Part 2 of 2 for W in alphabet series for W is for Westlake Coffee & Cafe. This breaks my current alphabet series of places gone to with my girlfriend from the beginning of our relationship up to Easter 2025, but I had just reviewed Smith Mountain Lake Coffee recently from last 4th of July week visit in 2024 and wanted to compare the two from visiting on the 4th of July itself in 2025 here. Westlake Coffee & Cafe was a bit of a mixed bag for me and perhaps more of a 3.5 stars, but I'm rounding up in this case as I'm giving some benefit of the doubt and some things exceeded expectations. Also, a prior Yelp reviewer essentially said great sandwiches, nice staff, etc., what more could you ask for, and only gave 3-stars; never stated any reason why it was a mediocre 3-stars, so another reason I'm rounding to 4-stars. Also, I gave SML Coffee 3-stars, and I wanted to distinguish that Westlake Coffee & Cafe was superior to me. My girlfriend & I were staying at her parents' home around 4th of July 2025 and wanted to eat out for lunch. Lunch options are a bit limited, but we saw this online, menu, reviews, & seemed like a decent choice. My g/f's mom warned us that they are very slow, so have your patience. I said I know I read that online could take 30 minutes. Also, the portions are big and might consider splitting sandwich. When we arrived, I ordered a chicken salad sandwich & g/f got a turkey caprese both on sourdough bread. We figured we'd eat half of ours & switch to try each others. Also, I said we could split a large Caramel Latte, but it seems like I was charged 70 cents more than the posted price. My g/f believes that it was a 4th tier not on the menu. $5.25 small, $5.75 medium, $6.45 large, & not printed on the menu was a 4th tier Extra Large as it does say Extra Large on the receipt. This extra 70 cent discrepancy bugged me, but I'm going to give them the benefit of doubt per what my g/f thinks. The woman cashier was cordial, but wasn't quite as nice as Smith Mountain Coffee. I asked for water while we were waiting to another person, which I interacted with 2 staff members, the one I asked & one who handed me the water, who were friendlier. As for the wait time, this exceeded our expectations of the long 20-30 minute wait, it was more like 10-15 minutes, and while that's not great, I was pleasantly surprised when the food & drink was ready. The quality of the iced latte was far superior to the drink I got at SML Coffee. Huge win to Westlake on that! The sandwiches were better than the wrap I got at SML too. The sandwiches use Boar's Head Meats & cheeses. The chicken salad sandwich was great, and my g/f Turkey Caprese was solid too. As it turns out, we both liked what our original choice better than the other, but both of us like both. This is a small place with very limited seating, so better to take to go if it makes sense, but it's nicely decorated with comfortable seating. Also, the original cashier was friendlier at the end. She might've been slightly stressed with orders & our couple of questions. Overall, in spite of a couple of negatives, we'd return when down here. read more

Stopped in while visiting friends at Smith Mountain Lake and was disappointed. We paid $9 for two large black coffees, which would have been fine if the coffee had been good--but unfortunately it was some of the worst coffee we've had in a long time. We enjoy supporting local businesses, but for the price, we expected a much better cup. Hopefully this was just an off day. read more

The hours of operation on Friday say 7-4. We show up around 7:15 the lights are on but they don't look fully open yet, the door is locked and we knock, the barista inside looks at us and turns around and goes back to her business. We stand there for a few more minutes and then leave read more

We've been to this place a few times over the years while visiting SML. The food is always delicious and the coffee is fresh, there is a small seating area inside and there is outside seating when the weather is nice, but the service is painfully slow. If you don't have 30 minutes to wait, you should probably go somewhere else. We stopped by this past Saturday and ordered both food and drinks to take out back to the house for family and we waited 20 minutes for the coffees and 30 minutes for the food. read more

If you want some decent coffee and have about 30 minutes to kill then this is the place for you. If you are in a hurry then keep driving. Be prepared to wait a good while, the service is VERY slow. read more

Service was very slow on a Sunday morning just before Christmas. So slow that when my order came WITH onions (I specifically ordered without) I ate it anyway. We were a party of three and hungry. I wasn't going to wait another 15 minutes for a corrected one or perhaps the onions taken off and given back to me. The coffee left a bit to be desired as well. This is an adorable little cafe with great coffee! The sandwiches were great, and they aren't pre-made so they can be customized. This was the perfect stop for a light lunch while I was traveling and recovering from sickness. Delicious toasted bread and a fresh turkey sandwich. The service was great: friendly and quick! They need to make their signage a little more obvious outside though! We drove past it initially! read more

Have been in many times and the service is just not good over all, takes 20 minutes to get a coffee and 30 minutes for food. Today I went in for coffee and I noticed a baby crying in the food prep area and asked about that. The owner said it was hers ha ha. Who has a small baby in a food prep area, I don't want a baby near my food and would think the health department would agree. Staff is not friendly and frankly I'll never go back. Called in an order for breakfast wrap, they had it ready in 5 minutes! Drive thru is convenient...and it was REALLY tasty, nice portion for the price. Most importantly, everyone there is super friendly. Thanks Westlake, keep up the great work! read more

I was visiting my girlfriend and her family out in Virginia and I was definitely jetlagged and dire need of a pick me up. We wanted to find a good coffee shop but not necessarily a chain. My girlfriend drove us to CJS. It was really warm and inviting with a lot of different coffee's to choose from. I met the owner he was very hospitable. I got an iced cold brew with cinnamon it was absolutely fantastic. The coffee is very high-quality and I believe made in small batches. In addition they have a donut and bakery section to die for. There was no line in a really easy parking but if you're super lazy you can go through the drive-through which is also kind of cool. I definitely recommend stopping by CJ's for a donut and some of their cold brew over going to any chain if you're in town!! We even rreturnedthe next day to try some more delicious coffee. I believe they also make deliveries. CJ's is very high-quality definitely check it out. read more

My friend and I visited this coffee shop on our lake trip. The staff was cold and not friendly to us and our iced lattes were watery, fake tasting, and bland. There were also coffee grounds in our drinks. We could've made better coffee at home. The atmosphere inside the cafe is also cramped and cluttered. Will not be returning. read more

Stopped on a whim due to someone saying this was great. The food was a bit bland no real flavor and was missing ingredients that were listed on the menu. I ordered the veggie wrap that was missing olives and red onions for sure, feta cheese was more like mozzarella cheese and it lacked any flavor. the roast beef sandwich had the strong taste of horseradish and no other flavor. The ice tea taste like water no real tea flavor. Would not recommend and would not stop again. $26 for 2 sandwiches and drinks. read more

The burrito was soooooo good. Hit the spot and was big. Everything thing else we got was fairly standard (breakfast sandwiches and donuts). We weren't a big fan of the bagel, but we are picky with those. It was the breakfast we liked most on the trip. Covid- they have a drive thru. Been here over the years when it was CJs and was excited for the new ownership. But nope - still slow service. Not enough employees to keep up with drive thru, call in orders, and walk ins. Came when no one was here and it was still 25 minutes to get a drink and a wrap. Quality of food is so low; there is no real chef or cook in the kitchen. My breakfast burrito included cold, shredded cheese, a microwaved egg, and a cold wrap from Kroger's. It's just sad and weird. I really want to support local businesses, but this one has always been sad and continues to have low standards. Just go to Bagel and I for a decent bagel sandwich and fast service instead. read more

Ordered a breakfast croissant sandwich that had been put in a panini press and/or smashed on a griddle and burned. First of all, I've never had a croissant sandwich of any kind that was toasted. Part of the wonderfulness of a croissant is its soft, buttery, flaky goodness. Certainly not toasted let alone burned. Terrible sandwich and a total waste of money! Really miss the old CJs! This is a small cafe, and it is never really all that busy. You can sit inside or go outside where they have a few tables. I have been here only a few times, and my first experience was slightly better than my second. I thought the clerks were pleasant and friendly. The drive-through is convenient. Once, I placed an order at the drive-through, and it took the clerk about 5 minutes to make the meal. Evidently, she was the only one working. There were 2 cars behind me. I enjoyed the coffee. It was good. The danishes were okay, but a little dry. On one visit, I was craving a biscuit for breakfast. They only had bagels, croissants, kaiser, and toast. I got a Cali wrap that had bacon, eggs, pepper jack, spinach, and avocado. It was neatly packaged and tasted just okay to me, but not really a favorite. It didn't have much flavor. I don't think they added spices. Some extra sauces, peppers, and onions would've been nice. The small wrap (maybe 6 inches or less) and coffee cost almost $10, which I thought was expensive. read more

My wife and I popped by CJ's on the way to the SML State Park. I didn't know what to expect but when I sat down at a bench to enjoy my turkey bacon sandwich, it was colossal and delicious. The staff here is super nice and accommodating - they worked to bring our order outside quickly. The white chocolate pumpkin spice frappe and iced coffee were terrific as well. Don't settle for less in Westlake for lunch, this place is legit. read more

Went into to CJ's for a quick to go lunch before heading back home from SML- my bf got a spicy grilled chix wrap and I had the pesto chix wrap. They very delicious, refreshing, and good sized wraps- also came w choice of chips which was a nice addition. All the bakery items looked appetizing as well. read more

A charming place for lunch. We had the veggie wrap and the BLT. The vegetables were crisp and fresh and the dressing was tangy and perfectly complemented the hummus and feta. The BLT was served with avacado-a different take, but very tasty as well. The marble rye was excellent. A huge bonus for having decaf iced coffee!! The employees were super friendly! I tried a bacon egg and cheddar on an everything bagel and was very pleased. The bagel was so soft and everything seemed very fresh. I wish the everything bagel was more heavily coated in the poppyseeds, sesame seeds, etc. but regardless, the quality was excellent. The prices were very affordable too. I have never had such a horrible experience!!!!!! I would like to preface by saying, I only tried it because of the positive yelp reviews. When I arrived the girls at the front counter couldn't stop talking to each other long enough to take my order. When they finally stopped talking long enough to help me, they acted extremely put out and annoyed that I asked for menu advice. I finally placed my order of a, VERY pricey, bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel and a large coffee and wanted to sit down and wait. The floors and tables were covered in crumbs, it just felt dirty. While waiting I got to hear even more of the girls incredibly personal and inappropriate conversation. After about 20 mins I got my food and coffee. I had a conversation with someone in the shop about the "homemade" bagels who informed me they were nothing more than FROZEN bagels! Why did I pay so much for frozen bagels?! The coffee was cold and tasted reheated. All in all I was just very disappointed. They cook on a griddle with their hair down and no gloves on, seems gross.
