UPDATE #2 Disappointed by the likely truth of the negative stereotype The written mechanic's report (see photo) - that no one reviewed w/ me - said, "RR trailing arm bushing coming apart LR starting to as well". Odd, never heard a sound from the rear as is symptomatic. Went to my usual mechanic for this & another issue. We looked together (as ever) & both bushings are in fine working order. Maybe the mechanic meant a different part? Or someone else's bushings are failing? Research shows women pay ~$5k more than men over the life of their cars. Add the amount men are overcharged & hoodwinked out of, etc.. & that comes to more than a few boat payments. *** UPDATE I was called in the morning, saving me a trip & they refunded my money. I expect remaining vouchers like mine will be honored without challenge through 12/13/24. I appreciate the kind prompt, fair, kind, response greatly, and am reassured all is back to normal @ Kirby Firestone. I like to frequent small local family owned businesses, with the hope they thrive better when not working for THE MAN, and bonus, they often have friendly helpful employees with low turnover who occasionally remember you ;-) I write reviews primarily in hopes of ameliorating the issue and making sure nothing of the sort should happen again. Only as a desperate measure, are my reviews meant to warn others, so at least they don't have to go through what I have. I keep trying to lower my expectations so I'm not disappointed, but I can't seem to get them low enough :-/ *** I have no issue with the mechanics, or with Josh behind the counter, but today, there was a different guy @ the counter. I've been coming here for years w/ oil change coupons & always been satisfied with the service. I even bought oil changes for friends the last time they went on sale. Today, I came in for an oil change and diagnostics- both covered by the voucher (see photo), as seen on their website. Upon my return, I was offered a bill (see photo) that took $25 off an oil change and charged $153.69 for the diagnostic. He said he saved me $ by only charging 1 hour. I expected to pay a $3 oil disposal fee and apparently was also responsible for the cost of the oil filter (reminder: ask their $ and maybe bring one next time). I was told there was ONLY a coupon for $25 off an oil change, despite presenting the voucher for the oil change, tire rotation, full inspection and diagnostic on paper and online, exp. 12/13/24. He then said my 2008 Prius takes 0w30 oil, which is not stock oil and per the fine print is $20 off. I found this surprising because no one has ever mentioned non-stock oil or 0w30 to me in my years of owning this car. He shrugged and bilked me. Upon returning to my car, I thought 0w30, that's VERY odd, and then noticed on the invoice, 5w30 was billed. Back to the counter. Oh, he says he only charged me for 5w30, (so generous). Then why was I charged $24.95 for the oil change (do their oil filters cost $21.95)? He walks me to my car giving me a lesson on different kinds of oil, as I'm telling him, the owner's manual says to use 5w30, he's still talking about viscosity and lighter vs. darker color. Under the hood he goes, comes out with the dipstick, shows it to me, yep, looks darker than 0w30, and hey, btw they write RIGHT ON the OIL CAP 5W30. He starts to walks back to the building, when I ask, wait, but, if I received stock oil (5w30 is stock, right?) why was I charged for more than the disposal fee and filter for the oil change? I already paid for the oil change voucher, I didn't feel like paying twice. His response: Talk to Josh tomorrow. Sounds GREAT! I know Josh, he's always been helpful. Never had any trouble with coupons with him. So, fingers crossed, I get to invest more time and effort and frustration to try and settle a simple oil change and diagnostic I'm being billed for twice. How many oil changes could have been done in the time I'm spending fixing this SNAFU? Hmm... the guy behind the counter didn't even mention the mechanics's note that the RR trailing arm bushing is coming apart and LR starting as well. OR that the fender distortion was damaging the tire! THAT information actually would have been HELPFUL new info, compared to what he said about the car (explained the diagnostic codes they could do nothing about), especially since I PROVIDED the diagnostic codes & had already both been told what they meant & I researched them. Horrible experience working with this Firestone. Firstly, they quoted me an absurdly high price for their recommended service and upon negotiating the quote they were able to decrease the price immediately. This screams scam. Secondly, I paid almost $200 for a diagnostic, far over market value in this area. Thirdly, after bringing my car into the dealership for the service, it became apparent that Firestone had provided me with an inaccurate diagnostic of the issue. After completing service with the dealership, all problems were fixed with my car proving that Firestone had been incorrect with their diagnostic. I tried to get a refund but they would not admit their mistake. Horrible experience, do not come here. Go anywhere else for car troubles. read more

Some service businesses just don't get it. I use Firestone back home and figured I'd visit the shop near campus. My daughter's car had warning lights that I wanted checked out. As I pulled up, I noticed a few cars in the service bays, and overall things seemed quiet. I walked into an empty lobby but for two employees who just looked at me. After giving a good morning to them another guy comes out of the back, looking all deliverance, and tells me, "I won't be able to help you with that today". It takes 5 minutes to connect the computer to a car for an error code, so clearly, there was some other reason Help was refused (eg not a townie, not white, not whatever). Ridiculous and no idea how they can be part of the Firestone brand! I left and found an advanced auto down the street and had codes read right away. I would give a negative star if available. read more

Fantastic service. I've gone in a few times for both simple and serious auto work and they did a great job. I wish I had a Kirby's auto where I am now since I moved. Definitely give them a shot if you need auto work done! Be prepared to pay unexpected amount. Changed just 5 studs with them (not whole wheel hub) which cost $20 max. Paid almost $400. At first they asked to pay even bigger bill. But then I told them it's just studs not wheel assembly. They just ripped me off. Overpriced Did not recommend at all. read more

Took a wheel rim and tire in to be mounted. Very nice person took my info. I was in no hurry so picked the wheel up the next day. Got a call shortly after drop off asking if I knew the tire was not new, which I did. Later call told me the tire was ready. When picking up, the service fee was slightly reduced, which was nice. I was totally disappointed with Kirby's Firestone. I bought one of their coupons on CiSaves for a year of oil changes and some additional maintenance savings. A month ago, I went in for an oil change and battery replacement, no problems, decent speed and service. Saturday, not a month after getting the work done, my check engine light and battery light come on. I take it in same day. They tell me my alternator is bad and so is the EGR valve, estimated $750 to fix. I called them Monday for an update on when everything will be done, no update. Then I get a call at 2pm, saying my car is ready. Then I called them back, and only then do they mention that "something is wrong with my drivers side window" and that in fact, it will no longer stay up. I told them it NEVER has had a problem staying up. I asked them to fix the problem, but they said no. They offered to wedge it "when they have time", and then had the audacity to quote me almost 500 dollars to fix the window regulator. If you want your car to come out with more tape on it than it went in with, then by all means, take your car here, but if you're looking for honest service, don't waste your time. read more

As a young Asian female, I often feel a certain dread that I'm being taken advantage of when it comes to car issues (maybe I watched too many "20/20" horror stories about abusive businesses). However, Kirby's Firestone is a true diamond in the rough--one of the few consistently honest, competent auto services I've had the fortune to find. The people who handle customer service are very knowledgeable and straightforward in terms of life-threatening issues vs. inconveniences that can wait. If you're a UIUC student, keep an eye out for Kirby's Firestone employees selling special promo packages at the beginning of fall semester. Last year, I purchased a package (costing around $75) that entitled me to oil changes that averaged $12 per visit, in addition to lots of discounts for various services. It was an undeniably smart investment. I never worried about checking my bank account before an oil change--I just showed up, presented my coupon, and had the work done without any fuss or aggressive pressure to buy other products. By comparison, I'd shell out nearly $70 for every oil change at Jiffy Lube, where they always threatened that my car was on the brink of disaster unless I replaced a dozen things. I also have positive experiences from the times I've asked Kirby's for repairs: - My Chevrolet has a common ignition security issue that the dealership offered to fix for about $700 (I almost threw up). When I took in the car for an oil change, I asked Kirby's for their price and they estimated $300. Woohoo! They worked with a local locksmith to make new keys and parts, and my car was finished the same day. - Recently, my car developed weird "clunking" sounds. Kirby's identified the issue and fixed it. When I picked up the car, I noticed some additional rattling noises. I'd usually hesitate to bring it back since I've been burned by other mechanics in the past. ("Mo' problems, mo' money.") However, as soon as I returned, the mechanics took it into the garage, looked at it again, and had me on my way in 30 minutes with a happy car--and no additional costs tacked on. read more

Last year, I went to Firestone to get a new tire and had an awesome experience there. They were fast and to the point, the way I like it. If I had a good experience in the past with a business, I am pretty loyal to that business and most likely to refer friends to that business. I found a flat tire yesterday and luckily, I was able to drive my car up to Firestone. They were very busy and asked me to dropped my car off overnight so they could check it tomorrow morning. I didn't think that was a problem so I dropped my key and left my car there for the night. Today I called them 10am to see if they checked my car. An anonymous employee picked up the phone and said that they would call me back in a "few" minutes because their manager was occupied. I was expecting the call to be in 10-15 minutes at least. I had to call them back half an hour later. When I did, they said they were checking it "right now." They told me that my car would be finished before they close at noon. I got to the place 15 minutes before closing time and spend more than 10 minutes after their closing time waiting. The wait wasn't what bothered me. I DON'T MIND WAITING AT PUBLIC PLACES IN GENERAL BUT I DO REALLY MIND THE QUALITY OF SERVICE I AM RECEIVING AND THE JOB BEING DONE CORRECTLY. I am not expecting some VIP service here, I just want my car fixed, and I want to be able to trust that the car I am driving out of the auto shop is now safe to drive. What really aggregates me is that when I was on the highway, another tire blew out and I am currently cruising with a spare tire (the new tire was just perfectly fine). I understand that auto places might take advantage of me because I am a female and assume I don't know much but here's the thing: In order to receive that usual good service from a good auto shop, typically the mechanics are expected to check the air pressure on each tire after they finish placing a new tire. It makes sense, you've had the other tires for awhile and you just got a brand new tire to replace the fourth. Of course, the air pressure would be different. I mean you just stick a tire pressure gauge four times and that's it. How hard can that be? It seems like the simple work done on my car was RUSHED AND HALF-ASSED before closing. Thank you, Firestone Men =/ Not only did they risk my safety, but they lost a loyal customer and future customers once they read this review. Will definitely recommend to everyone. I was looking foe tire replacements and the people there talked to me very nicely. Later I found another source where I can get cheaper tires so decided only going there for installation. They behaved as politely as before. Price is very competitive and job was done quickly. I don't know how we lucked out finding this place, but I'm very happy we did. On a cold morning, the tire pressure in our rental car suddenly took a turn for the worse. Within five minutes, a cheerful guy here checked out the situation, remedied it, and warned us to keep an eye on one particular tire for the rest of our trip. For free. Had a blow-out on I-57 early Saturday morning on my way back to Chicago from Mississippi after driving all night. I replaced the blowout with the space-saving spare tire, but needed to get a new tire. This place was one of the few tire places that was listed with an opening time of 7:30 am. I called at 7:25 and they answered the phone. I explained what happened and they said to come right on in, and that they would take care of me right away. When I got there, I could tell that they had other people already waiting to have service, but because of my circumstance, where I needed to get to Chicago on time, they took care of me right away. I had already known that all the tires needed to be replaced, so when they also mentioned that the tires were worn, it was a confirmation of my previous mechanic's estimation. They provided me with three options of good, better, and best tire packages. I opted for the middle package which seemed to be a competitive price for a good set of tires. I asked where I could get breakfast while I waited. I came back an hour later and everything was done. They even stored the spare tire away. I may never be here again, but I felt compelled to note that they were friendly, fast, and professional. read more

These guys are THE BEST. As a college student with very limited knowledge on cars, I'm always afraid I'm being tricked into buying more than I need. However, I can say that I have never felt that way here. They are more than reasonable with their pricing and honest about what they believe your car needs. When I've gotten multiple quotes about services, theirs is always the lowest. They are also really flexible when it comes to you picking up your car or waiting to perform services on it. I had my last car towed to their lot after it broke down. Once I decided I was going to donate it instead of getting the repairs, they never pressured me to move my car off of their lot. It was about $40 to store my car there for two weeks, and they even took my liscence plates off for me for free. I will never go anywhere else for as long as I live in this area. read more

Also, every time I took my car in, something mysteriously seemed to break that warranted 300-500 dollars in repairs. Skip the hassle, and take your car to KCM around the corner. read more

During my time in Champaign, I brought my car to this spot after reading the good reviews. My vehicle was making a squeaking sound underneath. Turned out to be my muffler - it was rusting and peeling. I'll say that they were very quick. They were able to get me in on the same day. I dropped it off later in the day (~4pm) and it was finished first thing the next morning. They were sensitive to my time needs and said they could have it done before work the following morning if needed. I appreciated it. However, the work was faulty. Applying a new muffler should not be an overly-complicated task for a full-time mechanic. However, shortly thereafter the vehicle was making a loud vibrating sound. At this point I had already relocated back to Chicago and brought the car to my trusted mechanic in town. "Whoever put the muffler on had no idea what they were doing." It had been applied incorrectly. Thanks for the quick service, but I'd recommend others use a mechanic that will do the job right. I wouldn't go back. read more

I really wish there was a no star option. This has to be the most dishonest company I have ever dealt with. I drive a cheap eco friendly car back and forth to work everyday, so I don't put miles on my family vehicle. I slid into a sign which broke the control arm and bent my rim. Total cost for everything was about $1150. I was told I could pay over time (this is a week before Christmas). NOPE complete lie they charged me the entire amount. Even though they admitted to their dishonesty, they never offered to rectify their mistake. Stated they don't have access to that kind of $ right now. I will never take any vehicle back there, and suggest you don't either. I just don't understand how you can flat out lie to your customers, and then refuse to return their calls. read more

I want to share an anecdote about my experience with this place. Let me first state that the incident I'm about to describe happened more than a decade ago. I have no problem with this business, then or now. I took my car in to get winterized (oil change, radiator flush/fill, check hoses & belts) one morning. I was told that the car would be done by the end of the day. I called them at the end of the day and they said that they'd need it overnight and I could pick it up at noon the next day. I made arrangements for a ride home and a ride to work the next morning, which was no big deal. I would have preferred that they called me rather than my having to call them to find out, but that's okay. I called them the next morning and they told me I could pick up my car at noon. I got dropped off at noon and caught a glimpse of my car before heading into the office. They handed me the bill and I checked it over. I handed them my credit card and they took it into another room to run it (this was a while ago and they still had a mechanical machine for taking the imprint of credit cards). They handed me the receipt and a pen and then stated "Before you sign that, there's something I've gotta tell you". That's an "interesting" line and my blood pressure shot up. But their next statement topped that. "Your car is still drivable, but ..." {and my blood pressure climbed another few notches} It seems that the mechanic working on my car did not realize that my car would start while in gear and had managed to run my car off of their lift and into their garage door. There were scratches on the hood, windshield and the front area of the roof, but the damage was all cosmetic and did not my ability to drive the vehicle safely. I'm fairly sure my reaction surprised them as I simply burst out laughing. As it turns out, seven or eight months previous, I had the misfortune to be on interstate 90 when an uncovered gravel truck entered the highway in front of me at 70 mph. This effectively gravel blasted the front of my car before I could get around and past him. So, the incident at Kirby's just meant that my car would have to have its hood and roof repainted and front windshield repaired for the second time that year. My thought at the time was "keep this up and this car will never rust". They paid the repair estimate making my winterizing cost them more than it had cost me. I have no issue with this business myself. Everyone makes mistakes. They admitted to the incident and paid the repair estimate without complaint or hesitation. read more

The level of service they provide makes me feel like they really care about my comfort and safety. I felt like I could trust them, they had fair comparable prices and gave me a ride to work. Took my car in for an oil change here. They called me and said they recommended a replacement belt, I told them to go ahead and do it. I then realized I had had a new belt put on just last year at a different shop, so I called them back and told them this. The guy I was talking to, Joe, told me he would take a look at it and call me back. Of course, when he called me back he told me that he would NOT recommend a new belt and that it was fine. I would've wasted $70 on something I didn't even need had I not caught them. If you do go here, I would be very cautious in agreeing to any other things they would recommend you fixing or replacing. read more

We (my fiance and I) started going to this service center because they were advertising a package of services for fairly cheap. I have had several basic services done (oil change, tire rotation, etc) done there and it's always timely and at a reasonable price. When my check engine light turned on one day I turned to Kirby's. They very quickly assessed the situation, fixed the problem, and returned my car to me by that evening. Being a person that admittedly knows very little about cars, these guys never try to swindle me. They let me know of all the things I could possibly address, but also fairly let me know which are the ones that I don't need to bother doing. read more

Bought new tires from them. Less than one year later I brought them back to have them balanced and rotated they claimed I needed new tires. I drove my car home and the tires were shaking really bad and way worse than when I took them in. I took it to another tire place and they said all the tire weights had been taken off and the tites were still in fair condition. Beware of these employees they are scandalous! read more
