We were really disappointed in the wonton because we assumed they were cream cheese wontons but there ended up being some sort of meat in them that wasn't very good. We did order for delivery on DoorDash so the menu didn't specify what was in the wontons so it may not be the restaurants fault. However, we will probably try other restaurants to find one with cream cheese wontons! read more

Okay, let's be honest... if you're looking at a chain Chinese restaurant, you're not looking for healthy and truly authentic Chinese, but for the classic Americanized greasy MSG infused food prepared in a general Chinese style. The China King on Loughborough in the shopping center across from the park and just off 55 hits that mark on all accounts. This is probably the best Americanized Chinese food I've possibly ever had and my wife and I are picky about the grease balls we shove down our gullets as we tend to only do that with foods that are worth the extra caloric intake. This particular China King seems to have some kind of extra savory soul food twist on their food as well. Can't go wrong. We'd felt disappointed in our Chinese food options the previous 5 years before moving into this neighborhood 2 years ago. This is the quintessential Chinese-American food restaurant. I have to hyphenate because no other country has this type of cuisine, not even China. As far as I know. After living in Japan for three years it was sourly missed. I will leave out atmosphere and décor evaluations because, let's face it, it's fast food. Although, the lady behind the cash register was hilarious. She cared about one thing, getting your order as quickly as possible. She was not rude just overly expedient than normal. It was if she had 10 seconds to complete every individual order. Anyway, on to the food. We had our food there at the restaurant. The tables were clean-ish. It took about 10-15 minutes for our order to be prepared before we had to go back up to the speed queens throne to retrieve our food. I guess she didn't have time to bring it to our table but like I said, it's fast food. At first glance I noticed that the takeout containers, without the top lid, were stuffed with food. That's a big plus so since I usually start with five stars on my evaluations and mark down from there, I have to mark up from five to six stars (don't worry it'll make since in a minute). I ordered the General Tso's chicken combo (fried rice and 1x egg roll/1x crab rangoon (CR). They have it listed on the menu as something spelled slightly different but I knew it would be the same. I've had this many times before and sometimes they use very low quality chicken but not here. The sauce was the perfect blend of sweet and spicy for this dish. I have to deduct a star (5 star) because the chicken was not as crispy as I like but it was good. The pork fried rice was average but a little dry. My wife ordered the seafood combo with large chunks of "crab meat" but the artificial taste made them inedible. I have to deduct another star (4 star) for the "crab meat." The best part of the dish was the CR. Although I always opt to get CR instead of an egg roll whenever possible I also ordered an entire order of CR (4 piece) as a side. I was pleasantly surprised with how large these CR were. The wontons were crispy, a little chewy and not overly greasy. Probably the best CR I've had in a long time. This calls for another star to be added (5 star). Oh, if you go, make sure to get "red sauce" with your CR. It's 85 cents extra but it's worth it. I will definitely return. read more

I did get chicken curry for the first time and it will be my new go dish for this restaurant. It was light but still full of flavor. It was just the right amount of spice for me. Sweet and sour chicken has a light and crispy coating and the same sticky sweet orange sauce we expect from Chinese take out. Vegetable fried rice is not super salty and the vegetables are never soggy. Crab Rangoon are properly filled and feature creamy and crispy textures. Ever had a St. Paul sandwich? If you aren't from STL, probably not. Order the plain with mayo and pickles- it's the unsung hero of China King. I only took off a star because they still use styrofoam but I wish I could add an extra half because they carry Vess sodas and the Pina Colada is a St. Louis institution all on its own. read more

It's happen more than once. They have never complained once. I pulled the same thing at Qdoba one night, and the worker was a complete jerk about it. However, save it for another review. China King is friendly, convenient, and quick! I have two go-tos: Chicken friend rice and Sesame Chicken. Neither is the best that I've had, but the orders are always very fresh and well-portioned. These guys are consistent! I've never brought either entree home and been disappointed with the quality. I've been there five or six times. I have no complaints whatsoever. Tried this for the first time today. The Good: -General Tso's chicken was pretty tasty. The chicken had a slight crispness to it that was nice. I absolutely loathe soggy breaded chicken -The fried rice was decent The Bad: -The wontons. I have no idea what kind of mystery meat was inside of them, but it was pretty unsettling -The egg roll. Again, not sure what kind of "meat" was on the inside, but it was weird...I couldn't eat it. -It occurred to me that these were possibly poorer quality, frozen egg rolls/wontons. Unfortunately, the negatives greatly outweigh the positives. The dumplings we ordered were visibly burned yet instead of re-making them, they just gave us burned dumplings. In addition, the dumplings had barely any filling. Our three entrees were bland despite one being labeled as "spicy." We've been trying different menu items at China King. We used to always get orange chicken and sweet and sour pork... Which are great! However now we like the triple crown (The szechuan or garlic). They are both awesome! I dial down the heat because I'm sensitive to spice but they aren't super spicy in the first place. The beef, chicken, pork, and jumbo shrimp are perfect. The beef is so tender! The mixed vegetables are pretty good too! The next thing I'm trying is the sesame tofu. :) China King is definitely our go to for Chinese. read more

I've eaten here many times and it just keeps getting worse. It was actually pretty good about a year ago, but now... I ordered a General Tso chicken. The customer service was nice and to the point, however the chicken was so over cooked I could barely bite through it, the pork fried rice was tasteless, the egg roll had this weird chemical-like taste to it, even the fortune cookie was stale. Me, being more than hungry, coming off a 12 hour shift, I at least tried to ignore these inadequacies, until I picked up a bit of rice and found a steel wire. The Happy Family noodle dish is a huge amount of lo mien with every possible meat available. I could eat this once a year and be satisfied. The broccoli in garlic sauce is always a winner. The only problem, it available in large only. SO get a friend to eat some greens. They have the St. Louis Original St. Paul Sandwich as a daily special. Spend $2 and get one so you may boast to your friends. A large, well lit parking lot makes getting in and out easier. Like some other reviewers reported, the food is always fresh, and the portions never leave you feeling hungry afterwards. We usually order the garlic chicken. I get the combo platter with pork fried rice and an egg roll. They let you customize the veggies in the entree. I always request broccoli only, and they always oblige. My friends and I make the trek from Soulard down to Loughborough for a good tasting humongous plate of food. We usually get one of the lunch specials which includes an entrée, white or fried rice, two crab rangoons or 1 egg roll. Add in a medium soda and the bill comes to less than $7. I usually get the General Tso's chicken and I rarely can finish it. When you consider it is usually serves for two lunches for me, that's less than $3.50 a serving. Service is always very friendly and is very fast. Now is China King as good as P.F. Chang's or some high end Chinese restaurant (which are notably absent from St. Louis)?
