I was hoping to leave 5 stars. We were traveling and I got excited when i saw so many gluten free menu options as I have celiac disease. We even drove out of the way because of this place's awesome online presence. We arrived and were sat in a booth a little tight for our family of 5, even though there were larger tables available. Our server introduced herself, she was kind enough, we ordered our drinks. It took 20 minutes before the bartender walked over to inform me they were out of the wine i ordered. No biggie i ordered a different wine. The server came to take our food order, and I was planning on ordering an appetizer, the dip trio which is listed as gluten free. However upon inquiring the server let us know that the dips themselves are gluten free however they offer nothing gluten free to dip in the dips. The corn chips they offer are fried in the same frier as all the items containing gluten so they end up cross contaminated and not safe for someone with allergies. Even at this point I would NEVER have considered writting a 1 star review and tarnishing a businesses good reputation. Even at this point i simply thought it was an oversight and not malicious on the part of the business. The kicker for me was when i asked to speak to a manager to provide feedback, our server approached a man drinking at the bar. So the person who claimed to be the manager was drinking at the bar. He came over with a smug look on his face and said "whats up?". I said "Hi how are you?" He said "fine, whats up?". I knew at that point it did not matter what i said to him, he was not taking me seriously. Anyone in customer service that doesn't politly ask how you are is not listening anyway. I very kindly and professionally suggested that if they were gonna list 3 dips on the menu as gluten free that those of us have celiac disease would very much appreciate if they simply kept a bag of grocery store corn chips in the back for the guests with allergies. He rolled his eyes as he said "thanks for the feedback ill let the owner know". I tipped our server over 20% as it wasnt her fault. I walked out before my husband as i took the 2 younger kids back to the car, he was waiting for our oldest to finish using the restroom. As my husband was leaving the manager drinking at the bar said "sorry" in a condescending tone while laughing. I could have gotten over an oversight on the menu, but cannot forgive a drunken, unprofessional manager. It was like he was trying to pick an aggression at my husband. Most managers appreciate feedback and an opportunity to make something right instead of a bad review. The food we did get was great, hopefully the owner wises up and gets rid of the rude manager and either corrects the error on the menu OR has some gluten free corn chips available in the future. Again mistakes and uneducated staff i can forgive all day, there are no excuses for rude managers drinking alcohol during their shift. read more

We're a military family PCS'ing from one base to another, and found ourselves in Florence for the night. We did a quick search for gluten free food in the area, and navigates towards King Jefe, with our 5 kids. The place was small, but they easily moved tables together for us. I was pretty stoked about the atmosphere and music playing- I felt very comfortable. The menu was great. Gluten free items were marked, and the servers were really helpful. I thought it was kinda strange to go to a taco joint and not have chips and salsa brought to you, but instead you had to order them as an appetizer? But it's cool because they have many different kinds of salsa, and they were ALL good. I especially liked the pineapple jalapeño. The food was GREAT! So great. All the great. Very nice! We had sushi there today. Warning the rolls are HUGE! So keep that in mind when ordering. I ordered two, the dragon roll and the spicy crunchy tuna roll. Both had cream cheese (must be the chefs preference) they were very tasty. I ordered the southwestern roll from the appetizer menu and it's now my favorite thing. Service was fast and very good. This is a cool little place located in the downtown of Florence. I came in after reading a review from a fellow yelper, and I am glad that I did. They offer several different types of tacos, but the bowls are what caught my eye. I settled with the poke bowl, and was very surprised at the generous portion of tuna. The restaurant has a small bar at the front, with a few frozen margarita machines. There are several booths surrounded by a bunch of tables. There seemed to be adequate servers for the lunch hour. Service was fast but food was even faster. Our server Christy was very nice and happy to answer all of our questions. We shared the dip trio with chile con queso, guacamole, and fire roasted tomato salsa. All three were fantastic. The queso was served in a small cast iron skilled and had been slightly browned on top. The chips were a bit over salted, but went perfectly with our beers. They had a good selection of regional and Mexican beers. We each had the tacos, which you get to pick two plus a side for 9.95. I got the cheech, lucky lucha, and the sweet corn salad. The cheech was a recommendation from our server, Christy. The meat was tender and very flavorful. The corn salad was fantastic, I think I finished it before even touching the tacos. The lucky lucha features fried avocado which was a great vegetarian option. My fiancé had the swami, slow poke Rodriguez, and the chorizo mac. Both tacos were delicious. Our server, Christy, told us that the chorizo mac was a customer favorite, and for good reason. King Jefe likes to keep it cold and loud. The AC was blasting, as was the music. That might be your thing but it did not work well for my children (who were trying to climb on my lap the whole meal to snuggle up from being freezing cold). The music was so loud I could not carry on a conversation of any sort. We were just there for lunch, not clubbing. It was difficult for my mother to order because she was having difficulty speaking loudly enough for our server to hear her. The food was tasty, but I was very disappointed in the portion size for the price. One of my tacos was supposed to have avocado on it. It had one tiny slice of a slice, like they had cut a slice in three pieces and adorned my taco with this tiny jewel. It was so silly I laughed when I saw it. A single taco for $4 or $5 should be generously filled. They were not. However, everything we had was very flavorful. The guacamole appetizer (again, skimpy) was very good. This is one of those times that I wish a rating of 3.5 were possible. I thought the tacos were very average but the sides were really good, the menu showed a lot of variety and the service was great. Also, Florence is not exactly a foodie Mecca so it's certainly very good compared to the other options! We started with an order of chips with two salsas-verde and chipotle. The chipotle salsa was great. It had a nice kick and a good smoky flavor but wasn't overly spicy so even people who don't eat spicy food would likely enjoy it. The verse salsa was disappointing. It lacked the bright, tangy flavor that verde salsa should have and just didn't taste much like anything at all. The salsas are 2 dollars a piece and the portion size is small which was kind of annoying since I'm a huge salsa fan. The tacos were ok but definitely not stand out. Both the beef and the chicken were really dry. My fiancée got the al pastor tacos and the tuna tacos and he really liked his so maybe I just didn't order the right things. There were lots of options on the taco menu including several vegetarian options so that's a plus. The chorizo mac side dish was really good-I could definitely see coming back and just ordering that instead of a taco! Service was prompt despite the fact the restaurant was pretty busy and our waitress, Taylor was really nice. I ordered a second chipotle salsa since I didn't much care for the verde salsa and she didn't charge me for it which was a nice gesture! I'll likely be back the next time I'm passing through but I'll probably be trying different tacos than what I got today. read more

This place seems like it is busy all the time which can make it tough since it has such a small seating area but it is worth it. I was fortunate enough to find a seat at the bar and was promptly served by the knowledgeable and friendly staff. I ordered the strawberry margarita which was good followed by the Lil me thyme which had too much of the thyme flavor for my liking. Each margarita had a rim of black and white salt but they only put it on half so you could choose if you wanted to taste it or not. As for the food I ordered the Slow Poke Rodriguez, Uncle Terry (since I loved the sauce from their other restaurant Tubb's), and the chorizo mac. Completely disappointed with the entire experience. We were passing through going to Florida and a local recommended this place. The inside was freezing, the waitress brought the wrong order three times, when we finally received the right order our food was bland and our taco meat ( chicken and hamburger) was cold, old and tough. The children did receive fresh chicken and they enjoyed it. The owner/manager did apologize and we gave our feedback. For a local it may be good because there is nothing around to compare.
