Booked an appt to get our community cat spayed as she had just gone into heat and was bothering our male cat. She is super loved by the apartment complex. It listed that it would be 30$ to do that so I figured I'd just go ahead and bring her in so she doesn't have kittens. No where on the website does it say to book it under "lion" and the click here link for stray spays led me to where I booked. Well I got an invoice for 120$ I emailed telling them to not do the service that we would just come pick her up. They never replied so I called and they didn't answer. 2 hours later they finally called back saying normal spays cost 120$ where I told them she's not a pet? They asked me why I didn't just bring her in as a stray to get adopted out, uh maybe because she's not a stray??? I was later called by management where they apologized for the "confusing website" and would be keeping her if I don't pay the 120$. Well no our neighborhoods cat is in the shelter now and I have to explain to my apartments leasing what happened to her so they can send out an email to everyone that she's not dead and got taken due to the humane societies mistake. We went to the pet pantry to get some food for my Ragdoll cat. Not only did they give us dry kidney food, which we had no use for, but they've been distributing expired wet cat food, some dating back to mid 2024. Now my cat won't use the litter box. We've tried complaining but they refuse to do anything about it, especially when their strict policy is to not accept or give out expired pet food. Adoption process was straightforward and quick. We met with the cat we saw on their internet site, went home to think about it, came back the next day and adopted our young adult cat Peanut! Staff were very nice, attentive and professional. They also provided vet records for him. As a member of the Silverdale community for a long time, I decided I wanted to volunteer at the local humane society; however, when I asked the volunteer coordinator about how to sign the packet--she was abnormally, sickeningly "pleased" when telling me why I could not volunteer. So strange! I figured a Masters Degree might account for something...but clearly not enough to go walk a rescue dog. To make this story more unbelievable, I went back in to return my paperwork, and the same volunteer coordinator denied my request to help once again. We were looking to adopt a cat. We went through the entire process and we waited over an hour for them to tell us that they can't process it because only one computer was working. There were five employees sitting in the circle area and only one was working and yet again, we had to wait an hour! And still did not get a kitten because we were over the time of processing! This is incredibly frustrating and we wanted to adopt a cat from the Humane Society but now we will not be I urge others not to use the Humane Society. read more

Adopted our sweet little kitty here in September 2020. After trying to secure adoption spots at other places to no avail due to availability and other factors, we decided to make the trek to Kitsap Humane from Seattle and we are glad they did. The adoption process was simple especially during COVID. Sign up for a time slot and you have the opportunity to meet two potential candidates during that time slot. The shelter is brand new and clean. The staff was very courteous and friendly. Our initial pick was not available and was being adopted as we were waiting which is a good thing. However as we were walking inside, we discovered out future little kitty in the corner and decided to call her our own. With each adoption, they give you a bag of food to go with your little buddy. A few months after our adoption, Kitsap Humane reached out to us to check in on how things were going which was very thoughtful. I recommend Kitsap Humane! read more

COVID restrictions are hard. On the business, on the customer, on EVERYONE! So it's awesome when a business is doing it right, working within the system and trying to accommodate everyone while keeping everyone safe. My only beef would be the intercom they use to communicate with people looking to adopt is hard to hear. Apparently they have to shout on their end too but in all of life, it's not a deal breaker. Wait. My other beef is they didn't let me play with ALL the cats. For hours. Uninterrupted. (A girl can dream!) Seriously, the ladies were very pleasant, helpful (I eavesdropped so I'm comfortable saying that) and tried to solve problems and communicated well. Approximately 2 months ago now I adopted my little fur goblin. She is such a sweety and her nickname is KeKe (this a nickname, since we kept her name from the shelter). She is such a sweetheart, and I'm happy we ended up with her. One thing I will say is that the covid process right now to get an appointment with the cats is understandably not the easiest, but it makes sense that they are trying to keep the volunteers and animals safe during this time. When they tell you to pick out three-five different cats, or dogs depending on what you are looking for you have to go in with an open mind and not immediately get attached to one specific one, because the probability of you getting it are slim to none. I didn't let this affect me as much since I was just happy that during this quarantine time adoptions were booming. I always want an animal to go to its forever home. Out of the three cats I picked to check out KeKe was the only one left when I got there. She had a cold, but it was minor and they had her on medication. The reason why I gave such a high rating is because I truly believe they do go above and beyond for the animal. The volunteer that was with us was amazing. They were sure to go over all the details even things I wouldn't even think about like how to handle litter when pregnant. When we adopted her that day it only took about 25 minutes for the logistics part of things, and most of the time was just spent with us hanging out with her to figure out if we were the people she wanted. I love that they gave us her entire medical history to take home with us. We only paid around a $100 for her which was a steal in my book considering the fact that they fixed her and gave her all her vaccinations as well as gave her medicine everyday. I even got a call a few weeks later from them thanking us for adopting her! She got over her cold in two weeks and is always full of energy! read more

This business is a joke. I have called and left messages for weeks. I needed help. Everyone seems to care so much...except they don't. Seems to be a common theme here in the PNW though, but I digress this business is the reason there are so many animals without homes and why people end up being the animals back. We got a dog a few months ago. He has some problems with cats, and other animals. In the paper work we went through again he had behavioral problems when the humane society took him in. Okay okay no biggie then miraculously after putting him on the chill protocol 24 hrs later no behavioral issues and all of the behavioral paper work was not given to us with his original paperwork. We have taken him to school at one point I was walking him 4 times a day and he continues to have issues. When I tried to contact the humane society after 1 months then the 2nd month and finally the 3rd month no answer to email nothing. I've been working with the dog and we are in month 9, the dog seems to be getting worse we walk all the time we play then out of no where he goes after my cat or my other little dog. The kitsap humane society is a joke they are just terrible now I need to figure out what to do and again I ask them for help no answer nothing read more

Today I drove 1 1/2 hours to see a particular cat. My grandmother had asked that I drive up and see if I could get this cat for her. She has a cat currently and feels that after 10 yrs she is able to add another cat to her family. My grandmother wanted an older cat, maybe someone who would be more her speed. After careful review we found one with the specifics that my grandmother wanted located at Kitsap Humane Society. So I packed my two young kids up with my mother and drove the 1 1/2 hrs to get there. We thought about waiting and then calling but were afraid that after our longer search that the cat would be gone if we waited too long. We got there 20 minutes after they opened and walked up to the front desk. Volunteer 1 behind the desk was annoyed at best. She said she was too busy to deal with our request and told us to wait. We asked if while we waited we could look at the cat room and she said no, just wait. So we waited. Volunteer 2 came up and asked what we were there for. We explained we had read and seen a certain cat on the website and Facebook. She flipped through a couple pieces of paper and asked why we were looking for that cat. We then explained that the cat was not for us but for our grandmother who had sent her application in online before. She said she would NOT show us the cat since the cat was not for us. We explained my grandmother lived 2 hours away and had a hard time on freeways. She said well you can drive her but I am not showing you the cat today without her here. Volunteer 3 a little deleted that we couldn't come for what we came for we went into the kitty room to look at the cats. There was a volunteer in there and we asked her about a really cute tabby. We commented that the age of the cat didn't seem to fit the size of the cat. The volunteer said, " oh well they make up the info that they don't have like age, names etc." Finally we left for the 1 1/2 hour drive back home. I am all for rules and I get that they have found better homes by having the rules they have. I wish that when we had called they had told us that my grandmother would need to be there. I also wish that it was more clear that they do NOT take applications online. Not only did I waste three hours of time driving up there but I also got my grandmothers hopes up. It is experiences like this that cause people to "shop" with a breeder rather then go adopt from a rescue. It takes very little to be polite and kind even when someone like us didn't understand. If we had been treated better I would have arranged to drive my grandmother up to see the cat at a later time. I hope that more people in the area volunteer so that the animals don't suffer from lack of people wanting to deal with the current volunteers. read more

The shelter has become notorious for placing very sick cats, all the while killing about one-fourth of the cats they receive. However, they claim kill rates for dogs lower than in no-kill shelters, and perhaps they don't exaggerate; yet they still manage to get in so many digs against no-kill shelters that I don't trust their boasts, burying stats as they do in mere political hatred for the no-kill movement. On their website they literally council to ignore this movement and please don't even use the term! A sweet small dog was adopted by my immediate neighbor from the Kitsap shelter. She was told the dog was approximately 7 years old. This was obviously a VERY senior dog -- a completely toothless chihuahua I'd estimate be 15 years old. I'm glad it had a nice few months for the end of its life, but these people loved that animal and had not signed on for a senior animal soon to pass. This seems typical of the reliability of the information this place concocts on each animal. But the shelter has a foster set-up that probably does help them kill fewer dogs than many other chapters of the somewhat misnomered Humane Society. So if you can save a dog from the Kitsap Human Society, I commend you. Just don't trust them while you put in the effort. My most recent experience with the local Humane Society was their Animal Control division, and it went very badly. They could be no help at all with a loose pitbull that was killing smaller neighborhood dogs. Our cost is over $5,000 in emergency vet bills for our own dog and there is no system in place, according to Animal Control, that could've helped us recover costs from a recalcitrant owner of their own maltreated and dangerous animal, nor could they do more than request, to no effect, that the owner try to keep his animal from roving. I don't want to discourage people from adopting animals, but KHS needs to REALLY get organized when it comes to special events. We went in to get a kitten. I knew it would be busy so we showed up early. There were about 5 people ahead of us. Grabbed an application and I was maybe the 3rd one to have it filled out. Brought it to the counter and they asked what I would like to see (said the orange kitten), a lady VERY rudely sitting down behind me still filling out and app yelled out I was supposed to see that one next! Lady at the counter then tells me I'm AFTER her. 1. Doesn't have her app filled out (you would think when looking at an animal that's how they keep the line organized) 2. Why does she just get to yell that out when I'm up at the counter with a done app asking politely? 3. Obviously the kitten would be taken, what's the point in waiting with my 6 yo to have her just be disappointed. They now have NO kittens left. That baby was the last one. I was clearly pissed. So I sat for a minute to talk to my daughter about what happened and another customer next to me whispers to me they have 4 Orange babies up at petsmart right now. WHY DIDNT THEY TELL ME THAT! If it wasn't for the nice lady next to me overhearing everything I was going through, I wouldn't have ever known and wouldn't have came home with a kitten that day. read more

I was honestly shocked to find such mediocre reviews for the Kitsap Humane Society across the web. I thought I'd add my two cents as to why my experience definitely merits a five-star rating. My mom, boyfriend and I drove over an hour to this Humane Society to adopt a kitten or a cat. I found that this HS had the widest variety of cats and kittens to pick from so I wouldn't feel pressured into choosing one that I wasn't in love with at another shelter. After driving over an hour, we pulled into the place and it was packed. We were told that they were having a Valentine's Day adoption event (we adopted the Saturday before Valentine's Day) and that $14 was taken off the adoption fee of every cat and kitten. Dozens of people were crammed into one tiny building. However, every single staff member and volunteer worker that we interacted with was gracious, helpful, and willing to take the time and answer any questions I had. It was a madhouse to go through the process of adopting a kitty but, given the conditions, I was definitely impressed with how the staff handled the situation. We went through the cattery, reading the information provided for all the cats, and picked two that we wanted to meet. We were told that one of the cats we had chosen to meet was set up in one of the offices, so we went back to meet her. Apparently our kitty was very nervous in the cattery; the hustle and bustle made her so overwhelmed that she wasn't eating properly. However, once she was in a quieter environment the volunteer adoption counselor told us that she really blossomed into an incredibly affectionate kitty. I fell in love with her on the spot. There were a couple of health problems that they were very upfront about. First, she had an upper respiratory tract infection which was being resolved with daily medication. It was really not much of an issue. Secondly, she had a potential urinary tract infection. She was straining to urinate but they weren't sure at the time as to whether or not she had a UTI because the lab results hadn't come in yet. They said that there was no way to put her on hold but if we wanted we could come back later and take the chance of her not being there. We decided to adopt her anyway, and I am so glad we did. Because of the risk of her having a UTI her $66 adoption fee was waived (normally the fee is $80 but was lower because of the adoption event). We were also counseled about the recommended actions to take because of her being a shy and/or fearful cat when adjusting her to her new environment. I was definitely impressed with the information, services, and paperwork provided. We were given all of her records, including all medical records and a behavioral assessment. She was originally a rescue from Bakersfield, CA, and we were given all her records from the Bakersfield shelter as well. One of the staff members walked us through a folder containing everything we needed to know about adopting our kitty, including information about her vaccinations, health and behavioral history, and certification of her being spayed. I'm so glad to have adopted my furbaby, who I named Lucy! She's such an affectionate cat and a great companion to have. I'm also really glad to have adopted her from a no-kill shelter that really cares about their animals. She did end up having a UTI, but the vet visit was provided to us by our local vet at no cost, and her medication only ended up being $33. The staff even followed up with a couple of emails and phone calls checking in on how she was doing, and letting me know the results of her lab work. They really took the time to make sure she was doing well in her new home. I'm so grateful to this Humane Society for treating Lucy and I with such care and compassion. What a mixed bag - truly inconsistent and confusing. First thoughts were that these folks really care about the animals, there is a lot of chaos and confusion with animal rescue and yet many of the animals were known by name and background. Some have been there for a year or more. I adopted two cats, both had undergone life saving surgeries - each treated by a different vet. Love the cats, but can't understand why one had no vaccinations and the other one only half. These cats were under care for months and the one that was vaccinated had been given them just a few days prior to adoption. Both had worms and are undergoing treatment now - It's one thing to rescue, save a life - but frankly I'm stupefied at what a mess this ended up being. Rescue - Rehabilitate - rehome = = well they rescued them and rehomed them, but forgot a good chunk of rehab and basic care. read more

I've been to some number of animal shelters over the years, and this is one of the best I've seen. This is at least in part because, as I understand it from them, they are a "no kill" shelter! I.e., except for seriously ill and unredeemably vicious animals, they do NOT euthanize! They have a large and well-maintained facility, a large and seemingly effective group of volunteers (and can always use more), competent advisors, various free and low-cost services (although state law prohibits them from providing after-adoption vet services), and an experienced staff who seem uniformly cordial and patient. And patience IS required on all sides. They have a careful but complex, multi-step view-visit-consult-adopt-vet-pay-pick-up process, an always-crowded lobby-office area, and although partly computerized, their adoption system has a glut of duplicitous and time-consuming paperwork. It's GREAT to see such a well-run (and no-kill!) shelter, especially in these financially-trying times. read more

UPDATE: 6/6/15 Took the cat back to discuss with them about selling sick animals to customers and was quickly approach by a rude woman who says she monitor their Facebook page/customer service. In the middle of telling her the issue concerning the cat, she walks off from me. She says we are not refunding your money. This animal shelter, will sell you an animal under misleading guidelines that the animal is not sick, make you sign their contract and then not check out the animal if you have an issue. Basically that is like you sold me a lemon car. You tricked me out of my money, took the cat back and then will sell him to someone else. So you're making money off of sick animals. I am truly disgusted at this place. I went to adopt a male cat which when he got to my house and started peeing all over our house. The cat have been in my care for 24 hours and is throwing up, won't eat, won't drink water, and acting very strangely. The adoption papers basically is a kick in the gut cause they simply state, we will take the animal back but the animals problems are now yours but they lied about this cat health in the first place. I plan on taking some action about this. Someone need to check into the business practice of this place and I suggest that others look further into these concerns. read more

Treat the dogs good from I have seen but in regards to adoption they DO NOT follow the first come first serve especially when you had to make appointments . I tried for 9 different dogs every time got back to me almost 2 weeks later and told me they were adopted. You will have much better luck looking on craigslist and other websites. read more

THIS SHELTER WILL SELL YOU SICK KITTIES. The kittens all have something called "Feline Calicivirus" and the symptoms are a respiratory infection. It is a virus and is NOT feline herpes. Do not let the vet tell you it is. We wasted money on treatment for herpes when it wasn't it. As long as the kittens can eat/drink/play and the symptoms are sneezing, wheezing, and runny nose, this is what they have. I promise. Just a heads up for others looking to get kitties here, you'll need antibiotics. I recommend Alder Trail Animal Hospital. read more

We ended up leaving and going to Petsmart later to buy fish food and saw some more dogs being shown there frok the same shelter. I had the best experience here. The staff was friendly, and if I could I would adopt all the animals! I got 2 cats from here 2 weeks ago, who were all up to date on vaccinations (they need 1 more), both were fixed, and pretty healthy looking. They gave me a pamphlet of a bunch of vets in the Kitsap area and it has coupons for a free first initial exams, etc. They even gave me 2 coupons and a sample of the type of food they eat! Which was awesome. Even though the cats were brother and sister and recommended they be adopted together, I still paid full price for both cats. I wish I would've gotten some kind of discount for adopting them together. Anyways, I understand! They have been amazing, and get along great with my other cat. My experience here was wonderful. They were still on stray hold when me and my husband went up there looking for a new addition to our family, so we had to wait a couple days but I went in the morning when they were available and adopted them both, brought them home right after I filled out all the paper work, too! The only issues I had while here is I had to wait to do a meet and greet. I believe it was about 30 - 45 minutes of standing around waiting for one of the volunteers to help out. then again, it was really crowded. But I am very pleased and would recommend them to anyone! read more

Since then, they have probably spent the entire amount of my donation bombarding me with an unending stream of junk mail requesting more money, along with unwanted newsletters & what-not. There is no way to get off their mailing list. They don't provide any information or process for how to unsubscribe. You cannot get through to anyone via phone, & if you leave a voice message, it is ignored & they never contact you back. I really don't know where to start......in less than 2 months we had to take 2 dogs due to animal aggressive behavior that was lied about at the adoption meeting. 1st dog needed vet care, 600 worth....and daily allergy meds @150 a month.....they said he was good with cats kids and dogs. He was not. 2nd dog we were told the same, found out not to be true either. She also had a cold and got mysenior dog and 2 cats sick. I called the society to explain this and they had alrdy adopted out the dog they said needed behavioral classes. When I got a call back the ladys exact words were "well he could have got that anywhere" I said no ma'am he could not. He is an inside dog with a 10 yr ver record proving he has never been treated for any illness. She quickly cut me off diverting blame and implying it was our fault. If nothing else let this be a warning to potential adopters to be aware of the unprofessional and questionable business practices. I have filed complaints and will be moving forward in the next step i need to take. Our vet will be writing a letter confirming we were not responsible. Please be careful here folks. read more

Wow! I was so prepared to like this place and give a donation. I called on Monday and they told me to bring in 7 stray rabbits between 11-4 to drop off. I loaded up the rabbits on Tuesday (some in bird and rat cages) on a hot day, drove out there only to be told they could not take them. Not ok! read more

What kind of place requires you to wake up in the middle of the night to schedule an appointment via their website. They would would not return my calls so that was my only option. After four months of getting up at night attempting to make an appointment, one finally became available. I took time off of work to drive a hour to make the appointment only to be denied entry into the building because I apparently made a "cat" appointment instead of a "kitten " appointment even though I used the names of kittens and mention the word kitten several times in the application. We adopted a dog from Kitsap Humane Society, not only did we have to wait three hours to be able to meet with the dog while we were the only ones in line to meet him, after meeting him we were told we were approved but we had to have him meet our Roomate's dog. So we had the application done meet the dog and by the time we got back with our dog they had someone else looking at him and made us wait too long to where we had to go to work and come back the next day and hope that he wouldn't be adopted out by someone else. I felt like it was a waste of our time spend almost an entire but then after adopting him we have discovered that he has pneumonia. The adoption fee did cover one free vet visit, but it did not cover the costs of the antibiotics. I tried contacting the humane society to notify them that other dogs might also have kennel cough or another form of canine lung problems and none seemed too concerned with the fact that they adopted out a very sick puppy or that they may have others that are also sick. read more
