This place is so special! The servers and chef are lovely and engaging, and the food is just wonderful! Our table had the pork, which is one of the best we have had in ages, and the halibut, which was litereally the best halibut Ive ever had. We also enjoyed the clam app and burger. There was no dish we didn't love. There was also a value focused and creative wine list. Our only suggestion would be to stock a few more WA beers. We would have happily started the whole meal again if we could have eaten another bite! This is a can't miss place for us on Orcas Island. read more

I can't imagine how difficult it is to manage a restaurant in a seasonal location. We made a reservation for a Tuesday night and it was packed. The staff was very helpful and we had a glass of wine on the porch waiting for our table to open up. Staff is very friendly. Everything that we tasted was perfect. Often different components of a meal can be inconsistent, but not our meals. I didn't taste the hamburger, but our table mate got it with caramelized onions and loved it. I had the chicken, 1/2 chicken perfectly preserved with delicious mashed potatoes and tasty asparagus. I tasted the steak frites and halibut and I'd love to come back for any of them. All were well prepared. Stayed at the inn, was quite as the restaurant was closed for off season so missed out on experiencing the food. We got the Spruce suite which was downstairs located behind the restaurant. Very nice and cozy with a great view of tue water. Everything was clean and abundant of extra supplies. Although the water pressure in the bathroom was less desirable so took forever getting ready while staying there. Overnight visit. We checked into the Pine Queen Suite. The restaurant was closed so we couldn't enjoy that piece. Location has a great view of the water. Peaceful area. Contactless entry we got a text when our room was ready with instructions on how to get into our room. Nice postcard on the door. Room is set up for comfort. Complementary snacks, coffee, tea, chips and oatmeal. Host left a print out of places to eat in the are with wifi information etc. very helpful! Bed was comfortable. Roomy area for spreading out. Perfect little setup. We really enjoyed our stay. Hopefully next time we book when the restaurant is open. read more

This place was wonderful. Not at all what we expected, but delivered a great experience. The room was clean, spacious, and had all the amenities for a nice relaxing getaway. It's not too far from the Orcas ferry and easy to get around by vehicle. The rooms sit on top of the Kingfish restaurant, that was absolutely a wonderful dining experience. Stevie the chef, delivers your food and is genuinely interested and passionate about what she has to offer. The staff were great, friendly, and happy. If you have one night for a splurgy meal out on Orcas Island, it should be Kingfish. First, ambiance: Kingfish is in the bottom floor of an old hotel that overlooks the West Sound Marina. It's not in a town nor next to anything else, so it really gives that "remote country bistro" vibe. There's a large deck with 6-7 tables, and absolutely you should sit outside if you possibly can, even if you need to wear a jacket. Not only will you have great sunset views as you dine, the many locals who dine at Kingfish inevitably sit outside and you can chat (and get recommendations). Speaking of chatting: the staff is very friendly, and Chef Raymond comes out to talk to the guests. Sometimes he brings extras for you to try. And, of course, the food is delicious. We had the seasonal salad, duck, and bouillabaise, followed by beignets and chocolate torte. The ingredients were fresh and seasonal, from the farms around the island. And while the prices are high-end, the portions are generous. If you're visiting Orcas, you need to dine here. No idea what the hotel is like, though. read more

What a fantastic meal! Chef Raymond greeted us with fresh rolls with olive oil and balsamic on the side. We started with the beet and heirloom tomato burrata salad. The fried beet leaf was a big surprise and tasted amazing. My wife had the pasta with ragu and bolognese. I had the bouillabaisse. Both were amazing. We were visiting the island for our honeymoon and pleasantly surprised to discover that King Fish is now allowing indoor dining by reservation. We snagged up the only remaining time (8:15 pm), and we were excited to dress up and have a little night out. We ordered 2 entrees with the plan to get dessert. We started off with drinks - an amber ale for my husband and a glass of the orcas project Tempranillo for me. I got the last glass of it and was happy to get to try it after we had a nice experience at their tasting room earlier. For dinner, he got the pasta with smoked salmon. He thoroughly enjoyed this dish and was hyped over the generous amount of smoked salmon on it. In fact, he convinced me to give King Fish 5 stars instead of 4 because of how much he enjoyed his meal. I opted for the za'atar spiced cauliflower (just a touch undercooked). This dish came with pearl couscous (my favorite grain, theirs was buttery but otherwise needed salt), asparagus (taste and consistency seemed like it was steamed, needed salt), and some sort of purée/sauce mixture on the side (which was by far the best part on the plate). Every bite definitely needed some of that sauce on it. Overall, I was a little underwhelmed but still had a pleasant dining experience and feel that this place should be on your list of places to go when on the island. Just order something different than me. For dessert, we went with the chocolate torte. The blackberry sauce and creme was delectable! The consistency of the torte was more like a cheesecake than a cake. We were happy with our choice, but the apple crumble sounded great, too! read more

It's hard to picture how good some of the menu items will be because the combos were so fresh and interesting. We shared everything and both had a hard time choosing a favorite dish. In the summer, lots of Amazing Local seafood on the menu - especially the shrimp. Italian-ish in the approach to localness, seasonality, olive oil, cornmeal and garlic. We had reservations this last Saturday. We had to wait past our reservation time so the hostess could schmooze with a local customer. When we asked if we could sit outside ( which had about 8 tables-only on table occupied) we were thoroughly scolded by the hostess. " People make reservations a year in advance, so why would we do that? She could not have been any more condescending. We were there over 90 minutes. Not one person was seated outside. No reservations at all. Food was mediocre, the hostess was horrible. We went to The Inn at Ship Bay. Absolutely Fantastic. Great service. The Good: This is by far, one of the best experiences I've ever had. If I could rate 6 out of 5, I would gladly do so. My wife and I were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary and wanted a relaxing experience for the weekend. The Inn: I booked the "Queen Water View Suite" via Airbnb in the Kingfish Inn for one night. The suite was incredibly clean and cozy. Queen-size bed, full bathroom with soaps and towels, fridge and Keurig coffee maker (pods included), cups & utensils/wine opener, assorted complimentary snack, and a cute fireplace. These amenities only added to the comfort of the room but the icing on the cake was the view of the West Sound. Waking up to the sunrise over the bay was absolutely amazing. In addition to this, the Main Street (downtown) is only 10-12 minutes away (full of local coffee shops, restaurants, and gift shops). The Restaurant: Upon checking-in to the Inn, I was met by "Ray" who not only is the owner of the restaurant/inn, he's the executive chef. He graciously, gave me a quick tour of the restaurant and fit my wife and I in for an evening dinner reservation. It was so cool being able to walk from upstairs down to the restaurant for dinner. We sat out on the covered patio that overlooks the bay where there are warm blankets and space heaters to make you feel extra cozy. ALL ITEMS ON THE MENU ARE LOCALLY-SOURCED! We started with a local bottle of Orcas Project Temperino Wine (delicious) followed with the "Lum Farm Goat Tomme" (Red beet lavash, fig jam, toasted walnuts) as a starter (A-M-A-Z-I-N-G). I ordered the Linguini Carbonara (Skagit River uncured bacon, organic egg, HOMEMADE NOODLES) and my wife had the Sablefish w/ Red Risotto (Pan seared, beef risotto, apples, roasted brussels sprouts). Both were absolutely phenomenal. To finish the course, I ordered the Apple Crumble with house-made vanilla ice cream. Ray (exec chef/owner) then came to our table with a "Theo Chocolate Pudding" and wished us a happy 10-year anniversary. I have eaten and many restaurants around the world and can honestly say this was the best dining experience I've ever had. Thank you Ray and team for making our anniversary so special. They offer complimentary snacks and the best amenities, everything was topnotch! We also had dinner in their restaurant, its usually packed so please make a reservation in advance. The food was very delicious. We loved the lazy small island vibe and enjoyed our evening thoroughly. The only caveat is that if your room is above the restaurant, you can expect some noise from 5pm till 9ish. read more

Oh my goodness, how and why did it take me this long to dine at Kingfish?? Overall I'd give Kingfish 4.5 stars, but am bumping it up based on the view, overall cozy/warm interior, and flavorful fresh food (plus complimentary bites). I've been visiting Orcas every year for the past 25+ years and finally made a reservation on a Saturday evening for my family during our most recent trip. We stopped in around 6:45, and it was already getting dark (PNW October for you) although several diners were enjoying the outdoor dining deck. That view! They did have fires going as a source of heat, but it would have been a little too chilly for me, plus there is still a view from inside. For drinks my parents and I split a bottle of Orcas Island Winery Rose ($88). Definitely a tasty option, although I'm sure you could find an enjoyable, more affordable bottle/glass on the menu. They don't serve cocktails so you're going to want to be in a beer, wine, cider or seltzer mood! Since we were a bit peckish we ordered two dishes of the Grilled Miche Bread ($5), each small plate containing two slices. The barn owl bakery bread was indeed grilled and generously coated in Lopez Island evoo, kosher salt, and ground black pepper. I personally would have preferred slightly less seasoning but it was still an enjoyable carby snack. Oh! Our waitress brought out four complimentary savory Madeleines to enjoy shortly after we were seated. They smelled delicious but were not plant-based, so I opted out... trying to keep my dairy consumption down you know. For my entree I was debating between the Fettucine Pesto Alla Genovese ($24) and the Roasted Cauliflower Steak ($26). I ended up going with the fettucine and was very happy with my choice! The dish contained house-made pasta, Crows Farm Italian basil pesto, Hopewell Farm green beans, and baby potatoes. So much flavor! I omitted the cheese that they usually serve on top and the dish was still delicious. I would have preferred maybe a titch less salt, but it wasn't too too much. Even though the pesto contained a little bit of garlic (what an ingredient to be intolerant of, jeesh) I was a-okay. I appreciate that they offer a plant-based entree, but the cauliflower was missing a little something something, The cauliflower entree contained stewed tuscan beans, roasted garlic, pattypan squash, walla walla onions and tomatoes, plus smoked paprika. Some crispy roasted dino kale, toasted panko and a squeeze of lemon would have been nice. My mom snagged a bite of my pasta and preferred it as well. My mom and sister enjoyed the Mixed Greens Salad ($14) and my dad loved his Pan Roasted Salmon Salad ($38)... which is simply the Mixed Greens Salad with pan roasted salmon on top. So pretty! Our waitress brought out another complimentary treat--homemade chocolate squares--to end the meal. Soooo good! The right amount of sweet + bitter with a perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture. I wish I could purchase this chocolate at a store! Although I would end up inhaling it every day, so maybe it's a good thing that it's not easily accessible. Given the view and quality, prices are about right. The interior is very cozy and welcoming, not too dim like a lot of restaurants are these days, and definitely not pretentious. Service was decent, not extraordinary but no real complaints. Long story short, we're definitely coming back next visit! read more

I cannot recommend this gourmet fresh organic ingredients used fine restaurant highly enough! Chef Raymond is an amazing personable chef. He serves customers entrees to their table himself which I find to be a lovely personal touch. Even during this trying time we are currently living in as a diner you are not rushed to eat and run, instead we are encouraged to sit and enjoy the food and atmosphere. That is rare these days except on the Island. The ingredients in each recipe he offers are freshly acquired from local sources. I love that! We will most definitely return for another fabulous meal next time we visit Orcas Island and Eastsound. read more
