You can really tell a lot about a place by how they fix a mistake. A few weeks back we had a lunch with visiting friends new to Chicago. They loved the ambience, food and service. We ordered my son (nut allergy). a dish to go and received a different variation than what we ordered. Unfortunately he took a bite before he realized it and had an allergic reaction I decided to call just to give the owner a heads up to remind the staff. During our visit to Chicago, we were exploring the area in search of a quiet spot for breakfast. The vibe of the restaurant immediately drew us in, reminding me of my younger years with jukeboxes, records, and Pac-Man video games. We decided to try the Chicken Pesto Panini, which was absolutely delicious--easily one of the best paninis we've ever had. We also ordered one of my all-time favorite breakfast dishes: Avocado Toast with over-easy eggs. However, as you can see from the photo, I received scrambled eggs instead. The dish was still tasty, but I was a bit disappointed by the mix-up. I chose not to request a correction, though. On top of the vibe of an atmosphere this place provides, this was the perfect casual boozy, sweet brunch that I was craving so desperately. The Candied Bacon Brunch BLT was so GOOD. The brioche / honey mayo combo was sooo good like... I could have ate 8 slices of that & be very pleased. But the candied bacon is so obviously the star of the show. It was my first time having it & yummmm. How they make that? Wasn't crazy about the hash browns as they were giving those lil crispy crunchy sesame sticks in asian salads, but the flavor was there. Years ago, I met a friend at Kitsch'n on Roscoe, and I liked it. Since I was in the area, I popped in for a quick breakfast before running morning errands. The coconut French toast was a hit. I liked that I could get my eggs scrambled with cream cheese. And the rosemary in the home fries added a very nice flavor. Service was as good as I recall from years ago. I really enjoyed my breakfast at Kitsch'n on Roscoe. We arrived on a Saturday morning and there wasn't a wait, which would be unheard of in other parts of the city! Another reason to love Roscoe. The service was pretty prompt and attentive. I had an iced coffee (pricey--I think it was $4?) and the pesto omelet. The pesto does not contain nuts. It was very tasty and my first experience with the pesto eggs trend! The hash browns were more crispy that I usually think of hash browns but they were really good. We also had the berry pancakes, which were pancakes with berries on top (not in the pancake which I prefer). The pancakes themselves had a really good vanilla flavor, not just the normal pancake taste. Parking was really easy on a side street a block west of the restaurant. read more

I think this place is super adorable. The artwork on the walls really brought the whole ambiance together. The service was quick and my server was really nice. I got the avocado toast with the rosemary hash browns. I'd rate the food a solid 4/5-- the eggs were perfect, it was a great amount of food for the price, and the textures were great! The only reason why it's not 5 stars is that I would've liked more rosemary flavor in the potatoes and no red onions (I'm more of a yellow onion gal); I felt like the whole sprigs of rosemary took away from it, and I would've enjoyed it more if the leaves were chopped up. Also for the avocado toast, I'll admit, I'm picky about them, but I would've loved to have more acid (I'm a sucker for pickled onions/radishes on my avocado toast). Of course, all the food opinions are just because I'm a picky eater, but this place is a must-go! Kitsch'n is one of my most favorite brunch places. It's not even near where I live but I'll drive out of my way to go. Kindest staff, bottomless coffee (and they're always offering and on top of refills) and the food is ‍ *chefs kiss* haha. Their rosemary hash browns are fresh, crunchy, hot and seem to be made fresh vs a frozen clump you might get from somewhere else. My favorites are the Two Deuces and a Jack and the Mac and Cheese. BYOB. Hello! Who doesn't LOVE bringing your own bubbles?!? We sure did! Our short and sweet little walk over to Kitschn surprised us with no alcohol options during the winter. No problem! There is a gas station next door. Even better my friend lives close by so we were able to grab a bottle of champagne. What's even better, no fees for bringing your booze. You have the option doctor up your champagne or whatever you bring. The restaurant supplies the glasses and juice options. Pretty sweet deal. Post tiki party we needed some grease, but didn't want to go overboard. Whole360 options exist here! Oh, but I didn't order from this menu. The food was very good, but I'd like to comment on a few miscellaneous items which, while innocent enough, drew my review down from 5 stars to 4: 1. The hot sauce bottle is very skinny. I almost dropped it twice! 2. The pancakes were so good that my date ate them all before I could get one bite! 3. One of the beans from my burrito fell on the floor! (2-1/2 stars) Our first impression upon entering was, "How cute." This neighborhood place is an ode to mid-century nostalgia and, as the moniker suggests, it's brimming with kitsch. The tacky, tawdry whatnots that people used to accumulate during that era are prominently displayed in cabinets and on shelves and walls. Oh my, what bad taste we once had! The retro theme extends to the furnishings and the comfort foods on the menu. The front room has '50s style dinette seating and a classic counter with stools, and a smaller back room serves overflow crowds and private parties. There are colorful patios out front and in the rear. The menu features traditional breakfast and brunch items, some with a 'contemporary twist.' It's augmented by a short list of lunch items plus daily specials. The food was okay but overpriced, and nothing we sampled really stood out. Fried Chick'n & Waffles ($15) featured two mini-waffles and one fried chicken thigh (an upgrade to "real" maple syrup will set you back another $2). The Tennessee Hot Fried Chicken Sandwich ($14) also featured thigh meat (white meat is not an option here). The 1/3 lb. House Burger ($9 + $1-$2 per add-on) and accompanying curly fries were just average. The best things about the sandwiches were the brioche buns. The servers were cheerful and accommodating, but even though we arrived before the lunch rush, our orders were not taken until nearly 30 minutes after we were seated. First of all, when I told the hostess that I needed a table for 2 but that my dining partner was still 5-10 minutes away and that I'd understand if she wanted to wait till our entire party arrived she was fine with seating me anyway. The waitstaff was immediately attentive with coffee. The menu included a lot of delicious looking options and, especially important to me, a lot of vegetarian options. The offerings are a bit unusual in the best possible way. The food is truly amazing as are the decor and patio seating. The reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that they never refilled my coffee throughout my entire breakfast.
