This is the spot for consistent, flavorful, "soul food" on the south side! Yes, I know the owner, Pastor Ralph Driver and his entire family, but it's more about the history of servicing and loving PEOPLE. The food is phenomenal, especially the Cornish hens, and Kings had the BEST MAC and Cheese on all of Chicago! This place takes care of people; from large portions, to feeding the needy, you must visit this spot. Great dessert section as well, especially the Carmel cake. Lastly, this may not be for you, but if you need prayer, a word of encouragement, ask for Pastor Driver or any of his children-you will not only get "food for your stomach, but most importantly, Food for YOUR SOUL!" We had been talking about the absence of REAL soul food in the city. Sure, you have those upscale soul food "inspired" places now but they just don't have the same soul to it. So glad we stopped. We were having a hard time finding a place in the neighborhood that just had good food and a place to sit down. I'll be honest, this is not without the neighborhood charm but that's REAL Chicago. It takes me back though. It was nice to see folks coming in and patiently waiting for their orders. As for the food. My god. Everything was spot on. The Mac and cheese was real Mac and cheese. It wasn't hiding behind an overload of cheese. It reminded me of my mom saying get that block of cheese out and get to shredding. It was the real deal. I don't even like cornbread like that but the muffins were banging! Portions were a good size. Prices were reasonable for what you are getting. The sweet potatoes had a special ingredient that I won't share. You gotta go try it. Again, not a huge sweet potato fan but this was like good sweet potato pie. Amazing food and service peach cobbler was the best I have ever had for a restaurant all most like home made. Cat fish was great nice and flaky and crunchy and very lo salt. The greens mustard and turps were very good. They add ham hocks in there greens. Corn muffins were very good.. Now the ladies that took my order were very nice. I challenged one lady, to prove to me that her peach cobbler was good... she won the bet I gave both ladies tips. A true test is to me is too reheat there food in the microwave the next day... the taste of the food held up too my Expectations. Oh the chicken wing are the best I have ever had because (get ready) they have the nerve too drip there chicken wing's fresh I swear un-f-ing believable.. The Banana Pudding was awesome. Wish I had purchased a large. It's literally perfect. 2 1 Entrée 2 Sides I chose included Turkey Wing, cabbage, with rice and beans. I wasn't impressed with the rice and beans. It was bland. Turkey wing was ok. And the cabbage was good. The Banana Pudding was inside the bag and tied up. I appreciate that everything was secured and tamper free but I would suggest they tie cold items in a separate bag so it won't spoil or be warm for the customer. read more

When I called them the phone just rang and rang and no one ever answered. I did taste some of the food and it was good. Food and service is excellent! The best I have had in years, plus service is good I was concerned because they had so much on the menu. Very good food. The catfish was seasoned perfectly and crispy. Ther mac and cheese was real deal. String beans were yummy too. Corn bread muffins had pieces of corn baked in. Good too. Was not disappointed. read more

Delicious pound cake- I give it 5 stars! The pound cake is dense with a beautiful, crunchy outer crust. King falls short on the Caramel cake. It is moist but only has a thin layer of frosting. read more

I decided that i wanted some soul food. I had been thinking about this place for a while and actually I thought it had went out of business but it didn't. I got the turkey wings special with the three sides. The turkey wings were very good. My sides were dressing, spaghetti and red beans & rice. The dressing was really good. The spaghetti was sweet really didn't have a flavor to me. The red beans and rice was good. And they also give you cornbread with every meal. I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I think it's the same place from years ago that was open and close. Either way it's worth a try. read more

This was by far theeeee worst soul food that I've ever tasted! I ordered smothered pork chops...got 2 ginormous overcooked tough pork steaks. I ordered macaroni and cheese...got loose flavorless half done pasta that seemed as though it was taken out of the oven while still baking and lastly...the candied yams...they had peaches mixed in with them. Good basic soul food . I ordered the fried chicken combo with 3 sides Mac n cheese, candied sweet potatoes & cabbage. The cabbage was missing, but the items I did receive were good. The chicken was fried in a unique batter that wasn't overly seasoned. I had the chopped steak and onions along with green beans, spaghetti, and sweet potatoes. Cornbread muffins came with both dinners. The servings were ample and filling. No skimping here. But what I really liked was that we were able to grab this mini-banquet for under $30. Yes, friends, I kid you not. For less than the cost of a medium Lou Manalti pizza and a small salad, we had some real soul food. Now, don't be put off by the outside surroundings. This was my 1st order and was the best Soul Food I've had as carry out in a very very very long time. I had sweet potatoes, mac and cheese and string beans with bbq chicken YUMMM. Hubby had fried chicken, black eyed peas and cabbage, we both had muffins, dessert banana pudding and lemon cake. Ev'ver'rie thang was delicious and hot on delivery.
