It was about…read more45 minutes from home, I'd never visited but I remembered driving by it several times due to the unique building structure. We came for breakfast and we weren't disappointed. Breakfast was the typical greasy spoon -- which was what we needed on a cold wintery day. My wife got eggs, 2 sides of meat and 2 huge pancakes. I got the meat sampler (bacon, sausage, ham, scrapple), 2 eggs, homefries and toast. Wow! And our waitress was so fun. This is an old school kind of spot, if you appreciate those types of places, then this will be a homerun. Plenty of parking and easy access. Lots of "feels" from the inside vibe and paintings on the wall. Reminds me of being a kid. Breakfast, with coffee, was less than $40 for 2 (including tip). Side note -- they had a homestyle roast beef or chicken dinner, over noodles, mashed potatoes, corn, w/ dessert for their lunch special. It looked amazing (for $16). We had a great visit - and will come next time for lunch!

Haven't eaten…read moreat this location in many years ever since I was subjected to the terrible food it served before when it was called Rosie's diner or Rosie's restaurant... I can't remember which? I'm happy to report that the food and the service with new owners at the new diner is excellent. My wife and I both had the fried fantail shrimp entrée which comes with a salad and two sides. The shrimp were quite juicy and tasty and had a nice crunch so they must've been coated with among other things some panko breadcrumbs. The portion was generous as you will see in the photo. Both salads were good, but the greens were just a little tired. French fries were also quite nice and covered with kind of a tasty and crispy coating of some kind. Service was good and we never had to wait very long for anything. The diner has two display cases full of delicious, looking desserts... But we were too full to eat anymore. The bill for the two entrées + 2 soft drinks was $39 + an $8 tip. Good, solid diner food and I would return in the future with no reservations.

We wanted to give Gateway Diner another chance after a disappointing dinner visit, so we came back…read morefor breakfast. Sadly, it was another letdown. One thing I will say is that the restaurant itself is very nice. The dining room is clean, updated, and has a newer feel rather than the classic old school diner atmosphere, which we really liked. Our waitress was also friendly, welcoming, and attentive throughout our visit. My husband's bagel sandwich with double sausage, egg, and cheese was excellent. It was easily the highlight of the meal. Everything else missed the mark. We both ordered home fries, but they were only lightly browned on top while the rest of the potatoes were saturated with what tasted like butter or oil. After one bite, neither of us could eat them. My two over medium eggs were cooked correctly, but the wheat toast was very thin and lacked the crisp texture you expect from toast. The biggest disappointment was the corned beef hash. I specifically ordered it well done and very crispy, but it was only browned on one side while the other side was still soft and undercooked. We asked if it could be cooked longer, but when it came back it wasn't much different. I took one more bite and still couldn't eat it. By the end of the meal, most of my breakfast and both orders of home fries were still on the plates, and my husband had only eaten his sandwich. We paid for the entire meal without complaint, but no one asked if something was wrong or why so much food had been left behind. A simple check in or offering to make things right would have made a big difference. We know every restaurant can have an off day, and we genuinely hope others have a better experience than we did. Unfortunately, after giving Gateway Diner two chances and leaving disappointed both times, we've decided it just isn't the place for us.

Located on a hill - plenty of parking across the street. The restaurant is inside an older style home but it still has nice space, and is very quaint, quiet and intimate. Low lighting and just a very cozy atmosphere. The time of your reservation is the time of your seating so coming early doesn't mean you'll be sat early. Ordered a mixed drink from the bar and a half bottle of some wine for the table. It is a fixed price menu, but there are some very good options that cover a lot of different flavors and tastes. For an appetizer I went with the special soup: French onion - which wasn't the traditional kind with the cheese melted over the bowl. Instead it was a piece of bread with melted cheese in the soup. Not my favorite presentation I've ever had of this dish - but the flavor was good. Also tried the fried green tomatoes - which were good. Really liked the pimento cheese under the tomato slices and the other garnish sauces on the plate. For my entree I chose the filet mignon. It was paired with mashed potatoes and a cream sauce. Steak was ordered medium, parts of it were definitely rare. Still very good. Added a side of mac and cheese which was very creamy and good. For the dessert, I opted to go with the carrot cake. Probably the best dessert I've had in recent memory: cake was moist, the topping was a very sweet cream cheese and caramel drizzle. Overall, this place was very good. Our waitress was very personable and talkative, providing ideas and taking the time to make sure our experience was normal and comfortable. Would highly recommend here.

Review of Public House in Berkeley Springs, WV (3/2/25)…read moreAfter having Public House on our list for quite a while, we finally visited, and it was well worth the wait. The experience was very pleasant and unhurried, and we appreciated not having to drive far. The seating arrangement was comfortable, allowing for easy conversation with my husband without the frequent interruptions of loud noises. Our server was attentive and had to repeat all the specials because there were so many, which was impressive. Despite being a prix fixe menu, there were still plenty of options to choose from. For appetizers, I ordered the fried green tomatoes, which were definitely shareable. The portion size was generous. For the main course, I had the crab cakes, and once again, the serving was substantial. They certainly did not skimp on the portions. We shared a half bottle of Montepulciano wine, which was perfect and a great midpoint for the meal. The dessert was just the right amount to have a sweet bite without overindulging. Overall, we spent about 1.5 hours enjoying an intimate meal with a lot of good food to choose from in a cute, quaint house. Definitely recommended! L
