A quick search later and I realized it was only 20 minutes from home. I immediately grabbed a friend and requested a dinner date for the item that caught my eye: the Bratwurst mit Kraut -- bratwurst cooked with apples and sauerkraut, served on a pretzel bun and topped with even more kraut, with a side of German potato salad ($12). But I'll admit... I was also eyeing their Obatzda Burger with Oktoberfest beer cheese. Feeling bold, I asked our waitress if I could order their regular Pretzel Braid appetizer ($9) but swap the usual cheez-wiz and spicy mustard for that dreamy Oktoberfest beer cheese instead. She paused, smiled, wrote it down, and said, "that sounds really good!" Bless the chef for making my pretzel + beer cheese fantasy come true. The pretzel braid was warm, soft, and perfectly salty, and that beer cheese was the real MVP -- smooth, melty, not too hot, and with a proper beer-cheese finish. When the bratwurst plate arrived, it was a showstopper. Juicy brat, tangy kraut piled high, and tucked inside a pretzel roll that was soft but sturdy enough to hold it all together. No mustard needed! The German potato salad surprised me, though -- I'm used to the warm version, so finding it chilled caught me off guard. But honestly? It worked. Perfectly seasoned, just wet enough to be salad without drifting into soupy territory. I demolished both. Dessert was impossible to skip after hearing our waitress describe it to another table. We shared both the Apple Caramel Crumb Cake and the Lemon Blueberry Mascarpone Cake. The crumb cake was served warm with ice cream, loaded with thick, crunchy topping that didn't rely on chopped nuts (bonus points!). The mascarpone cake was light and buttery with the perfect balance of lemon and blueberry -- like saying goodbye to summer and hello to fall all in one dessert sitting. Southside Deli's Oktoberfest menu blew me away, and if their everyday offerings are anywhere close, I've been seriously missing out. Add in free parking, a convenient location, and plenty of seating, and it's an easy go-to spot for lunch or dinner. Southside is officially on my food rotation radar now!

Idk when we'll be back. But trust me we will. I didn't even mind it had Philadelphia eagles crap hanging up. lol. (Go Steelers). The cheesesteak was very good! The bread and steak were delicious, even the wiz went well with it, although putting it on before the meat is a little different. The brisket sandwich, I was not a fan of. It's just my opinion but it's served pretty basic. It comes with au jus, but that doesn't really add much. It's kind of bland, and it doesn't taste like it was smoked, idk how they prepared the meat, or if they get it delivered, but it was very bland. I've read other reviews of people saying they waited over an hour and this and that, but I got my sandwich's pretty quickly! Hot and ready to go! I would definitely recommend this place if you're in the area! I ordered Mac salad but I got potato salad instead, but I don't hold that against them, accidents happen, and the potato salad was good!

I placed my order online and went with a Hefty size Classic Cheesesteak, and a Husky size Philly Special Hoagie. Total after tax/tip was $34.00. How were they? Cheesesteak- Fantastic! Nice seeded bread, tons of meat and cooper sharp cheese. Onions were cut a little big and laid on top, so they started to fall all over the place (eat this outside your car, trust me!) while I was eating. Flavors were great, though! Damn fine cheesesteak and I would definitely return to get another. Hoagie- This thing was packed with goodies! They also use the "meat blanket" technique that I have only seen at LaSpadas down in Florida, previously. All the ingredients were well put together, HUGE, good bread, but there was a lack of tang in the olive oil/vinegar dressing. It was basically absent. That's why the 4 stars. Maybe you need to order extra or more vinegar? Something was definitely needed though. It was pretty plain tasting. Don't get me wrong, it was still a good sandwich, but it could have been a GREAT sandwich with some extra flavor of the oil/vinegar. This would definitely be my sandwich spot if I lived in York!

Picnic table type seating by the ordering area. This area also had a condiment cow (you've got to see it to believe it) and a small area for local products to be sold. Right by the register was a board full of already purchased meals. Hungry but don't have the money for a meal? Pick one of the receipts for food that has already been paid for and enjoy. Loved this "Pay it Forward" space. The restaurant also has a huge dining room with typical seating (tables of different sizes and chairs). There was also a bar in the dining room which looks like it could be a coffee bar? It wasn't in use when we visited. A lot of funeral attendees descended on this space in a short amount of time. There were upwards of thirty people. Despite this onslaught and their probably not being staffed for such a rush, the service was great. Orders were taken quickly and food was out much faster than I would've expected. My family was very pleased with their food. Pretty typical diner food, though they raved about the ice cream. Not many vegan options. I ordered the black bean burger and a side of fries. When I mentioned fries the lady taking my order asked "Regular fries, curly or sweet potato?" Wait? We have choices? That's not something I expected. The black bean burger was fine. Fries were good. Price seemed reasonable. Wish they had more vegan options but, we aren't exactly in an area clamoring for vegan food.

If you get hungry or need to charge your electric vehicle somewhere about midway along the route, your options are limited.. with most folks opting to stop at one of the Service Plazas in Sideling Hill (Mile 172.3), Blue Mountain (Mile 202.5), or Cumberland Valley (219.1) for the usual fast food outlets. For those of you who prefer made-to-order, reasonably-priced food (particularly compared to the Service Plaza options) in a casual, family-friendly ambiance or a Tesla Supercharger for your non-ICE vehicles or both -- just pull off the turnpike for McKinney Station, located literally right off the ramp at Mile 201. On a recent roadtrip along the length of the mainline with my dining companion and her father, we were about halfway across the state approaching the Blue Mountain Service Plaza when pangs of hunger struck my passengers. The two of them prefer locally-owned restaurants over the corporate fast food outlets located in the Service Plazas, so I suggested getting off the highway to check out local options. I wasn't sure what to expect when we took the exit for Chambersburg / Shippensburg, but McKinney Station was an oasis -- offering freshly-made, innovative sandwiches, served quickly by the friendly, accommodating staff to get us back on our way towards Pittsburgh. The menu puts an emphasis on simple, casual, easy-to-share, and made-to-order -- such as hot dogs, beef/veggie/grilled chicken burgers, sandwiches, salads, and baskets with a variety of fried foods like chicken fingers, buffalo wings, or onion rings. The house specialty is a "Wedgie" -- a sandwich served pita-style on naan bread -- which was excellent. I had the "Best Wedgie" sandwich ($10), comprised of a fried chicken patty, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and thousand island dressing served on naan bread, which was FANTASTIC. My dining companion and her father opted for the "Rooster Wedgie" sandwich ($9), comprised of grilled chicken strips, lettuce, tomato, and BBQ sauce served on naan bread, which they both really enjoyed. The three of us shared two sides of sweet potato french fries, which were perfectly seasoned and cooked. McKinney Station and its customers also support the local community, with many diners opting "pay it forward" by providing a free meal for others in the community who may be struggling. If you're interested in buying a meal for someone else, just let the staff know and they'll ring it up and add the receipt to a bulletin board next to the cash register. If you're going through a tough time, there's no stigma in grabbing one of the receipts off the bulletin board and presenting it to the cashier for a prepaid meal. We will definitely be back next time we're in the area! PRO TIP #1: Check out the Condiment Cow for your condiments! PRO TIP #2: There's a pair of cornhole boards in the dining room to occupy you (or your kids) while you're waiting for your food.
