Kin Ramen is one of our favorite spots whenever we're craving authentic Japanese ramen in NYC. It was just okay! My friend ordered the salmon sushi and I'm not a salmon fan but for the price the salmon was good. However, I got an array of different sushi pieces and they were all just bleh okayyy, nothing was pre-sauced and although it did seem fairly fresh, nothing had my eyes rolling in the back of my head. Was disappointed that they were out of the green salad with ginger dressing because that's always the highlight of my meal so I ordered the the miso soup which was also just average. You can see the sushi chefs making sushi on the right hand side when you walk in which is nice and the tables are arranged in a decent manner where you have some room to breathe so overall- a nice average spot with fair prices for what you get. read more

Got a few items off of the extensive Happy Hour menu (Garden Salad, Cucumber Salad, Gyoza, Salmon Mango Roll) and combined them with a few main dishes from the regular menu (Tonkotsu Ramen, Salmon Lover, Roll Combo B) - all good. I came here on a Wednesday at about 5:30 with two friends and we were seated right away. They have plenty of space and bar seating because they have two floors. They were definitely pretty busy though Apps: The karage and the sweet potato tempura were so good. Both came out so hot, the karage was juicy and tender with a spicy mayo dipping sauce and the sweet potato tempura was like sweet potato fries with a ranch like dipping sauce. So good, we ordered it twice! The garden green salad does come with some seaweed salad on top, but pretty basic Sushi: the sushi is pretty standard and I think we came at their prime busy time so the rolls were not the best, but our second round (ordered a little later) was better in terms of quality and even just how they looked/rolled We added avocado to our salmon roll, which is an extra $3, and you can tell immediately that the avocado was not ripe, it was that hard rubbery texture. I really like coming to Zen for their happy hour specials (4-8pm every day, including weekends!). The prices are really good on a wide variety of food and drinks, but I primarily come to eat their yummy sushi rolls. Each roll on the happy hour menu is only $5.20 (with card, $5 if cash) and comes with 6 pieces. The fish always tastes really fresh, and some of my favourite highlights I've had are the salmon (and spicy salmon) and the yellowtail. The service is very friendly and prompt, and while the restaurant is always bustling, there is plenty of space (they have two floors), so I've also never had to wait to be seated here before. I actually tried the ramen here once before (maybe 8 years ago or so... just in passing...) so I don't have a strong memory of it haha but it seems to be quite tasty just looking around at other tables! I have grievances, but let's be clear that it's not about the food. My pan fried gyoza were delicious and my 2 roll lunch was fine (except the shrimp tempura roll was not rolled tight enough). Many aspects of the service, however, we're disappointing. If you're going to call something an appetizer, it should arrive first at the table, leaving your guest time to enjoy it! I was halfway through my sushi when the gyoza arrived. Stop hovering and obsessively taking dishes and paper. It's intrusive. I didn't ask your staff to join me for lunch, they shouldn't be there all the time. Perhaps this is considered excellent service in Japan, but this is NYC. Clean and comfortable environment. The food is good, I ordered the salmon teriyaki over rice. It was crispy like potato chip crisp and saucy. I enjoyed it very much. The lychee mojito was also well and not too strong, but gave a buzz. My bestie got a spicy california roll, shrimp tempura roll, and mango mojito. They enjoyed the spicy California roll as it was delicious. I tried the shrimp tempura which was nicely fried and not too heavy with the sauces. I dont usually order the sushi though because I am allergic to avocado which is usually a main component in sushi. While the food we had here was all pretty great--karaage, shrimp tempura roll, seaweed salad, tonkotsu ramen, and chicken and pork katsus, I'd have to say what stands out to me was the extremely pushy server who knew we spoke chinese (which she did too), yet spoke to us in English and another table in Chinese. It almost felt like she wanted to listen in to our conversation unnoticed, and was just really strange. She kept trying to get us to order more, pointed out a bunch of dishes she "recommended", and just made the entire experience weird. My family usually orders a good amount of food for the four of us, so usually our experience at restaurants is waiters asking us if we are sure we can eat that much, as opposed to this server trying to get us to try even more stuff on their happy hour menu. Our 7 items were definitely sufficient enough for the four of us. I rarely find servers to be pushy, but even my dad (former server himself) commented on it afterwards. On the food end, the tonkotsu ramen was very standard yet delicious, with great pork and a well marinated ramen egg. It was a good size drink and it was strong. I got the chicken teriyaki Bento box as my meal. The chicken was crispy and had evenly distributed sauce on top. It was delicious.
