    Classic Tonkotsu Ramen

I went to Ichiran for lunch during a quick day trip to New York. Ichiran is different from other sit down ramen restaurants because you order and pay first and then are seated. I was alone so I was placed in one of the individual stalls. As it was my first time I got a quick explanation of how the experience works. The water station is centrally located within the area I was sitting and was self-serve. My ramen and soft boiled egg were bought out quickly and all questions I had were answered. Ichiran only serves tonkatsu style ramen which is one of my favorites. The broth was rich and flavorful and I really appreciated the spicy and sweet topping that comes standard (unless you ask for it to be removed). Overall I had a great lunch experience and would definitely return to Ichiran.

This visit was a lot better than last time I went. My daughter and I lined up before they opened and was third in line. We ordered the Classic Tonkotsu Ramen, priced at $24 a bowl. A little steep, but worth it. We went with the default recommendations on the touch screen. The previous time, the ramen was served in a box shape bowl, but this time it was in their regular ramen bowls. The noodles were cooked a perfect al dente- so good. The broth was great, but not super rich. It was a quite satisfying bowl of ramen. Hit the spot on a rainy Monday. There are so many great ramen places in NYC, like Ippudo and Totto Ramen, but if you are close by Ichiran, it's worth the trip.

Ichiran is a must-stop for me whenever I'm in New York. This was my first time at the Times Square location. Of course, there was a little bit of a wait, but as always, it was very worthwhile. For those who have never been, the line is a bit of a two-parter. You wait first to order your food. Then you wait to be seated. Once seated, you hand the chefs your receipt and they bring out everything for you. This service feels genuinely like what eating ramen is like in Japan. The dividers between seats are optional, so if you're with friends you can open the dividers up and chat away. Everything is fast, delicious, and honestly a great experience overall. We even came on a hot day--still worth!

It's like half the portion of scallions and mushrooms. What happened?!??

Love ichiran in Japan and love it in NYC but when did they started getting cheap with the add ons? It's sad that we getting less and less here. I will try the one on 31st and see if they got cheap with the scallions and mushrooms. Thank god the bowl of ramen is still good and nothing changed with that.

This almost exactly mirrors the Ichiran experience in Osaka, down to the individual booths and presentation of the ramen behind the curtain. Only difference is the Japanese eat quietly versus us loud Yankees in Times Square. Noodles and broth were excellent. Wait time wasn't too bad on a busy summer Sat night.

I will preface this review by saying I've had Ichiran at two locations in Japan, and one in Hong Kong almost ten years ago, and when we booked our trip to New York, I knew we were going to visit the Times Square location- no question about it. My partner and I visited twice during our two night stay. The first day, we arrived on a Saturday at 3:35pm and I thought because it was mid day there would be no line. I was wrong. The line ended up taking about 15 minutes to order at the kiosks, and about another 10 minutes to be seated. The wait was very similar on the second day, even though we arrived around 6pm. The first day, we separated our tickets and the person behind the counter took our tickets. We ordered 2 Asahi Draft Beers, 2 Classic Tonkotsu Ramen + Topping Set Combos, Matcha Pudding, and a Premium Yakibuta which ran about $108.88. During our meal, we also added on 2 Matcha draft beers @ $12/beer. My highlight for this meal was the Premium Yakibuta. This is not something I would regularly order, but I'm so glad we did. It was tender, flavorful, and complemented the ramen really well. Another thing I really enjoyed was the matcha pudding. This was creamy, and had a great matcha flavor with a bouncy texture. On this day, I felt as though the broth tasted a little watery, but as I got down to the bottom it tasted like I had remembered. Maybe I just didn't mix it enough. On the second day, we ordered two Classic Tonkotsu Ramens, 2 draft beers, 2 eggs, and a matcha pudding. This ran us about $86. This time, I changed my customization to reflect a richer broth and it hit the spot! I'm thinking that's what I used to order when I visited Japan because it tasted exactly the same. I'm glad I was able to perfect my order, so that I can remember it for next time. Eating in the little cubby is its own experience. I personally enjoy how if you need something, you click the button and the staff comes to you. It's also nice to be able to open the partition wall if you want to eat with your party. Unpopular opinion, but I preferred to sit in the basement because they have little hooks to put your bags next to your legs rather than on the wall behind you. Overall - 10/10 experience and I will gladly eat here every day if I could!

Ichiran is my favorite ramen shop in Japan and the only time I've had it was when I'd visit. This was my first time trying a location in the states and I am happy to say that it tasted basically identical to the shops in Japan and the ambiance was also the same. I came in with a party of 2 on a Thursday at 1pm. There was a line but the line went by quick. When you walk into the restaurant, you pre-order at the touchscreen to the right of the entrance and later when you're seated you give the order receipts to the server at your window. The food at this location is obviously going to be pricier than it is in Japan (came out to around $60 for 2 people), but it is SO worth it as you can't get Ichiran anywhere else besides in Japan.

Ichiran ramen was one of the first ramen chains I visited when I was in Japan. The employee that was the lead host was super helpful in establishing where to go as well as what to do in order to get our food. The establishment itself is small, but cozy and intimate with its rectangular-like design.

We decided to visit here during our NYC trip since we enjoyed the few locations in Japan and "revisiting" memory lane. The place, service, and food were highly identical to the locations in Japan. I do feel like it is very highly priced though. I don't think I'll visit a location again in the states as I rather would get their take home kits (discounted from a grocery store) and make it at home.

Ichiran in Times Square was such a great experience. It really felt like an authentic Japanese ramen spot right in the middle of NYC. The whole setup -- ordering your ramen exactly how you want it and sitting in the individual booths -- makes it feel unique and very traditional. The ramen itself was delicious. The broth was rich and flavorful, the noodles were perfect, and I loved that you can customize everything, especially the spice level. Being able to bump up the spice made it even better. Overall just a really fun, authentic ramen experience. Definitely worth checking out if you're in Times Square.

This is always one of my go to spots to enjoy the perfect bowl of ramen. Perfect to eat at solo, but I've also visited with friends and family as well! This is a no tipping establishment and the service is as attentive as you want it to be. Upon entry you place an order on one of the kiosks. You're given a ticket and then they assign a booth seat to you. When you sit down you give them your ticket, they confirm your order and then they bring it to you when it's ready. Water is self serve. I like the have purse/bag hooks under your booth and place to hang up your jacket on the walls. Food is always consistent! I usually go with the recommendations notated on the kiosk for levels of heat, garlic, firmness of noodles. Love a jammy soft boiled egg, be aware you have to peel this when you receive it. They do a pretty brisk take out service as well. Join the rewards program if you plan to frequent. I'm a fan!!!

By far this has been the best ramen I have had. I've had this location saved for a while now but never had enough time to stop by.... Finally made it in last Friday and I was impressed. Surprisingly, there was no line when we arrived around 6pm so we got seated not long after arriving. Once seated though, it got to be really busy. I ordered the original ramen bowl and just asked for my noodles to be on the firm side. Ordering is easy as you do it all on a tablet before you get seated. Once seated, we waited for our food. Our server was nice and she helped us right away. Even though we could not see her, she seemed very friendly. The ramen bowl was delicious. It was served very hot and the noodles were non stop. The meat was tender and flavorful, so delcious. Bathroom was clean. I totally recommend this place, it will not dissapoint!

fast and delicious! we waited for maybe ~30 mins to order and get seated on Memorial Day! broth was very creamy! choose a spice 3 level and it was perfect, hint of spice but not overwhelming matcha draft beer was pretty good, there's a good matcha taste yet also the beer taste matcha pudding was super silky and smooth. i was expecting a solid texture pudding but it's really soft. matcha taste was amazing!

How can I make a reservation?

We're a first come, first serve restaurant and don't take any reservations. The wait can be long, especially during dinner and the weekend. I suggest visiting between 2 PM - 5 PM for shorter wait times.

Is this restaurant open or closed due to covid?

It's open, you need to show ID and proof of vaccination when you come in.

The restaurant has booths divided into sections, tailored for eating alone, with a smooth and efficient experience. The dividers can also be removed for couples and groups dining together!

We don't have any gluten free ramen on our menu at this time.

Some of the staff has been here for a while, which tells me it is a well managed operation. Quality is still the focus at TONCHIN. Table comfort is still not. I love to bring my children when not crazy crowded so they can also enjoy one of the best ramen restaurants in the world. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but I haven't found better yet. Summer soupless ramen with perfectly chewy noodles and slightly spicy sauce is a great addition. The vegan ban ban kinoko as well as its chicken version are great also during summer. The maguro is delicious but I don't find it as satisfying as the noodles. Mind spiciness level for the younglings. In the winter, the spicy tantan or Tokyo ramen always hit the spot. Fish bun has been improved slightly over the years but thank ramen-sama, it is always as messy to eat as the first time I tried it 7 years ago. Desserts are surprisingly delicious. Typically Japanese ramen restaurants lack in that domain but not here. The Tokyo banana is perfectly crafted: creamy crunchy tasty. The shaved ice are great and super fun to eat. We started with the pork belly appetizer which was recommended and stated on the menu indicating it's their featured dish. It was the biggest disappointment as it was extremely fatty with large chunks of fat, while the lean portions were dry. It didn't look very appetizing. The noodles were cooked perfectly al dente, but the broth was much saltier than I would have preferred. The pat of butter felt unnecessary and made the broth overly rich without adding much depth. The chashu was on the small side and also quite fatty and I assume it's the same as the appetizer but was sliced instead of in large chunks. The marinated egg had good flavor, although the yolk was a little more cooked than I typically like. Another thing is the pork belly appetizer came with an egg. Overall, the noodles were the only highlight of the meal and the rest were very underwhelming. It's definitely not a place I would recommend.

This spot delivers the kind of authentic paitan that reminds you why people used to line up on cold sidewalks just for a bowl. I ordered the Paitan Ramen Deluxe, and it genuinely lives up to the name. The broth is silky, rich, and comforting without being overly salty which is exactly what a proper paitan should be. The bowl comes loaded: tender shredded chicken, seared chashu, marinated soft-boiled eggs, fresh scallions, bamboo shoots, and a sheet of nori that ties everything together. Every topping tastes intentional, not just filler. The texture balance is what really stands out fatty chashu that melts, shredded chicken with real flavor, and noodles that hold up beautifully in the broth.
