Visited this restaurant for lunch today and had a wonderful experience. The ambiance was very pleasant, the place was clean, and the server was super attentive--welcoming us right away. All the staff members were extremely friendly and warm. The food was absolutely delicious, with mind-blowing flavors. Every dish we ordered had a unique taste, and honestly, each one became a favorite. We tried the Fish Moilee, Kochi Special Chicken Curry, Malabar Paratha, Appam, Vellayappam, and Ada Payasam--everything was outstanding. It was especially kind of the chef to personally visit our table and check on how the food was, which made the experience even more special. We visited the place for dinner and ordered a host of items for the table . Service remains to be seen as it was slow and long gaps between courses . We were happily surprised at how delicious the food was at Kochi and how kind the staff is. This is probably the BEST South Indian restaurant in all of New Jersey. Every single item on this menu is absolutely phenomenal but the Crab Masala with the Malabar Paratha was out of this world. Authentic taste and unbelievable hospitality! Last night was our second visit to Kochi after a long hiatus. I must say I am so very impressed with every touch point of this restaurant. The lady who received the phone call, Monica was most courteous to my husband and accommodated us after a brief wait along with my Mum in a nice booth. The Chef/Owner Matthews lovely wife came to greet us. I think she was chipping in on a busy night. Mum and I, being vegetarians, ordered veg cutlets, appam and veg stew. Mum wanted a dry vegetable as well but there was none on the menu. Chef Matthew, despite having a full house with 2 seatings, made us some amazing bitter gourd of his own accord. Later when he overheard the adjacent table wish they could have tasted it, he brought over what remained in the kitchen for them! My husband was over the moon with his fish, curry and cassava. We packed and brought home all the leftovers! The only thing that I wish could improve is the pace of food preparation. The restaurant does warn you that it is not a fast food and that everything is prepped to order. However, the wait times were a bit too long. read more

We were greeted and taken to our table by the host. Very professional service. Ordered meen pollichathu, which is a market price item. This item is a fish( meen) served in a banana leaf. The masalas were spot on. The fish was cooked well. Spicy & brown on the surface and flaky & white on the inside. Ordered malabar parotta, small ( thick but soft) dosas called thattu ( street food) dosas, appam, fish moilee and chicken tikka masala. They were out of fresh lime soda, so got mango lassi and buttermilk. They were also out of kappa+meencurry as they were prepping that item for a big catering order. They have sadyas ( kerala traditional feast) on special occasions like Onam and Vishu, so planning to try that out. Best to reserve early as seating is limited. It is managed by a kerala family. However, this place EXCEEDED our expectations--an amazing okra in creamy coconut gravy, a very solid veg stew (with milder, sweeter flavors), an absolutely crunchy and crisp Gobi 65, piping hot idiyappams, soft palappams, and a last-minute order of paneer chili (upon the recommendation of the lovely hostess, Geeta) sealed the deal as far as our satisfaction went. This place was an absolutely phenomenal spot for some authentic Indian food that doesnt break the bank! Fancy decor inside with dim lighting really made the difference to our dining experience. They offered veg and non veg options. We started with appetizers which included cauliflower manchurian which was perfectly sauteed with the right amount of sauce and spice. I wish that they had entree portion sizes it was that yummy. We then ordered for our entree chicken tikka masala, dosa, garlic naan, and a side of tamarind sauce. The dosa dips were to die for. Chicken tikka masala was the perfect amount of creaminess with the chicken so soft I could cut the pieces with my fork. Kochi was better once. I wonder if there was any notion was that perhaps I couldn't handle a strong spice as the Chicken Lollipops and Gobi 65 were really rather uncharacteristically bland. They were both fried well but were not seasoned well. The Gobi 65 was particularly disappointing as they were smaller nibbles of cauliflower. I'm not sure if anyone prefers fried food this way but I definitely like larger pieces. A final dusting of salt before serving would have helped the flavor. The accompanying dipping sauce was forgettable. The Meen Pollichathu was small and really dry. Having remembered having a well prepared dish here previously, I was certainly looking forward to it again but I couldn't get over thinking my fish was prepared once before and prepared a second time for me thereby making it dry. This particular pomfret was also smaller, which meant there wasn't much meat to extract off the bones. The gravy for the Shrimp Roast was very nice. Good spice, nice heat, nice thin strips of onions that were sweated well. The medium shrimp was ok. The flavors in the gravy didn't penetrate the shrimp, which implied they were prepared separately and tossed in the gravy at the end. Saucing the basmati rice with this gravy certainly enhanced the rice. Giving Kochi the benefit of prior meals, I bumped up the rating just a tad to account for how I once remembered Kochi. Hopefully they can return to their prior roots on my next visit. read more

I live in the area and was looking for a good rice dish for dinner. I happened to find Kochi on the maps and was indeed craving a chicken curry and tikka masala. The flavor of both dishes were spot on and I asked for extra spicy for the special chicken curry and it definitely hit the spot, spicy & Delicious ! My brother loved it too. The only thing I would say is that they only gave one rice box for two dishes. Maybe because it is two portions combined. Keep in mind it also took 45min, so not a fast meal. I've never been so disappointed in a Indian restaurant like this one. The service is horrible waited over 1 hour just to get the food. Chicken Tikka is literally 5-6 tiny chunks of chicken breast. Not only did we wait 1 hour but the Tikka was cold. How???? Not only was the wait time crazy, but food was way over priced for a restaurant which isn't even fancy. We also got mutton briyani chicken briyani and dosa. They were okay not bad. .. but when u wait one hour for the food and are super hungry this makes you upset. They give Poland water bottles with plastic utensils and glass plates... Why not silver utensils and glass water with the price u are charging people ?? Idk ... Doesn't make sense to me.. .. oh right covid so glass plates is okay but not utensils got it! U can definitely get same or similar food or better in other Indian restaurants. Will NOT return. If u want to wait forever for ur food... Go right ahead..... FYI we were 2nd ppl to order in the restaurant.. arrived at 5pm... had to call our waiter to order the food at 5:15pm (he was no where to be found) then got food at 6:15pm. This place has some great hidden gems that you don't get at most typical Indian restaurants. Most Indian restaurants are actually Punjabi cuisine from northern India. The cuisine at this restaurant specializes in South Indian food made by a Nepalese chef. The chef is quite thoughtful and balanced with his curries. The coconut tames even the hottest dishes even when ordered extra spicy. The dry shrimp dish that we ordered was the only dish that was extra spicy as requested with the right amount of curry leaves and toasted coconut. The lobster curry was velvety and tender with a beautiful presentation. The crab curry was enjoyed by the table and I found it unique but tasted a little too much like paan for my liking. The Kerala curry chicken was one of my favorites and highly recommend along with the pomfret fish dry and the curry fish was also quite good and a Kerala staple. The chicken 65 was ok and I'd recommend the lollipop instead. Breads were all good and my preference was the hot tandoori roti. Goat curry had a delicious gravy but found the meat itself a touch chewy. The kulfi was amazing and the Gulab Jaman was also a hit. read more

I trusted this place would be top-notch... She was certainly right! There isn't anything I ate that night that was not insanely delicious! For dinner I had chicken Saagwala - loved the spicy, spinach-based sauce! With some garlic naan bread I was in heaven for sure! The food is just plain awesome. It's authentic Malayali food; no dumbing down the flavors and a good variety of choices on the menu. But the real reason for this review is for the service levels. They went above and beyond in what is required to do. We are from out of town and as we were driving through the NJ turnpike, being heavily pregnant, I got a strong urge for my native Kerala food. The restaurant was 15 minutes from closing time and I called in for a pick order. They offered to stay some additional time until we get there and once we got there they were kind enough to dine in- five of us! And even let us order some more. First of all, a shout out to Tara M is in order. She alerted me to this place that formerly housed a very decent Thai restaurant. My four star opinion is actually conservative, this is the best Indian place I have found in the area. I hesitate giving the fifth star only because there are several I have still not visited. And I probably won't be rushing out to try them knowing what can be found here. It's a small room, maybe 15 tables that were all occupied eventually on this Saturday night visit. The dim lighting conditions and my forgetting glasses prompted me to make a quick decision without really studying the menu. The aromas promised exotic and flavorful food, and made us even more hungry and in a hurry to taste it. I love dosa and knew I would try one, I chose Mysore masala which was slightly spicy and stuffed with potatoes. It was a little thicker than a plain dosa would be, but was still golden brown and crispy. What stood out the most was the trio of sauces that came with it. For an entree I ordered a fish curry. It contained kingfish which I would compare to swordfish or a similar firm fish. It was a good choice for this fragrant and spicy curry. I slightly regret asking for a spice level of 7, next time I'll see what 5 is. My dining companion ordered an eggplant curry that was a bit less spicy and had a totally different flavor than my dish. We both enjoyed our choices. Service was very friendly but they seemed to hold back some of our dishes possibly because of a miscommunication. I will surely return to try other items, and possibly even stop in for a quick dosa lunch( definitely a lunch sized portion). I foresee an update to 5 stars after a few more visits. Only way to describe our experience: An explosion of flavors in your mouth! We've been going here/ordering take out for a few years now and have not ever been disappointed. Some of their best items: Whole fish in banana leaf, Crab masala (high spice level), Chicken lollipop, Gobi lollipop/ manchurian, veg pakodas.. I can go on. But those are just some that come to mind. We both preferred the tikka masala over the saag. Nothing bad about the saagwala though, just not quite what I was expecting based on previous experience. The service was fine, but nothing special. An absolute gem. There are quite a few Indian restaurants in the area but this certainly stands out. The ambiance and service were excellent. The menu has some unique takes on classic dishes but also has the fan favorites done very well. The paneer tikka masala and gobi 65 were done well. For our entrees the okra coconut curry and saag paneer are must haves. We also ordered a chicken vindaloo which was probably my least favorite dish as the chicken didn't have much flavor to it. This was my first time trying this dish and enjoyed it very much. We also ordered the veggie samosas (yummy and a must to get at every Indian restaurant!). The samosas we're really big and delicious. For our main dishes, we ordered the fish biryani - BY FAR MY FAVORITE! huge chunks of tender fish just swimming in all the deliciousness of the rice!
