It was a hard restaurant to spot as the sign was some hanging banner that did not stick out. It's a self-service place where you have to get your own utensils, and grab your own waters yourself in plastic cups but they had paper straws. My husband was practically my waiter going back and forth refilling our drinks. That place was different than most others. The food came out quick which was a positive. The forks were dirty and so I asked for some new ones. It's not a great place to bring your elderly parents to. It was unpleasant service, server didn't come out to check on us right away. She was gone in the back for a long time. my husband tipped 20% because they make you sign it right in front of them while they hold the device for you to pay. I just became a vegan in January due to a health scare, and of course felt that I would be sacrificing flavor for life. However, I have been finding some great locations and this one is one that I will be adding to my list when I visit family and friends back in the Midwest. We both had the cauliflower wings to start with and the amount of wings you get is amazing and the flavor was great and whoever was working in the kitchen made those things so crisp and perfect. I also got the chicken sandwich and my friend got the barbecue burger and we both were licking our plates. It was so good one thing that I was very impressed with was the amount of Frenchfrench fries that were provided. A lot of times they put less than 5 ounces of fries on the plate and this place fills your plate up and leaves you so stuffed. Wow, I'm so glad to have found Kitchen 17. I haven't had deep dish in many years since I stopped eating dairy. We ordered a traditional deep dish which came with sausage and pepperoni as the toppings. This pizza was everything I hoped for! The sauce was good, the cheese was amazing, and it had the perfect amount of toppings. My only critique would be that the bottom of the crust was a little too crispy, but that didn't stop me from loving this deep dish. All the employees were very welcoming and friendly. So excited Kitchen17 moved to a larger location in Avondale, and I had to go check them out. They are one of the only places in Chicago to get fully vegan deep dish pizza, and they also have a great desserts (on previous visits I've had their cookie pies which are so good). On this visit I got their fully loaded deep dish which is...loaded...with in house made vegan cheese, sausage, giardiniera, and veggies to go. I re-heated it when I got home and enjoyed their pizza which has a buttery crust and a nice amount of filling. Only drawback of this place is it can be a bit pricy compared to other places, but for a local vegan business I'm more than willing to pay that extra amount. I wasn't impressed or excited at all about this experience. During the pandemic I ordered takeout and I think the fries were good. I forgot that I had tried this restaurant so I planned to take my sons here on our special day for deep dish. The hostess/waitress was so lifeless and didn't explain anything to me at the beginning of our experience. Aspects like we get our own napkins, utensils, cups, etc. (or that we'd probably have to wash our own cups bc they were DIR-TY). I had two young children with me. I don't think the experience was conducive for us. Having to walk away from my children each time I needed plates, ask a question or to get up and pay was very inconvenient. And the deep dish pizza was very unpleasant. I ordered vegan sausage inside but I wish I would have just ordered the bread and sauce because that's what we all ended up eating. Interior is cozy and would be nice to hang out with friends in. However, staff wasn't present very much which made it a little awkward and felt like an inconvenience as we were the only ones there. They're traditional deep dish has fantastic sauce and good crust! I was surprised by how good the house made cheese was, vegan cheese tends to have a tacky texture and this was much closer to the gooey real cheese people often miss. It was still a little heavy on the cheese for me but that might be because I don't do dish deep often and just scraped some off to make it my more style. One pizza was the perfect size for two people. We ordered a slice of cheesecake that came out in a single serve plastic to go container so that felt like it was a sign to head out rather than eat at the restaurant like we had planned. Side note: loved the music playlist that was on (2000s alternative rock). I have eaten here in person and ordered quite a bit since the start of the pandemic. The gyro was my favorite thing, but I'm done after the last two times I ordered it. What they sent me was inedible. Whoever prepared it had to have known what they were sending me was bad. The seitan in the gyro was completely dry, hard, and I legitimately couldn't even bite through it on the first try. In addition to being dry the first gyro barely had any seitan on it at all, it was basically a salad in a pita. The first time I thought maybe it was a mistake, but after the second time I can't justify it anymore. As a Chicagoan and a vegan, I didn't think I'd ever get a legitimate deep dish pizza ever again. I've tried a bunch of decent ones, but none of them really wowed me until Kitchen 17 came along. The traditional deep dish ($24) is a masterpiece. The cheese is savory and unobtrusive. The homemade pepperoni tastes great, with a savory bite. I was less impressed with the homemade soy sausage, but at least they do things from-scratch here. But what's really incredible is the crust: it's crispy, yet pliable with great mouthfeel. The cornmeal dusting gives it an extra oomph. For $24 you're getting a couple meals, given the size, which is a nice bonus. The mac and cheese side appetizer ($5) also tastes good but is oily. Kitchen 17 also has a bunch of desserts that you shouldn't pass up. The Boston creme pie ($5) is rich and creamy with a spectacular cookie crust. The space is no-frills, cozy and unpretentious. You order up front and they bring the meal to your table. Kitchen 17 is my new favorite vegan spot in Chicago, easily overtaking The Chicago Diner, Ka'lish, Ground Control and other similar spots. read more

Absolutely love this place! It's now a staple of any visit to Chicago. The restaurant has a fun alternative vibe (not like the grungy style you sometimes see) and has a bunch of old school games you can play while there. The food is FANTASTIC, as in, we developed a buffalo cauliflower wing addiction and my partner and I have been searching all over the Bay Area for something as amazing (sadly without any luck). If you order a deep dish pizza, be prepared for a 45 min to an hour long wait. Not good if you're in a hurry, and in addition to the slow cook time (which is normal with deep dish), they're still working on getting down their to-go orders. The only real issues I've had were more to do with ordering through the app Ritual and yeah they caused me to wait quite a bit, but the new GM was super apologetic and nice about it. Have you ever been excited to eat somewhere only to be let down? If you're vegan in Chicago or the suburbs you may have a list of places you've heard of you can't wait to try. Since the collaboration of new/old ownership with a well spoken of Vegan chef from California Kitchen 17 had been on my list. Maybe I had my hopes to high. I can look past the dark, aging interior. I even sort of liked the self serve water/coffee (if the coffee was good anyway) because it means I don't have to wait for someone to swing by so I can ask for a refill. I don't recall the exact price of the coffee either but I do remember thinking if it's self serve it should be a little cheaper. All of that aside I'm here for the food. I arrived with my husband and daughter and we each ordered/shared all the food. I got the Philly cheesesteak with chili topped fries. The sandwich is ok. Not horrible. Not great. And I can make something better, less soggy, less falling apart, better filling to bread ratio, and less salty at home. The chili on top of the fries was not like any I've ever seen before. Chili should have some sauce. This was as if someone took a package of Boca meatless crumbles and a can of beans, mixed them together, and tossed on spices. Dry. My husband ordered a Mediterranean pizza with an assortment of veggie toppings. The center of the pizza was mush. The water from the veggies had made the crust below so soggy you couldn't pick it up like a slice of pizza and trying to eat it with a fork was like eating pudding with over cooked/soft vegetable topping. Strangely enough for the amount of salt on this pizza, like the philly, someone didn't salt and strain the veggies to dry them out before use. My daughter ordered a the fully loaded pizza. This was also overly salted but was at least it wasn't a soggy mess and the crust was cooked/if not charred a bit even. I know everyone's taste are different. I don't like a lot of salt. My husband puts/adds salt on everything. He said the food was salty. That to me says a lot. When you eat something and it has so much salt you chug 2 bottles of water and still don't feel satisfied there's obviously too much salt in your food. I have 2 Stars because we order dessert to go. I would go back and order dessert again. The desserts are made by an employee baker not the regular kitchen staff and chef. She makes a good cake. Actually cooked like, not dry and not oily like some vegan cakes are by other bakers in this city. All my stars are for her ability and if this was a review for her only I would give more. Server was not very welcoming since the moment we called to see if they could seat a group larger then 4. Server never offered refills, soda was flat, did not bring utensils until after we had served our food, and was pushy about the bill and having us leave. I understand if it was extremely busy however there was only one other couple in the restaurant. After paying online, server confronted me in a hostile manner inquiring why I did not leave an electronic tip. I was going to leave in cash after our party was done talking however after bring yelled at and embarrassed I decided not to leave cash tip. We aren't vegan...we aren't vegetarian...but I still wanted to try! It's a cute little space where you order at the counter and they bring out to you. We tried a variety of things and everything was great! Cauliflower buffalo wings had the right amount of crisp and flavor. They were great! Special K burger was amazing! We got this yesterday and I was super excited to try some vegan pizza. We got three pizzas, cheese, veggie, and the jalapeño popper. We also got nachos and their sweet potato fries. The pizza looks very yummy and the taste was good! My only complaint was the cheese was a too greasy - it was plopping off my pizza which wasn't appealing to the eyes. And afterwards my stomach did not feel too well which was sad because taste wise super yummy, my favorite was the jalapeño popper New York style pizza! The other two deep dish did not sit right in my stomach... however the nachos were super good! And I would def recommend the nachos! Wish I didn't have an upset stomach after the deep dish pizzas! Amazing. I am blown away by the quality of food in this place. Everything is vegan. Everything tastes amazing. Everything is to die for on the menu. They also have desserts for sale in by the counter. Place is BYOB as well. I love deep dish pizza so this place is a haven for me. I like how they also have board games for people to play while they wait because it does take some time. (Side note :, battleship is a lot of fun! )Also the cheese fries are amazing. I wish they came with more cheese but the fries themselves are the perfect amount of crisp and crunch.
