This restaurant was amazing, I came here with my friends to celebrate my birthday a couple of weeks ago. The food was incredibly good and the service was on par with the food. We ordered a bulgogi set, two sushi rolls from Kim's special rolls. The rolls were delightful. I can't remember the exact name of the rolls but I think they were the French kiss roll and the Elizabeth roll. We also ordered a seafood scallion pancake, chicken & mushroom dumplings, and salmon with jalapeños as our appetizers. Before we started with the appetizers, each of us had miso soup and salad. The ambiance was lovely, and quite crowded on a Friday night dinner time. The atmosphere felt vibrant. The restaurant was so nice and gave us one order of free sushi to try on the house. The drinks were great too. I ordered myself a Moshi sparkling drink and my best friend tried a Juice drink that she enjoyed and raved about. I had a lovely lunch at ILPOOM with my husband on Thursday. This was our first time here - even though we've driven past the eatery countless times. The restaurant is beautifully designed and decorated. I love all the flower walls. We sat at the table underneath the hanging flower ceiling installation, which was so pretty. There is also outdoor seating when the weather allows. If you're a fan of Kim's Sushi, you will enjoy the food here - same top quality and attention to balance and flavor. Yikes - I never thought I'd leave a bad review for anything associated with Kim's. Unfortunately, it was extremely apparent how much of a rush everyone was in last night. From the wait staff to the bus staff, everyone was running around like crazy. The table next to us, I heard them ask for the manager because they messed up an order with an allergy associated with it. Not good. First things first.. we got out miso soup and my bowl had rice stuck to it on the outside. I thought it was weird but I brushed it off because it was just on the outside. House salad was fine. But one of the women bussing tables tried to bring us a second salad because they were clearly overworked and overly busy. I am currently disgusted because I got to the end of my drink and there was the same old rice at the bottom of my cup as there was on the outside of the miso soup bowl. The sushi was fine. I think it's becoming more noticeable that they drench their rolls in sauce to possibly hide the quality of the fish. I'm not saying it was fishy at all, but wow the sauce is so overwhelming. I got the Elizabeth roll and I had one piece - it had too much sauce so I took some off the top and thought it would fix it. Nope. The entire inside of the roll was so unpleasantly soft and tasted like sauce and mayo.. I am still nauseated thinking about that bite. I didn't taste any piece of fish. I am so so disappointed. The seafood pancake had very long strands of squid which were hard to chew through. Another time that I ordered the seafood pancake. Everything was chopped up in small bites and it was a much more pleasant experience. Lastly.. they bussed our table and left our half eaten food on the floor next to us because I guess they were so busy they forgot about it. It was very chaotic in there last night. What a fantastic restaurant! This was our second time here and it was just as good as the first time. We were seated immediately and the service is always nice and attentive. The ambiance is pleasant. Background music is t too loud and the space is clean. Now, the most important part, the food: 1) Beef dumplings (fried). You get six. Perfectly crispy on the outside and the dumpling filling was savory and beefy. I could eat two or three helpings of it if I wasn't here for dinner. 10/10. 2) Seafood scallion pancakes. I'm not usually. A fan of them but my GF loves them. I tried them and ended up eating half of them. Each piece seemed to have one or two shrimp in them. 9/10. 3) My GF got the Spicy Crispy Crunchy roll. She gave it a 9/10. 4) Bulgogi. Delicious. I visited for lunch today with my mom and it was such a pleasent dining experience. In short, the sizzling hot bowl, flavorful sauces, attentive service, and little extras like the orange slices made this an exceptional lunch. But to say more... from the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the flowery decor with East Asian touches.. feels upscale without being pretentious. The chef behind the counter greets everyone walking in and the staff are so polite, so it is very welcoming. And the music was so happy I just felt like dancing. I ordered the beef bulgogi special served in a sizzling hot bowl, that came with a lightly cooked egg on top, but it was able to cook more to my preference as I mixed it in. Side sauces were a tangy red paste, and the other a more liquidy brown sauce with a sweet and tangy profile. Both added an amazing complexity to the savory beef and vegetables. We requested a flight of dressings to try with the side salad. At the end of the meal, they brought out complimentary orange slices, which were refreshingly sweet and the perfect way to cleanse the palate. HIGHLY recommend. Everything was perfect. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the fusion of modern and East Asian decor. The hostess and server were very friendly and kind; our server was able to answer all of our questions as we were deciding what to order. I ordered the Kim's Special Roll and Rainbow Roll, and my boyfriend ordered the Minh Dazzling Roll and Spicy Crazy Eel Roll. The Kim's Special Roll was DELICIOUS (my favorite roll of this visit). The pieces of salmon, tuna, and white fish tasted so fresh; and the amount of spicy mayo was just right (not too overpowering). The Rainbow Roll and Minh Dazzling Roll were also excellent. The Spicy Crazy Eel Roll was my boyfriend's favorite roll. Even though the name indicated that it was spicy, we didn't taste any spice. But it still tasted good! We had never had a warm sushi roll before, and we were pleasantly surprised. Our server gave us a crispy rice and tuna dish on the house, which was SO yummy. This was my second favorite dish of our dinner. She also gave us orange slices for dinner, which were thoughtfully sliced into bite-sized pieces. I've been here four times, and each time it's a little worse. The portions, Japanese and Korean, have been getting smaller. The salad and miso soup are very fresh and tasty but smaller than they were the first time we went. Even the napkins are smaller! The food's overall very good. It's not the best sushi or Korean dishes you can get in NJ, and pricey, but certainly worthwhile. What's interesting is the Korean dishes. There aren't many Korean restaurants in the area and the dishes offered are quite good. Service is usually good but sometimes just has gaps when busy. We've been seated and waited for menus while others are seated, got menus and are starting on appetizers. Plus it is a very attractive restaurant although quite noisy when busy. We have been Kim's loyal customers since Kim's original location in Lincoln Park. When we heard they are opening a new upscale restaurant we had to try it. First I have to say, they are really really good people who make really good food and they know how to take care of their customers. The original location also sold fish. They use top quality fish for their sushi and sashimi. Their sushi is well thought out and you cannot get the Kim's taste anywhere else. Now they look even prettier and fancier. I am still thinking about the toro sushi. Now they also serve authentic Korean food. The menu is extensive and there's something for everyone. Every dish was amazing. Absolutely delicious, fresh tasting and quality sushi. We visited on a random Monday night at 6:30 PM and were pleasantly surprised at how many customers were there. We had sushi and sashimi platters, with soup, salad, softshell crab tempura, galbi, and their hotteok ice cream dessert. I can honestly say everything was delicious, especially their sushi. It is not easy to find quality sushi in this area. The service was also excellent and attentive and they give complementary hot barley tea. We started with some miso soup, salmon tartare, then had their French Kiss and Elizabeth Rolls. Next up was in my opinion a the star dish...the short rib on the bone platter with piping hot vegetables which came with some sides ranging from mild, medium to hot in spice. We finished off with their glass noodle dish also with short rib and capped it off with their typical perfectly sliced orange. The brown rice hot tea was perfect and their service was awesome. The décor is vibrant, though the tables are pretty tight. Perhaps it's my own nostalgia, but it still feels like I'm going back to a Friendly's. We brought some wine with us and informed our server. She told us she'd bring us some glasses. 5-10 minutes later, no glasses. We were told they'd be right over. 5-10 minutes later, we were asked if we were ready to order. We were still waiting on the glasses. A couple of reminders and they arrived. Our server was absolutely on point when it came to our order. She managed dietary constraints and questions marvelously. The sushi is fresh. Just like Kim's they bring you a complementary item of their choosing for you to try. We were served Jabchae, which I actually preferred to the sushi itself. I found the dessert selection a bit odd as it was basically a selection of mochi and ice cream. I decided to skip it. To be honest, I'd rather do take out from Kim's or my usual local spot. Had a very pleasant time at Ilpoom this Sunday evening! The service was good, and the seating is comfortable although a tiny bit crowded. Appetizers were good, tuna tartare was amazing and I enjoyed every bit of it. The squid carpaccio could have used a little bit more flavor. The sushi rolls were excellent, and the donkatsu was delicious as well. The side dishes (kimchi, tofu, radishes, bean sprouts) that came with the donkatsu were good, except the bean sprouts which needed a lot more flavor. We came here for a couples dinner on Friday. Make sure to make reservations in advance- this place was hopping! We were seated within 10 mins of our reservation time. They brought water and wine glasses (it's BYOB) - but no one offered an ice bucket for our white wine. We ordered a few appetizers and took another moment to secure the sushi order. We started with the truffled edamame and the beef gyoza. The truffle edamame was the absolute banger hit - I had never had that seasoning on it and it was lip-smacking. We ended up with four special rolls and a sushi-sashimi combo to all split. I think the Elizabeth Room or the sweet and hot roll were the winners there, but the one with the yellowtail jalepeno was also awesome. We toyed with ending our meal, but ended up going for the bulgogi entree to split. It was also quite delicious - not a morsel was left. Overall - We're huge Kim's sushi fans and this place, while a bit more upscale and pricey, left absolutely no disappointment. Big fan of Kim's Sushi, but ILPOOM is missing the beat when it comes to service. I had a reservation for 6:45 PM. I ran into some traffic and called them beforehand to make note of my slight delay. They made it seem like it was perfectly fine, but once I walked in, I was informed my table was given away to walk ins because of their 15-minute policy.........it was 6:56 PM (lol) and when I pointed that out, both hosts simply spoke to each other in their native language and completely omitted their error. Nonetheless, didn't make a huge stink about their ill advised policy enforcement and waited. Finally got seated and it took a while to even get waters or two glasses for our wine. Once the food came out, it was the only saving grace considering it's exactly the same quality one comes to expect if you've visited Kim's Sushi. Conclusion? Just go to Kim's. Kim's Sushi is legendary in this area for having amazing food in what can generously be called a dive. Decor is framed sticky pads with customer comments in them and not a whole lot more. But as I always say, it's the food damn it and in that area they deliver the goods. Needless to say when the sign was posted outside what used to be Cafe 88 stating a new Kim's iteration was coming soon to Livingston, I was thrilled. Now, the coming soon part was grossly overstated. The sign sat there for the better part of 2 years and I just figured that the project had fizzled. Then on a trip to Kim's I was told that they were scheduled to open last May. May came and went and still nothing. Then sometime in September things started to happen. A sign, some topiary and work trucks started to appear. And finally, last week I was able to take them for a spin. This IS NOT Kim's. It's way way more upscale although that bar was set fairly low. Food and decor are wonderful. There are silk flowers everywhere and, while it retains a lot of the physical flavor of Cafe 88, they've updated it nicely. But again, it's the food only here you get decor and outstanding service as well. Combine that with the Kim's tradition of giving you something free to eat to show their appreciation, and folks you have a winner. read more
