I found Kim's Hair Salon through ChatGPT after searching for a Korean wave perm in New York, and I'm genuinely so glad I went. Kim did my hair and Po helped advise throughout the process. Po was great about communication both over email and in person. I appreciate that she set clear expectations upfront, quoted exactly 3.5 hours (and she was spot on), and gave a total price of $480 including tax and tip - which included hair wash, trim, bang trim, root perm, and Korean wave perm. For context, I've added a photo of my starting hair which was virgin, no perm or dye, and pretty straight. Po recommended adding a perm for the roots, which I hadn't considered, and I'm so glad she suggested it. The second photo shows the result with light styling using their tips (twisting while blow-drying and a touch of serum), the last photo is with zero styling after sleeping with damp hair. Third place in NYC I've gone to get a perm in the past year. Previous places were inconsistent and over permed leaving me with "broccoli" head before. Just wanted a nice natural wavy perm, or "Korean" perm. The hair stylist Sue (or is it Soo?) did my hair. Came out much better than my previous perms. At the $130 price point for perm and cut, can't really beat that for NYC. Didn't get to see the cute white dog since he was on a day off so hopefully next time. Ever since my OG stylist moved, I've only been getting my hair cut in California when I visit home, but I think I've finally found my go-to salon here in NY! I chose Kim's Salon because my friend goes here for his hair and told me the stylists here are very good. I couldn't agree more tbh - for background context, I'm new to cutting my hair super short and have been so so nervous about finding someone who can do exactly what I want without giving me the traumatic Asian bowl cut I had as a child. I ended up getting a cut and down perm and am overjoyed with the results. My stylist (I think she is also the owner) was SO sweet and Yeji helped communicate exactly what I wanted. You can really tell they care about their craft/customers - from the wash, the cut, and styling afterwards - everything is done with precision and care. Even at the very end, my stylist was so incredibly meticulous and made sure the layers/length were exactly perfect. I can't wait to come back! P.S. - if you have a lot of ear piercings like I do, they make sure not to touch them/cover them up during the wash and cut! Im not sure why there are some bad reviews. Maybe it's the language barrier? The only complaint that I had was that there was only one person so she couldn't handle it all by herself. The hairstylist had to turn down so many walk- ins. Because of that she didn't exactly have me sit down in the chair at my appointed time. I asked her if it's always like this and she said this week has been, but no appointments were made for today so they didn't have help. I could tell she was overwhelmed. I gave her a nice tip! I went to get a digital perm, but she suggested to get a setting perm which gives bigger curls. I'm glad that I did as it came out well. The contraption was weird as always, but I've seen it before in Korea so nothing new. I will probably be going back next year for my annual hair cut and style. read more

I had an extremely disappointing experience. I grew out my hair specifically to get a perm, during the perm they asked me how long I wanted my hair, I showed them the reference photo below and I specifically said I wanted it to still cover a bit of my eyebrows AFTER the perm. My stylist started trimming off my hair and I was concerned that she was cutting it too short. I raised my concerns with her and asked if she might be cutting it too short, and she reaffirmed me that it will be fine, since I'm "only doing a waving perm not a curly perm it will not shrink the hair too much." When the perm was done my jaw dropped and I nearly cried because it was nothing like what I asked. It ended up being exactly what I was afraid of happening - way too short. They started telling me that it is what I asked for, because when you stretch the hair out it still covered my eyebrows, well seriously... that's why I asked for it to be that length AFTER the perm. Don't get me wrong, I don't have anything against the staff, they were friendly people and even the girl at the desk was empathetic about what happened but I'm very disappointed at their level of skills and expertise. read more

Called to make an appointment. Arrival day, arrived on time, was still asked to wait 30 minutes. I don't mind. Was watching the male with glasses hair cutter use hair clippers in a weird way where he would swipe back and forth consistently sideways against the comb to cut, that should've been my warning #1. My hair was permed 3 months ago prior to this, I just needed a reperm and fix up. Sat down, showed desired hair style, he replies "ah, korean hair cut, okay." Assuming he's been giving everyone the similar cut and perm, should've turned out fine. Goes straight to cutting hair, no wetting, no wash yet. The hair clippers skills were subpar, no proper fade, left a 1.5 ~ 2 on my neck, sides not clean/sharp, not sure what he did on the back. He starts the perm process after about 15min of cutting. I was concerned since the curl rods seemed small compared to when I got a perm from another spot per my last session. Finished rolling, puts me on machine, I sit there for a good 10min. A customer comes in, and he seats them, he then prepares an alarm buzzer next to me, and he goes off to cut that person's hair. Buzzer goes off and I'm sitting there an additional 10min thinking the perm process is a little too long for such tight curls before he leads me back to the styling chair. Applies some foamy substance before he takes off the rods, and I'm looking at my ahjumma looking hair. Never had crazy curls before, and surely wasn't what I asked for... He touches up, cuts parts that looks off mainly to the back of my head, applies the curl cream, takes his 5 second video of the back of my head and says done. Didn't even show me a mirror peak at the back of my head to make sure if okay. Not sure why this subpar mediocre experience was $130 excluding tips... either he's too busy rushing me out to take care of next customers, or just doesn't care. My hair texture is normally dry and coarse and my last perm somewhere else somehow made it healthier, but this perm session here dried it out, made it frizzy, and.... not sure what I'm looking at. This salon was in a super convenient location, prices were great ($25 for haircut), and had great reviews! I booked an appointment with high hopes. Unfortunately I was disappointed. Long story short, I asked for long layers and curtain bangs -- instead I received a rushed haircut resulting in choppy unblended layers, an uneven length, and my bangs untouched. I first got my hair permed here in December. It came out perfectly and was exactly what I wanted. The problem was that I live in Brooklyn and didn't want to trek all the way up to Queens to get it redone. In March, I went to a different salon closer to where I live. THAT WAS A MISTAKE. The other salon damaged my hair and it wasn't the right style. I waited a couple of months and then returned to Kim's. Thankfully, the stylists at Kim's Hair Salon were able to treat my damaged hair and still give me the fabulous perm I wanted. I get compliments on my hair all the time.
