Finally stopped by after hearing so many good things about this place over the last few years. This is a small, casual, and very unsuspecting sushi joint for something with such high reviews. There is an extensive amount of specials to choose from. Was very impressed with the crispy rice with crab.
I've been coming to Kim's for over a decade, and it's always been one of my favorite sushi spots. I used to rave about it and recommend it to everyone. Unfortunately, over the past year, I've noticed the specialty rolls have gotten smaller and smaller, to the point where it's become disappointing. The taste is still great, but it's hard to justify paying $25+ for a roll that looks like the one in my attached photo/video. At that price, I'd expect a portion that reflects the cost. It feels like the value has steadily declined, which is frustrating as a long-time customer. I genuinely hope this is something they address because I'd love to continue supporting and recommending Kim's. In today's economy, spending that much on such a small portion just doesn't feel worth it anymore. Also, the music has become another downside. It's poor in taste and not very enjoyable, it takes away from what used to be a great dining experience.
Overall great place, good vibes super courteous staff. Tuna tartare was amazing! Sushi that we tried were just Ok, nothing screaming exceptional and could be because of what we picked. I wanted to start with something basic to get the feel, so tried their Salmon, California & Tuna rolls. I found these sushi a bit dry, specifically the tuna roll. I would definitely go next time a try some chef specials. I would recommend this place
I love Kim's! I was introduced to Kim's years ago and when I ordered for myself it was during Covid times so I never had a chance to sit in. This past weekend I was able to dine in with my friend around 5:30 pm on a Sunday and we were able to be seated. I did call in advance to find out about reservations and they said it was first come first serve no reservations. We were stared off with complimentary miso soup and salad with house dressing, that dressing was incredible. My friend ordered the edamame and I ordered the Kani salad it was so fresh and refreshing. My friend ordered the Philadelphia speciality roll, I ordered the west orange roll and we both shared the Tony roll. I love that you can have certain rolls deep fried, or the choice of protein seared or grilled so many options and so fresh! The location is pretty small but mighty! Love it and can't recommend enough
was not impressed. Very inauthentic, and simply didn't really enjoy it too much. A lot of fried roll options which felt pretty heavy but even their traditional rolls weren't anything to write home about. Pretty cramped space getting in and between tables and oh my lord the bathroom ... my big boyfriend couldn't even fit in there. so tiny!!! Service was kind, but the food took around 45 minutes to come out. Overall, i didn't absolutely hate this place but i definitely wouldn't recommend or return.
I really enjoyed Kim's sushi. The service was great very attentive. The Marcelo roll was my favorite. I was full after one but my husband had to order another. The restaurant is cozy so you should get there early. If you're a sushi novice you will like the seared options as well as the tempura options. I enjoyed the freshness of the tuna and I will definitely be trying their sister restaurant Ilpoom.
This was such a great find! The sushi is so fresh and delicious! The service was great as well! The staff makes sure you are taken care of and you can see that they are so many returning customers. We got some rolls and some sashimi pieces and everything was really good! We'll definitely be coming back!
Went for a solo dinner after work. Here are my thoughts: Atmosphere: casual, cozy Decor: Asian inspired, walls have framed post it notes from customers Music: elevator music Food: morris roll, edamame, miso soup, house salad with ginger dressing, pork & leek gyoza -- All the food was so tasty. Their miso soup is probably the best I've ever had (not exaggerating!) Drinks: had a hot tea. Not sure if they serve alcoholic beverages Service: super fast and friendly Good for: quick casual lunch/dinner
There is truly no place like Kim's Sushi. You are always greeted with friendly faces, served complimentary miso soup and salad (per entree), and surrounded by hand written post-it notes from people who love Kim's Sushi as much as you will! I've loved Kim's sushi ever since their original restaurant in Lincoln Park. They used to sell fresh seafood in their restaurant i the original location. We've always love their dragon roll, shrimp salad roll, Philadelphia roll. After the next gen took over, they kept the classic rolls and got creative with their rolls and added a wide selection of rolls with the right combination of ingredients. We like Jorge, French kiss, volcano, Elizabeth roll. But we have not had any bad roll from Kim's. It is true that it's own by Koreans, but Kim's sushi just has a flavor that no other sushi restaurant has. You'll have to try it to understand. Service is always excellent both for takeout and dine-in (back in the days but I heard the dining room has been reopened). The decor is also modern and friendly. We ordered a sushi boat for takeout this time. Everything was great. Must try sushi restaurant.
Great like place for sushi, very nice and friendly staff, the food is awesome ,just make sure you BYOB because they do not sell alcohol. Good for kids also very friendly ambient. The awesome sushi is also very well priced,and normally they trow in a couple freebies.. great experience overall the missing star is just because the place needs an update on decor/style read more
Kim's is a little sushi shack that will surprise you. It's the under dog of sushi shacks. the sushi is at a great price, the service always smiles, and the restaurant often gives you something on the house. the place has about a dozen small tables. if you have a big party, they'll put together some tables. there's also a sushi bar with about 5 seats. this place has a neighborhood feel about it. kim's feels warm and welcoming. every time we've been there, they always give us a couple of sushi on the house. read more

Read some reviews and tried this sushi place. We got French Kiss roll, Edamame, Eel Avocado, Dragon roll, Seared Salmon, Elizabeth roll, West Orange, Crazy Shrimp Temp, and Sashimi. My husband and I really it. Sushi and our sashimi are very fresh. They also gave us a Marcelo Roll on the house Highly recommend! read more

This place used to be a little hole in the wall they have since expanded because of how many people come from all over to have this sushi! And for good reason. It is the best sushi I have tried in New Jersey. The fish that they use is extremely fresh they are master at serving up the best rolls and classics. Always give something on the house as well. The service is always great. I cannot express how much I love this place. It truly is worth it! The French kiss roll will blow your mind. Fishy goodness with a hint of lime ;) read more

Wow wow wow is all i have to say about Kim's. I came here with one of my girlfriends and we were impressed with the sushi. The place is tiny and cramped and dimly lit. The service is great, very prompt, and they don't rush you. It feels like a sushi dive bar inside. I got a sushi set with a salmon roll and a crunch roll (cannot resist crunchy sushi). All the fish was so fresh. Lately i have an obsessed with raw salmon and Kim's was light and buttery. They bring you an orange a t the end of the meal and we got two complimentary pieces of tuna sushi. I was very impressed and will definitely be back :) read more

We came the night before Mother's Day Came because of Yelp reviews Don't let the crappy interior and exterior fool ya They had some good food going on in this place. I've only found one other place in Jersey Hoboken- where I can find good sushi. Line was out the door but I got seated quickly with my son and husband I'd like to say it's because Im FABULOUS But I just got lucky. People were standing around for to go orders We waited a bit for the main courses to come out as they did give us a lot of complimentary items. Kim's sushi is a GEM located in West Orange. It's easy to miss and looks like it was once a laundromat. Parking is scarce and the seating inside is also quaint. But IMO, that's usually the sign of a great hole-in-the-wall, mom & pop joint. Kim's Sushi is just that. I peeped the menu beforehand and noticed some of the good specialty rolls were on the pricier side $14-20, but decided I'd at least try one. (Broke college kid here.) The rolls I ordered were Jenna and Kim's Tempura. The Jenna roll was SO GOOD. I would come back just to order that again!!! It has sweet potatoes, cream cheese wrapped with crab and topped off with crunchy tempura. It had a great balance of flavors! The Kim's Tempura was just okay. It had tuna, salmon, crab, avocado and masago; topped with a teriyaki sauce. Maybe there was just too much going on, on top of it being fried? Didn't know that was a thing until I compared it to the Jenna Roll. As we waited for our food, we were given Miso Soup. It was excellent and honestly some of the best Miso soup I've had in a while. Their salad with House dressing was also tasty. The customer service was beyond amazing. We were given free edamame as we waited for our rolls. Then we were generously served a specialty roll, The Summer Roll, (an $18 value) on the House. It was delicious!! It had shrimp tempura, cucumber, cream cheese and crab salad. They also gave us a vegetarian roll since we had quite a few vegetarians in our party. Lastly, they gave oranges as a palate cleanser and Wrigley gum with our check. Their customer service really puts the whole experience on another level for me. I can see why they have so many committed customers, in-spite of having a small space and scarce parking. This place is such an amazing sushi restaurant. It's just a small venue, but the sushi menu and selection is vast and the quality is superb. Every time I visit the restaurant, I'm always super excited to try new kinds of sushi as well as have them surprise me. At each visit, they will give you an on-the-house dish for you and the people you are eating with. I've had seared tuna, seared shrimp, sashimi salad, etc. Those are actually the BEST! I'd recommend so many things on their menu, but during my last visit, I really enjoyed the Elizabeth Roll and the Spicy Crispy Crunch!! If you're browsing on Yelp right now to look for a place to indulge for sushi today, don't miss out on Kim's Sushi. Make sure to give it a try! P.S. I was really wanting to love this place! But, it fell just short of our favorite local place. My friend got the spicy tuna and the spicy yellowtail rolls. The tuna was very fishy smelling so that was not a hit. Fishy smelling sushi makes me doubt the freshness of the ingredients. The spicy yellowtail they said was very good. I got 3 vegetarian rolls- sweet potato is alway my favorite and it was great here too. The mango avocado was not my favorite flavor combo. And the cucumber avocado was okay too. We did pick up so we got free soups and salads with every $10 we spent. We ended up getting all salads bc the ginger dressing sounded good. I didn't mind the dressing, though I wouldn't use the whole container to start with (that's my mistake). My friend didn't really like the artificially tasting ginger. Next time we'll try the soup. I did appreciate the to go packaging. They even packed disposable soy sauce containers similar to what you'd get if you ate there. The spicy sauce was also good. Typically most places will separate vegetarian sushi from the rest. At Kim's even though it was in two containers, it was mixed and I really wish it was packed apart. If you're ordering and would like it separate I would try making a note in the order. We will try again because it's so well reviewed and change our order up a bit. read more

Kim's Sushi is on another level similar to the ethereal plane (4E of course, not the new revamped 5E). The food is akin to a masterful art piece that mesmerizes your soul and tantalizes your heart. The service is also fantasmic with a full staff of eight bustling plus Mr. Kim hustling himself, greeting guests and personally saying thank you to all his patrons. My family has been going to Kim's for years now and it is truly the best. The staff, the taste and the quality are all top notch and the best in the area. For Mother's Day, we placed an order the day before online and picked up for lunch. We got two sushi sets and Kim's special roll and they threw in a Manhattan roll on the house! They are great about Covid protocols and I always feel safe getting takeout from them. read more

Over priced and over rated. What's in the picture cost me over $18, plus tax and tipping, the total was $22. I left still hungry. When the kitchen staff (non Asian) brought out my miso soup, she grab the bowl from the top with her entire palm covering the bowl. Asian soup can be drank from the bowl directly. It is a big turn off seeing someone's 5 fingers all touching the brim of the bowl. read more

If you want to have some bomb ass Sushi, this is the place to go! Their menu is filled with a variety of different types of sushi rolls, delicious appetizers, and they even give you unlimited fresh soups and salads! My boyfriend and I have been here for dinner twice, and man this place never disappoints! We always order the octopus skewers, different sushi from the special sushi menu, and you can always mix or request on what you want on your roll! The service here is exceptional. They're really are so attentive! Also, they give your free sushi samples on the house! You can not beat that! I highly recommend this place if you love sushi, love inexpensive dinner dates, and support the locals! You can't beat the price here for what you get. This place is a must place to visit! read more

Cute little spot with delicious sushi! Everything is fairly priced. I ordered a good amount of nigiri and sashimi because it seemed like the quality of the fish here would be good, based on the reviews. I was definitely not disappointed! There are some special sushi rolls listed around the store, so be sure to look around or ask for specials that aren't on the menu. I personally like the regular sushi or sashimi over the special rolls. I had the Jorge roll and my friend got a roll that was entirely deep fried. Both were just okay. I was surprised when the server gave us free sushi and mochi ice cream! Pretty sure everyone in the restaurant at the time got free sushi. Everything was really good. My third time coming here and I'm never disappointed at all. Cute little spot that's perfect for dates and even small get togethers with friends. Upon getting your order they offer you miso soup and salad with a choice of sesame, ginger or house dressing that's the perfect serving size to have you not feeling full. I always happen to order the same thing every time I come here which is the spicy salmon roll, dragon roll, and spicy crispy crunch (which I highly recommend). All 3 roll are very delicious and the quality of the fish taste very fresh. Complimentary appetizers and sushi rolls are given to each table which is a plus. So I was looking for another lunch spot since one of my favorite places to frequent closed. Looking at reviews for the area and being in the mood for something out of the my norm, I found Kim's Sushi. After reading the reviews I figured it was worth a shot being that they were all fairly positive besides one haughty one. When I got there the I didn't realize the place was small. I read that it had only a few tables, 6 to be exact but I figure it was more of a hyperbole, I was wrong. But that didn't detract from the place at all. The girl who greeted me was very friendly. She gave me the pick of the seating as I was the first person in there for lunch. As for the sushi, they had a special a tuna roll and Salmon Roll for 7.50 with soup and salad. I have to say that this is a deal. I ended up paying under 8 dollars for lunch before tip with that and some tea. The sushi itself was very good. I couldn't really complain, it was good by my standards, as well as fresh. The chef did give me two massive a la cart pieces that were both generous in gesture and portion size. Overall, even without the free pieces I would 100% come back here. The sushi is good, the staff is friendly and the atmosphere is rather nice. read more
