We were going to see a concert at the Anthem and stopped at Kirwin's on the way, since it was a lovely Irish pub with gluten-free options for my wife as well. The Anthem is only a five-minute walk along the scenic Wharf from the Irish neighborhood pub, which is both upscale and warm, with waterfront vibes. We sat in the main room that also houses the bar. There is a second-floor mezzanine overlooking the establishment, with additional windows that bring in natural light. Across from us, there is a private hangout room that I believe you can book for larger parties to celebrate birthdays, watch football, knock back pints and chips, or any combination of the above. Their Beckett's Beef Burger was wicked good with Bacon Jam and Chimichurri Aioli. Their pints are on point, and their Irish espresso martini with Paddy's cold brew, Kahula, espresso, and Demerara is solid. If you like a drop of whiskey, they do have a solid selection of Irish Whiskeys for a pour or two. Wait staff seemed friendly and attentive however, while 6 out of 7 people of our party received their food, I did not and I was the first to order out of the group. My food arrived 10 minutes after everyone received and finished their meal. My order (Corned Beef Sandwich) was ok, it was more of a Rueben Sandwich than Corn Beef. I would rate it a 5 out of 10. Fries and Guinness were 10 out of 10. Again my disappointment was that my food came out way too late, everyone in my party were done eating when I finally received my food. This was one of the first restaurants that my wife and I tried since being in DC, and we weren't disappointed. We were just walking down the Wharf looking for a place to eat when this restaurant caught our eye, because of how many people were there and there was a big screen outside with one of the World Cup games on. We were greeted and sat as soon as we walked up. Our server was over to greet us with water within minutes. We ended up order the Southern Egg Rolls as an appetizer along with a Strawberry refresher to drink. Both came out pretty fast. The drinks were nice and refreshing on a hot day, but had a lot of ice in them, not leaving a lot of room for the actual drinks. The egg rolls were nice and warm with a a good flavor. The Irish spice bag I ordered was pretty good. The food had a good amount of curry spice on them and the fries were crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. The chicken was good but just not great. The curry sauce that came with it was also pretty good. My wife also said here chicken Caesar salad was pretty good, and the chicken didn't give her the "ick" if you know what I mean. This restaurant has the most horrible system for seating patrons I have ever seen in my life. There was a line for walk-in groups so we waited in that. We noticed many groups of 3-5 were getting seated immediately. When it was our turn they checked for any open tables and said there was none at the moment and suddenly it's a 1.5 hr wait. We put our names on the wait-list thinking there's no way it can be that long. So we wait nearby and watch as they continue seating more parties that are walking in, and not sending me a table-is-ready text. Completely neglecting the wait-list and giving tables to parties that show up when a table happens to be available. Make it make sense???? My party and I were getting increasingly hangry but we didn't say anything just yet. The hostess and the owner could feel how upset we were just standing there watching table after table of newly arrived parties getting seated while we waited for 45+ minutes. FINALLY they decided to seat us, but that wouldn't have been the case if we weren't standing right there making sure we were seen. THEN another hostess came by after we sat down and tried to give our table to another party but the one who sat us had to stick up for us and said something like we were waiting longer. Upon learning that Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band would be performing at Nationals Stadium in D.C. toward the end of May 2026 I invited my son, my two brothers, a sister, and a family friend to join me at the concert. As an Old Town resident for the past 15 years, I've always included the D.C. Wharf in my short list of favorite restaurant locations when friends and family visit. Happily, we were able to book a table for six, and we had a perfectly wonderful meal there before the concert. We started with the spinach and artichoke dip (gluten free, vegetarian, $18) and two plates of Southern Rolls (chicken, corn, black beans, cheese, and Boom Boom sauce wrapped like egg rolls, $16 for six rolls per plate). Our server was a pro - she monitored the table closely without being intrusive, made sure drinks and meals were served promptly, and was both pleasant and helpful. The table ordered Kirwan's Lamb Burger (GF, with feta, tomato, tzatziki, and red onion - $24), homemade BBQ meatloaf (Champ Mash, green peas, and gravy - $30), Shepherd's Pie (braised lamb, carrots, cipollini onion, peas, mashed potatoes, parmesan, and Lamb Lollipop - $28), a corned beef sandwich (coleslaw, Thousand Island dressing, and a pickle spear - $22). I had the mini Maryland crab cake appetizer (with Cole slaw and sweet chili sauce - $18) - which, when taken with the appetizers, was more than enough for a meal. We were seated promptly and greeted by our server. Noise level was moderate, making it easy for our table to use our inside voices and still be able to hear each person at the table. Came here for music bingo on a Monday night for a friend's birthday. Its a 2 level Irish pub located at the Wharf. They have 2 levels and music bingo takes place in a small book on the second floor. The upstairs area has a bar and additional seating but it's smaller than the downstairs section. Music bingo was so much fun! It was about 4 rounds and the music selection was such a great mixed variety of oldies, r&b, pop, rock and alternative. She even did a special Latin round for my friends birthday. Service was a little slow because the bartender was also the server so it was quicker to order from the bar than waiting for him to come to the table but he was really nice. The shepherds pie came with a whole lamb chop in the middle which I was very impressed by and had a generous amount of lamb. Irish pub with a great location by the water on wharf in D.C. Nice atmosphere inside, but very crowded with worn furniture. We were seated outside on the heated patio - it was freezing cold. The chairs and table are old, and the table was unbalanced, so it was tipping back-and-forth throughout the entire meal. I thought it would not be much of a fun night - and it was a birthday celebration for my son, but our awesome server saved the night. I would return just for the stellar service. Outside of our server, the staff was kind of unwelcoming. We shared with the reception that it was my son's birthday and they didn't even respond. The appetizer was just OK, the fish and chips were good, the shepherds pie was tiny, the spice bag was just OK, and the chickpea curry was very bland (it was like eating, uncooked chickpeas out of a can - so bland, cold and no texture). The espresso martini was a very small glass filled less than a third... the recommended smoky cocktail was good. They would not accept any reservations and were not very nice on the phone... not mean, just uninterested and a bit dismissive - like they don't want more customers. The meal was $240 for three of us - brie, fish and chips, shepherds pie, chickpea curry, spice bag, two cocktails, two coffees and three beers. I think we were all hungry when we left (I couldn't eat the chickpea curry and no one wanted much of the spice bag). I wouldn't say dinner was a good value. I think this would be a good spot for a beer and a sandwich if there's a good table or bar seat available inside. I wouldn't recommend most of the dinner selections we made or seating on the patio. For the management - your staff is freezing on the patio. I felt so bad for them. The floor is freezing cold and the heaters were not doing much. Very unpleasant for us and I can only imagine what it was like for them to work hours in those conditions. They were shivering. This place was pretty good. I must say, casual, well-priced food options are few and far between in this area of DC. Everything seems to be super overrated and overpriced. Kirwan's stood out to us because it's an Irish bar and we really just wanted a casual bite to eat before the concert we were going to. This place was homey inside with plenty of bar seating, an upstairs dining area, a swanky back bar, and patio seating. We snagged two seats at the downstairs bar. Service was a little spotty with some interactions taking longer than necessary. Specifically, we watched several pours of Guinness be completed only halfway and then left abandoned on the bar for several minutes - for up to 10, 15 minutes. I know it's customary to let a Guinness settle after pouring about three quarters of the way, but these pours were left sitting incomplete far too long. My boyfriend is a Guinness freak and this was driving him crazy to watch. The gluten free options are far and few between but at least they are clearly marked. I got the caesar salad with chicken and a side of french fries. My boyfriend got the fish and chips. The food was fairly good but nothing to write home about. I am torn, it was not bad, portions were a touch light and given the prices are high as expected on the Wharf, and the service reasonable, I just wasn't blown away by anything in particular. But if that doesn't matter to you, the fish and chips here are stellar, way better than the Gordon Ramsay restaurant fish and chips next door (and I love me some Gordon Ramsay btw). They give you better quality and quantity, judge from my picture. Very nice staff and they have all kinds of Irish beer (smith wicks is an Irish red, Harp is an Irish lager, and Magners is an Irish cider; they also do mixed pints with half of those mentioned + Guinness). I rarely write a review, but felt I needed to for this one. Probably my first review in many years. My bad experience at Kirwan's was not just one bad thing, but just a series of bad service moments through the meal that soured me. If you go in with low expectations, you may enjoy yourself, but I will definitely never go there again. I went to Kirwan's on the Wharf after running in the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler to celebrate. I had picked it because they have a rare, very hard to find whiskey "George T. Stagg". It's a unicorn bottle! I'll almost certainly never own one, but it's a thrill to be able to try it at a bar/restaurant. I have been wanting to try it for years, and I was excited to finally find somewhere that had it on the menu! My girlfriend and I went over to the Wharf after the race. We walked into Kirwan's and stood at the entrance waiting for someone for about 2-3 mins. No one was there. When a waitress finally came over and we told her we wanted to sit outside, she led us to another entrance by the patio for seating and left us to wait for a hostess there. There were no signs, so that seemed weird. Typically, I expect to go into the front door of a restaurant to be sat anywhere, including outside. But, whatever. We had to wait for the outdoor hostess to finish a few things before she sat us. The restaurant did not seem very busy. We got seated after standing around for about 5 minutes. No big deal, but not a great start. When the waitress came for drink orders, I asked if she would confirm that they had the whiskey I came for: George T. Stagg. She said that she would check. She came back a few minutes later and said that they have it! I told her I would order it at the end of the meal. We ordered food. I have celiac disease and have to eat gluten free, but they have many things labeled on the menu as gluten free. I got the steak sandwich. The steak was fine, but for some reason, it came with absolutely no toppings. Just steak on a gluten free bun. Not sure why. I don't think arugula has gluten in it. But, whatever, it's fine. I'm not one to complain or send things back, so I ate it, no problem. (It was also an upcharge for gluten free, which isn't on the menu - I found out when I got the bill). The larger problem was the general service. Our waitress did not come back to check on us for the majority of the meal. We sat with empty drinks for about 30 minutes. Not great. We now wanted to get out of there, but I still wanted to try the whiskey that I had come for. I figured I'd order it and ask for the check so we could leave right after. I ordered the whiskey and asked for the check. It's a $75 pour. After about 10 mins, the waitress came back and said that "they were trying to find" that bottle of whiskey. This didn't make a lot of sense since I asked her to confirm that they had it went I had sat down an hour before. She came back a few minutes later and said they were opening a new bottle for me. Great! But no. This is where it gets really bad. The waitress brought me my $75 pour of "George T. Stagg" and the check. My gf had gone to the bathroom just before and saw the bartender opening the bottle that they poured from. It was not the ultra-top shelf "George T. Stagg" but a much cheaper bottle from the same line just called "Stagg". This bottle is a fraction of the price of the "George T. Stagg". They were charging me $75 for the wrong whiskey! When my gf told me about the bottle, I realized what they had done. The waitress came to take my card to pay the check, but I asked her to go double check on whether they poured me the right whiskey. I expected her to come right back, but no. We then sat there for another 20 minutes! We saw her walking around to other tables, doing this and that. We had wanted to leave, but were now stuck, waiting for them to own up to what had happened. She finally came back about 20-25 mins with another whiskey, saying that the bartender got confused. THIS was the right whiskey. She brought the actual "George T. Stagg" bottle out to show it to me (which I did appreciate). I had come for this whiskey and still wanted it, but I was pissed! They "comped" the wrong whiskey they brought me, but the bill stayed the same. I paid it and we left. Overall, the service was quite bad, especially since they did not seem to be overly busy. The food was fine, but nothing to write home about. For the price and menu labeling, I would have expected better handling of my gluten free request. And if you are going to offer high-end alcohol that costs more than a couple entrees for a pour, you need to be sure your people know what they are doing! How many customers have the staff of Kirwan's duped into paying super high prices for a lower-tier alcohol? As someone who does occasionally order expensive whiskeys to try at a restaurant, this is an incredibly huge red flag for me! If you order something expensive, watch them pour it! read more

Cool place with a kinda unique vibe! Right on the DC Wharf, Kirwan's puts you right where the action is. Great for a date night or just an evening out with the guys for a couple of cold ones. Expect an upscale but casual bar scene, with plenty of sit-down room if that's what you're looking for too. And the semi-outdoor seating is nice as well, and opens up to the wharf when the weather is nice. The menu and drink selection is pretty decent, and the food is superb. Not much else to say, other than that there's not much better after a couple of cold beers and some grub than a nice easy walk along the wharf, checking out the water and the marina and doing a little light people-watching. Fancier than your normal Irish pub. Very nice bar with TVs. Creative cocktail menu. Shepards pie had a lot of nice flavors but should have been a little bigger for the price. Service was very attentive and polite. read more

Came here after the Tems concert. Pretty good place for a burger and fries. Prices were reasonable. Was surprised since it was at the wharf. The server was amazing, even let us take our drinks to go. Ambiance was great. Had my meal outside by the front. I highly recommend. read more

They do a great lunch special now and again with a great burger and fries for a good price. I've also had their BLT which is solid. Lots of bacon. Their fries are a little too thick-cut for me and aren't as crispy as I'd like. Otherwise, fun place and good location. read more
