This place is now called Kinship Roasters. Stopped in for a cup of coffee today and was shocked to learn that a 10 ounce cup of coffee with half and half cost me over $5. Note, if you use the kiosk to avoid the line, half and half is referred to as breve and will cost you an extra $1. There is no cow milk, cream or half and half option on the kiosk. I asked the staff and they told me to put notes in, I had to explain that was not an option either. Judging by the crowd at the store, it must be a popular place and they do brisk business - most of which is stay, sit and chat with your coffee. It seemed to be very popular with college age and recent post college persons - I did not see a lot of gray hair in the business (other than mine). Coffee was okay, tends towards more of a medium to light roast. Not my fave. Not sure I want to pay $5 for coffee again - probably won't be back. read more

Used to love coming to Third Wave coffee before they rebranded to Kinship Roasters. Only one barista on shift while a line of people were waiting to get their orders taken. Waited for 20 min on a pour over coffee, and when I asked if it would be ready soon, he dismissed me and continued to work on other drinks ordered after me. Left without getting my PAID for coffee due to feeling overwhelmed and frustrated. No seating, overcrowded, and poor service. I would recommend going to the Muse or any other coffee shop. read more

Just left Third Wave. Pros - staff are very nice. Good atmosphere. Cons - 25 minutes for one drink (which they admittedly made cold instead of hot; I took it anyways). Middle aged woman working the register (the only person working it) left the register for almost 20 minutes while the line of customers lengthened.. I left and she still hasn't returned. Cinnamon rolls are extremely dry. Do not recommend the cinnamon roll if you're expecting an actual cinnamon roll. In conclusion - this place has all the right bones to be successful, but really needs to hire more people. read more

I wasn't sure about this coffee shop because their website made it seem like they only offered bagged ground coffee; however, I knew that they at least offered lattes by looking at their Yelp reviews. I stopped in not expecting too much. As I entered, I thought I must have teleported to Cambridge, Massachusetts due to the stereotypical hipster/college town café vibe. I felt too old to be in there even at the age of 24. Despite their wannabe urban minimalist/artsy decor and acoustic indie music choice, there was no denying the excellent quality of the mocha I ordered. I like to order mochas as my first drink so I can easily compare different coffee places in town, and this was by far the best mocha I've had in Lynchburg. It was sweet (but not overly sweet like when I can tell they use chocolate syrup) with rich-full bodied espresso that came together very smooth and creamy. Though I can't see myself ever sticking around to hang out in this atmosphere (they try way too hard, and it is a bit over the top), I sure will be back for some great coffee to-go! read more

I'm a barista and avid coffee lover and really wanted to like this place. Just wasn't for me maybe? The espresso is pretty bitter but the coffee (which was decent) wasn't the worst part of my experience - I didn't receive great service. I walked in and stood at the counter for several minutes while the two baristas talked with their friends (who had already been served) that were sitting at the counter. Finally another man walked by (their boss, presumably?) and said something letting them know I was waiting. One of the baristas came over and was very evidently unhappy about having to leave his conversation and took my order in a rush. My cappuccino was just ok. This coffee shop is big and has big windows for tons of natural lighting. It's an ideal place to study or spend your Saturday afternoon reading a book. - Drinks are delicious! My friends and I have tried it all- from the regular drip coffee to the matcha lattes to the seasonal drinks. Third Wave coffee doesn't disappoint. - Friendly staff! The folks here are so friendly and patient with us as we try to make a decision. - Not covid safe at all. Unfortunately this is not the place you want to stay for long during a pandemic. Even though the staff wears masks and gloves, not a single customer in here was wearing a mask and there is no social distancing of tables and chairs. The muse and third Wave are definitely my go to. They are just a few miles apart and I live them both equally. They have unique seasonal drinks, I think when I was there they had a butterscotch coffee and another one that was coffee and soda infused. It was amazing I took the whole team out for some bonding and it was a perfect place for that. Great service , amazing lighting and great location. Ah, third wave. It holds a special, nostalgic spot in my heart because it became a go-to in #college. All that to say, the coffee might be even better than the mems. Third Wave truly is as good as it gets. They have plenty of selections on their menu, coffee and otherwise, as well as really tasty baked goods that are consistently good. I come here often and get something different every time. They have very consistently good pourover coffee as they use Seraphims, so it's very precise and exact. Their specialty drinks are always good too, and I'm always trying their seasonal menu items because they always have an elevated and unique flair. I cannot say enough good things about this place. During my recent stay in VA, I was constantly running back and forth between Forest and Virginia Baptist Hospital, and this was such a convenient place to grab one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had. Not to mention one of the coolest and modern interiors I've seen in a coffee shop in a while. Third Wave roasts their own beans in house 3 times a week, so no matter when you go, you're getting the freshest cuppa out there. Nice balance, no bitterness. Just a great flavor. I'm not an expert on all the varieties of beans they roast, so I can't help you there. But their baristas are extremely informed and educated, so I imagine they can answer any question you may have. Pricing is pretty standard, and they have a great variety of more sugary and iced drinks, During the extreme heat wave, I could not stop craving their iced white mochas. They also have a good selection of "swag" you can purchase, including various beans, cold brew coffee to go, and mugs. Third Wave is a pretty good shop to come and get some work done. They have a wide variety of drinks that you can choose from and take a very scientific approach to how they make all their coffees. Being in marketing, I think their social media game is on point and should be the standard for all other Lynchburg shops. The place is the opposite of cozy(see below) on the plus side, the coffee is better than I remember, it holds its own against The Muse, Dublin 3 and The White Hart in that department. My biggest gripe with the place is that it's echoey in there. It sounds like a train station with it's tile walls and minimal furniture. Please add some acoustic foam, rugs and more furniture. Also, it needs shelves or something to divide up the space. I like nooks and crannies, places to be private and work, etc. As it is, everyone can see everyone 100% of the time. There isn't even a place for the baristas to hide. The counter is low, the couches are low too. They've added a couple pieces of furniture since it opened and it's slightly better, but it still has an uninviting feel. read more

Decided to give this coffee shop a try because of their reviews and hype, but I was astoundingly disappointed. I ordered a chai latte with frothed almond milk and it was absolutely terrible. It tasted like sugared water and the milk was just heated up. On top of that it was extremely overpriced considering it was mediocre.
