I arrived at the Delta hotel Sunday night looking for somewhere good, but not super heavy for dinner. This was like a half mile walk and I think I picked a somewhat sketch route, but inside it had a few folks. I sat at the bar and the bartender helped me pick out what to order - I picked the bulgogi bowl/white rice (all veg, no spicy no cry) + friend egg and gimbap Dak + cheese, like about $20. I'm not a big drinker but some people got this giant half watermelon drink that looked amazing. The bowl and gimbap were great but way too much for me. I didn't really know what to expect from some of the reviews but I thought if you qualified this as "pseudo fusion" Korean it was really great. The bowl alone was plenty, I do wish the rice was crispier on the edges. The gimbap was a large portion (in Korea it's rather different) and I liked it with the wasabi sauce I picked out. I am very disappointed in this place. I should have known it the moment I walked in the door. Besides the soju bottles and Milkis drinks displayed on the bar wall, there is really nothing authentic about the atmosphere here. There weren't even any people of color dining in, and I should have figured that from the reviews. I still gave it a chance, though. Maybe the food would be decent. Maybe there's an actual Korean staff working the kitchen. I ordered the kimchi jjigae stew because, well, you can't really mess up soup, right? Boy was I wrong. Not only was the soup way too salty, it had the consistency of marinara sauce. It was like someone poured way too much of the thick red sauce in there and mixed it with pork belly and a bunch of fat. It was nothing like the kimchi jjigae I'm used to having at actual Korean restaurants. My friend got the KBBQ lettuce wraps, and she even said her chicken tasted burnt and was too salty. It's like the restaurant owners just wanted to make Korean food more "palatable" to white Americans. I get it--that's fine, but don't go calling yourself authentic with the Korean characters on your menu. The service was strange as well. We waited hella long to be asked what we wanted, and then waited even longer to get our food. While waiting, I saw one of the servers give free dumplings to a white couple next to us (even though they already had their food) while my friends and I were starving. (Btw, my friends were black and I'm Asian.) I also saw my server drop rice on the tray and then pick it back up with her bare hands onto my bowl. To make things worse, the bathroom is absolutely disgusting and wasn't even stocked with toilet paper. I ended up just holding it in. I have never given anything lower than 3 stars because I like to support small, local business, but it doesn't feel like this place is run by Koreans at all. Let me start of by saying this bar/restaurant is not good for a a party of 6 or more. Place is dark and dirty. Service was extremely slow and there was only about 4 other people in this restaurant. The bartender or our waitress was very slow. She took a long time to take our order and our food took well over 45 minutes to come out. Bulgogi Ribeye had so much going on in the tiny bowl it was served in. The ribeye tasted disgusting like was it even really ribeye? I took two bites and said no I can't eat this. The chicken wings however was pretty decent but anything deep fried is pretty good anyways. Definitely not worth coming back to. Maybe having Korean roommates and being from NOVA just set my exceptions really high, but Richmond doesn't have many Korean dining options and the ones it does aren't impressive. Sadly, J Kogi could not make up for the void and I will have to continue my search. --Korean Squid Kimchi Pancake-- Definitively the worst Korean pancake I've ever had. It was majority just black yet they still thought it was okay to send out and serve. Big red flag for me. I took a tiny bite just to see if it was edible but the pancake was..squishy? After burning it, you'd think it would have some crisp to it. Terrible. --House Bowl-- I got a pork belly bowl with white rice, all the veggies, a fried egg, and the Tae Yang (wasabi hot mustard sauce). The flavors of the bowl without the sauce were pretty standard and it's a pretty measly portion of pork belly that they give. The Tae Yang sauce packed a really powerful punch and will clear out your nostrils if you put on too much. A little bit of this stuff certainly goes a long way and it helped to perk up the dish and keep things interesting. --Korean Chicks-- The redeemer of the meal, their double fried chicken wings. Though pretty pricy ($8 for 5 pieces) they were nice and crispy on the outside but the meat was tender on the inside. The Cry Baby sauce was flavorful and packed a good amount of heat. They were supposed to be served with pickled radishes, but those were never brought out despite a reminder after our waitress placed the plate down. --Service-- Service was really slow and by the time our waitress got back to check up on us, we were pretty much done eating and didn't want to wait around for them to try to remake the pancake. We decided to just cut our losses and leave. I don't know if it was just a bad night for the kitchen, but none of the staff seemed to be that attentive to the patrons either. Bibimbap has become one of my favorite foods in the last few years. We had a bit of time before going to Finding Neverland down the street, so we made a stop at J Kogi. --Food: We started off with Kimchi Scallion Pancakes before our bowls. While a bit oily and having a tendency to fall apart, they were actually quite tasty. They had a nice scallion and kimchi flavor. I had never seen chicken katsu in bibimbap before, nor have I heard of bacon kimchi fried rice, so I got both of those. I also got egg, cucumber, and bean sprouts added as well. The bowl was a lovely sizzling temperature (the only real way to eat bibimbap in my opinion) and charred the edges of the rice in a tasty way. I'm not sure I was getting much of a bacon or kimchi flavor from the rice, but it was admittedly good. I had gotten a spicy sauce with it called No Spicy No Cry, which was reminiscent of gochujang, (or may just have been gochujang), and it was tasty. I will say, the katsu overall was a bit dry in a bowl with other mostly dry ingredients, so if I came again I would probably get a different protein, but it was still good. My fiancee got Dak Tori, which was the non-breaded chicken option I should have went with, and it looked good. She got carrots, bean sprouts, cabbage, and white rice on hers. She liked it, and that chicken is more of a traditional bulgogi chicken, so if anyone is on the fence on what kind of chicken they want, my vote goes for the Dak Tori. --Cost: Bowl was about $10 with an egg. Two of those and a side of pancakes fell in the ~30 range. Decently priced. --Atmosphere: J Kogi has a bit of a hipster vibe to it. There are some eclectic drawings on the chalkboards ranging from what I believe is Haku from Spirited Away to octopuses with life rings as suctions. The music selection when we went was quite interesting. One minute it was a series of country songs played at a REALLY loud volume, followed by about three rap remixes of the Nintendo Mii theme (seriously). -- Service: Staff was nice enough and food came reasonably quick. --Overall: J Kogi seemed pretty good. I know that traditional bibimbap has purple cabbage, bean sprouts, carrots, and cucumber like J Kogi does, but an increasingly large number of Korean places also offer other choices like onions, mushrooms, and other vegetables, which I missed here. If I lived closer to J Kogi, I'd probably come here more. I personally like a couple of the other Korean places around town a bit more, but I'd still recommend checking it out. read more

This is truly a place to get an American-ized bowl of bulgogi bibimbap. The bulgogi wasn't flavorful. It was hardly marinated at all. Bulgogi should be sweet and spicy. It was neither. We paid more for an egg and extra meat. At $16, the portions were a bit lacking. The braised short ribs were delicious though. I was disappointed that, although we were paying J KOGI customers, we couldn't use one of their tables outside to eat our meal because we placed a takeout order online. With the current climate, it's hard to decide whether it's wise to eat in until you arrive. The employee told us we could eat at a table outside if we placed the the takeout order once we got there rather than online. Not really sure why. I got the dak tori chicken bowl, and it had a good amount of heat but plenty of other flavor to back it up as well. I like my K food nice and straightforward (=authentic and traditional), and this place was hit and miss for me, although the miss left a hole in my heart :( ++ Veggie kimbap: this is a rare example where a modern twist on traditional pays off, because the seasoning in the sticky rice and the red cabbage made for a surprisingly delicious treat I didn't expect. For me, THIS would be the reason for me to ever come back here. 5/5 Korean chicks: the slightly off-putting name aside, these double fried chicken wings in soy garlic dressing were solid, although admittedly not as magical as Bonchon chickens. The soy garlic dressing was a little salty as well. 3.5/5 It's a different vibe for a K venue, and I kind of liked this clubby atmosphere. Service was great, as explained further below. - - Spicy rice and fish cake: this was beyond disastrous, and I still don't know what 'that (monstrous) thing' was. The boiled egg was missing in action, and so was any flavour that was recognizable. I rarely take food back, but I had to express my frustration to the server lady, and she handled it very well. Long story short, I ended up canceling the order, and the server lady brought out a plate and dropped it on our table without saying a word. Cool, chill place on the corner, easy & free parking. Last time I went, they were just getting their liquor license and the ownership changed but doesn't change the atmosphere. I haven't eat at this place in over 8 years and I was not disappointed. We wanted something different for dinner so we got the beef bulgogi, katsu chicken and the daktori chicken all three were amazing! I will leave the kimchi out next time but overall I wasn't disappointed. read more

My group of 8 came here because it was walking distance from the convention center and we were hungry after watching my nephews karate tournament. This unassuming hole in the wall is to die for! My husband and I ordered several appetizers with a side of rice while the rest of the party ordered an array of sides, appetizers, and entrees. We all tried each other's food: wings, braised short ribs, Kimbap, japchae. But there were so many other things we wanted to try. We also ordered artisan bubble tea (alcoholic) which was delicious. They have several concoctions to choose from. We can't stop raving about the food. But the service was equally as great. The waitress was so patient and accommodating to our party, and the owner came to assist us when we had a question. The place is small but inviting. I don't see what anyone wouldn't give this place 5 stars! I was extremely impressed by everything. Richmond is a cool little town and this is definitely a gem! The pricing to servicing size ratio is awesome. The service and workers were extremely personable and pleasant. The food was DELICIOUS. Like wow. I can't even speak on any of the meat options because I had the tofu but from the pictures they all looked amazing. If you're looking for a lighter option subbing the white rice for the scallion salad is a great option because it's nit just spring mix. The assortment of carrots, sprouts, cabbage, and Sewed made my tofu bowl so so so good. The Spivey sauce isn't as spicy as I thought it was gonna be so it ended up being perfect. My Bf got noodles with tofu and his bowl came with sooooo much. They are very generous with the amounts of protein on each bowl which was a relief. They played Star Wars in the background of the resturant and decorated with some cute lights to set a great ambiance. The bar is super cute and the prices are great. Who knew I could get some greatly priced Korean food right in the heart of downtown Richmond. I love a great Kimbap roll right after class, and they are always made fresh. With COVID, there is reduced seating in the indoor area, but they have expanded to allow for some outdoor seating as well. If you just want to order takeout, then you can go to the window outside by Soul taco. The staff are very friendly and put up with my requests of extra pickled radish every time! For the menu, I have went through all the kimbap options, and my favorite is the katsu and the veggie. They are BIG, so be prepared to get full from half the roll. I also get 2 sauces - the FWA and the No spicy No Cry one. This way you get a good spicy and sweet option. I've also tried the Katsu Chicken rice bowl, and I would definitely get that at the restaurant rather than to go. All in all, I love the place and usually am back every week lol. read more

Got to try this place during my Asian Fusion week crave. Came here during lunch time, be sure to know how to parallel park for street parking. It took a short bit, but we did get seated and service in a reasonable time. Since it was the last week of the week, I decided to get their house bowl that consist of pork belly (choice of protein), kimchi bacon fried rice (base), all of their veggies (kimchi, pickled white raddish, red cabbage, soy bean sprout, carrots, and cucumbers, and with two sauces -Fwa (sweet honey mayo) and Tae Yang (wasabi hot mustard). Check out my pic! When I got my dish, I was impressed with the sight of the house bowl and the delicious scent of all mixture. The mixture of the two sauces in my choice of house bowl was just amazing and on point. I honestly swear that the closer you got to the bottom of the bowl, it got hotter - no complaints at all! It was a lot for me, I had to bring home leftovers - which tasted pretty amazing the second time around haha. Overall, the lunch experience that I had totally exceeded my Korean food craving more than I expected. The pork belly was def a good protein selection, but I like to try one of their chicken next time, possible with an egg on top. My boyfriend and I love Korean food, so we were excited to try J KOGI, but I'm not sure that we'll be back. The atmosphere is kinda grungy and a nice place to chill for a late night. The prices are also pretty reasonable, so not a whole lot of complaints there, but unfortunately that would be two "pros" of our night. We were optimistic about a lot of the menu items since they seemed to be a creative take on traditional Korean ingredients, and this is complete personal preference, but there wasn't too much that we ended up really loving. We started off with kimchi pancake, japchae, wings, and the bulbolgi ribeye house bowl with an egg. We waited for a while and saw that others that had been seated after us had been served and no server had come by to tell us anything about our order. Finally she came by and apologized for the wait, saying that because our kimchi pancake broke, they kitchen was making a new one. We appreciated that we finally got an update and just asked if we could go ahead and get everything else in the meantime - we hadn't asked for the pancake to come out first, so we were still wondering where everything else was. She agreed so we were eager to get to eating since we were getting hungry. At that point, we had been waiting for half an hour. About 5 minutes later, she brought out the kimchi pancake. She apologized again and said that it would be taken off our bill, which we were appreciative of. But another several minutes passed before the rest of our food came out ... which confused me because that meant that ALL of our food was taking a long time, even though only the pancake was compensated for, and even though the waitress had agreed to bring the other food out in the meantime. When the server provided the house bowl, she said that she had forgotten if we ordered an egg. We said that we had and she said that she'd be right out with it. She really should have asked that in advance before the bowl was brought out if she had forgotten. She came back to ask how the bowl was and we said that we hadn't started since we were waiting on the egg. They brought the egg out on a separate plate, which was also odd to me because I really felt like they should have brought the entire bowl back to the kitchen, added the egg, and served it to us as it was intended to be served. We decided to order one more thing at the end and went with the pork belly ssam. I just don't think pork belly is meant to be in a sushi roll lol. It was dry, and it just wouldn't hold up together in a roll. Overall, I would give a 2.5 if halves were an option, but I just couldn't justify a 3. Again, the servers we encountered were friendly and nice, but we felt that the service in terms of wait time and communication could have been better. I think this is a family run business. I went there because the reviews have been great. I was met with a lovely bartender who I suspect was related to the cook, who seems to be her mum. The mum spoke Korean and was incredibly hospitable and nice. I couldn't help getting excited over the prospect of having a home-cooked Korean meal by a true Korean mom!! I always watch mukbang videos on Instagram, and always wonder what red noodles they eat. This place offer that (spicy noodle something something). It was good! And the short ribs were so juicy. It gave the umami flavor when I ate all ingredients in 1 bite. I also ordered japchae. I was craving for it, so it satisfied my soul although the spinach was a lil too salty for me. The Kimbap, bibimbap were good too. The only downside was the sauce. I wasn't a big fan of it since I prefer to eat them either plain or with soy sauce only. My friend had the tofu soup.
