Somehow I like a bit more flavors in my curries, but the Red Currie was quite good, with nice fresh looking and tasting vegetables, and only a little bit spicy. The Yellow Curry is even less spicy, but with a nice sweet flavor. The chicken in the curry was good, and the pork also good with none of the gristle you get in low price Asian restaurants. Cream Cheese Cranberry Wontons were excellent, with a very flavorful and chunky sweet and sour sauce. I think I like my cranberry blended into the cream cheese instead of few whole, dried cranberries added into the cream cheese, but that's just personal preference. Decore is very nice, and location fantastic, you can watch all the people streaming into the Guthrie. read more

The best thing about this place was the attentive host when we walked in here. We came to eat before a show at the Guthrie. They did a great job of making sure we were done in enough time. We ordered the spring rolls with shrimp, fried tofu, side salad, pad sa eew with chicken and the second soup on the list with tofu. The soup came out with chicken. The pad saw eew had the fake wide rice noodles but the flavor was good. Fried tofu was uneventful, spring roll sauce was super spicy. Lychee mandarin orange sangria was a bust. My water was kept filled so that another bonus. Overall people were nice and food was nothing to write home about. Would go back to try the curry if I needed a fast option before the show but besides that I think I'm good with my one dining experience. read more

I like this place a lot. You'll get pretty satisfying Thai food that's just a little bit adventurous. I came in to have dinner before seeing a show at the Guthrie, and even though they were very busy, they found a way to seat me and get me in and out in plenty of time to catch my show. My server was very nice and very professional. I ordered spring rolls and Penang Curry. The spring rolls were pretty good; they slice them in a way that makes them look unique and cool on the plate, but then dipping them in the sauce is kinda tricky. But that sauce is awesome! Not much meat in the spring rolls, though, even though I paid a teeny bit extra for shrimp. But then there's that fantastic curry. Good sauce, not very spicy despite the ominous multi-pepper icon on the menu. And the beef is just amazing. So tender and tasty. So, yeah, this is an awesome Thai place that I'm always happy to have chosen for dinner. Another great pre-Guthrie option! read more

I am a big fan of Kindee. My colleagues and I enjoy lunch at this Thai food restaurant every so often. It is also perfectly positioned kitty korner from the Guthrie Theater, so it's also a convenient place to go before a show afternoon or evening. One of my favorite dishes is the drunken noodles. This is one of the spicy dishes so it is not for the faint of heart or shall we say tame Minnesota pallets. However, you can ask them to tone down the heat. They offer a lunch menu and they are very flexible in subbing out protein or other dislikes. E.g. Since I rarely buy tofu at home, I like to sub out chicken for tofu instead. This is a small place and can fill up quickly. They do take reservations via OpenTable. During the summer when it's not super hot, sitting outside is a nice alternative. No umbrellas, but that's because the majority of the time the building(s) shad the area. read more

This was a very yummy restaurant with vegan options for my sister! The service was impeccable and food delicious! We were very happy with our dinner selection. There was adequate parking around the restaurant, however it is meter parking. Once we arrived we were promptly seated any given menus and water. The waitress was quick and very friendly! The food was even better. My sister had the pad tai and I have the cashew chicken dish! The peanut sauce used was incredible! The restaurant is small but quaint and cute. The atmosphere of this place is good. It's clean, the waitress was nice and prompt, the beers weren't bad priced. Sadly that's the only good of this place. The food was mediocre at best. I got the tom kha (tom yum but with coconut milk) with fish. It was smaller than I thought. The soup was way too sweet almost to a nauseous point. The mushroom and fish was good but barely any fish. My friend got tom yum soup and it was extremely acidic. His fried pork belly was extremely salty. The son in law egg was good. It was sweet, crispy, and not too salty. My other friends got curry. There was supposed to be lychee in it but there was none. They also barely give you any rice. Overall I'm not happy with the place and am surprised it has 4 stars on Google and 3 on yelp. This may be the only Thai restaurant in town with Thai yellow curry. I'm not saying yellow is the best curry but it is my favorite, so glad to find it. Takeout was exactly on time, so the food was super fresh. The masked person who packages and hands food is kind, efficient and double checks the orders. My Mom and I tried this restaurant upon receiving several recommendations before attending play at the Guthrie. It was awesome! I had the ginger stir fry with chicken (and I added on the fried rice) and it was SO GOOD that my Mom stole the remainder of it :) My Mom had the peppercorn steak with brown rice and was a little underwhelmed, but we found out later that they have a spice tray you can ask for. That would have made all the difference! I wish the waitress would have offered that. She also had a side salad with a cilantro vinaigrette that she really enjoyed. I stopped by Kindee Thai while burning a bit of time before the Vikings game. Not very experienced with Thai food, I opted for the safest choice I could find: the Tamarind Wings appetizer. Incredible. There's just enough spice to bring medium heat, and a tangy sweet flavor. The wings were crispy and added a crunch I haven't had in a wing for a log time. Served four wings per plate, it's definitely enough to be a small meal for one, if desired. The staff was friendly and attentive and my casual "sports nut" dress fit in right along with the Guthrie crowd nicely. Second, the place needs a coat of paint. Areas you can see are dirty and worn. Walls are scuffed and bathrooms dirty. Why are paper towels not in paper towel holder? No attention to details. Third, the food. Edamame was served with noodles in the dish. Obviously using the same water for noodles and edamame. Not cool. Plus the edamame tasted fishy. Calamari was over cooked and very modest amount. Not good. Had two curry dishes that were adequate but nothing more. I would recommend you choose another spot. This is one of my favorite Thai places in Minneapolis. Clean, fresh, prepared to order Thai food. The Drunken Noodle is my preference, and it has lots of fresh Thai basil. Delicate, balanced flavor, but as with everything in Minnesota you really have to ask special to get any spicy kick at all. The price to portion is a little out of whack (portions are a touch small) and I really wish they would increase the protein portion of the dishes --- they are definitely skimpy on the protein. read more

I have driven past this location many times and finally took the time to stop in on day during their happy hour. The food was responsibly priced. The food was decent but the service was subpar. I ordered pad Thai however it was lacking peanuts and any peanut sauce so that was a bit disappointing. When we first arrived our waiter was attentive to us, but when he realized we were only ordering small appetizers he began to devote all his attention to guests who were ordering larger amounts. Twice he flat out ignored us when we asked a question. Flavors abound! *The fresh Spring Rolls are too good, The freshness is prefect appetizer *The Pad Se Ew was excellent. Perfectly cooked noodles and loved the sauce. Vegetable were plentiful and crispy. It was balanced perfection *Kanna Moo Krob was also on-point. The pork belly was moist and flavorful. So. I'm a devoted eater, but I'm also an overscheduled student and I don't have enough time to write crowdsourcing reviews. But I just signed up for Yelp so that I could correct the terrible unjustice being done in the other reviews. I have only been to Kindee two or three times, so I can't vouch for the likability of every menu item, but. My experiences there have been universally good. The staff is truly welcoming, friendly, and swift. The entire restaurant has an ambience of class and thoughtfulness that is much more trendy Chicago/Brooklyn than Minneapolis - in a good way. I love my University Ave Thai dives, too. But sometimes I'm not in the mood for plastic plants and Christmas lights. The menu is small for quality control purposes, not due to lack of inventiveness. This is not an especially Americanized restaurant, and so their noodle dishes are not the standard mall-grade soy-doused honey-sweet stuff that Big Bowl & the like have conditioned us to think is tee-riffic. The satay tastes like woodchar. The peanut sauce is chunky. These are good things. The duck curry alone is extraordinary. Savory duck, lush purple grapes, fresh basil, crunchy spirals of deep-fried calamari. Also - great ginger creme brulee. And when was the last time you had a tolerable "fusion" dessert? So spare Kindee the hatin' merely for a brown rice shortfall - they normally do have it for us hippies. read more

Good food, not great food, small portions for big prices. Came here on a Thursday night for dinner as this is one of the only Thai restaurants in the Twin Cities that has Jungle Curry on their menu. It's a curry made without coconut milk, and it's usually my favorite. There was an odd taste in it that I couldn't detect. Almost musty. The other dish we ordered was the vegetable stir fry. (Not sure of the exact title) it was a very small portion. I couldn't believe it. Now their rice is excellent. We ordered brown rice, and it was perfectly cooked and nutty. After we found out Spoonriver was closed for the evening, we reluctantly trodded over to Kindee for drinks. (I say "reluctantly" because my friend forewarned me that the food was "pretty terrible.") We tried to stick to the drink menu, but after our stomachs started grumbling we ordered appetizers. I was pleasantly surprised. I think the chicken satay was better than Chiang Mai's. It was so tender and the peanut sauce and cucumber relish were the perfect accompaniments. I also had a glass of the plum wine--it was sweet, but nicely balanced by the tartness of the plum. I think my bill ended up being around $16 too--not bad at all considering Kindee's location. I was also mesmerized by the bright, multi-colored fans and lanterns from the ceiling. Like Emily, I really wanted to like Kindee Thai. It was lovingly (and expensively) designed and the location is great. The food, however, was anything but great. We started with the Larb lettuce wrap and spring rolls, the former being oddly greasy and tasteless. The rolls were fine, but not amazing. The curries and noodle dishes that followed all tasted strangely flat. I understand that the restaurant is offering a more contemporary take on traditional Thai dishes, but surely this doesn't mean that dishes need to be bland, does it? There was no depth or heat to any of our entree's despite the fact that we ordered all dishes "spicy". I know Minnesotans used to have a reputation for avoiding spicy food, but isn't that really an old paradigm? I think those days are over, and we were totally prepared for lip numbness and loss of sensation! What a disappointment. The service was fine, but the restaurant was nearly empty. At the end of our meal at Kindee Thai, my friend asked a rhetorical but valid question; "Is there something about the Guthrie that attracts mediocre restaurants?" We decided that Sanctuary is probably the only decent restaurant in a five block radius of the new Guthrie. read more

Kindee won me over with its warm modern decor, super efficient and friendly service, and YUMMY food. I tried the Pad Se Ew Noodle with tofu, asked for no sweet soy sauce, and requested for it to be made spicy - it came out incredibly delicious. Rice noodles with Chinese greens and eggs and tofu...never encountered this item on a menu before. And the prices are very reasonable for the restaurant's location right next to Guthrie. I can't wait to try their teas and other items on the menu. read more

Terrible service and awful food. I realize this could be an off day experience but thats all its going to be! I ordered basil chicken w brown rice...the waiter took forever to come by - barely said anything, then when the dish came the chicken was a nasty white color basically looked undercooked, the basil was crammed under the chicken all soggy and the brown rice was...well it was just there. I mean yeah pretty bad never going back again. That dish was $11. I wouldve much rather spent twice as much and eaten at Spooneiver across the street!! (so yum!) So I'd stay away. I really like the food here and in warmer weather we like to eat outside so we can bring our dog. Service is sometimes painfully slow, but always polite. Not impressed. Chicken dish has large pieces of chicken breast with no flavor. I added chili to all of my dishes. There was really nothing inspiring or memorable about the food. Seating was tight so I had to listen to the crazy cat lady sitting next to me through the whole meal compare her animals to real people. There are many appetizer options that hover around $5, with entrees in the $10-$16 range. We chose this over the much pricier Spoonriver and I'm glad we did. Our table of 3 enjoyed an order of pad thai, fresh shrimp spring rolls (these are huge), green curry chicken & eggplant w/ brown rice and a bottle of wine for $20 each. I love good Thai food. Having lived in several larger cities, I've had my fair share in both high end and more casual Thai places. I want to believe that the Twin Cities food scene has more than just good Italian, French, and American food, sprinkled with a few good Japanese places. Kindee Thai does not prove me wrong. I've eaten at Sawatdee (meh) and at Amazing Thailand (good), so my husband and I were excited to try Kindee. He ordered the red curry with chicken. I ordered the Tom Yum soup with chicken and pad see ew with chicken. This was ordered as a takeout order, so I can't speak to the ambiance or service in the restaurant. The red curry looked like yellow curry. It was more a bamboo curry rather than a curry with chicken. My husband thought it was monotone, with surprisingly few vegetables (other than bamboo), and a sprinkling of chicken. The Tom Yum soup was so salty, it was inedible. I tried to dilute it with one part water - still too salty. The random white button mushrooms and two cherry tomatoes just made the soup more disappointing. My pad see ew was edible but still disappointing. The flavors were one note, and it was like a suggestion of what good pad see ew tastes like - but the actual dish was a 2 out of a 5. At least there was a significant amount of chicken in my dish. The best thing was the Thai iced tea. Granted, I had to dilute it with almost a full cup of milk (otherwise I'd be awake until 3 am), but the flavors were there. The prices are decent for a restaurant in the Mill District, but I would prefer paying more money for actual Thai food that tastes delicious. We won't be ordering from these guys again. read more

My husband and I both lived in Thailand. Between us we have ten years of experience in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. I'm a fairly decent cook so I have some sense of cooking. We both love Thai cuisine. Needless to say, we'd become discouraged about finding a good Thai restaurant in Minnesota. Why, oh why, did we wait so long to visit Kindee Thai? We had lunch there today and can only say that this restaurant reminds us of our favorite classical Thai restaurant in Bangkok off of Sathorn Road. The best Thai food is subtle. (I fear that sometimes people think that Thai food just needs to be hot, hot, hot. It doesn't. Some dishes have heat, of course, but if the dish is overpoweringly hot, be suspicious because the cook is possibly covering up a lack of skill.) The Penang Curry at Kindee Thai was the equal of any served in a fine Bangkok restaurant. It was fragrant, flavorful, and had the requisite heat but not too much. The meat was tender and the sauce was just wonderful and plentiful. There's an artistry to a curry like this. They took the time to slice the meat thinly enough, too. We loved it. We also had two appetizers and for the first time in MN we had satay with peanut sauce and the peanut sauce was as it should be. It was light, tasty, and not greasy. It wasn't overpowering and heavy. And we had the little shrimp cakes "tod mun goong" with another light sauce. Very nice and deftly done. We had other dishes and I won't go on, but if you want the best of authentic Thai cooking, visit this restaurant. I have to say that I am very disappointed...that I didn't eat here sooner! Once again, this place is nestled in my work neighborhood. The menu is super simple, which I value over competitor Sawatdee's super packed menu. The food is super fresh, and doesn't get much fresher than the awesome fresh spring roll I consumed. Personally, I don't think that the prices are too steep. This really isn't a bash towards Sawatdee but I am definatley a huge fan of the vibe this place puts out. For being so close to the Guthrie I assummed this restaurant would have prices similar to Sea Change or Spoonriver but I was wrong! The entrees were arond $10-$16 and were delicious!
