The worst was that they mismeasured our portion of the fence project, trying to charge us for 62…read morefeet (our half) when our portion was only 46 feet in length. Even if they're used to meters they should have know this was off. They redid that, but had wanted us to pay before we could inspect the work! and it is because we inspected we caught this error. They expected us to pay for the 62 foot segment without having any time to inspect it. It increased our bill by over 25%. As it turns out they do NOT know that a fence in California should not have contact with the dirt (it will rot quickly) and that cement or quickcrete needs to be mounded to avoid water getting into the post hole! They did a soso job of correcting this, we're not positive that there's no contact with dirt, and the quikcrete is very poorly set, obviously just laid on top of what ever post support they put in intially. Again, they did not want to let us inspect it prior to paying but demanded, repeatedly that we pay them immediately, when we knew their work was shoddy. They had the neighbor contact me repeatedly as well, demanding we pay instantly. They contacted me, rather than my husband, who is the lead on this, with a sob story about us being the last to pay, but that if we didn't they could not pay the workers, although our share was surely less than 10% of the total, and in that case they'd tried to double charge for about 17 feet they intially over-charged, if this segment had in fact been paid for. In addition, the neighbor who organized this is messaging me, because they expect immediate responses, and pressing me to nag my husband on their behalf, implying he is not responsible. His credit rating is among the highest given, excuse me. Very offensive. Normally, unless one signs a payable on completion contract (we did not), one has 15 to 30 days to pay a bill, and completion is after the work is inspected and approved by the client. Somehow, they expect emails to be returned immediately, rather than per usual business practice. I would never hire this company. Never. Overcharges, pushy, not able to deal with normal business practices and substandard workmanship.

I wanted to deck out the new pergola with heaters, a ceiling fan, an outdoor TV, lighting and sockets for plugging in electrical shades. In order to accomplish this, there needed to be a large amount of electrical work done to increase the amount of electricity to run everything in the pergola, plus, they had to figure out how to get electricity from the panel in the garage all the way to the pergola in the backyard. Francuz not only did an amazing job with building an additional electrical panel, running conduit, installing electrical boxes, switch panels, switch sockets, and GFI sockets, they also installed the ceiling fan, heaters, lighting, TV, etc.! I was worried about the outdoor TV being too heavy to mount on the metal pergola. They attached a couple metal bars to the pergola to mount the TV which was perfect! It wasn't easy to find someone to do all the electrical AND mounting work, but these guys did everything!! They were great at letting me know when they were coming to do the work and the expected completion date. I also appreciated their pricing transparency...there were no surprises. I will definitely use Francuz for future projects.

The first two contractors were less than ideal and MK Construction was fantastic. We'll never have another contractor! They did a kitchen expansion and remodel with a outside deck and retaining wall. Matt is an amazing communicator, very organized and schedule and just honest and straightforward. His crew arrived at the same time every day, were friendly, polite, hardworking and easy to be around. We opted to live in the house when the construction was ongoing and "cook" in our basement. The house/construction site, was cleaned up every day, Matt checked in with me about what was taking place every day, and when my son's monster truck fell under the stairs they were building, they pulled up boards to recover it. They almost always do just one job at a time, so they are your contractors during the scope of your job. If they do have finishes on other jobs they will let you know ahead of time, and will be very clear on when they will spend a day on another job. The work is great and we love our new kitchen and deck! Couldn't ask for a better crew. Matt also project manages everything. They handle the big details (like a fantastic subcontractor who did a great wood floor) and the small details (a designer referred us to wood cabinets that were missing pieces and Matt followed up and made sure everything was fixed and delivered). Couldn't ask for a better crew and a better job!

Re the Free-Estimate Thing: Allard, I understand that you offer free estimates as a courtesy to potential clients, and I understand that such a policy contains hidden costs for you. But that does not absolve you of responsibility for showing-up at those estimates, or barring that, calling the client and notifying him that you won't be there. Its an issue of professionalism, not the economics of the policy itself. Re the Courtesy Comment: It perplexes me that you bring up what courtesies you're entitled to when our primary issue is that you were a no-show, no call. A little courtesy from you would have spared us both this whole ordeal - all that was required was a brief phone call from you: "Sorry, Man. I've thought about it and it doesn't look like I'll be able to take the job at your place. Best of luck finding another repairman." That's it. Other reviewers have had the same no show, no call problems with you, Allard. When I called I talked to Peter who is the same person listed on the business license. This was the type of small company I was looking for. A company that knows their job but I do not have to pay the overhead of an executive staff and marketing. Peter showed up when he said, gave an excellent quote, clearly knew Hardie board as well as any other company I talked with. After getting the permit he was on the job almost exactly when he said he would. My take on his crew was that they are all friends. They work well together. Tear off was fast and installing the "body" hardieboard was quite fast. Most of the time was spent in prep - adding underlayment, flashing, paper & caulking. I was very impressed watching the attention to detail. When installing the siding they made suggestions but never pushed. I asked them to do our columns with a bit more detail which I knew would take more time. They did it with no hesitation and they came out beautifully. They cleaned up the job site each day. When doing tear off they filled their truck each day to remove debris quickly. Small Con: in the quote for the work they asked for a large downpayment. My understanding is calif only allows up to $1K as a downpayment. I emailed and suggested a pay as you go structure and DOM was happy to work with that so it became a nonissue.
