I recently visited Kirin King on a Saturday night. Overall, the food was decent, but nothing that really stood out. We ordered the gyoza, crab rangoon, and a couple of sushi rolls. Everything was good, just not particularly memorable. One thing that was a bit disappointing was the rotating sushi bar, it wasn't in service, which felt odd for a busy weekend night and kind of took away from the experience. Service was okay. Our server was friendly, but disappeared for long stretches, and it seemed like they might have been understaffed since there weren't many other servers on the floor. Not a bad spot by any means, but with a few improvements, especially getting the sushi bar running and tightening up service - it could be a much better experience! read more

Stopped by Kirin King for their hotpot and bbq option. The restaurant needs some work done to it. We got seated next to the bathroom. The booth we were in was slanted and very uncomfortable to sit in. You pick all the food you want to order from a tablet. The dishes were brought out pretty quickly. The hotpot broth was not very good at all. No effort in the broth whatsoever. The chicken broth was very watered down. I wouldn't recommend it. The spicy broths do have a kick to it. But still not very good. Watered down spicy broth. The BBQ part of the meal was okay. Nothing stood out where l'd want to come back again for it. Most of the meat options are a hit or miss. Some did not taste as fresh. A couple of the marinated ones were good on the grill. The grill burns very easily after a couple times of cooking. If you live in the area, this is a decent beginners place if you've never experienced hotpot or bbq before. I would highly recommend going to a Korean bbq place if you want good table top bbq. I came for lunch on a Friday I ordered fried gyoza as an appetizer. The dumpling was very thick. Maybe I'm used to having goyza be on the thinner side for the dumpling wrapper. For my main meal, I had their lunch special chicken with string green beans. It came with wonton soup and the choice of rice. The wonton soup was good. The chicken with green beans was very salty it could barely eat it. I ended up sending it back and getting a beef and broccoli instead and the sauce tasted a little off to me, luckily not salty lol. I don't think I would be back for the Chinese, maybe the sushi or the hot pot but I was not impressed. This is my updated review of Kirin King. My buddy asked me if I wanted to grab lunch today and I said of course! He said, "how is Kirin King?" I said honestly I was not impressed but I haven't tried the KBBQ and Hot Pot side of the restaurant yet and he said you wanna try? I said sure. So off we went to try Kirin King's Korean BBQ and Hot Pot. The server sat us down and gave us a quick run down of what to do and how to order. She hands us a tablet and says you can order your food here. For Hot Pot, we went with the Tom Yum and Shenzhen Hot Pot base soup. For protein, we went with tripe and jumbo shrimp. And for veggies we went with mushrooms and qual eggs. For Korean BBQ we went with short ribs, bulgogi, brisket, baby octopus, and calamari. Yes this was our lunch.... I've never sat down at a hot pot/kbbq table before and boy I was missing out. It's so cool to do both things in front of you and to do it in Crystal Lake, IL. I say that because these types of restaurants are few and far between and you never find these kinds of restaurants in the area. So bonus points for Kirin King for being the exception. Once we ordered the food, there's a cold bar that we can walk up to get our side dishes aka bonchon. The kimchi and pickled cucumbers were delicious! It was cold and crispy and crunchy which is what you would want. Pro Tip: They have Kbbq sauce and minced garlic at the cold bar. Make sure you add this to your kbbq while your cooking for more flavor :) First up was the hot pot part of the meal. They serve you big bowls that are sat on the table and they start to boil in front of you. It's pretty cool. I tried both broth base and both were delicious. The shrimp and tripe was good as well. Then there was the main event, the KBBQ part of the meal. The short rib was OK and usually when going to an authentic KBBQ place the short ribs are usually the best part of the meal but not here. For us the best was the baby octopus. Man that was so good that we reordered it again. Everything else was just your standard good decent tasting protein. Overall, I'm glad I gave Kirin King another try and their Hot Pot and KBBQ slaps in a good way! For lunch it was $24.99 for all you can eat. And for us to have the type of meal we had it was a great meal, let me rephase that, an excellent meal for the price. I can't wait to bring back the family and do it again and I applauded Kirin King for bringing this to Crystal Lake. If you read my previous review you know I had an issue with the service here. And it seems this was fixed with our new server. She could actually understand and speak English! I'd suggest you give this a try for yourself. read more

Horrible service. Talking purely from the perspective of a DoorDash driver that is picking up food for a customer, I experienced some of the worst service from the front desk crew I've ever seen. The ignorance and rude behavior was already bad. When I walked in, someone sitting in a chair stormed out saying they hate the place. I thought that was a bit extreme, but after waiting 10 minutes for the slightest acknowledgment of my presence, they continued to look past me and treat me like nothing. I went up to the counter and asked if this is a pickup spot, and the guy cutting the seafood gave me a mean glare and said "wait a moment." He then said nothing to me after that and I proceeded to wait 20 minutes just to receive any sort of acknowledgment. I have eaten the hot pot, which was fabulous. Urge you to try it out. So many options to eat and sauces/spices - WOW. But wait - I went back to try the Chinese - holy cow! Absolutely the BEST Hot and Sour soup I have ever had (and I eat Chinese at least 2 to 4 times a month. And Hot & Sour soup every time). And I have been eating Chinese for 50+ years. While I have not eaten often enough to try all of their dishes, but the Mongolian Beef knocked my socks off. And the Sweet and Sour sauce has more than a hint of Mandarin Oranges which is out of this world great. The service is very good- however, they do not speak English well, and you have to be patient. But worth it. When I had a slight problem with a dish, they fixed it properly and fast. And they seem to care abut their customers. All in all, this is outstanding. This place is incredible! You have the choice of doing hot pot, Korean barbecue and sushi Ayce in one meal which is so much fun to do for a date night, family meal, out with friends, etc I went with friends we sampled a lot of stuff ie ordered 1 of just about everything and split it amongst ourselves. Seemed the best way to go theres a great variety of stuff. It was a very fun dinner. The Korean barbecue was a fun experience you order dishes and cook it at your table. Fun style and great for dinner and entertainment, My favorite dining experience was the hot pot no clue why I enjoyed it the most but it was great to dine over a boiling pot of soup and just dip and cook things while having conversation with people. It was relaxing and delicious. Ayce sushi is my go to at any japanese/Asian fusion restaurant its one of my favorite styles, you sit relax order a roll and couple dishes here n there all the while talking with who your with. We made reservations and we were seated quickly...unfortunately it was downhill from there. Our server took 10 minutes before she had a chance to even come over to our table. The host staff just kept adding more tables for her to serve she couldn't keep up. Our drink orders were wrong, my daughter got soup but no else received anything...It was NOT our servers fault but after 1 hour and 20 mins, we put $25 on the table and walked out. We came to this newly opened restaurant on Rt 14 which is apparently in its soft opening. The parking is plentiful and on the left and behind the restaurant. When we came in the first door on the left, it looks like a bar area with a stage-like area. The inside is nicely decorated with a lot of wood tones. There wasn't anyone in the front so we walked to the next room and ran into staff. It seems like if you want primarily sushi they will seat you in the room with the rotary sushi and if you're just getting Chinese food you're seated in the room on the left. We came to the sushi rotary room, and I had ordered the Beijing duck appetizer which they unfortunately had run out of (which I wasn't told this until 40 min of waiting), so then ordered a fried calamari app which was good. I had ordered a pork noodle dish which was good. My fiancé got the All You Can Eat sushi for dinner which includes the rotary sushi. We noticed that most of the sushi on there probably had been left there for awhile - many of them were still on the conveyer belt over the 1.5 hrs we were there including some fresh fish that probably shouldn't be out for too long. When they did put out the fresh ones, those were the ones that we grabbed. The octopus sashimi was chewy and rubbery but I'm unsure for how long it was on there, but their eel nigiri was delicious. Unfortunately they don't seem to have enough staff, although they were friendly. They don't have any music playing in the background and the main sound is the squeaking of the rotary belt. My fiancé never actually got the right sushi rolls he had ordered, at first he got a plate that was entirely wrong then which we mentioned to them, and at the second plate about 2 out of 5 he had ordered was correct according to the menu sheet. He was so hungry we didn't correct it again. Unless there's significant improvement in the service, we probably won't be coming back. There is a 20% off the whole meal currently. read more

You can choose the hot pot and Korean BBQ side, or the sushi side of the restaurant. Brought the family and had the all you can eat hot pot and BBQ and there was something for all of us. We each tried a different broth (original, miso, spicy szechuan, and tom yum) and to be honest they were all delicious. We ordered a wide variety of proteins, dumplings, noodles, and veg for the pots and there were some standouts. The enoki mushrooms were really good, along with both dumplings, giant head on shrimp, blue crab, and the udon noodles. I was most excited for the BBQ but to be honest I liked the hot pot the most. The short ribs were good, but the beef has kind of a strange texture. The pork belly was good, but the marinated chicken and beef were the best. Next time I'd skip the beef skewers, salmon, quail eggs, and baby octopus. But we'll definitely be back. read more

The hot pot that my 4 other guests had was disappointing and disgusting. FYI ...Don't get the chicken . It looked like it was freezer burned and rubbery . Ok. Wow. I'm a proud veteran of Korean bbq and hotpot. I've been to quite a few from Chicago to Madison. The individual hotpots and the center grill were a perfect combo for the carnivore husband and me who loves a spicy broth with tons of fish cakes and veggies. The server was friendly and speedy. Ordering on the tablet made things simple (except for choosing from all of the amazing options!) the marinated pork belly was spectacular. If you know pork belly, then you know. The bulgogis were great too. The broths were flavorful and made all of the goodies we simmered take on an amazing spice. Somehow the fish cakes were some of the best I've ever had-fresh or frozen! I typically hate to give bad reviews. If I don't like something, I just don't go back. However, I believe there is a food safety issue going on at this establishment. While the pho tasted good (albeit the steak was overcooked) and the service was prompt and polite, when I had finished eating I asked to use the restroom. The gentleman pointed towards the door and when I went in the light was off. I did some hunting and turned it on just to watch two roaches scatter. I was grossed out, but I know that many restaurants have these pests, so I still was not going to say anything. That was until the brutal food poisoning I've been suffering with all day. Found out about kirin King from a Groupon promotion. We decided to go this evening and was pleasantly surprised. The menu is more than extensive and we chose to have the hot pot Korean barbecue and sushi for the all you can eat option. Food came out quick and was fresh and tasty. Our waiter said that the restaurant has only been open for about a month and a half so understandably some quirks will have to be worked out. namely, the sauce bar lacked a lot of ingredients. The Restaurant seemed empty only because of its cheer size. Decor seemed confused and halfway done otherwise ordering was conveniently done from an iPad and the price is more than fair. The base for the hot pots we wished had some description and were a little disappointed there wasn't a beef broth available only tofu and chicken. Service 3/5 we had never been here before and when we told our waiter that he told us "okay, you just order." We didn't understand the iPad style of ordering at first but figured it out on our own. This place is absolutely magical. Food and ingredients are so delicious and above quality. Everyone is friendly and the experience is wonderful. Went here for a date night with my man, and it was a wonderful time. Been there a few more times since then, and ordered takeout and it was all exceptional. One star off of a perfect rating to leave hope for improvement in the ick-palace that is the women's bathroom. It smells like mildew and reminds me of a really rundown ross bathroom... I don't know much about Sushi and I'm no expert on the cuisine, but I would say it's some of the better sushi I've had. I forgot to take pictures, but I got the Shrimp Tempura Roll, the King Kong Roll, and the Godzilla Roll. We also got some Crab Rangoons as an appetizer. The service was quite quick which was appreciated, and the presentation was very professional and appetizing. The ambience of the place was fairly traditional and there wasn't much noise or disruption. However, I wouldn't say it's anything over the top or fancy. The hot pot and Korean bbq is amazing. The meat is great quality and marinated well with lots of flavor. They have a bar where you can mix your own sauces with side dishes like cucumber, kimchi , kelp and more. Food was okay, lots of choices I. The all you can eat option. Service was painfully slow. Dessert options are not as advertised. (Only Chocolate ice cream, not the many selections advertised.)
