Very good hotel at an excellent price. We stayed over a long weekend in November in a king room for about $310/night with all taxes included, which is a great value in NYC right now. The room was clean and comfortable (including an excellent firm bed, which I'm picky about). The bathroom was well appointed. The service was friendly, and they even texted me to make sure we didn't want housekeeping service when we left the doortag out all day. The hotel has a great location for getting around the city or to the airports. There's pretty heavy tourist traffic on the street, but that's to be expected in midtown. If you're in a room facing the internal courtyard, it's extremely quiet which was a welcome surprise. About the only negative was that the fitness center was teeny tiny with barely anything in it. Would definitely stay again. read more

It's really hard to find a 5* rated hotel with the affordable price point for a 7 night stay but Kixby is right up there. Front Desk service was excellent. In fact, I ordered from 'To Good to Go' with a 9pm pickup next door at Angelina's but realized I could not pick up due to my Ranger Hockey game. Saul, on duty at the front/bellman that night offered to pick up my order. What a genuine kind gesture and that perhaps separates this establishments from others. They are there to help. I had a King Room and just outside my door was a staircase. I thought it would be noisy but actually has not been bad at all. The 'white noise' machine my daughter loaned to me is a dream! If you don't travel with one, you should. I have slept very well each night. Although the rooms are smaller (about 150SF), it's about on par for NYC and the bathroom, smaller too, has a walk in shower and ample room for comfort. The 2nd floor has an amenities room where you can get gourmet coffee, flavored water, and tea 24/7. Next to that is a small fitness center. There is a roof top but my visit in November has it closed. There is a penthouse that you can lounge at too but I haven't made it there yet. I booked thru Hotels.com but you can book direct too. I use my Hotels.com since I do get some deals and can pay at arrival rather than pre-paying. I always try to book a reservation that allows for cancellation without having to pay a premium. We stayed here in a King Bedroom over a weekend and it was a pleasant experience. First of all, the location is amazing; everything is in a walking distance. You walk fir literally 2 minutes and you get to the subway station. Macy's is very close; lots of food options; Korean food options right beside the hotel and many famous bagel shops at a walking distance. The staff are very friendly and helpful; they even changed our $100 bills for us. Rooms are typical NYC style; small, but clean and they have provided you with everything you need; shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hair dryer, iron, enough hangers in the closet. It's also quiet and comfortable. There's a rooftop bar, that's open during patio season. I definitely recommend staying here. read more

I stayed at the Kixby for a night this weekend, and it was definitely on par with the other midrange hotels in the neighborhood. I often find myself staying in this neighborhood when I visit NYC because it's so convenient (walkable home from the Theater District, with several subway lines easily accessible). They upgraded us when we arrived, so we had a two queen room. It was a huge room with a huge bathroom, too. The TV was perhaps a bit old; we couldn't figure out how to access the guide on the TV so just had to scroll channel to channel. But otherwise, the room was quite nice. The customer service at the desk was good; we spoke to them several times because we left our bags with them on both days of our stay. One perk of our stay was the second floor beverage bar. When we checked in, they gave us two water bottles, which we could use at the beverage bar. The bar had coffee, but what excited us was the sparkling water - three flavors to choose from. We used our hotel water bottles and enjoyed sparkling water throughout our stay. It might be a weird thing to get excited about, but it was such a fun perk for us. It made our stay here special. All of us loved our stay here, I slept so well on my own soft bed but hubby said his was firmer than he liked . The room was very clean & amply supplied with Keurig coffee & supplies . Nice tv and very roomy. Excellent air quality & no off smells . Excellent water pressure & temperature. Bathroom was medium size, tall ceiling was nice - rough tiled floor with rough tiled walkout shower so no worry of slipping. The towels were long & wide , big win for us tall folks! Could've used another stand alone dresser in room and maybe add more towel hooks in bathroom. We stayed in the family room with our adult son & he slept very well in his own room ! Excellent daily housekeeping service. Nice espresso, coffee & water room on 2nd floor . No breakfast included but plenty of eateries nearby . Very friendly and helpful front desk and maintenance. Clean and centrally located hotel with a rooftop bar/lounge(open all day, and doesn't require buying drinks). Rooms are clean, bed is comfortable and relatively large for NY standards, and the front desk service is great. When you book, be aware of the extra fees you'll pay when checking in(if you want a laugh, ask them what you get for the extra fees). They do have a water station and will give you a small water bottle you can refill, but it's on the 2nd floor only, so if you're higher up be prepared to spend time in the elevator and stairs. Again, the location is great for visitors who want to be walking distance from train stations and landmarks, Broadway, shopping and proximate to good restaurants, coffee and pastries. read more

We stayed at the Kixby for three nice in brisk January. The location is great. It's just off the 35th street metro and easy access to Penn Station and Grand Central. It's also walking distance to the shows on Broadway and lots of shopping. Macy's is just across the street. The hotel is nice. It's older and shows some signs of it with the wear on the windows and the cool temps coming off them, especially in the bathroom. I wish it had blackout curtains and provided ear plugs. Our room was overlooking the courtyard but we could still hear the sirens. I like that instead of water, they gave us water bottles and have a cool water filling station. They also have a fancy coffee bar...but it's only open 1-8 for coffee? Random. Least favorite was the $35 a day "resort fee." Why? There's no pool and no services. Just an extra $100 tacked on for no reason? The room was nice and big, but the closest showed how old the property is. Depending on rates, I would stay here again. read more

This was, without question, one of the most disgusting hotel experiences I've ever had. My room was overwhelmed by a vile, stomach-turning stench--an unbearable mix of rancid oil and grease that had clearly seeped in from one of the Korean restaurants attached to the building. The smell was so putrid it made the room uninhabitable. Even worse, management is fully aware of this issue but continues to assign unsuspecting guests to these contaminated rooms. It's not an isolated incident--it's a known problem, ignored for the sake of occupancy. A staff member sent to "inspect" the room physically flinched the moment he walked in, which says everything you need to know. If you have any sense of hygiene, comfort, or self-respect, do yourself a favor and stay far away from this place. This isn't just a bad stay--it's an absolute disgrace. read more

Checked in on a Friday evening. The check in was quick and easy. We were given an upgrade to a different room which was nice. Our room had 2 queen size beds and a huge bathroom. Also it had a large safe, and a refrigerator. The room appeared to be recently updated and very clean. We were close to the elevator and stairs but it was very quiet. We will definitely stay again. The front desk staff is friendly. The rooms are clean, with new laminate floors, high ceilings and a pretty big space for a Manhattan hotel. It's a good, solid room in a safe-feeling neighborhood, and is close to 42nd Street and Midtown attractions like the NY Public Library, Bryant Park and more! There's a small, cozy rooftop bar called the Look Up which is a good space to rest in between sightseeing. I like the hotel but don't love it. AWFUL! Worst customer service. I requested more information on parking, they never replied. I tried to cancel my reservation before my stay, because parking was really important to me. They refused to even try to help me because the "reservations team" wasn't on site. It was impossible getting in contact with the so-called reservation team. Elevator was hard to navigate, you have to hold the card and press the button in tandem. We took a lot of random elevator trips when the card didn't word. No hot water for 30 mins in the morning. Fridge on lowest setting, water was colder in room than in fridge. It's like when someone buys a home and flips it really quickly and you can see all the areas where they are painted over and old looking. The maids didn't change our bedding one time during our four day stay, and we know that because there was a tiny stain on the sheet in the exact place all four days. read more

Pretty solid location for NYC, right by Penn Station but a block away from the crazy crowds. The room was small but the bed was comfy enough. The hotel was slightly above a holiday inn level...they offered a continental breakfast and free wifi. Only complaint was that the bathroom had some wear and tear like paint chipping/wallpaper needed to be replaced and tiny scratches in the tub etc. Good bang for the buck and again, location was great. read more

Stayed here for several days in Manhattan recently -- for the price point, it was a bargain compared to a lot of other available options. Midtown location is very convenient, super touristy but you're a block or two away from any subway line in any direction to pretty much anywhere you want to go on the island. Rooms are relatively spacious (especially for NYC!) and beautifully appointed. Trash + basic refills etc. every day, but full turn-down service every 3rd night. Some elements could use some updating (heater/AC and fridge are both quite noisy, and windows + doors are pretty thin). Location of the hotel is fantastic. If you're taking the Metro, you can take the D Line and exit 34th & Herald Square. The hotel is literally like 3 buildings away once you exit the Metro. It is also right by Macy's. Time Square is a brisk 5 minute walk from Hotel Metro. Also, the roof top terrace of the hotel (which is open 24 hours for guests) has an amazing view of the Empire State Building. Upon arrival, the hotel receptionist was polite, friendly, informative, & humorous. (The gentleman behind the desk greeted me by my name as I walked up to the counter to check in.) The lobby of the hotel was a bit hot, as well as the elevator. We stayed in room 1010. It was located at the end of the hall. The room I booked was for a standard double. Even though this room was not one of the newly renovated ones, to my surprise, the room had a King size bed. Then room itself is rather spacious. It included a lounge chair and desk and desk chair. The end table next to the bed had a iHome docking station/alarm clock. The room also included a mini fridge. This room did not have central air. Instead it had a wall mounted A/C unit. Across the bed was the television set. There isn't a in room coffee machine, but downstairs in the lobby, there are coffee/tea available 24/7. The restroom was a bit compact. It had a heater unit attached to the bottom of the wall. The shower water pressure was a bit lacking, but it did the job. There is a wall mounted hair dryer for use. The bathroom amenities included shampoo, conditioner, lotion, body soap, facial soap, and shower cap by Gilchrist & Soames. On the 12th floor, there is a gym available for guests. It is also air conditioned. The gym has your standard treadmill as well as weight lifting stations. In addition, there is a water cooler in there if you need to hydrate during your workout. Complimentary breakfast and complimentary wifi is available. Overall, it was a pleasant stay and I wouldn't mind staying here again next time I am in New York. read more

The good stuff: 1) Location, very central and close to all stations that would travel to any of NYC's airports. 2) We arrived at around 8am in the morning and they were kind enough to check is in early. 3) Rooms are spacious for NYC, with nice high ceilings. 4) That bed - SO comfortable and soft! It balanced out the big negative of the hotel (street noise), as you'll sleep so soundly, the street noise won't bother you as much. 5) Fast free wi-fi. 6) Modern bathroom/shower. 7) Elevator and easy stair access to the floors. 8) Helpful hotel staff. 9) Effective air conditioning. 10) Right in the middle of K-town! Your at Macy's/Harold Square but off the main tourist street which is perfect for visitors. Extremely comfortable bed. A safe is located in the closet for valuables. Free wifi. Complimentary continental breakfast. Also, has a small refridgerator in the room for drinks etc. It can get a little noisy on the street because at night garbage trucks come by to pick up trash...The noise wasn't bad enough to keep me awake or awaken me after I fell asleep. But, you may want to request a high floor to minimize noise. Overall, I had a comforting and relaxed stay. I would definantly recommend this hotel. read more

I had a great stay here (4 nights) at the Metro and would definitely stay here again. I have stayed at some really bad places in my hotel experience, traveling for business with a company that likes to save money. My room was actually quite large compared to the Hampton Inn next door, where I normally stay. My room size was a King, I believe, and I could not tell if it was a newly renovated room or one of the older rooms. The bathroom had some wear and tear, but overall it was fine. The toilet is old and the chain broke during my stay, and the soap holder in the shower was crooked, so it could not hold soap. At least there as hot water, right? The window in the bathroom is very transparent, so I found myself taking showers with the light off or jumping quickly from the shower to behind the door. I do not think that other people noticed how transparent the window was, because you could see way too much if you looked out the window at other rooms across the way. The room closet was big, and the bathroom toiletries provided were very nice. During my hotel stays, I like to leave the DND tag on the door, so that the ladies do not clean the room everyday. I find that all they do is make the bed, give me more towels than I need and go through my stuff. Where, here that is not an option. Even if the tag is on the door, they will bust into your room to "clean" it. Even woke me up from taking a nap to do so. So the sign on the door does not work here. Another complaint of mine is that there are no electrical outlets near the desk, so I had to set up my laptop on the floor across the room, not able to use it on the desk. This was also the case with my i-phone, which did not fit into the docking station right next to the bed. That was across the room on the floor as well, with the laptop. You cannot surf the channels easily on the TV and there are two remotes, one to turn the TV on and one to change channels. Unless you memorize the channels, because they do not provide you with a list, you will surf down only. You cannot surf channels up, so after you have cycled through channels you can only surf down in number again, which was time consuming and often I was too tired at night to deal with it. My key stayed magnetized the whole time, even though I kept it in my wallet the whole time. Internet is complimentary and the password only cycles once a month, which is great. At some of the other hotels nearby, it changes every night at midnight, so you have to call downstairs every morning for the new pass code (annoying). There was a mini fridge in my room, which was a lifesaver at times. I wish that there was a microwave for guests to use I the dining room, that would have helped too. So I found myself eating cold leftovers at times. Since I stayed at the hotel on a corporate account, we were able to have free hot breakfast for a limited time at the Metro Café next door. Which was very delicious, but not worth the $13 they were asking for it, if it was not free. But, it was way better than eating their cold breakfast for most guests because the pickings were slim there and it was also a stare-fest. As a guest, you are allowed free coffee and tea during off-hours in the dining area, and to use the area as a meeting area, per se. There are also downstairs public bathrooms, which are convenient. The staff was very friendly and they are accustomed to storing luggage for guests and do so in a professional manner (unlike the Hampton Inn). You will also find that there is always someone there to help you with your car and even open the door for you late at night. There is still some of that old world charm at the Hotel Metro. read more

Just after getting home from our trip to NYC and I felt this place deserved a review. I usually don't like to give anything 5/5 but there's honestly not a bad thing I could say about this place. On arrival we were gave a free upgrade to the newly renovated 9th floor with a fridge full of free soft drinks, water and a free wine tasting event every night at 5pm-6pm. We had our own personalised welcome letter waiting for us in our room on arrival as well which made us feel welcome. Breakfast was complimentary and couldn't have been better, bagels, muffins, fruit, Coffee and cereals, everything you needed to set you up for your day of exploring the big apple. Location was amazing as it was close to Macy's and times square but was still on a one way street which wasn't too busy at night so you couldn't hear much noise from the city that never sleeps. There's also an awesome rooftop terrace to take in an amazing view of the empire state building. All in all I will definitely be coming back here the next time I'm in the city as it could not be faulted. Do it. read more

I found this hotel around 1998. It has changed so much over the years. I've always enjoyed it as the rooftop offers a wonder respite. An incredible view of the Empire State Building and you are within walking distance of the theater district, Macy's and lots of awesome restaurants. While I have been to NYC many times, this was my wife's first trip. She loved the hotel. Sure, it's not huge, but it was roomy enough for the two of us. Housekeeping worked on our schedule and they were terrific. There were a few nights we wanted to call it an early day and we landed and the Metro's bar. A very good selection of top shelf liquors and friendly bartenders, we liked the quiet intimacy of the bar. It's 2015 and I'll come back again to the Hotel Metro. When I'm in New York, I can't think of a better place for me. read more

This was my second stay at Hotel Metro. The first was 10 years ago and I had such a great trip I booked the hotel a second time. I think I let my nostalgia take the better of me because I don't typically go to the same place over and over; I like to try new things. The location is perfect though, right next to Macy's. I really had no idea that the size of your room depended on the size of bed you chose. Unfortunately we wanted to save $ and opted for the queen size bed which meant our room was the size of a broom closet, the bed barely fit . To late for an upgrade - the front desk was nice enough to let us check out another room which had a better layout but I've seen larger bathrooms on airplanes. The continental breakfast was a helpful start to the mornings... nice selections of the cont'l bfast staples. The Metro Grill however was not what I remembered it to be. We ate there once and our burger was dry and the fries were cold. Later during our stay we went to the bar and had drinks while waiting for friends. My husband asked for the drinks tall and the bartender made doubles. When we asked for our check and saw that we were charged for 4 drinks when we had 2 she snickered "tall means doubles." When I contested the manager stepped in and told us it was our fault for not knowing the difference. I left a $2 tip and later found out she adjusted it to $4. The rooftop bar was an addition since the last time I was there. I liked it the way it was before. It was enjoyable to walk up there with a bottle of wine and gaze at the Empire State Building and mingle with other travelers. Now it's so packed there's no sitting room, there's a bouncer, VIP area - it just seems dumb. read more

Quaint little hotel in a good location. It reminded me of the 60s, with the retro decor and movie star art. The rooms are small (my bathroom door hit my bed), but do the job. There is a great view of the Empire State Building from the rooftop, which has a bar in the warm season. I sat outside one afternoon to do work on a cold but sunny day. If you plan on working, this hotel might not be your best option. The wifi is very unreliable and I had to call twice to get it working again (one time they fixed it, the other time they couldn't). Room service is spotty as well. I left for half the day and it wasn't cleaned, so I had to call and request a cleaning and then leave again. The other day I came back and it was halfway done but no maid in site. I left to get them the chance to finish. Breakfast is light. Lots of carbs (bagels, muffins, cereal, etc.) but not much else. I had yogurt each day. There is some whole fruit as well. It would be nice if they offered some hot dishes. The staff was nice and is always there to open the front door for you, but it doesn't quite make up for the other shortcomings. read more

A block from Herald Square and Macy's, the subway is close, walking distance to Madison Sq Garden and The Empire State Building, the Hotel Metro was my home for this past weekend. Compared to the other hotels I've stayed at in the area, I would book here over some of the others again. Check In was nice and easy with staff that was polite and friendly. The room was bigger than most downtown NYC hotel rooms, and the waterfall shower made me want to stay in there until I ran out of hot water. I had a room on the 9th floor in the front, and I wish I would have had a better view than the couple in the hotel across the street from me who forgot during their.. uh.. "activities" that others could see in. Fortunately they realized it the second night and had their blinds shut. If you're looking for a place to stay, I'd suggest looking here. read more

This is a review of the rooftop bar only. The view of the empire state building is fantastic. It feels like you're sitting right next to it and it's a great place to bring out of towners for an up close and personal view of the building. It's not fancy; it's not sexy; it's not pretentious; it's simply a bar on the roof. Great for after work conversation. I ordered a margarita which happened to be quite strong. I don't know if that's normal or if I just got lucky but I'm willing to go after work again for another try. I didn't order any food because looking around at the food other people ordered I was pretty much convinced that I should go elsewhere to eat. Arrived few hours before check in, the held our luggage for us. So far so good. We come back 10 minutes before check in and are told room isn't quite ready. Again, that's fine we are a little early. We sit down and wait. That's where things take a turn. 3, yes three, other parties check in AFTER us. They are given their rooms with free upgrades. By the time we are given ours, it's on the highest floor, hidden in a corner. Definitely wouldn't recommend this place to anyone with certain levels of melanin. read more

Profiles by the front desk I went last week for hotel drinks at the bar and my father was visiting today. We were in the area so I took to see the bar since I enjoyed my time there. He sat in the lobby briefly because he was complimenting the couch when a guy from the front desk came and asked if we were guests. I said no I wanted to show the bar, he said we could go to the bar or would have to leave lobby. This would have been less upsetting if I had not been there the previous week and taken a personal call on the exact same couch because the bar was too noisy. Pros: Location is great, you're seconds away from 34th street station. You're across the Empire State Building and a short walk away from Time Square. Free basic breakfast. Cons: Pretty much..everything else. Their key system wasn't working for our room when we checked in. They told us to come back after dinner, still no key ready. Told us the next morning, nope! Finally got our keys at the end of the second day. The inconvenience should have been taken care of on spot and given us a room without issues.They gave us a wheelchair accessible room on the 2nd floor, basically the first floor of guest rooms. This room did not come with the beverages they said they'd provide. The bathroom has no tub, because it's made to fit wheelchairs. It's a bathroom with shower curtains in one corner to block the water from flying all over the place. You need to be careful of slipping on the tile. And the bathroom reeks like sewage. We had to keep the lights on to keep the ventilation running. They say they offer free wifi in all rooms, there was no wifi in our room. I told front desk about this and said they'd restart the modem. Well, we never got wifi in our room during our 5 night stay. They also thought it would be totally fine to let their guests stay next to a room under construction. At 8:30am, they'd start hammering into the walls. Thanks for the alarm, but no thanks. We even hung our DND sign on the door. What kind of hospitality is that??? What hotel would assume that this is okay? Absurd. I had to go down and complain for them to stop. I also asked if they had other rooms other than the second floor and they certainly were not accommodating at all, even after all the inconveniences. Not a single apology from the ladies I spoke with at the front desk. Clearly, they did not give a damn about how we felt. I was told that the hotel could arrange taxis for us to the airport. I asked the woman at the travel info booth how I would go about getting a taxi, she responded in the most condescending tone, telling me they don't call taxis in NYC, that they're not allowed to do that and that I'd have to go catch one outside or ask the bellman. She could have just politely directed me to ask the bellman. She didn't have to be so mean about something I didn't know. I booked this hotel for my family's first time in New York and I wish I didn't. The rates were lower than others and the reviews looked decent on the booking sites. But not worth it. Unless you know, you're getting a higher floor, don't do it. This hotel will give you a BELOW standard room for their own convenience and they do not do as they say. Everything about this building is old, especially the rooms on the 2nd floor. They were very unaccommodating, unwelcoming, and made us feel like CHEAP guests that didn't matter. I don't feel that we got our moneys worth during this stay and I'd rather pay more for another hotel. BTW, they have an open rooftop where everyone goes up to smoke cigarettes. read more

Here is a lesson I learned the hard way: Do not get let your stupid coworkers talk you into wasting an hour of a stupid gorgeous evening of happy hour walking to Hotel Metro, going in through the restaurant, asking some stupid smiley hostess if you can go up to the bar, having her count your four heads like children on a field drip, ripping off a tiny piece of plain paper with a "4" on it, being directed to an nondescript elevator, waiting nearly ten minutes for the elevator the size of a coffin, emerging onto a roof to be told by another stupid employee that you and your coworkers can stand at a table that has no stools while looking around at A TON OF STUPID EMPTY SPACE. Yes, it's true. All that retardation for a table in the middle of a fairly empty bar. Even worse, we waited around for five minutes for someone to come and serve us a few beers. When I got antsy and went to the bar, the bartender pointed at a sign that said something to the extent of "Waiter Service Only" and scoffed. The real kicker? I've seen better views.
