Found myself in New Cumberland again as lunchtime was rolling to a close & remembered to revisit Carpe Diem. Arrived around 1:30pm (Friday) - were still some lunchtime diners & a large group in a side room, but was still refreshingly quiet. I had a moment to peruse the specials board before the gentleman whom I've seen in previous visits arrived with the menu. I decided to go with the Chicken Marsala special (14.95) (which arrived quickly, I might add) - it was fantastic! Decent lunch portion & included lightly toasted buttered bread, which I used to dab up every ounce of sauce that I could! I did everything but lick the plate! I like the décor & the general relaxed vibe of this place - noticed that they now have some evening hours (Fri & Sat 5-9) - will have to gather up my girlfriend & stop in for a nice dinner! Walking in, you'll be amazed. VERY nice ambiance for a breakfast joint. From there, you'll have a very hum-drum experience. The quality of the brewed coffee is good, but the cups are small. The menu is ample, but the kitchen turns out a poor product cooked by someone who clearly doesn't care about quality. And that nice ambiance I mentioned? Ruined by "Muzak" over the stereo system. You feel like you're in the elevator of a 1970's office building. They miss a lot of important details here. Like, why are the barstools so low to the counter that your food is almost at eye-level? Why are the milk and sugar for the coffee in fast-food packaging? It's not a terrible place, it's just not great either. With a few modifications it could reach some greatness. read more

What a wonderful hidden gem. I just came across this place today. The inside of the restaurant is visually stimulating. Now moving onto the food. I arrived for breakfast. Many great choices. I enjoyed the the ham and cheese omelet with home fries and coffee. I let them know that I have a gluten allergy although that they didn't offer an alternative. My wife and I enjoyed a quiet delicious traditional Italian dinner. The owner personally took care of us which made for a special experience. The menu is reasonably varied and priced fairly. It is a byob place so the bill won't ruin your evening. I will also say that they are very flexible if you want to customize one of their dishes to your personal taste. On a snow heavy early Friday afternoon in Jan. 2025, Nico welcomed us with a warmth and immediately provided menus to my son and I. About 5-7 other patrons were enjoying their food while Nico effortlessly provided service with aplomb that proved to be engaging and friendly. We ordered the chicken marsala and lamb gyro. These included a fresh salad with the marsala and I ordered a cup of stracciatella soup. The soup was piping hot and full of flavor and the salad was light which went well with the generous portion of chicken marsala which was flavorful and included fresh mushrooms. Without asking, Nico brought each of us a wedge of fresh bread seasoned with delicious olive oil. The gyro was excellent with fresh vegetables, a generous meat portion, and delicious tzatziki. Carpe diem is a great place for breakfast or lunch. Nico reported that he's looking forward to starting a limited supper service in the near future. We had a Ladies Lunch for 4 planned, which I (unnecessarily, apparently) made reservations for. This was my pick, based on the overall great reviews. Oh man, I got this one wrong. What a nightmare! I guess I should have known when you go in on a Sunday morning for brunch and the place is nearly empty that there was a problem. The reviews for this restaurant are excellent. I found out later by my own experience that is because the owner will bully and push and cajole you to not leave any negative publicity on any social media. When our server showed us to the patio I thought things were headed in a good direction. The patio is lovely and has a lot of possibilities. The server seemed friendly but awfully nervous though and had a difficult time with just the drink order. My best friend got an iced tea and it was the colour of dirty water, (maybe water with a little splash of tea). We placed our orders. I ordered a Turkey sandwich with no tomato. I was asked what kind of bread to put my sandwich on. My friend ordered a Turkey sandwich with no mayo but was not asked what kind of bread she wanted. Friend 2 ordered a black and blue burger. Friend 3 got a salad. The salad was the only thing that wasn't messed up. My sandwich arrived with tomato. My friends sandwich had mayo. Friend 2 received a BBQ mushroom burger and Friend 3's salad arrived correctly. Then it got weird. The owner who has a heavy accent and a very bombastic personality came over multiple times during this process,... to proclaim how amazing his food is and how everyone loves it. To talk about upcoming specials. When the food came out with errors he started coming over and arguing about how things are great quality. He repeatedly said he wanted to make sure we were OK so that we wouldn't leave bad reviews. When my friend tried her hamburger (which was completely incorrect but she accepted it because we had an appointment afterwards and we were already anxious to leave at this point), the burger was some kind of meatloaf mix, and inedible. The owner argued with her that his burgers were the BEST and if he used the meat other restaurants did, the burger would be smaller. Then he got handsy. On his FOURTH or FIFTH visit to our table, he was leaning over my friend #1, NOT distancing himself from her face, and had his hand on her while he explained everything he makes is great. It was at that point we asked for checks. He charged us each $5 for the disastrous meals while adamently pushing us to "not write anything bad on Facebook or Google". Only 1 star because I can't give it any fewer. Went to Sunday brunch with some friends. I should have known when we walked in and the cute place was empty, that something was off. Worst restaurant experience of my life. We were seated on the patio, on a gorgeous day. We were seated by the person I assumed to be a manager, and he introduced our server, who was an older gentleman with a thick accent. I thought it was a little weird that when my friend asked for creamer for her coffee that the manager guy pulled them out of his pants pocket. Not an apron pocket. The pocket of his PANTS. Ew. My friend ordered an unsweetened ice tea, which seemed to confuse the server. When it arrived, it was a glass full of ice with some off color water, like it was super weak. This server, I guess was also some kind of a baker or cook, because he recruited the other people seated across the patio from us, in exclaiming how he makes the best bread ever and we should buy/have some. It was awkward and weird. I don't generally go out to make friends with other restaurant patrons. Every one of the 4 of us had an issue with our orders. One got tomatoes when she asked for none. Another got mayo when she asked for none. Two people ordered the same sandwich, one was asked for her bread preference, the other wasn't. One was asked for her cheese preference even though the menu said Turkey and Cheddar sandwich. My friend ordered a cranberry salad and when the dish was delivered, correctly, she was told, "Here's your caesar." Me, I ordered a burger, which the menu said came with hand cut fries. First, calling something a hamburger sets up certain expectations. One of which is that you will be receiving beef, unless otherwise stated. First of all, I ordered the blue cheese burger and was instead served their BBQ burger. I was annoyed but was going to be okay with it. Until I took a bite. I can only describe it as some kind of gummy, over-spiced, meatloaf type thing. I didn't like the way it looked, smelled or tasted. By this point, we were all just ready to go. Also, the handcut fries, were clearly frozen, food service fries. They were my favorite part of the meal. This server guy kept coming back to our table. He argued with us about the errors and made a huge deal out of how he spends so much more money to make his "special" and "large" burgers and if he just used the frozen ones like everyone else they would be smaller. Huh? You can't just make something else up with whatever kind of mystery meat and call it a burger. He actually PUT HIS HANDS on my friends. He leaned over our table and our food without a mask. This is completely unacceptable behavior. We are not friends, we were customers. Stay out of the bubble, sir. We asked for our checks. At this point server guy tells us he's not going to charge us full price because he doesn't want us to leave bad reviews. I feel compelled to be honest about this crazy experience. I still can't believe we weren't on some kind of hidden camera show, it was so bad. The reviews for this restaurant are excellent. We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas Eve breakfast. It was freezing outside but the welcoming hospitality, combined with a cup of soup, warmed us up quickly. Eggs Benedict were spot on. The Hollandaise sauce had so much flavor (some places make it pretty bland). I ordered a cup of the portobello mushroom soup - because I'm a sucker for good soup - and it did not disappoint. Homemade and perfect flavor. My husband ordered the Carpe Diem breakfast and said the bacon was cooked perfectly, same with the eggs and pancakes. We will be coming back again!! Our coffee cups never made it to the half way point without Gus refilling us. The coffee is really good. I had three cups. We had a party of 12 and everyone was extremely happy with their food. The menu has many great breakfast and lunch options. The prices are very reasonable too. I got the biscuits and gravy which were excellent. Excellent breakfast spot tucked off the main road. I'm visiting from Texas and decided to stop in on my day off, I could not have picked a better place! I was greeted with a smile by Gus as soon as I walked in and got a nice seat at their beautiful bar. I had a typical Ruben Sandwich the Corned beef was sliced thin and very tender and it is a typical Ruben with the Swiss, Sauerkraut & 1000 island dressing on Rye nothing special! The wife had The Black & Blue Burger Nice size but texture issues & tasted more like processed meatloaf or McRibs or something to that effect! The place was extremely clean and our server was actually the owner! Being as the menu stated breakfast till 11AM we ordered from the lunch but we did hear they do serve breakfast later now! Anyways it was slow for a Tuesday which was nice! We will come back to try the breakfast menu at some point! The food came out quickly and piping hot. My eggs were done perfectly and I loved how crispy the potatoes were. The creamed chipped beef gravy was rather thin--however the flavor was very good. My husband loved his wrap and said it was really packed full of meat. The coffee was also very good--a robust roast, which I love. Hard to find a good decaf but this place certainly had it! The menu itself is a bit small but they also post daily specials that looked very tempting. Prices are very affordable as well. Recommend: The breakfast was all very good--especially loved the crispy potatoes! Atmosphere: I never visited this place before it's current owners, but it's clear that they did some extensive renovations. The light fixtures give off a steampunk vibe and everything seems new and clean. The private dining area is also a major plus! Service: The service here was absolutely wonderful. We were promptly greeted and seated. The owner himself came over more than once to make sure everything was to our liking. We had a lovey Saturday morning breakfast at the bar where we were met with great service, a friendly and likable owner, and just the right amount of food options. I had a 2 eggs, hash browns, and toast with bacon. My husband had the same with a side of sausage gravy and extra toast. All was fresh, promptly delivered, and tasty. We enjoyed their coffee as well!
