The sweet potato tempura was really well done, one of my favorite appetizers not too oily but good with beer. The namesake ramen is loaded! So much tempura with soft shelled crab, shrimp, and even the enoki mushrooms! If you're a spice head you'll love it, because it's on the spicier side of ramens in NYC. Perfectly seasoned and soft inside, they basically melt in your mouth. I'd order this again without hesitation. For ramen, I had the Kumamoto Ramen ($18). The thin white noodles were great, and I appreciated the lighter, more delicate broth -- not overly salty like some other ramen spots. I get it. Eating ramen is supposed to be an intimate experience. Eating ramen here felt like a loveless marriage. The ramen is pretty and tastes good, but the whole experience felt processed and rushed. I got the vibe that they were going for an authentic Japanese ramen bar, and while I think this comes close to that, sometimes you forget that this is the United States and people in this country still feel a need to feel loved and valued. Let's start with mine... it was okay, temperature is lukewarm, just enough not to blow some air to cool it down. Broth is fine, could taste the bonito broth. This was a small, packed-to-the-brim, popular restaurant. Very cute décor and cozy vibes, I really wanted to love this place! Basic ramen prices are around $18, which is reasonable. Unfortunately, the items we tried were mediocre or worse. Maybe it was just an "off" day since they have a lot of usually great reviews! The kara-age chicken here is really bland. It's like the chicken is completely unseasoned... just breaded and fried straight. If you told me they forgot to marinade the chicken that day, I wouldn't be surprised. They need to add more ginger, garlic, soy sauce, and salt into the marinade and let the meat soak those flavors in for a while before breading and frying. You'll have to try to rescue this menu item with the mayo-based sauce they give you on the side. The tonkotsu ramen was strange. The broth was weirdly thick in texture. I'm guessing they ran out of broth and had to stretch it with water, but then it became too runny, so they had to add starch. It was not rich in flavor at all as you'd expect from tonkotsu broth, just thick. Have you ever had the canned cream of chicken by Campbell's? It was like a watery version of that, but pork instead of chicken. The chashu pork meat was also tough and not melt-in-your-mouth soft. They needed to cook it longer over slow heat. The Kumamoto ramen was better, but not excellent. It also had a thickness to the broth, but at least the flavor was present. The black garlic oil likely saved the taste of the broth in this one. I was disappointed in this place, but I went there about half an hour before closing on a Saturday. It's possible they were just low on the good stuff. I have a lifelong fascination with Japanese pop culture - partly my Hong Konger upbringing (massive resemblance to Tokyo) and partly because I am a massive nerd. Between scale models, games, posters and videos there's also appreciation of costume play (cosplay) - I can appreciate someone putting in the extra work to look like Makima from Chainsaw Man or Snake from Metal Gear Solid (my wife will say that I have a passing resemblance to slim Taro Sakamoto from Sakamoto Days). When it came to being successful with Cosplay, details are important and it's a sign of love and respect for the subject matter to put in that extra effort. Why make that analogy? Well, here is Kohoku-Ku, a ramen shop in Hells Kitchen that tries so hard to be a legit ramen shop (complete with vintage signs, maps novels and manga covers) but fails to get the basics right. Kohoku-Ku 港北区 refers to the Port North ward of Yokohama. It's a bedroom community and home to the Shin Yokohama Ramen Museum. It's also the birthplace of the Yokohama Iekei 家系 "house style" of of ramen, a hybrid between rich porky broth of western Japan and the light shoyu chicken broth of Tokyo, made in family owned ramen shops with names ending in 家 (-ie), or house. Our establishment (a mini-chain of 2 with another location on the north side of Chicago) reference heritage from Yokohama. So, either they can make a good bowl of Iekei (like Michida Shoten on West 46th), or are they like the multiple stalls of the Shin-Yokohama ramen museum food court? The thing I do at ramen shops is try figuring out which "host" style that it claims heritage on. What kinda soup, noodles, tare (finish) and accompaniments? Ichiran and Ippudo are Fukkoka Tonkatsu, Menkoi Sato is Sapporo, Sentouka is Asahikawa, and Nishida Shoten is Kumamoto. Minca lean on Tokyo chicken shoyu but can whip up Iekei on demand, and their Billyburg store can do even more. Kin Kamen on Midtown West serves a tasty bowl despite Thai ownership, close to Hataka style. Tabata next to PABT serves up a tasty coconut ramen adjacent to Burmese Ohno Khao Swe, run by a Burmese chef who can also do a mean Kumamoto complete with Ma-yu (garlic oil). So what's Kohoku-Ku's "host" style? Their namesake ramen is a chicken-bonito broth (so more Tokyo) with a shio tare (huh?), moderately spicy (?) with soft-shell crab, tempura, enoki, bok-choy, yuzu, ajitama egg with thin wavy noodles. Their chicken shoyu ramen soup contains truffle oil on thin wavy noodles, and their Tonkotsu (creamy pork bone) is also thin wavy noodles. My first question would be...truffle oil (something that most Japanese will not be okay with) The next is on the soup and whether it's good. Well, I had the Kokuku-Ku (their flagship noodles) and the first words that pop into my head was...Nong-shim, as in, the soup tastes like flavoring from Korean instant noodles, complete with chile flakes. It was not quite the thing I was looking for...and the experience went downhill from there. The gyozas were not Hanetsuki "wing" style like at South Tokyo joints, and the Japanese curry was a bit more watery than expected. Eeeh, the decor throws you back to the Showa era complete with references to various regions, but it's like a lady who dress up like the murder-mommy assassin Yor Forger from the manga Spy Family, complete with the Thorn Princess costume...but fails to shave her legs and completely kill the vibe. When me and the missus look at the food on the table we somehow can't help feel disappointed by the place. i dunno, stick to Nishida Shoten or Menkoi Sato? read more

It's a small ramen shop tucked away in Hell's Kitchen on Ninth Avenue, so it's a bit out of the way, but it's worth coming out to try their signature Kohoku-Ku Ramen. They give you a QR code to scan to view their menu and you order with the staff member. We got the following: Japanese Sweet Potato Tempura ($8) - essentially purple sweet potato fries that comes with a spicy mayo dipping sauce. It's a good go-to appetizer. Corn Korokke ($7) - Three crispy deep fried corn croquettes. Also a pretty good appetizer to snack on while you wait for your ramen to show up. Kohoku-Ku Ramen ($25) - This is the reason why you came here. Who tops their ramen with an entire soft shell crab and shrimp tempura? This place does. Served in a spicy shio flavored chicken and bonito fish broth, the broth itself is pretty decently spicy, hence the three peppers on the menu. The thin noodles is prepared well. Other toppings include enoki mushroom, bok choy, scallion, yuzu, sesame seed, soft boiled egg, and nori. Yeah, this thing is loaded. Arrived here on a Saturday at around 6pm. After a half hour wait, we were seated. There are only around 6 tables and a few individual seats, so the place gets packed very quickly. Service is rather quick and ramen is fortunately one of the fastest dishes to eat, so the line does move somewhat fast as long as you're in the front. The menu has a variety of enticing appetizer options for sharing. We were looking for a quick meal so we opted for only the mains, acknowledging the plentiful small dishes like yakitori selections, takoyaki, and agedashi tofu for next time. I got the Kumamoto Ramen, which had a flavorful pork bone broth and firm noodles (only right way to go with ramen if you ask me). The ingredients for this ramen were all interesting, especially since you truly cannot go wrong with chashu pork, shishito pepper, bok choy, scallions, and a soft boiled egg. Yet, the small portion size left me wanting more. Once you are done with the one pepper, one bok choy, 2 very small pieces of pork, and egg, you really are wondering where your $18 went. I've had better and cheaper ramen all around St. Marks, and left with a fuller belly. My friends got the Miso Ramen and Kara-age Chicken Curry Rice Donburi. Despite my friend getting it spicy, the Miso Ramen lacked flavor and was the least favorite of the table. It is on the smaller side (~8 small parties), so if you want to check it out, try to go on a day when you can get there before a rush. The ambiance is typical of other hole-in-the-wall ramen places with the dim lighting and wooden decor. If my friend hadn't ordered appetizers, I would have given Kohoku-Ku 5 stars for being the first bowl of ramen I have ever finished in my life. My friend and I both got miso ramen ($18), and my friend got the agedashi tofu ($7) and sea salt edamame ($6) as appetizers. The ramen had chewy noodles, and the miso flavor was delicious. My favorite part of the dish was that there was not too much broth, which may be an unusual preference, but it really worked for me. My only critique of the miso ramen was that the egg didn't have a lot of flavor (though it was cooked well). This became more of an issue when my friend told me to try the edamame, which also lacked flavor. Be warned that the agedashi tofu is extremely hot when it first comes out, so make sure to give it some air if that bothers you. For NYC ramen, pricing is excellent, especially since I finished the whole bowl! Service was highly attentive, though could come off as a bit pushy. It did have a slightly spicy kick to it, but nothing really hot. The meat they used was okay. Nothing too soft to bite into. As for the soup, it tasted a lot more heavier/creamier than I expected, which I didn't mind. And I felt like they gave a good portion of noodles. Overall, it was a good dinner. The ramen was decent, but this place showed a few points for improvement, which have ultimately led me to give it a slightly lower rating. Firstly, the ramen... I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen, which was a classic ramen with a rich and creamy broth. It had the typical ingredients including lots of ramen noodles, chashu pork, bamboo shoots, one piece of bok choy, one soft boiled egg, and one piece of nori. They were all pretty standard quality, although I will note that the chashu pork was very dry and kind of flavorless. This was decent value for $17. The place itself is decorated in a very cute way resembling a small Japanese ramen shop, with Japanese-style lighting, furniture, and decor. Because it is small, there are not many tables for seating though, although we had no problem finding a table for two on a Friday night. We did notice that the table kind of smelled like an old rag though, probably from the cloth that was used to wipe it. The rest of the restaurant seems fairly clean though. The staff were okay friendliness, although they seemed unusually eager to take away my bowl even though I was clearly still working on it. After a not-overly-long amount of time, they just asked us to pay the bill and leave, saying that they had another party coming that needed the table, even though there were no other customers waiting in sight. Overall, if you are just looking for a quick and decent ramen bowl, Kohoku-Ku Ramen could be a good spot, but don't go out of your way to come here over the many other ramen alternatives around. read more

The service was friendly and attentive, ensuring our food arrived quickly. what we ordered: Shishito Pepper: Blistered and Seasoned with Yuzu Salt and Fresh Lemon Juice These little blistered peppers were a cute starter, but could have used a bit more char and a brighter lemon kick. While enjoyable, I wouldn't necessarily order them again. The flavorful broth was a touch light for my preference, especially in the Kohoku-Ku Ramen. Taiyaki: Pandan Leaf Custard Served warm and fresh, the filling was incredibly delicious, but definitely on the smaller side - not ideal for sharing. Think Japan.....izakaya. 7 tables and 4 seats at the bar. The wait isn't long and tables turn over quickly. There was one server. She was quick managing all the tables, serving, clearing and setting again. Extremely efficient. The menu has a great variety. Ordered sweet potato tempura. Crunchy on the outside soft inside with nice aioli and flavor 10/10. Takoyaki 3 to an order. Prepared nicely good flavor 8/10. Karage was a bit soft 4/10. Spicy ramen was good but broth seemed disjointed like spice was added on top at the end..very separated flavor 7/10. Shoyu ramen had karage, dumplings, marinated egg, bok choy ...broth was mildly flavored but still tasty 8/10. Overall I enjoyed my meal. Would definitely visit again. Great vibes. read more

Pretty good! Ordered delivery - the mackerel rice bowl and shoyu chicken ramen. The food did not arrive at all hot, but it could have been on the delivery person making too many stops. The ramen broth had great flavor without being too salty, and the noodles had a really good texture. The toppings were lackluster. The mackerel itself again was awesome, but the bowl just came with some plain rice and a somewhat sad salad. The bowl overall could have used more flavor. read more
