The fish did not taste fresh to me, and the rolls were oversized, with far too much rice and very little flavor. What made the experience worse was the manager's attitude. I had asked to leave my phone at a charging station, and when I returned to retrieve it, a waiter directed me to get it. As I was doing so, the manager approached me and sharply told me I needed to ask first. I explained that the waiter had just directed me to retrieve it, but she repeated, "Usually, you need to ask." Her tone and facial expressions felt rude and dismissive. I understand having rules, but a little courtesy and willingness to listen would have gone a long way. Wow, this place has gone completely downhill. There was a time I was frequenting Zen daily during work and I am utterly shocked at how bad it is now. I suppose I shouldn't be SO shocked considering they haven't really raised their prices in a decade which is insanely abnormal. The sushi is really terrible. The rice was completely overcooked and created a pasty, gummy consistency that made every bite the complete wrong texture. The fish quality is questionable too. The unagi is inedible and irony. The spicy tuna is mystery meat mush. The shrimp tempura is a total gimmick. They pack a roll with avocado and cucumber and a measly piece of shrimp. I really liked the food here but just be patient because they are always so busy and you may need to wait a little for staff to come around. We ordered the Fried Shrimp Shumai for appetizer and it was really good. We then had Tuna Lovers sushi plater and my husband had the Spicy Tonkotsu ramen and loved it (the ramen came with a boba drink so that was a nice little extra)! Kin Ramen is one of our favorite spots whenever we're craving authentic Japanese ramen in NYC. The food is consistently delicious, the broths are rich and flavorful, and everything we've tried has been fresh and satisfying. Both came out so hot, the karage was juicy and tender with a spicy mayo dipping sauce and the sweet potato tempura was like sweet potato fries with a ranch like dipping sauce. So good, we ordered it twice! The garden green salad does come with some seaweed salad on top, but pretty basic Sushi: the sushi is pretty standard and I think we came at their prime busy time so the rolls were not the best, but our second round (ordered a little later) was better in terms of quality and even just how they looked/rolled We added avocado to our salmon roll, which is an extra $3, and you can tell immediately that the avocado was not ripe, it was that hard rubbery texture. Found this place when we were out walking. We were cold and hungry and decided to try it on a whim and WOW! The noodles were delicious! Every bite was perfectly flavored and we all enjoyed what we ordered. The staff was very friendly and welcoming also and they answered ALL our questions very patiently! The place is cute and fairly large for a place in NYC. The atmosphere is pretty casual but it does lend itself to a nice romantic date option. I almost forgot to take pictures of the food as it smelled so yummy we just dug in and were hit with a flavor punch of deliciousness and warmth! I really like coming to Zen for their happy hour specials (4-8pm every day, including weekends!). The prices are really good on a wide variety of food and drinks, but I primarily come to eat their yummy sushi rolls. Each roll on the happy hour menu is only $5.20 (with card, $5 if cash) and comes with 6 pieces. The fish always tastes really fresh, and some of my favourite highlights I've had are the salmon (and spicy salmon) and the yellowtail. The service is very friendly and prompt, and while the restaurant is always bustling, there is plenty of space (they have two floors), so I've also never had to wait to be seated here before. I actually tried the ramen here once before (maybe 8 years ago or so... just in passing...) so I don't have a strong memory of it haha but it seems to be quite tasty just looking around at other tables! She kept trying to get us to order more, pointed out a bunch of dishes she "recommended", and just made the entire experience weird. My family usually orders a good amount of food for the four of us, so usually our experience at restaurants is waiters asking us if we are sure we can eat that much, as opposed to this server trying to get us to try even more stuff on their happy hour menu. Our 7 items were definitely sufficient enough for the four of us. I rarely find servers to be pushy, but even my dad (former server himself) commented on it afterwards. On the food end, the tonkotsu ramen was very standard yet delicious, with great pork and a well marinated ramen egg.
