I ordered from their website so they wouldn't be stuck with extra fees and I paid dearly because any real delivery site would have dropped the hammer on this garbage behavior. 2 hours, 2 HOURS and I had to call to ask them where the order was. They asked me to wait 10 more minutes. 15 minutes later the driver sent me a picture of the food delivered to the wrong house. I called the restaurant, no remorse, no apologies. I said I have little kids that were waiting for hours to eat dinner and their response? Ok we'll throw it out. I hope I'm not the only customer you're going to lose because of this. Wasabi is a sushi restaurant in West Orange. The restaurant is small because it did a huge amount of take out during the pandemic so it reconfigured the space to have a larger foyer and fewer seats. If you eat in, you'll notice they still do a huge takeout business. I've used them for take-out and delivery, but eating is better. So, consider getting a reservation. You won't be disappointed. The sushi is as good as many of those that are highly on the various "best sushi lists". It is very good sushi. Plus the prices are moderate. And the presentation is attractive with flowers and small little bird statues on tiny baskets. A few real standouts: the Tuna Mango Tartar topped with a quail egg, which was fresh, light and tasty was actually the best I've ever had and I always order it. The miso soup, which comes with dinner, was light and flavorful. Even the tea was unusually good. The raw sushi dishes are very good, well presented and fresh. I have ordered from here many times and never left a review because the food was so appealing that I simply forgot. This time was different, which is why I am keeping it fair and scoring the way I am. I ordered shumai their Japanese dumplings with shrimp, Wasabi R which has tuna, salmon, yellowtail, and avocado inside and outside with 3 different tobiko. I also got the sashimi dinner (15 Pieces of assorted fish, with miso soup). The dumplings were nicely cooked and good. The sashimi was fresh with an assortment of various pieces of raw fish. I highly recommend it. The Wasabi R is where things got weird for me. The tobiko lacked taste, I guess it is for aesthetics more than anything. It was a very average roll. I would not order it again. They are always fast delivering so no points lost there. This time I was not blown away. I am assuming it was an off night. I normally order from here, when I can't get up the hill to Kim's. Half the pieces would open up from being picked up or the rice would fall off the seaweed. But we did appreciate the ratio to rice to filling. They gave us a salad with our order which was nice. This is based on my take out experience. I will come back to dine inside so May 5 stars is in their future. I ordered take out and came to the restaurant to order. During my wait for the food I was able to make some observations. Nice street side set up for outside dining. They are very clean and prepared for COVID as best they can. All the staff were wearing masks, the tables appeared socially distant, inside they have nice decor and lighting including lighting in the menus. Nice touch! They have a Buddha that greats you as you walk past the bar into the dining room. Further down on the left is a Sushi bar. They appear to have a good selection of food and drinks. The manager/ hostess was extremely accommodating while waiting for my take out order, offering bottled water and a seat on a very comfortable couch. She greeted some regulars by first name and was very cordial. I ordered shrimp with pineapple which was delicious. They gave me edamame on the house which was very nice. I said I was visiting friends who live in New City and said I would take a ride from Brooklyn to eat here because they were so nice. Finally tried this little place and was pleasantly surprised! The tofu teriyaki dinner box was very good and came with lots of extras for a good price. Just vegetarians be mindful that my tofu & veggies came with shrimp shumai and a california roll (imitation crab) which wasn't listed on the menu. I ordered to go and my food was ready pretty fast. Saturday night take out and wanting to try something new this was what was decided on. For one my main concern with take out is that it won't be hot when in make the fairly short trip back home to eat it that wasn't the case here. Everything was sealed tight and good and hot. So with plenty to choose from I picked the the jumbo shrimp meal. They didn't skimp on the shrimp which is a peeve of mine when ordering similar entrees but what went wrong is that it was way waaaay too many onions in it, and they were only cooked a little bit. So it wasn't the worst thing and the sauces that came with the meal were good but it was too oniony for me and at nearly $20 that was quite high. The food itself was good. I spend a lot of time in West Orange and I was pleasantly surprised to see on Yelp that another sushi joint opened up in this town. I always try to support the local businesses here. I've been trying to get to try out Wasabi Sushi and today was the day. I like that it is more intimate and smaller than most other sushi places (it's actually very small). Some places give you free hot tea, some charge three dollars per person for hot tea: here they charge $1 for unlimited hot tea which I think is a good thing. And the tuna/avocado, yellowtail/scallion, tuna/cucumber & avocado/cucumber rolls. All good. The yellowtail roll was a little chewy though. Pros: 1) Good service. 2) They have a very convenient parking lot in the back. I feel that the rolls were reasonably priced for what we received. Cons: The flatscreen TV on the wall looks more like an iPad - maybe they could put a bigger TV on the wall. I also wish they were open a little bit earlier so they could offer lunch delivery a little before 11 am. Also, maybe they should get sugar packets here instead of the little bowl of sugar. Typical make shift sushi. Nothing spectacular from what I've tasted. Nothing on the menu genuinely screamed out to me deliciousness. I got two specialty rolls, Blue crab fantastic roll (Marinated blue crab with chef's spicy creamy sauce, in- side with BBQ eel and avocado) and phoenix roll (Shrimp tempura, cucumber, avocado and lobster salad). Aside from that a tradition shrimp tempura roll. The Phoenix roll was dry, the lobster salad left much to be desired and it just didn't meld together as well as it could have. The blue crab fantastic roll was straight up disappointment. I was excited for this roll based on the description and it let me down. It was not creamy and matter of fact quite bland which for me was really impossible with what was listed as the description. Delivery was a long wait. I really would like to fan stan for this place. Seriously. I miss great sushi, like where i used to get it from in NYC. I have been on the hunt to find a new spot to venture into and order special rolls, apps and what not. I was in heaven, I love scallops and the teriyaki sauce added to it made this dish even more tasteful. I was satisfied. I ordered three different rolls. The first one was volcano roll, this had crab meat on top very flavorful. Second, I had the madness roll, very yummy, salmon on top of the spicy tuna had me wanting to order another. I highly recommend getting these two rolls. However, I was a bit disappointed with the third roll, the Amazing roll. I specifically asked for this roll because it had mango in it. When I got the spicy tuna roll, the mango wasn't inside the roll, but rather laid on top. I don't know if mango are in season or not, but the mango did not taste like mango at all. I wouldn't recommend that roll. The Amazing roll was similar to a simple spicy tuna roll, I was better off ordering a regular roll for half the price. They do have dessert, which wasn't on the menu. They had deep fried ice cream, but ended up ordering the green tea mochi ice cream, my favorite thing in the whole world. That was my favorite item. We order from this place a lot. We discovered it by chance about a year ago and it's been really great food every time. We always order through DoorDash but after speaking to a friend tonight about how much commission is taken from these small businesses I decided to go ahead and call to see if they could deliver themselves. We have two young kids so picking up isn't convenient. They said they usually only deliver locally (West Orange) but since it wasn't busy (4pm), they would do the delivery (we usually order at this time because of the kids' dinner schedule.) Great! We both skip the middle person. Took a little longer than it would on DD but that wasn't a problem. The other thing I need to mention is they're pretty honest. I somehow managed to give an extra $100 meaning $120 tip instead of $20 (food was $85). I didn't realise until after dinner. We usually order $150+ of food so it didn't feel too expensive giving $200+. But as I was clearing dishes I realised I didn't order as much this time and mentally went through the math. I called the restaurant and they checked with the driver and indeed I had given her extra. I was told the driver would bring it back after her next delivery but since it was my mistake I didn't want her coming back out. This place is our go-to spot to get delivery from for sushi. My husband always finds ordering delivery sushi weird (I dont) - and because we both love it and are lazy, delivery became a sure thing. We've ordered from Wasabi a few times, and every time, the rolls are tightly prepared, the sushi is fresh, and only one piece out of everything I've eaten had a bit of stringy sinew - which, you know is really difficult to avoid when you're dealing with tons of fresh fish. I'm pretty sure my kitchen may be bigger than this entire restaurant but I can tell you without question that the sushi, sashimi and other Japanese favorites they are making here are way better than anything you will ever get from me! Given the almost steady stream of 5-star reviews recently, I had to give this new place a shot. When I say it's small, I can't stress that enough. There are like 5 or 6 tables, total. It doesn't offer much by way of ambiance either, so I'm thinking this place is going to focus on take-out business (which is what I did). The order was prepared quickly (in about 15 mins), the staff were very friendly and the pricing was competitive. We got an order of shumai, the kani salad, sushi/sashimi combo (comes with miso soup) and an extra miso soup. The shumai and soup were standard but the kani salad was very good. Generous portion of crab and very finely julienned cucumber strips which blended perfectly with the crab strands. The combo dinner came with 15 pieces consisting of salmon, tuna, yellowtail and either flounder or bass (not sure). The sashimi pieces were huge and all of the fish was very fresh, clean and prepared/presented nicely. I mistakenly thought the combo also came with a roll, so I will make sure to try some of those next time. The total came to $34 for all of that. I really wish I lived within their delivery zone, but the 15 min drive is worth it for the quality of fish they're pumping out here, not to mention the good value. I'm not completely abandoning my local spots in favor of this place just yet, but other local sushi purveyors should consider themselves on notice. Love this place! I always order from them and, with being able to have them deliver, it has only enabled my sushi addiction. This place is definitely the number 1 spot in West Orange for sushi. The Jade Roll has to be my top favorite! All their rolls are good though - it's definitely worth a try, you won't be disappointed! The restaurant that was here before Wasabi was one of my favorite places to grab a bite. Well, they must have left some magic in the kitchen because, WOW!! I ordered the Wasabi lunch special which included two rolls and miso soup. I'm not a fan of miso, but they swapped it out for a salad with ginger dressing.
