Went to Stonemill for the first time and it was definitely a cute vibe! Open kitchen so you can look around and cute cafe vibes but it is a bit small! You order before you get seated when you first walk in. Def gets busy after 12! We got the hojicha latte and strawberry latte. The hojicha was very nice and nutty. It came a little too unsweetened for my liking but they have sweetened out to adjust for your liking! I would def come back to get this! 8/10! The strawberry latte on the other hand was very overpoweringly flavored of the strawberry jam :(. I felt it tasted a bit artificial and didn't really let the matcha taste come through, I would stick to-the hojicha. 4.5/10 For food we got the fish sandwich and the pork katsu sandwich. The fish sandwich was decent, the cheese was cold but the fish was nice and flaky. I wish the fish skin was a bit more crunchy but I did like the slaw and sauce on it. 6.5/10 The pork one was soooo good and juicy. I've been wanting to try this place for a while because of all the hype. It was fine for a quick matcha fix but didn't blow me away. We got the strawberry matcha latte and the hojicha palmer which were ok but the Matcha Cream Pie was the highlight with the light lemony notes in the cream. The strawberry latte was giving tart thick milk and I could barely taste the matcha. The hojicha palmer tasted like Korean pomelo tea - I think they use that marmalade in it - and again I couldn't taste the roasty aromatic notes of hojicha that I love. Finally had the chance to try out this place! I have saved Stonemill matcha on my Google map for soooo long! I ordered their seasonal drink lavender matcha latte. I really like the lavender flavor, it adds some refreshment to the matcha latte. We also tried their signature dish- fish sando. The portion is pretty big considered the price -19 usd. Although I ordered a matcha latte to takeaway, clearly everyone else had a different memo! The café was full of couples eating, drinking matcha and chatting away - and the doors hadn't been opened for long! My matcha latte was very flavorful (grassy & bitter) and beautifully shamrock green. Oat milk was the only alternative milk so I chose it. The female cashier seemed hurried to take my order then shoo me outside - annoying since it was still chilly. During our first visit around Valentine's Day, the Chicken Katsu Sando was a standout--perfectly fried, non-greasy, and flavorful. The Strawberry Matcha Cream Pie was also excellent, featuring an airy texture and just the right amount of sweetness. On our most recent trip, we tried the new Teriyaki Katsu Sando; the addition of egg salad added a wonderful complexity to the flavor. While the original Katsu Sando this time was a bit smothered in sauce, the chicken itself remained impressively crispy. We also tried the Matcha Chestnut Roll, which was decent, though the standard Matcha Cream Pie felt much heavier and sweeter than the seasonal strawberry version we loved previously. First time trying this location and had high hopes because I've heard the quality of the matcha is amazing. However, in terms of experiences, I've heard very mixed reviews. One of my friends went a couple months ago and ordered a drink where they do the beautiful presentation of creating the drink in front of you. She recorded the presentation but when the server delivered the drink to her table, he slammed the drinks and said "Next time, ask before you record." She was in shock and apologized and deleted the video. However, when she went on their social medias, she saw that Stonemill Matcha had been actively reposting and promoting customer-recorded videos of the same presentation....... So upon hearing this, I kept my expectations low when I went to try this location. I ordered an Iced Ginger Matcha and Iced Strawberry Matcha. The wait was not too long (~5 minutes). However, the pickup experience was off-putting. The customer in front of me came up to the pickup window because she heard her name called and she received the email saying her order was ready. Unfortunately, there was another customer by the same name who had ordered food, and that was the order that was actually ready. It was a misunderstanding, but the server at the window snarkily said "This order is food." Even though the girl only came up to the window because her name was called and she received an "Order Ready" email.... Oh the cherry on top was that my ginger matcha was made wrong and had no ginger! LOOOOL. I gaslighted myself into thinking the ginger was just really light or something but upon reading reviews, customers were blown away by how strong the ginger was. The waiter kind of forgot about us, so we were left sitting awkwardly for a while before we flagged someone down, but not huge deal since they were full. I love the vibe in here, the cafe is great for friends and small groups. We ordered and were given a table which was really nice. However, the matcha was very chalky. For that reason I unfortunately have to give it this rating. I think that it was hard to drink at the end as the matcha sat at the bottom of the cup. The breakfast set came with soy marinated salmon belly and ikura, dashi turnip and pork, veggie tempura, crab chawanmushi, pickled cabbage and miso mushrooms served with seasoned rice w/crispy anchovies and miso soup. All the dishes complemented one another and the salmon sashimi and braised turnip and pork were especially yummy. I loved that overall it was a pretty light but very flavorful meal. I got a sparkling matcha with yuzu and brown sugar added to pair with the gozen which was refreshing with the hint of citrus and bit of sweetness. One of my favorite cafes in San Francisco and the best place for a katsu sando! I brought a group of out-of-town friends here on a Saturday morning and we waited about 30-40 minutes for a table. It was a lot shorter than the estimated wait so we were quite happy!! We each ordered a drink, some of my friends got strawberry matcha or hojicha, and I got the black sesame latte. HIGHLY recommend if you like black sesame, the flavor was spot on. We also ordered both the pork tonkatsu and chicken katsu sandos to split, so each of us could try a little of everything. There is a station where you can grab your own water and utensils, so you would think when you grab your water that you're supposed to get your own utensils too. However when our food came out, they brought out utensils so now we had extra utensils wasted and taking up space on our small table. Also their reusable water cups are tiny, so you either have to refill more times or take a larger plastic cup, leading to more plastic waste. The milk bread was soft and the yuzu sauce was light, citrusy, and appetizing. I also got the seasonal iced lavender matcha latte (May 2026) that had a strong matcha flavor and notes of lavender with actual flowers on the top.
