In the great debate between dogs vs. cats I vote dogs. However, this does not mean that I do not also think cats are great. My experience here with the cats was also great. They have happy hours where it's 50% off prices so instead of $14 for a 1/2 hour with the kitties it is $7. The price you pay with your reservation online includes unlimited free tea (mostly Japanese teas like Hojicha, etc.). I paid $14/person for a 1/2 hour with the kitties & thought the experience was superb! The space is super clean & tastefully decorated. You'll 1st walk into a lobby area where they have kitty art & an aroma diffuser with a nice subtle scent. You then enter the peaceful & sterile looking tea room where you pick out your tea & get pastries (not included in the price you paid online for the reservation). The tearoom has really great mid-century modern chairs & little tables. If you wish to just sit in the tea room & observe the kitties thru the glass you may. Their bathroom has a Japanese warming toilet with a bunch of fancy functions. It was my first time sitting on a warm toilet. You can bring the tea into the kitty room. Our tea wrangler was Maggie (Margie?) & she introduced us to the cats & gave us a run-down of the rules. If a cat is sleeping you are not to bother it but you may lightly pet it. I'd rather just not bother it because I personally wouldn't want to be touched if I were sleeping. Because they are all kittens, they are all still in training. Maggie reminded us not to let the cats make a habit of playing with our hands but instead the toys. She didn't want the cats to think that our hands were toys. About 1/3 of the kitties were sleeping while the rest were playing or walking around. The kitties are all adoptable. 26 kitties have been adopted since they opened. Cute novel idea. I am not so into cats, but if you like kitties or maybe are dating someone who likes kitties, this is a a cool option. The coffee is meh, but there are some yummy fudge treats to enjoy while watching kitties ignore humans. They do a pretty good job of keeping the place well ventilated, but my nose felt a little itchy. The employees give off a slightly pretensions hipster vibe which is a turn off for me, but I imagine most will feel right at home. Down with the fact that they help cats find homes. read more

We are proud cat parents of a rescue in Michigan. Our grandson, who lives in SF, is smitten with our fur baby, so we thought KitTea Cat Cafe would be a wonderful way to allow him to have some quality time with some kitties. We all had a wonderful time cuddling with the cats, petting them, and giving them some play time. Our grandson especially bonded with Mario and Belle. My friend and I came here the second month it was open (definitely make a reservation!) and it was a sold out hour. The staff are friendly and helpful in terms of explaining the rules and overall experience. The entire place has a very peaceful vibe and I liked that there was a tea room separate from the cats in case you are just looking to observe the cats. Their tea list is pretty extensive and I would come back just to try a few of their offerings. Obviously, being the crazy cat lady that I am, I could not wait to get into the cat room and dreamed of all of the cats crawling all over me. Unfortunately, since we're talking about cats, this was not the case. A lot of the cats were either sleeping (do not disturb!) or totally skittish. While I was expecting this to be the case, I did find the human to cat ratio to be a bit off. I feel like they should plan for some of the cats to be sleeping/hiding and therefore increase the number of cats per hour. I can't believe I'm about to say this, but here it goes (no judgements please): I was a bit surprised/upset about the unwillingness of other people to 'share' the cats. Let me explain - there were four kittens in the room that day, and clearly everyone went straight for them. There was a group of three women who scooped them up at the beginning and proceeded to hold on to them for the entire duration of our time. Yes, the full hour. I'm not going to lie, I was pretty upset. It's a very strange dynamic when you have to ask a grown woman to share her kitten with you. I ended up not saying anything and sending evil glares in their direction. I wish the attendants/staff members in the room had picked up on it and had worked out a better system in which everyone has time with the cats. Sadly, not being able to actually engage with the kittens kind of ruined the experience for me, and I'm not sure I'd go back. With that said, I think it's a wonderful idea and certainly a great cause. Just beware of the kitten hogs!! read more

I used to live in Japan where Cat Cafes are quite trendy, but since being back in the States, they are hard to come by, so I consider myself lucky to have found this one! While the entire concept of cats paired with tea is already completely adorable, this particular shop is a peach! From the website to the gift shop, everything is well put-together and exceptionally organized. The cats were playful and the tea was delightful. The actual cat room was a bit hot for my liking, and I'd prefer to be in there with fewer people next time, but overall, the experience was fantastic. Also, the cost is not at all "too pricey." You're basically making a $20 donation to a cat shelter in exchange for cat snuggles and unlimited, high-quality tea. People complaining about that probably aren't cat people anyway, so who cares about them anyway? 10/10 highly recommend, would do again. read more

went here with my friend yesterday to take pictures of the cats, the workers there were really nice. when you get there you're supposed to check in or something and then they let you into a room with cats, the worker in the room gave us treats to feed the cats. the cats were really calm and stayed still which made it easy for me to take pictures of them. read more

A few friends and I made a trip down here and I just had to come try this place out. I am obsessed with cats and was really looking forward to this. First off, the price is pretty expensive, but I felt it was worth it to at least try it out. The teas were really good. The cats themselves were mostly pretty shy and skittish, but that is to be expected since they are rescued cats and all. I was disappointed in the size of this place, however. The room is crowded and I didn't feel comfortable enough to play with the cats. There were way too many people in there all up in your space and it was annoying to have to deal with. So mostly, I just sat back and sipped on my tea. Either the place needs to be bigger, or they need to restrict the amount of people they allow back there with the cats. You are also allowed to adopt the cats, but the price is rather expensive. Why not just go to an animal shelter? Way cheaper and probably better cats. Overall, it was just an okay experience, but rather disappointing. Would I come back again? Probably not. Especially since the price is kind of expensive. For me, it was more of an "experience one time" kind of thing. I wouldn't feel like I was missing out on anything if I never went again. read more

KitTea definitely surpassed my expectations of a cat cafe. There is a large amount of kitties living in one place and they all seem like one big happy family more or less, it's clean, and all the KitTea staff I have interacted with are super friendly and helpful. I'm very relaxed here. The tea is delicious. The food is pricey, but that's probably San Francisco rents more than anything. I got a scone, which was served with butter, cream, and jam, and was delicious. I've been to this cafe so much that I've filled up at least one of their frequent visitor cards. All of the cats are very friendly, and the food is great. I definitely recommend making a reservation ahead of time, and visiting earlier in the day - for one, the cats are awake and want to play and snuggle. In the evening tends to be a huge crowd vying for the attention of a few interested cats, which means it gets somewhat stressful to jockey for position and try and get time with a cat. That said, these are cats and anything can happen at any time! I've had cats jump on my shoulders, lap, purr loudly, beg for my waffle... these cats are awesome and everyone should visit at least once. read more

What a fun spot to visit! They have 3 small rooms: an entrance/gift shop where you check in, the cafe with tons of goodies, and the cat room. You sign up for an hour & get that time to sip on unlimited green tea while playing with cats & kittens! Make an appointment ahead of time as there are only a limited number of people allowed in at a time and they do get booked up! The cats are all available if you fall in love with one, but you can also just sit and enjoy. It was so hard to walk out without taking one with me! read more

I know they're just cats and have no obligation to perform, but we went at 7pm and the cats mostly just wanted to sleep. Despite the cats being a little on the anti-social side, I had the best time at KitTea. The tea tastes good and the cat playroom is comfy and cute. I suggest buying one of the food packets to be swarmed with all the love the cats can offer. They also offer fun events like movie nights and yoga with the cats. This place is purrfect for cat lovers! I came here during my finals week of college and the cats were able to relieve my stress! The facility is also clean and I like how you can see the cats from outside of the cafe! It was really hard to say goodbye to the cats but i'll be seeing them soon!
