But I have to say that Lou Edwards has created what now stands as the most impressive piece I've ever commissioned. This was a very significant project for me: I wanted a special gift for my husband, Jim, to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Jim's special motif is armadillos... he collects them, and he likes to wear silver armadillo pins on his jeans jacket. When we met almost 25 years ago, Jim had an armadillo-ouroboros tattoo on his shoulder... a tattoo he designed himself. And twenty years ago, for our wedding, I'd had a tiny white-gold armadillo lapel pin created for him. So for our 20-year anniversary, I had the idea of commissioning a handcrafted silver and gold pin based on Jim's tattoo. I approached Lou with this project idea, and a couple months later, he turned it into a beautiful reality. Lou somehow managed to make it not only exactly like what I asked for, but even better. He made it even more beautiful and three-dimensional than what I'd had in mind. I adore the 3D details of the little Norse-Viking-ship style head of the armadillo, with the matte gold squiggle and ruby eye, and adorable teeth! The entire thing is so beautiful and perfect that I am at a loss for words. And my husband Jim really loves it, which is the most important thing. I also want to point out that not only is the outcome amazing, but the process of having it created was great, as well. Duvall Jewelers provided me with several updates and previews of how things were going, and was able to get my concerns addressed as the project went along. I got the sense that this was a labor of love for Lou. I appreciate the care and enthusiasm he brought to this project. I love supporting other artists. And if I ever have another custom jewelry project, Lou Edwards will be my first choice.

Mark is a jewelry designer and spent a couple hours educating us on diamonds, their ratings, the diamond market, and the process he uses in designing custom rings (using a CAD program) for casting. Mark also explained that most ring sets bought retail are mass produced unlike the French Cut setting he was designing for us, custom cutting for each stone setting. I gave Mark a budget to include one wedding set- after tax. Mark selected a beautiful stone and designed an amazing set of rings that came within $16 of my budget. No up selling. Just a gorgeous wedding set with the best value solitaire for the budget I wanted. My fiancé has a beautiful engagement ring on her finger that compares to other rings in jewelers' cases that are priced substantially more. She also knows that her setting was designed for her and not mass produced. We did look at a few jewelers in Bellevue before scheduling with Mark. I'm glad we did. It gave us an idea of what retail rings cost and we got an idea of what we wanted. Of course those jewelers want to sell you something they have in stock that day. That was tempting for my girlfriend. But we are glad we waited the extra time to have something specially made. And I was glad to save 20-30% compared to what I figured I was going to end up paying at a retail shop.
