Great Mexican vegan spot in Chicago. Have been to the one north of downtown. This one is slightly smaller, but has ample seating up top. Staff was very nice. Service was quick. Street metered parking is easy. I ordered horchata which was delicious. Ordered the carnitas and asada taco. Corn tortillas are fresh. They do use some Beyond meat-meh. But everything is flavorful and cooked to perfection. I'll continue supporting this women owned, vegan establishment. read more

We stopped in during happy hour to try somewhere new. Penelope's staff was very friendly and greeted us as we walked in and quickly seated us in the back where it opens up with seating. We quickly ordered the salsa and chips along with the cauliflower Al pastor and the mushroom tacos. Everything came out warm and fresh with bright colors. Couldn't wait to dig in! The cauliflower was so tender and the pastor spices were spot on. The mushroom tacos were light and had a great salsa verde to pair with. Next time we're in we will try the regular menu! read more

I love the murals and overall aesthetic of this restaurant. My food companion wanted to try birria tacos and there are limited places to find vegetarian/vegan ones. Their birria tacos use mushrooms. So the texture was unexpected. The seasonings were good. We also got quesadillas which were really good.Definitely will be back to try something else on the menu. read more

Me and my wife recently stopped here since we had a little Adventure in Chicago area. We were the very first customers inside. Parking is the only thing that might be a hassle since it's in a popular area. Me and my wife had their taco meal, their jackfruit tacos and their guac and chips. Their food was they're very incredible and I love that I do take out. The food was made really quickly and we were on the way back to the suburbs pretty quick. It's a little pricey but it's worth the adventure. They have a dining area as well. Overall, I highly recommend checking this place out especially if you're health conscious. read more

Of course, I had to check out the new Penelope's location! It's the closest one to me now, so I was super excited to try! This location still has the signature Penelope's look I've come to know and love. The dining room was spacious! You can still expect the same top-notch quality that you get at the other locations. In my experience, some restaurants' locations are better than others but that's not a problem for Penelope's. ALL of them are worth visiting. We got our usual asada fries with everything on the side. My boyfriend got the taco dinner and I got asada tacos with horchata. It was good, as always. Service was pretty good too! We were the only ones there, so it was hard for them to miss on this one, but everyone was super nice and friendly. Overall, well done! So happy to see Penelope's growth read more

This is a nice restaurant In the great Pilsen neighborhood. The service is nice and friendly. Very relaxed atmosphere. You feel like you are in Mexico. I had the guacamole and chips appetizer and it is the best I've ever eaten and the chips are thin and not greasy. I had the veggie burger with a salad and it was excellent. Visited 18th st location with couple of my friends. The host was generous in letting us sit down and order food so late near closing time. Ambiance was cozy with dim lighting and well paired music. We ordered multiple dishes, all well served with good presentation and amazing taste. Dragon fruit horchata along with heart shaped chimichangas and chunky quesa taco were the highlights. I believe this location just opened up a few weeks ago. I've seen many vegan spots open and then close in Pilsen so I'm hoping this one stays . The service was great! Our waitress was sweet and quick. The vibes are cozy and I couldn't believe they had tables up in the back! They had great music playing as well. As for the food. The chips and salsa were a 9/10. The salsa is incredible but some of the chips were a little on the hard side and could use a tad more salt. I had their cauliflower Al pastor and their quesadilla with "asada" on top. I love the Al pastor! Great flavor. But the "asada" meat could use a bit more seasoning and love. I've had similar ones that were much better prepared. I also tried their mushroom taco and barbacoa which both could again use some more salt and seasoning. My credentials: 2 years fully vegan in LA (there are vegan options literally everywhere there) and I've been plant based on and off for years since I stopped being vegan. Would I go back? ABSOLUTELY!
