I've stopped by Kinokuniya Bookstore a few times, usually when I'm already in the Mitsuwa plaza, and it's a nice place to browse if you're in the area. That said, compared to their Manhattan location, this store feels noticeably smaller, especially when it comes to stationery, gifts, and anime merchandise. That part surprised me a bit since you'd expect more space in New Jersey, but the selection here is definitely more limited. They still carry a solid mix of manga and Japanese books, and some fun stationery and collectibles, so it's not like you'll leave empty-handed. It's clean, well-organized, and easy to spend some time wandering through. Overall, it's a convenient stop if you're already nearby and want to browse or pick up something small. But if I'm specifically planning a stationery or anime shopping trip, I'd go out of my way for the Manhattan location instead. Good for a casual visit, just not my first choice for a dedicated stationery run. read more

Love Kinokuniya and glad that this location is so conveniently next to Mitsuwa. This book store hails from Japan where they have about a dozen stores, the only two in the NYC area are this one the the one in Midtown at Bryant Park, though they have about a dozen stores in California around the San Fran and LA metro areas too. Free parking in the lot in front and behind the store, shared with the other businesses like Mitsuwa Marketplace, Daiso, Little Japan and Edgewater Performing Arts Center. Walking into the store they have seasonal gifts and decor in the front of the store, candles, calendars, holiday home items and party decorations. The stationery section follows on the left with aisles of notebooks, pens and pencils, cards and envelopes, notepads, etc. there's a few aisles of functional bathroom and kitchen products like hand towels, soap bowls, measuring spoons, lunch containers, then towards the back left is the manga section with English and Japanese sections. Back center and towards the right continues an assortment of books of various fictional genres and nonfiction topics. Coming around to the right side of the store, toys and games compose a couple aisles and then the checkout counter is at the front right. They really have so many fun products here, I didn't have much time to spend a couple weekends ago, though I'll be back to check some of their gifting items. read more

Books Kinokuniya is my type of wonderland. Full of stationary and cute trinkets I knew I would find something to buy. I search the whole store and purchased a uniball refillable 4 ink click pen. I absolutely love that I was able to customize the colors and ink sizes. I wanted a sticker or two but they were expensive. I also want one of those DIY miniatures sets. They are a good price but since I was traveling it wasn't the best purchase for this visit. I could spend all day in this place. I love all the gifts, one off items and loads of anime. In addition to books and comics, you'll find all sorts of fun contraptions, puzzles, cute figurines/stuffed animals, stationary, and little gift type items. As if I didn't have enough (half-read) books and blind boxes--kino is always a must when in the area. I limited myself to one book while I treated myself to a slow relaxing browse of every aisle before paying at the register with a kind clerk. I like that they have expanded past only having books here. Puzzles and stationary and pens, etc. most of the books are paperback, with a good range of Japanese magazines. There is a children's section for children's books which was nice. read more

The service is very nice, everyone is very helpful and polite. There are plenty of English and Japanese books though primarily the latter. If you're interested in stationery, they have lots of quality stuff. If you're looking for anime or game merchandise, they have keychains, acrylic stands, pins, and blind boxes. These are relatively expensive though worth it if you like them. (I really only looked through these.) People looking for Hoyoverse merch: this is for you! As of summer 2025, Alien Stage merch is available but sells fast, so go if you're interested. Would 10/10 recommend for anyone looking for anything. I'm sorry. Is no one going to mention that THIS PLACE THIS VERY PLACE has an entire shelf on TRAVELERS FACTORY stationary?!?!? I could not BELIEVE my good fortune. Nothing else in the store mattered. Nothing. I'm sure other reviews will tell you what this store is about. This is the only place in New Jersey to find Travelers Factory stationary. If you are not familiar, Travelers Factory, founded in Japan, displays Travelers top quality leather cover customizable notebook and stationary. I totally butchered that. There's no way to write the magical wonder of Travelers Factory notebooks. I am currently planning a summer in Japan and I've seen tons on tons of youtube about it. Its top ten stationary in the world and I can't believe I saw these in person. A bit expensive. But I'm so happy I can come here to buy refill notebooks!!! The bookstore itself is unique. The entrance is right across from the food court entrance of Mitsuwa. There's erasable pens, erasable highlighters, Japanese cookbooks, magazines, planners, toys,.... Parking is a nightmare every weekend. Things start to close past 8pm be sure to visit here before then. read more

If you're used to going to the actual Japanese Kinokuniya, I am sorry but you will be disappointed. I drove more than an hour from a hotel I was staying to visit this particular location. It has more English translated Japanese books than actual Japanese books. It also consists of mainly Japanese comics in English. I wanted to purchase the latest books by Miyuki Miyabe. Sadly, the store only had one copy of a hardcover novel with RIPPED cover. Given the nearly $30 price for a book I'll most likely only read it once, it was just not worth it. Moreover, the stationary and gift selection was sad. Not everything from Japan consists of stuffed animals or something with Mt Fuji and cherry blossoms. There's more to Japan than that? I saw a Kurutoga mechanical pencil I wanted but no H 0.5mm pencil refill to go with it. Ugh. Exactly who in the world uses a 2B 0.7mm pencil refill? You like your side of the hand completely blackened? Is that what it is? The store doesn't even really carry anything that uses a 0.7mm pencil refill....... I will not be returning. read more

This review is just for the 2024 staff- their new hires are a little rude, specifically this 5'3 scrawny Caucasian male who I suspect may not be a good fit for their company. The old Japanese ladies and the chubby Japanese guy are great, but they need to get rid of the new guy. The selection of books and figures are good though- 5 stars for that. Located next to the Daiso store and literally a crosswalk away from the Mitsuwa food court/market, this bookstore will immerse you with the selection of books, magazines and stationery with anything Japanese on it. It's respectably sizeable even though it's no match to the real Kinokuniya in Asia (obviously), and it has a big section of Japanese manga/anime translated into English, to cater to the needs of the fans from both sides of the world. I had fun just reading and exploring for more than 1 hour before narrowing down my selection. The only drawback is there's no benches (I just sat on the floor), but since most of the books are sealed anyway, maybe that's the point. I just book hopped from old 1980s Japanese mecharobot series to the art of/comic version of Miyazaki's latest movie, to cute travel books to Japan, to details on ninja methods, to style guides for geishas and how to craft a beautiful ikebana! Prices are Japanese book prices in the US so naturally they don't come as cheap as you want them to be. Great bookstore to peruse and find little gems. read more

There is definitely plenty to see here - from manga to other books to stationary to backpacks to all sorts of stuff. Lots of items are imported from Japan and so the prices are pretty high for many things. The main thing that I disliked about this bookstore is everything is plastic wrapped. While I understand that it's to prevent people from standing around just reading the books or messing things up, I think it's hard to gauge if I want to buy something if I can't even take a browse inside the covers. I wanted to get a Manga but I didn't know what volume I'm on but I couldn't open the manga to see where I was..... This place is located next to the Japanese supermarket, Mitsuwa. I've been to the other location in Manhattan. This location is smaller compared to the Manhattan location but still carries a decent amount of merchandise. The store holds lots of cute trinkets for purchase as well as toys/ figurines of popular anime characters. The majority of the store has lots on Japanese literature, magazines, anime comic books, travel books, DVDs and more. We always come here to take a look to see what's new. I usually grab a cute gift for a friend or see if there is anything of interest for myself. In the back they also have a small stationary section across from the children's books section which is worth taking a look at if you need specific sized pencil leads. read more

I normally order my Japanese novels on Amazon Japan but I decided to check out Kinokuniya since we were shopping at Mitsuwa. I found a book that I wanted to order a long time ago and thought it was a good opportunity to buy it until I saw the sticker price. $22 where it is around $14 on Amazon Japan. Nope, back on the shelf it went. I did expect prices to be higher but not by this much. The selection for Japanese novels at this store is also smaller than the Manhattan location. In a way it's easier to search because there aren't that many shelves to go through. read more

I usually love this location, but on my most recent visit we interacted with one of the staff who treated my partner and I with such disrespect it was honestly appalling. She's an old, short woman with blond hair who yelled at us because THEIR card reader malfunctioned. If you come here, avoid her if possible. I can't really speak about their English selection since I've only bought Japanese books from here. They have a decent amount of books and manga, but you'll definitely have trouble finding some of the rarer books and series. It definitely pales in comparison to the New York location in both size and selection. A young man who was working at the counter insulted me to his coworker when my debit card was declined by another cashier saying "why would you come in without money". He acted like I couldn't hear him even though I was literally 5 feet from him. I didn't know my debit card was low on cash. Very rude and honestly he's always like that. Let me preface this by saying, I have been coming to Kinokuniya for the past 15 years and I normally enjoy my experience here. However, today I experienced some of the worst customer service I have ever had in my life. It came from an incredibly rude Kinokuniya employee, who is an older Japanese woman. I simply approached her and asked, "Excuse me, could you please tell me how this magazine costs?" since most of their magazines are marked with a price. The woman ripped the magazine out of my hands and began berating me while pointing out a very small sign showing their price conversion from Yen to USD. Realizing that I may have interrupted her at a bad time, I said, "Oh ok, I understand," as I attempted to take the magazine back from her and simply end the conversation quickly. As I reached for the magazine, she yanked it away from me and said, "NO! YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND!" and she continued to berate me, rambling on about how I should calculate the conversion and how I needed to take into account the taxes because "THIS IS AMERICA!" This woman was literally yelling at me. This woman obviously has something wrong with her mind, and if I hadn't been so shocked by her rude and abrasive behavior I would have just walked out and let her continue berating thin air. She finally returned the magazine by literally tossing it into my hands. To this woman who is most likely the manager, my question to you, if you ever actually read this is, "How do you believe your behavior is at all acceptable?" If you are so miserable in your life and at your job, you should seriously do something else as you are honestly in the wrong business. Your customer service skills are horrendous and you ruined what is normally an enjoyable experience for me, and it's unfortunate that you represent a company that I normally enjoy. read more

It's smaller than the Kinokuniya in Manhattan. They carry mostly Japanese imported books, stationary, magazines, DVD, & mangas. The English section is small. As for the Japanese magazine section, it's not any smaller than the one in Manhattan. They practically have the same magazines at both locations. If you're in Mitsuwa or live nearby & looking to get some Japanese related items, this place is worth stopping by. read more
