furniture, colors, and decor. The front desk staff were quick, efficient, and welcoming. If you sign up for the Kimpton Rewards Program ahead of time, you will receive a $10 credit to the room's mini bar or to the Poste Moderne Brasserie within the hotel. Attached to the lobby is the just mentioned restaurant/bar with a beautiful outdoor courtyard area. I stayed in a Queen Deluxe room which was cozy space-wise but considering it was just me, the size was inconsequential. The height of the vaulted ceiling made up for what this room lacked width-wise. It was an interesting mix of old and new decor... right down to the zebra print bathrobe supplied in my armoire. The goldfish in my room was a nice touch, along with the fully stocked mini-bar, drawer of snacks, maps, corkscrew, yoga mat w. dvd, so on and so forth. If you are not one to require room service every day of your stay, hang the card on your door indicating so and you will receive a $5 credit to the restaurant downstairs. As someone who loves a good deal, I enjoyed racking up my credits! There are a number of other amenities to take part in here that I didn't have a chance to utilize... in-room spa treatments, the fitness center, pet-friendly details, etc. As for the event space itself, it was a beautiful, well-organized 4th floor venue with staff who were very friendly and welcoming. I would certainly put this place on the list of contenders if you are looking for somewhere to hold your event. I would absolutely stay here again if I visit Washington D.C. in the future. Loved idea of restored historic building. BUT Noisy, inefficient, a bit down at the heels. Check in at 3:15, room not ready for another 15 ( and inattentive staff at front desk) In town on business, early to bed early to rise. Except: thumping music in the courtyard. Weeknight, but Bar music going at 7 when I return so no recharge and quiet after a long day. When I called down after 10, the front desk person said they turn it down later. When? "Maybe 10:30?" Nope. Same on night 2. The safe is on floor in dark closet. There are no towel racks in bathroom. The tv is skewed too high and to one side so kink neck to view. Coffee maker is on request. On bright side the shower pressure is excellent. I'd say: may be fine for a Caps game or other partying on the town gig-- but serious business? Nah. read more

Pros: Location Cons: The room we stayed in was lower level - basically a basement room with a window view of the bushes above. Felt like we were in a cave. The room smelled of dirt and mold/mildew, carpet damp and the air was either too cold or too warm. The moisture level with A/C on was gross - tried turning on heat to take dampness out of the air - also humid and gross. Overpriced Room - 2 double, $500 (rm rate, Tx, etc) with additional $65 Valet fee - We could have stayed at any hotel and just Ubered our way around. I most definitely would not recommend this hotel for someone with allergies or asthma. The air quality needs to be addressed. (I just now read other reviews saying the same, I should have checked reviews before my stay). We accepted to stay at the lower level because I am a light sleeper, the hotel desk clerk let us know the lower level would be more quiet. (Upper rooms street noise and also there is a restaurant/catering floors with more noise). Note: When we left the hotel - someone was smoking weed outside the entrance. There are better options. Old building shouldn't mean poor air quality. I will never stay at this hotel again. read more
