We were walking around downtown Pasadena after dinner and this place looked so good that even though we were absolutely stuffed, we still went in anyway. We were seated immediately, which was such a nice surprise, and the vibes in here are immaculate. You can actually see them cooking with fire, which makes everything feel extra cozy and a little fancy at the same time. Also, random but important, the bathrooms were beautiful and the soap smelled amazing. Even the water was good with that elite crunchy ice. We only got the banana pudding because we physically could not eat more, but honestly it was so good. I just wish the portion was a little bigger and that there were more crunchy cookie bits for texture because that was my favorite part. We wandered around the attached market afterward, and it was actually so fun to browse. 2nd time here: Greeter with the curly hair is extremely rude. Asked if we could sit in the back and she gave me a death stare and said we only have the sidewalk patio open. Afterwards, didnt even smile or make eye contact when giving menus. Agnes has the elements to be really good, and my overall experience was on the 3.5 level (somewhere between okay and good). The highlight for me was the warm cheddar biscuit. I really enjoyed this with the whipped honey butter. The Agnes cinnamon roll was decent, but not quite gooey enough for me. The food would be good if it was seasoned. I say that because it's very nicely prepared, cooked and presented - but it's bland. The mushroom & leek omelet was beautiful, but it needed salt. It didn't seem like they'd used any at all. The endive citronette that came on the side was nice; I liked the dressing. The crispy tator tots were just fine, nothing special (and also needed a little salt). My friends that got the grits carbonara and the quiche pot pie said their food was also underseasoned. The service was a little lackluster. They were nice, but seemed understaffed. The restaurant itself was nice. It's a large clean space with lots of light, and room between the tables. Bathrooms are decent. For underseasoned food and lackluster service, it feels overpriced. My omelette was $28, and the egg dishes ranged from $22-30. If I had gotten nothing else, my bill plus tax and 20% tip (we had 6 people) would have been about $37 (which is really high for an omelette - I know it was my choice to still order it, but I do think it's worth stating that it's expensive). Of course, I did also get coffee, and some other things to share with the table. But that's part of the fun of brunch with friends! There is limited street parking around, but the De Lacey lot is just down the street and around the corner. I returned for a third time, and we had a good experience. I especially loved the HOT HONEY FRIED CHICKEN | chicken thighs with garlic crunch and honey mustard dipping sauce. I thought it was flavorful, juicy and a bit addictive. The skin was not crispy, it's more saucy. We also loved the charcuterie board - HALF & HALF BOARD | 2 cheese & 2 cured meats with accompaniments. That was the table's favorite dish of the night. It was really fun to eat and dip with all the different components. The MELTED LEEK & SPINACH DIP | Raclette cheese, kool-ranch wontons - this was also pretty delicious: savory and cheesy. We also ordered the SPRING AGNOLOTTI | four cheese blend, grilled asparagus, snap peas, sage. That was different and not bad. All in all, we had a good time and service was good. Alright, so I was a big fan of Agnes and I'm surprised I haven't written a review simply on the fact that they have deep-fried cheese curds that rival some authentic Wisconsin spots. But this past weekend I sort of had a bit of a bummer of an experience. I ordered a small cheese platter for my wife and I to pick up for an at-home date night. I added some cheeses we loved when we were there in December - I dropped them in the notes of the order AND sent an email to confirm. When I didn't hear back I tried calling, which went straight to a recording. So, of course when I picked up the platter it wasn't what we wanted. I was told emails aren't answered on the weekend, they don't pick up the phone and they're still working out the system. Thwarted by three modes of communication. Pretty disappointing. And for the $120 price tag, I was a little underwhelmed. I probably would have been better off just buying the cheeses from them, and getting the crackers and the accoutrements somewhere else and assemble it myself at home. I'll probably still eat here because there are some solid dishes, and the back patio is a beautiful spot to bring the family (pup included), but I just won't be ordering a cheese platter again, unfortunately. read more

Came here for a friend's birthday after she kept suggesting it for various get together and it kept getting vetoed lol I actually had it on my list of places to try for a while but eventually took it off said list. Cheese board - were the 3 cheeses delicious? Absolutely. Was the board worth 32 dollars? Absolutely not. I'd say 12 dollars at best. It was crazy small. The raspberry jam served with the board was excellent but we were disappointed to find they didnt sell it in their market. Cornbread eclairs - these were okay. I don't like pate, but I tried it and the flavors worked well together. Someone else in the group thought it was too sweet. Cheese curds - these were good, but it's kind if hard to ruin fried cheese. Very good, very dill-y ranch. Salad - I forget what it was called. Something something Greens. It was fresh, had a good amount of cheese, and the dressing was good. It did get a little boring after a while though. Short rib sliders - this was a special for the evening. It was described as being "like pulled pork but beef and it's short ribs." Both people in our party who ordered it said it was just okay. Came out lukewarm and the horseradish aioli was too strong. Duck ravioli - small portion, but I think she liked it? Potato dumplings - should have listened to many a review that said it was bland, because it was. Radiator pasta - our birthday girl liked it. Overall, my assessment of he restaurant is that the portions are small for the price, especially the cheese board, but service was friendly. I struggled to find something that I was excited to eat here, which is how i ended up with salad, (a rare occurrence for me). When we left, several of us got some cheese from the market. Fromage Excellence - great! Basically like a brie. Nice and creamy. The rind isn't bitter like a brie. I usually haaaaaate the rind, but I was down to eat this one. Tumbleweed - it's okay. We didn't expect it to have a giant mold spot in the middle of it. Overall flavor is nothing special, but it's fine. Reverie - good but again, nothing special. Slightly funky. Etorki - excellent cheese. 10/10 no notes. Friend got Leonora goat cheese and said this: "One of the cheeses I got is unbelievably nasty and vile. Somehow it's like spicy plastic nail polish remover." So. There's that lol. Anyway. Overall, an okay experience. Won't be back for the restaurant but would return for some cheese (which are mostly in the range of 7-14 dollars for a quarter pound). read more

It's been a minute since I've been to Agnes. Their DineLA dinner menu brought me back, as it had several dishes not on the regular menu. Agnes has a DineLA lunch menu as well. Agnes has always been a beautiful restaurant with a barn-like interior with exposed beams and lots of woodwork situated on Green St. in Old Town, in the thick of scores of restaurants. There's a large covered patio in the rear and also a streetside patio still set up. They are open continuously from midday with a weekday lunch, weekend brunch, and every day happy hour and dinner menus. The Cheesery is in the front with a cute cheese shop, cafe tables and a bar. The large open kitchen has a live fire station. I had an early dinner reservation. I recognized the host to be chef/co-owner Thomas Tilaka Kalb, who from a distance is a doppelganger for fellow chef/restauranteur Evan Funke because of their prominent beards. Service throughout the evening was fine, friendly and attentive, almost rushed, which was okay for someone with an eat-and-run attitude like me. This was even though there was a huge party occupying the entire rear patio. I was surprised to see past reviews regarding the service based on my visit. The Agnes DineLA menu consisted of 5 set courses; only one dish was off the regular menu. 1) Cornbread Eclair. The dish on the regular menu that should never be taken off. I've ordered it every time I've been here in the past. It's a rectangle (eclair) of cornbread with chicken liver mousse piped on top, along with some cherries and chives. A perfect starter. 2) Brussels Sprout Caesar. An update of a traditional Caesar, with sprouts instead of Romaine, the addition of grilled grapes, and the anchovies being lightly breaded and fried boquerones, milder than traditional anchovies. 3) Mushroom Stroganoff. I'm not a fan of traditional beef stroganoff; the beef is often made tough in the cooking process and the sour cream often too potent. This version, however, was fab! The meaty but tender mushrooms were a perfect sub for the beef, the sour cream was mild (if used at all), and the housemade mafaldine pasta had the perfect tooth--Evan Funke would be impressed. The addition of the Caravaggio Taleggio cheese took it over the top. I think this dish would do well on the regular menu. 4) Chicken Piccata. Another great dish. The chicken was perfectly breaded and crisp, with the traditional lemon-caper brown butter sauce not too acidic. There was broccolini underneath. 5) Thai Fried Banana Split. A tasty mish-mash. I don't remember the flavours of the 2 ice creams; one may have had matcha? There was a slice of breaded and fried banana, salted caramel, raspberry coulis and whipped cream. They gave me a chocolate chunk cookie as well; it's the dessert on the lunch DineLA menu. I took it home where it was delish with milk. Overall a great dinner. That's why I like DineLA; it can help you remember places you've liked in the past, or help you try someplace new. read more

Snagged a last-minute brunch reservation via OpenTable and opted for patio seating since we had a pup with us. The restaurant is beautiful and the patio is lovely on a sunny day, but we were seated directly under the sun with no shade and it got uncomfortably hot. We started with the Trout Rillette and the Greek Oaks Lettuces. The salad was outstanding, the dressing was incredible and honestly the highlight of the meal. We shared the Mushroom Risotto, Omelet Florentine, and Braided Bacon Benny family-style. The server also suggested the warm cheddar biscuit with whipped honey butter but didn't mention that the Benny already comes on a biscuit, so that felt a bit unnecessary. The food overall was phenomenal but on the richer side, making the salad a perfect palate cleanser. We shared the cinnamon roll for dessert (available on weekends only), which was fine but nothing memorable. At the top of my list to order were their Cornbread Eclairs, and they did not disappoint! An order comes with two, and they had chicken liver mousse, chives, and luxardo cherries. The mousse was creamy and savory with a nice pop of tartness and a little sweet from the cherries. So good! Agnes is a cheesery, so of course we had to get something with cheese! We got the Fried Cheese Curds that come with Kaylin & Kaylin honey mustard pickles and a dilly ranch for dipping. There were a good amount of cheese curds in one order! The Loaded Baked Potato Dumplings were also tasty! They use Prairie Breeze Cheddar, broccoli, sour cream, and bacon. The dish was like gnocchi meets a baked potato. And the dumplings were perfectly pillowy. To break up the richness of the dishes we ordered, we also got the Beets & Pears. These were nicely presented and arranged in a pretty spiral pattern. It came with hazelnut hummus, lime leaf crunch, and tang sauce. This dish was a nice balance of textures and flavors. They offer cheese boards, which I am definitely going to try next time! For 2 people we ordered: - lamb kebab: good taste, well cooked, you get 2 small skewers - beets and pears: with hummus and peanuts, an interesting mix - Potato dumpling aka gnocchi: this was really disappointing given that we ordered it due to all the good reviews we saw about it -- it basically tasted like small plain gnocchi, overcooked bacon, and potato crisps on top of some white sauce. I reviewed Yelp and it looked appealing . we opted to sit at the bar ...the patio was beyond HOT and the dining room had wafts of hot air coming from patio (door was open). it was coolest at the bar. i ordered a glass of Rose. So hubby and I have partaken of this establishment twice. The first time there, he ordered the Radiators in Red Sauce while I had the Seared Hokkaido Scallops. For appetizer and salad, we shared the Cornbread Eclairs and the Babes Farms Lettuces. The latter we loved so much, we ordered it again on a return visit. The second time, he ordered the Fried Chicken and I ordered the Grilled Skirt Steak. The best order for me was the lettuces, the scallops, and the cornbread eclairs. I think it was a good balance of freshness and citrus of the salad with the buttery scallops and the fatty eclairs. The scallops were my favorite and it was well balanced with the leeks, the micro cilantro and the spicy red chilis. The second best dish was the pasta "radiators" with the burrata and fresh pomodoro sauce. He liked the fried chicken but I found the dish too sweet because of the honey, which became a bit too much with the sweet pickles, too. Needed more acid. My grilled skirt steak was too heavy - they called it a crying tiger sauce so I guess they were going for a Thai shaking beef kind of thing. If you're super hungry and that's all you're having, I think it's fine. The ambience is very hipstery, high ceilings, a big open grill that looks fit for a Florentine standing ribeye and a bar that feels welcoming and relaxed. The waitstaff is very attentive; you have one guy taking your drinks order and then another person taking the food order. We were a little disappointed the second time around because hubby really wanted to try the bratwurst instead of the chicken but they were out of it (this was 7pm on a weekend and we had made reservations). They were also out of cheese curds as we heard from the next table. When this happens, it would be a good idea to gather the menus and put sticky notes on them to block out the items they no longer serve that night. Japanese places do it all the time and it's just a small enough thing to do that would matter a lot to a patron. I enjoyed looking at the cheese fridge as well as all the other items they have in the "market" up front by the hostess station. We ordered 2 glasses of wine, Brussel sprouts and a burger with cheese curds to share. The burger originally came with tater tots but we asked to substitute curds for a few dollars more, which our server was able to do! The Brussel sprouts was my favorite of all the dishes, it had a very light but also somewhat spicy flavor, would definitely recommend! Total for all our food including tip was ~$100. Unfortunately we were seated to the right of the entrance which kind of ruined the vibes since there were lots of people coming and going and shopping around near us in their marketplace section. The two of us ordered: - Corn bread eclairs (4.5/5): Our favorite dish of the night. The berry cuts through the heavy creamy flavors well, but the corn bread was a bit drier than we prefer. Despite that it was a flavorful and balanced - not too organy which can be an issue with liver in general. The eclair comes as a pair so it's a perfect choice for sharing on a date night! - Cheese board (2/5): While tasty, there was nothing really special about this dish - and the steep price, especially for the size of the board, honestly felt sort of ridiculous. It doesn't seem like it could be shared by more than 3 people at most, as it only comes with 3 types of cheeses, some crackers, grapes, dried fruits, corn nuts, and jam, at less than generous portions. Cheeses included in our spread included a brie fermier, campo de montalban (a blend of cow, goat, and sheep milk), and rispens (sheep milk). I found the last one just sheep milk too stinky but the other two were good, jam included was good, crackers nice and sturdy, wish more fresh fruits were included instead of dried fruit, nice corn nuts. We'd recommend skipping this one as we've had bigger cheese boards with meats at half the price. - Pear and beet salad (3/5): Had lots of flavors and textures going on but I didn't love it, mainly because the hazelnut hummus tasted way too florally. My bf on the other hand found the salad refreshing but not very impressionable. - Potato Dumplings with shoestring potatoes on top (2/5): Sadly another disappointing dish. It was way too sour cream forward making it super sour and strange - almost like a baked potato with nothing to balance it. The sauce was also pretty watery but the dumplings themselves had a good texture and wasn't as heavy / creamy as expected. However for 28 dollars we felt pretty disappointed. read more

I really enjoyed my experience at Agnes. The host and servers were very accommodating and friendly. They allowed our large party to move to an outside table with more space without any issues. Since we had a large group we were able to try most of everything on the menu. There was not one bad thing had at all! Agnes used to be one of my favorite restaurants in Pasadena but I have been so disappointed with my recent visit. I have ordered freshly sliced chorizo from the deli over the years and this time I have no idea what they gave me. They are either not chorizo at all or they were stale. They smelled rancid and they were pale red instead of dark red. You can see the discoloration throughout each piece. It is not only a reflection on the restaurant but also on the training of the staff. How do you not realize the meat is not up to par as you are slicing through it?! The thing that ultimately will keep me from coming back here ever again was being presented with their tipping structure of a minimum of 20% and up to I believe 30%, not just on the food you must order at the counter, but also on RETAIL ITEMS purchased separately. I don't know if it's the business themselves that have it set up like that, or the cashier working at the front. There should never be a tipping apparatus set up for retail items. It's extremely scammy, unprofessional and in plain poor taste. By the time my boyfriend realized what had happened (that he had just automatically clicked through it out of being used to just signing off) it was too late and he's not the type to raise a fuss over anything. Really cute restaurant in Pasadena. Portions are a little on the smaller side. Fried chicken was a standout and the cheese plate was delicious. One thing that bothered me was the waiters would clear our plates without asking and there was still food on them. I love that the options are sharable since I don't eat too much but I wanted to try a lot of different things on the menu. We had the salad, the chicken liver eclairs and the potato dumplings. I'm not a liver girly, but the other two dishes were delish! I also had the matcha lemonade which was sooooo good! Bathrooms are gender neutral, but were surprisingly clean! Had an amazing experience at Agnes recently. 5 stars for the presentation and taste of the food, 4 stars for the price since it is on the slightly higher side. What I loved the most though was the service and ambiance. They really make you feel welcome and it's not at all snobby which I really appreciate. If you come here, try the cheese board with a $3 upgrade to the baguette since it's so warm and freshly baked. They also added a really nice touch for an early birthday celebration by giving us a card signed by their employees and a free sorbet dessert! The rose wine I got was amazing at only $10/glass. This is a time I wish I could give a place 4.5 stars. It seems nowadays that most places just try to have Instagramable food, but the flavor gets lost along the way. Not at Agnes. The food is both aesthetically stunning and absolutely delicious. It's a nice open restaurant that has high ceilings and is very inviting. They have a little shop in the front where you can buy cheese, chocolate, spreads, and lots of tinned fish. I met my brother and SIL for my SIL's birthday. We ordered the 3 cheeseboard. The spread was great. Thankfully all 3 of us liked a different cheese the most, but all were delicious. They give you 3 district cheeses with in-season pairings. Our board came with dried apricots, dried pairs, red grapes, and what I will call "bougie corn nuts". We ordered ours with a baguette and honestly I can't imagine it with just the crackers. My brother and SIL got bloody Mary's which they said were great, with a good kick. They shared the grits carbonara and the chicken parm sandwich. That was a lottttt of food with the cheese board. But they said both were spectacular dishes. I had a new dish, the trout Crudo with a beet spread and salmon roe. It was described as lox and bagels adjacent which I definitely understand, but the fish taste was a little understated for me. I mostly just tasted the beet spread with a little dill now and then. But I loved it. I really like the earthy beet flavor. And it was the perfect amount of food for me. I would definitely order this again. The service was prompt, a man kept changing our water out to make sure we didn't run out. The women behind the cheese counter were very friendly and eager to help. It's a great restaurant! The patio ambiance mixed with brunch-y vibes made Agnes such a perfect spot for a girls lunch!! We walked right in and waited only a few minutes for our table. Prompt service was such a treat on a Saturday lunch rush. The staff was so accommodating and helped get us a table right away. The rain slowed the wait down a bit but they sure enough got us a wonderful spot on their patio perfectly shaded. We did a table of shareables and for a party of 4 that was the best idea! Ordered a little bit of everything from their tater tots, to the eggs benny, to the crème brûlée toast and finished with grilled cheese and tomato soup. My favorite was the Omelet Florentine. Perfectly adorable presentation for each dish and plate including a charcuterie delight as a starter. For it being in pasadena it's very walkable from parking lots and tons of shops including a park. The perfect place for afternoon strolls especially since they have a little market inside. Complete with wine, crackers and cheese delights. Watch them cut cheese fresh and grab a special occasion card for the perfect dinner guest gifts. Wonderful place for stop by's but also so fun for a girls afternoon. This place is super cute!! There is a little shop in the front when you walk in and a bar. Then there is seating for the restaurant as you walk back. We had a reservation but they unfortunately took a while to seat us. Once we were seated though we had a great waitress who was funny and helped us pick our food. We got the charcuterie board for 4 of us to split and it was delicious! The meat and cheese was a perfect pairing for the red wine we got . We also got the pasta to share and I highly recommend that! I would definitely come back . Also parking is mainly street but there are lots nearby about a few dollars per 2 hrs. read more

Joined them for their Saturday Brunch Menu! Food was tasty but especially loved the Hot Dish. The Pink Lady was refreshing and their lattes were favorable! Loved the interior decor and their outdoor seating area. I wish I had gotten photos of the interior, as we loved the vibe! Their chocolate cookies that they sell at the counter were amazing! I've been here enough times that I'm surprised this is my first review. Great spot that prides itself on their cheese, but with an excellent restaurant, wine selection, and even a little bakery. I love Agnes. We had Mother's Day brunch here and it was quite lovely - the waitstaff, the ambiance, the food- 10 out of 10. You absolutely must order something from the cheesery. It is a cheese shop after all. The half and half board ($42) is always a good call. It comes with 2 cheeses, 2 cured meats, and plenty of accompaniments. The cheese is carefully curated each day (I think). The selection is generally mild and caters to a wide audience, in fact, you can purchase any of the cheeses out front should you fall in love with one. Really nice takeaway situation. I've had a really good pimento cheese omelette here before, but menus change. I ordered the T.A.B.-wich ($22). It's so good. It comes with bacon, lettuce, fried green tomato, remoulade, avocado, cheddar, and turkey. The bread used is such a good vessel - it's grilled and has enough girth to keep everything together. The cheddar was cheddar-ing and basically the star of the show. Highly recommend. I love that they carefully weave all sorts of different cheeses into every part of their menu. Everything you order has a nice little cheese surprise. The little market out front is an added bonus. You can pick up all the goods for a lil charcuterie board or if you're in need of a gift. The ambiance is casual but nice, and I love all things cheese so I was in heaven with the menu. Really love the food here and the ambiance. We sat in the back on the patio and it was very cute for brunch vibes. We got the beets salad, smoked trout rillette, Caesar salad, and cheese board.
