Gawd, I hate puns. I'm no fan of retro decor. And Rachael Ray is not a culinary role model for me probably because of her chirpy, often misplaced enthusiasm and burgeoning media empire. Yet, inexplicably, through some voodoo power of Hitleresque mind manipulation, the combination of these three factors drew me to venture on a brisk forty-minute walk west on Roscoe from my hotel in Lakeview to try it. Color me naive. It's a compact place in front, though I noticed later that there is seating in the back and even an outdoor area. The decor is what you'd expect with a name like that. Lots of crapware everywhere. Episodes of "The Addams Family" and "The Munsters" play on a black-and-white set behind the counter. Naugahyde seats. Toasters used as napkin holders. Fiesta-ware for plates. Psychedelic wallpaper in the restroom. I get it. And I guess so did Ms. Ray who visited here on one of her "$40 a Day" shows on the Food Network. I believe she used her full artillery of catch phrases (like "Yum-O!" and "Oh my gravy!") when eating here, and in fact, the dish she ordered has a headline in the menu acknowledging her personal recommendation. Personal curiosity got the best of me, and I ordered her dish, the $7.95 "Green Eggs and Ham...Sam" (see my photo), which was scrambled eggs mixed with spinach pesto, chopped scallions and cubed ham. Because of the ham's high fat content, the concoction tasted kinda greasy to me. It came with what I call home fries, although I noticed Chicagoans routinely call them "hash browns". It came with a big hunk of Texas toast, which I haven't seen since, well, my childhood in Dallas when it came with a Sizzler's steak. I thought it was all OK but not worth the trek I took to come over. Not a Yum-O but not a Bum-O either. FOOD - 3 stars...a decent breakfast if rather greasy AMBIANCE - 3 stars...like a thrift store threw up, but baby boomers may find it appealing...hey, wait a minute, I'm a baby boomer SERVICE - 3 stars...kinda disappointed at the lack of effort in engaging me, though they filled my coffee cup often TOTAL - 3 stars...recommended if you are in the general vicinity or if you think Rachael Ray represents the second coming of the Virgin Mary read more

This is a nice little breakfast/brunch spot in the area, especially for any foodies out there. The food has a unique and spicy twist on many dishes, which turned out delicious. My friend ordered the chicken and waffles, while I had the Kitsch'n Chilaquiles. My friend raved about how fluffy her waffles were, and I loved the great texture and spice to my dish. I ordered coffee, and though it wasn't anything special, I was pleased with it, and it was routinely refilled. Service here was friendly and hospitable, though the dining space was a tad cramped. Regardless, the space seemed very well kept and managed. Every table had cute decorations and random items on them ; for example, ours had a number 8 ball. We didn't intend to have a weekday brunch at Kitschn on Roscoe, but it was Wednesday, and Lucy's Cafe down the street was closed. We remembered that Kitschn, and were pleasantly surprised it was open and had comfortable, socially-distant seating on the sidewalk, and there were tables available. I was told by the server that they have a whole other outdoor seating area in back, but I didn't see it by myself. Any breakfast place that gets coffee served quickly is a place that makes a favorable first impression. Good coffee, and lots of refills, are part of breakfast, and I appreciate the refills. Since it was a weekday, I had the option of an omelette where I could choose up to 4 ingredients. My friend went with the avocado toast. Both entrees came with rosemary-infused hash browns. The hash browns were spectacular. Cooked light and crispy, they had a lingering mild aroma of the rosemary. My companion and I agreed, these were the best hashed browns we'd had in a long, long time. I enjoyed my omelette very much. I choose carmelized onions, peppers, mushrooms and zucchini -- no cheese! -- for the filling. It was large and delicious. I can honestly tell you, aside from a few crackers with hummus at 9pm, I didn't need to eat anything else all day. The server came by with a to-go box and seemed surprised that I was demolishing my meal. There was nothing left to take home. It was a lot of food! My friend enjoyed her avocado toast very much. She doesn't care for eggs at all, and she's a vegetarian, so she was very happy to see the avocado toast on the menu. She ate the whole thing. She did report the next morning, though, that she had room for dinner! Our server, whose I believe was Sarah, was friendly, professional and prompt. The past two times we have tried to eat breakfast here the doors have been locked. The website and socials indicate they open at 7:30 on the weekends to accommodate families. There aren't many restaurants open this early so the time is perfect for a family with a toddler who wakes up early. However, twice now we have sat and waited in our car from 7:40-??? Finally, this morning, with a screaming crying hungry toddler we decided to head home after waiting 30 minutes--40 minutes after they say they are "open". We will not be coming back here for breakfast. I would recommend finding staff who can work your scheduled hours. read more

Interesting place. Came here looking for a quick meal, place was relatively empty. Nope, never got my coffee right, cups were dirty, waited like an hour plus for a simple meal that arrived cold. My spouse kept his food which was chicken & waffles. On the other hand, I sent back my all American breakfast. Overall the place is nice, appears to be clean, but strongly doubt I'd ever come back. Our brunch described in two words.... Dumpster Fire. It took 30 minutes for the waiter to tell me that they ran out of Lox for the Bagel and Lox plate that I ordered. My wife had already finished her food because it came out 20 minutes before everyone else. The waiter asked if I wanted to re-order. I asked for the Tuna Melt. Buyer beware. It was a can of Bumblebee Tuna and Miracle Whipp on white toast with a bullet proof shell of Veleda cheese. I couldn't go through with eating this, so the waiter asked if I wanted something else. I ordered a breakfast burrito with pulled pork, to go. We also ordered Phat Cakes for the table with caramel and bananas. The cakes came out with caramel and pecans. I was not happy with the lack of bananas, but the cakes were good, which is why i was able to stomach a second star. The waiter said he would offer a free drink because of the inconvenience. Our bill included all of our drinks, the tuna melt, and the breakfast burrito. I was done trying to remedy this god-awful experience, accepted defeat with the bill and left. Remember the burrito with pulled pork i mentioned... When we got home i took a massive bite of chorizo. The rest of our order that came out right looked average at best. I don't think it's worth our time and energy to try this place a second time. Choose your brunch spot wisely. read more

Not diggin this Kitsch'n. I really want to give it 2.5 but... I ordered the Green Eggs & Ham (as seen on Raechel Ray it boasted on the menu). It said it had pesto, spinach and diced ham and the like. It was totally flavorless and the ham was yucky phony ham. My breakfast mate ordered the famous chicken and waffles and that was just plain bad. It was like a frozen boneless chicken breast with some breading. The waffles were tasty but you only get a half a waffle. The chicken was totally flavorless as well and makes me wonder if they got any salt in the kitchen. I don't think I'll be back here because the food was just not good. Sooorrryyy!!!! read more

Kitsch'n is a great neighborhood spot on the Roscoe strip. They have a lot of good brunch items, but some of my favorites are the chilaquiles and the green eggs and ham. They also have side of candied bacon that is a must order. Huge chunks of bacon that are perfectly sweetened and crispy! The ambiance is fun inside, lots of retro decor aging back to the 70's. Multiple items on the menu also match back to this theme. There's a quaint but cute patio out back that I recommend if it's warm outside, which earns brownie points in my book! read more

The decor includes wacky retro stuff like old beer cans and board games that patrons can play, assuming the crowds are not clamoring for empty tables. There is an interior courtyard in the back that acts as a beer garden. I had chilaquiles, a bountiful serving of Mexican-style scrambled eggs and bacon with toast that was surprisingly tasty. After getting woken up by a chipper friend at 9 AM after getting in WAY to late the night before I conceded that a proper Breakfast would be the best way to start the day. We were pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately on a Sunday Morning, service was outstanding and food was good. One way you know a place is good is Menu Envy. After ordering an Omelet I looked at the food friends ordered and thought... that looks good I should have ordered that. Overall the experience was positive. I'm a big review reader. I went to Kitsch'n based on the rave reviews given in Chicago Kids Magazine. It was hyped up to be a very kid friendly, fun place to eat with the shortees. The magazine was correct!! One of us, (Not me, him lol) is a little on the high maintenance side and didn't like the curb appeal. He didn't think it Looked very "kid friendly" either. Boy did he eat his words and everything on his plate! They served brunch for our tot in a cute Hello Kitty lunch box. She loved it! There was a Twinkie inside too but... The coffee was amazeballs! The staff was beyond kind and especially prompt with her service. I had mixed expectations with chicken and waffles, as they can come out poorly breaded or overly soggy. Went here with mum with a groupon. The place itself is interesting, I thought I was walking into someones house. The outside area seems to be for quick bites, but there are 2 big rooms behind, one being outdoor and that would be really fun in the summer. I have to say though, that I was here during winter and it was WARM. Lots of wood, multi coloured steel chairs and tables and a tiki lounge. They also have some board games to pass the time, it really does feel like you are in someone's house. Liked the little bright multi-coloured lights as well. Staff was great through the course of our meal, even changing my order when I changed my mind. (hey, my mind is a delicate piece of machinery!) We had the pesto omlette and the southwestern bbq chicken omlette. I chose not to get the BBQ sauce on top and was glad I did, since I didn't really like the sweetness of the sauce. The omlette, however, was outstanding, I am eating it for breakfast again today. They come with hash browns and texas toast too, I can assure you you wont go hungry of you come here. The mimosa I had was nothing to write home about, but mum's mai-tai was amazing. I will come back in the summer and enjoy the patio more. read more

What a cute place! Lots of 70s memorabilia (Leif Garrett, anyone?) and cozy feel instantly give a yummy vibe. But the food has to match up - and it does! Everything made with care and attention, even though we arrived less than an hour before closing. I ordered the fish tacos, which can be a bit of a crap shoot. But wow! These were crispy pieces of cod, not greasy, so tasty! Served with sides of mildly spicy salsas plus red cabbage slaw and a side salad (by request). I just kept remarking to hubby on how great this dish was. Highly recommend. Hubby had the chilaquiles and he ate those right up so I think they made the grade. Close to closing but they still made a pot of decaf for him without rolling their eyes. Great service from several people, and even though we were in the back room, we weren't forgotten. Now, I hate to mention this, but we were in the back room, one of the last customers, close to closing time ... and everyone wants to get out of there, right? But the atmosphere of our meal was spoiled by a strong lemon Lysol smell in the area and THEN they began to actually mop the floor near us with it. We had to leave - Lysol and food just is an awful combo and I wish we hadn't had to experience that. I just didn't have the heart to complain about it, either, or I suspect they would have ceased immediately. Go check this place out in Roscoe Village - it's amazing. read more

I have really really really tried to like this spot and I just can't. I've now visited numerous times for breakfast and lunch and have been disappointed each time (note - I had eaten at the other location even more and I think they had a better menu which never seemed to fully cross over to this spot).... Anyway, everything I've eaten here has managed to be bland or just weird. I've tried sandwiches which were ok, but overly boring and not worth the calories. Also, on my most recent visit, I had the breakfast burrito. I love breakfast burritos and usually eat them any time I can find them. This one was so lackluster. It didn't taste like much, but what it did taste like was zucchini...zucchini? What an odd addition for breakfast and one that I did not enjoy. It may have been listed on the menu, and if so, I must have glanced over it since zucchini in my book does not belong in a breakfast item. The coffee is usually good, so I have to say that this is about the only redeeming quality in the meals that I've had (oh, and the bloody marys...very weak according to my friends - I didn't actually try one...though for $5, I suppose that's to be expected...the mimosa was tasty). read more

Great throwback stop for breakfast! It has a great array of options for both adults and kids. There are "throw back toys" at the table to entertain kids of all ages. (Think magic 8 ball and etch a-sketch). The breakfast tacos were delish! I'd trade out the hash browns next time for something else...only because I'm not a fan of any hash browns. If you like crispy thin hash browns, you'll love these. They have a nice little kick to them. My kids ordered the French toast and it came with a fruit salad to balance out the meal. I came here on a Sunday for brunch, hoping that this little spot in Roscoe village would be a nice start to the day. Unfortunately, it wasn't. My waitress, Nikki, assured me that the breakfast burrito didn't come w/mushrooms, - and when it finally arrive, low and behold - there were a plethora in my meal. When I politely told her that she was wrong (and that I'm allergic so can't eat the entire meal) she looked at my like I was annoying her - and apathetically offered to put in a different order - which took an insanely long time to come out. When it finally did, it was very average tasting. Long story short - there are plenty of brunch spots to take your $$ to in the city. This definitely isn't one of them.
