I've commissioned a number of custom jewelry pieces over the years, from half a dozen jewelers, mostly in the greater Seattle area. And, for the most part, my experiences have been good. But I have to say that Lou Edwards has created what now stands as the most impressive piece I've ever commissioned. This was a very significant project for me: I wanted a special gift for my husband, Jim, to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. Jim's special motif is armadillos... he collects them, and he likes to wear silver armadillo pins on his jeans jacket. When we met almost 25 years ago, Jim had an armadillo-ouroboros tattoo on his shoulder... a tattoo he designed himself. And twenty years ago, for our wedding, I'd had a tiny white-gold armadillo lapel pin created for him. So for our 20-year anniversary, I had the idea of commissioning a handcrafted silver and gold pin based on Jim's tattoo. I approached Lou with this project idea, and a couple months later, he turned it into a beautiful reality. Lou somehow managed to make it not only exactly like what I asked for, but even better. He made it even more beautiful and three-dimensional than what I'd had in mind. I adore the 3D details of the little Norse-Viking-ship style head of the armadillo, with the matte gold squiggle and ruby eye, and adorable teeth! The entire thing is so beautiful and perfect that I am at a loss for words. And my husband Jim really loves it, which is the most important thing. I also want to point out that not only is the outcome amazing, but the process of having it created was great, as well. Duvall Jewelers provided me with several updates and previews of how things were going, and was able to get my concerns addressed as the project went along. I got the sense that this was a labor of love for Lou. I appreciate the care and enthusiasm he brought to this project. I love supporting other artists. I brought in a gold ring that my great-grandfather always wore. It had been badly damaged and thinned out over his long lifetime. Duvall Goldsmiths did a full restoration, adding gold where it had been worn away, resized it to my finger, and polished it all up -- it looks very distinguished now! I also brought in six watches that needed battery changes and got those done at the same time. He was very thorough and was even verifying each gold that I had with his tested to check the carat on the gold. He even appraiser my engagement ring and told me it was a really quality lab diamond. I've taken 2 rings to Duvall Goldsmiths. The first one was my wedding ring. One of the prongs had worn down to almost nothing and it was fixed perfectly for a fair price. The second was my husband's wedding ring. After a 50 pound weight loss, his ring frequently fell off and we'd find it on the floor! Duvall Goldsmiths worked with us, successfully inserted 2 "bumpers" but still the ring was too large. They then had us stay at the store while the jeweler resized it down for the perfect fit. Very happy customer. The jewelry store sits on Main Street in Duvall and the store has limited space, which makes for a cozy setting. The staff was very friendly and helpful. I had read all the reviews online and decided to go in and meet Lou and his son in law Austin. I had a non running watch on my wrist, my mother's wedding ring that I wanted appraised. I had no intention of leaving them. I walked out of there trusting them with my mother's wedding ring for appraisal and to fix the prongs that were thin holding the diamond. Haven't had it off for 50 years. I also walked out with a new battery in my watch which is running fine now. And he even threw in fixing another ring I was wearing that was pretty warped from wear.
