Craved a cheesy sandwich, so I stopped by West Coast Cheesesteak for lunch--and thanks to their SGV…read morePassport deal, it ended up covering dinner and even breakfast the next day too. Their tater tots alone are practically a meal. They're crispy on the outside, fluffy inside, and well-seasoned without being overly salty. They're great with ketchup, but I like mixing half of them with my homemade lemon pepper seasoning, which takes them to another level. The cheesesteaks are generously portioned and packed with tender, buttery beef smothered in plenty of melted cheese. Every bite is rich, savory, and satisfying, making this the perfect spot whenever you're craving a hearty, cheesy sandwich.

Their menu is very limited but honestly, quality over quantity. Based off the reviews and photos that I saw on Yelp, I decided to get the 'West Coast Cheesesteak' in a large to share between two people. They let you choose what cheese you want and the reviews said that the cheddar cheese sauce was amazing. Honestly, I wish I stuck with what I like and got the provolone. The cheddar cheese sauce wasn't my cup of tea but the two people that I shared it with said it was really good. I did also wish that the bread was more toasted and the entire cheesesteak had more texture to it. The bell peppers added a nice spice to each bite and was honestly my favorite thing about the sandwich. It was also $20 for one cheesesteak.

But nooooo. Mr. B can smell sinfully yummy calories, even with a bag over his head, a mile away. Their specialty... chocolate croissants. Thus, we let Artisanal Goods lure us in. No parking, way too busy, way too full to seat us, a line bursting out the door, the tiny bakery cafe still seduced us. That is, Mr B circled the block in the car but pushed me out to get in line. It was the idea of a flaky, buttery, chocolate croissant crumbling all over his shirt that made him do it. And I had no intention of saying no. The line went quickly. The last Kouign Amann had just escaped my clutches to the guy in front of me, darn it. But there were still trays upon trays of freshly baked, massive chocolate croissants displayed in their custom, wood display case right next to the register. Sorry about no pictures, but you know how things get out of hand sometimes. However if you want to experience an orgasm in pastry form, I suggest you high tail it here.

Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like I was inconveniencing them just by ordering. A friendly attitude goes a long way, and that was completely missing. The coffee was even more disappointing. It had almost no flavor and tasted watered down, especially for the price. I expected a quality drink, but it was bland and absolutely not worth what I paid. To make matters worse, we were told to leave the patio an hour before the shop was even closing. If the patio has different hours, that should be clearly communicated instead of asking paying customers to leave early. Overall, this was a frustrating experience. Between the unfriendly service, flavorless coffee, and being asked to leave well before closing, I won't be coming back. There are plenty of other cafés in Pasadena that offer much better coffee and treat their customers with respect.

And they carry Jeni's ice creams, which is fun b/c you can't find those everywhere. Their baked desserts area is solid, I've tried a few of the fresh-baked cookies (sugar, peanut butter, and white choc macadamia; all were good) and if you get them in the morning sometimes if they happen to have been made that morning, the textures and flavors are great, and the prices totally fair. Today I tried the deli for the first time and my goodness - 10/10. I've walked past Howie's many times and smelled something reminiscent of mouth-watering Italian food, and have always been curious. Now I know their cooking tastes as good as it smells! I tried the chicken thighs grilled with black pepper, which were seasoned so well, tender, and not too salty or sweet like many restaurants will do nowadays - it was perfect; plus that distinctive smoky grilled/charred flavor was present thanks to the fact that they literally grill their meats themselves. I also tried one of their sausages - didn't get the name, but it was seasoned beautifully with peppers and all kinds of herbs and spices, and it had a great texture and bite. Prices were pretty good. I'm totally coming back for more of the deli - they really know how to cook there! Lastly, the staff are always pleasant, the store is clean and has a relaxed atmosphere, and there's usually enough parking.
