So I was on my way to a Masonic event at the Lee Lockwood Masonic building. Across the street was this red and white eating place. I decided to give it a try and was very pleasantly surprised by the service and great food. My food was hot and extremely tasty. The atmosphere was friendly and reminded me of the early 50/60s burger places around Houston where I grew up. It will be my go to spot for future meals while in Waco! read more

Drove in today from Dallas to meet my husbands family for his birthday lunch. The restaurant was busy when we arrived but the waitress was fairly prompt about taking our order and bringing us drinks. There seemed to be something wrong with the fountain drink machine as everything had a bleach like taste to it, which we told or waitress but she didn't seem too concerned about it. About 30mins after we originally ordered our food they brought my side salad out and apologized for taking so long due to being busy. At this point we told her we understood they were busy and it was no problem. The side salad consisted of old browning shredded taco lettuce and a couple of cucumbers and was literally drenched in a lattice work design of dressing. As we were waiting for our order five other tables of customers who arrived after us (in one case an hour after we arrived) were served their meals. After waiting an hour and twenty minutes we tried stopping the waitress on her way to another table and she told us that of course everyone else had their food first because salads and onion rings come out first (which would have been understandable if five or six other tables wouldn't have been served their full meals before us) and we ended up leaving and going to a different restaurant for lunch. I'm not really sure why we couldn't get service yet everyone else could nor why the waitress didn't apologize or even give us a reason why we weren't served. read more

Excellent service, great diner. Usual diner fare, but my favorite is the grilled ham and cheese. The onion rings "are not fresh," which may not matter to some. The French fries are hand cut on site and I've heard from 2 different guests that the burgers are great. The fried pickles are not frozen. They're good, just a little too salty (and I love salt!). Update. Ive gone a few more times and while the short order grill fare is quite tasty, the experience varies; sometimes the wait to get your order is just too long. That may be a deterrent if you are on a short lunch break and the place is full. I've only been one time, and that was for lunch. They had a daily special on a catfish plate and it was delicious: flaky fish with a unique breading. Plan on going again someday soon. read more

We loved Kim's!!! We got chicken fried steak, steak fingers & hotdogs. We took it to go and it was still super yummy by the time we got home to eat it. We agreed that the gravy is really good. I loved my mashed potatoes and green beans - they do the green beans right by cooking them up with bacon! Yum!!! The hotdogs were good, but it was the steak fingers and CFS that stole the show. I'm actually excited to try their pork chops, chicken fried chicken & catfish specials. Also, I can't leave out the bottled drinks. My husband got a Texas Red Creme thinking it would sort of like Big Red. Oh my gosh! It was so much better! It was like ice cream in a bottle. You can really taste the real cream. Our kids stole them from us they were so good. They have about 12 different flavors. The decor was really fun as well - lots to look at so I know next time we go in, my kids will enjoy it. I ordered the chicken fingers and a few minutes into eating, I looked down and was horrified to discover a hair that was fried into the breading. We did not want to make a scene, because this does happen sometimes in the food industry. We informed the waitress of what had happened. She looked down and said "Ew, that is gross" and offered me a replacement, but did not apologize. My grandfather ordered a chocolate malt with his food and it arrived at our table fifteen minutes later than our food did. The waitress personally made the malt because it was taking so long, and there was a hair floating on top of the malt. We informed the waitress of this incident and she took the malt away. My grandfather only got to take one sip of this malt, and by this time no one had an appetite anymore. We waited and waited for the check to arrive at our table, and the waitress did not bring it. When my grandfather and aunt walked up to the register to pay and politely asked the waitress if we would be charged for the food we sent back, she said "of course not" and quickly typed the prices into the register, then my grandfather paid. She did not offer him a receipt or show us a check. However, he gave her a tip because he did not want to blame her for what happened. Later in the car, we were talking about the experience and noticed that the bill was still a bit high. We added up the prices of everyone's meals and noticed that our waitress did not take off the meals we sent back. Kim's is a local legend; they used to be a franchise owned and operated by a Waco family, and this location on Waco Drive is the last remaining restaurant after all the others closed down years ago. Still run by the Stanley family, the place is a great little hole-in-the-wall diner that brings back a retro feel and the good vibe of supporting local business when you eat there. Most of the employees are still family members, and it shows in their banter behind the counter; most of them know their customers and regulars and will greet them by name, remember their favorite drinks, etc. We work just a few blocks over and eat there once every two weeks or so, and they know our names, what we like on our burgers, and to give me a side of thousand island for my french fries without me even having to remind them. The place is usually full of older patrons, many of whom probably remember when Kim's was in its heyday and regarded as one of "THE PLACES" to eat in Waco. They get a nice rush at breakfast and a big push right around lunchtime, but most of the time it's no problem at all to find a table or booth and get your food pretty quickly. The prices here are fantastic, with daily specials (get 'em while they last, they only make a limited quantity each day) to stretch your budget even further. The portions are large, especially on dishes like chicken fried steaks, and the burgers are delicious (you can even ask for them charbroiled if you want that smoky flavor!). They have steak fries or skinny fries, as well as tater tots, onion rings, fried cheese sticks and more. They even have a freezer with pie and cake slices for dessert! The food is pretty standard fare, with a breakfast menu and then the lunch one full of sandwiches, burgers, fish, chicken fried steak, barbecue, and other southern staples. Some of the sides could use more seasoning, namely the vegetables, which can be sort of bland, but mostly the food is pretty good. My recommendation still stays with the burgers though, as they are always flavorful and cooked just right. The decor outside is cool, with the original sign from the 50s and the idea that a carhop should greet you at your window. Inside is much darker, with dim lighting, dark wooden paneling, and unflattering overhead lights. There is plenty of parking and even a drive-through so that you can call ahead with your order and save the wait time. All in all, I love Kim's and will continue to eat there as long as I'm in the area, and their loyal herd of regulars will probably agree with me! read more

Lived up to every expectation of what a greasy spoon should be!!!! Burger was hot and tasty, the fries were fresh cut potatoes with just the right amount of grease. My Momma took me here to show off the neat Coca-Cola decor. It is a quaint, clean novelty cafe building meticulously restored with replica 50's, 60's furnishings. Location is historic and convenient with original parking and signage. The group had burgers and a chicken sandwich which were all nicely prepared and quickly presented after ordering. I had the grilled pork chop special instead of my fave chicken-fried steak dinner. Classic pre-made chilled chopped house salad with homemade ranch dressing was very fresh and tasty. The two thin boneless chops were well seasoned and cooked to perfection served beside some of the best hand-cut French fried potatoes I've ever had...almost just like Momma used to make! All for a very fair price. I'd be remiss in not mentioning our waiter(assistant manager) who was inexperienced but super-attentive and professional. So glad we found this place. Luckily we were staying close by or we would have missed it. We went for a late lunch and had their special of the day, chicken fried steak, with fried okra and homemade mashed potatoes. The steak was fresh and hand breaded. Very good. Now for the waitresses. We had Gabby. What a gem! She was very personable and to.d us to come back. We did that evening for dessert. I had milkshake and my husband had pecan cobbler with a scoop of ice cream. Good. Then since it was convenient, went there for breakfast. Breakfast was typical. The manager waited on us and we know why the waitresses are so friendly, as she was just as personable. Really excellent food at reasonable prices. I come down to Waco 3-4 times a year and work a few blocks away. Nice to have such a good place to eat within walking distance. Patty melt is outstanding, meat is always juicy. The chicken strips are excellent and gigantic! Unless you are a competitive eater, stick with the 4 piece version. Service has always been very good so that's a plus as well. And unlike some theme places (like Rainforest Cafe) the prices are more than reasonable. read more

I got the patty melt here and the jalapeño poppers. Both were delicious! This place is really cute. It's a diner and has red/white decor everywhere. It's a casual place and if you're looking for a yummy, greasy burger this is the place for you. I wouldn't say this place is healthy but it sure is tasty. When you see the outside area and it's the old malt shop look and you go in and expect the same type of food that was served in the 50's -60's you are very disappointed. The cheeseburger was just plain horrible; the cheese was like a white type glob, the pattie was no where near 1/3 # and was a pressed pattie like you'd get at McDonalds, fries were greasy and no flavor; same way for the steak fingers. Waitress dropped off the food and never came back to refill the drinks or see if everything was okay. Will not go back again when in Waco, there's too many other places to eat that are good. read more
