Rating: 4.2 Came to try this Michelin bib gourmand tonkotsu ramen place in NYC. I saw them on social media and looked into and was planning on visiting when i was in NYC area. This one is located in NYC Manhattan 36th street. It's not very noticeable but has large door with its name on it. Inside is small space with bar counter, table and seats and kitchen at the end with dim lighting with pop music. We made a reservation but looks was it wasn't too busy since it had just opened at 11:45am. We were quickly sat down and looked through the menu with scan code. They offer variety of Japanese and fusion dish like tebasaki chicken wings, buns, rice ball, and few noodle dish like hiyashi chuuka cold noodle, ramen, tsukemen, and mazemen. We ordered few appetizers like chashu rice ball, mushroom buns, and i got spicy tan tan ramen and my partner got the miso ginger ramen. Chashu rice ball came with chashu, sauce, rice wrapped with nori. It's more like a sushi roll than a rice ball but it was ok. The pork was a bit dry and was messy to eat. Although it has omikuji/fortune slip inside that you pull out which is a unexpected fun addition to the dish. I ended up getting daikichi which means great luck. Mushroom buns were fluffy, flavorful and tasty despite vegetarian option. The spicy tan ramen was spicy, creamy and savory. The ramen came with half egg, few slices of chashu, menma, ground pork with spicy miso which you mix together. The broth is combination of rich, spicy and creamy and pretty strong sesame flavor. Noodles are thicker and chewer than what i'm used to. Chashu was nice and tender. menma was ok not very flavorful. Overall a solid ramen but not particularly special. Really delicious ramen! Walked in on a weekend night and waited about 60 minutes to get seated. Once we were seated though, the service was very fast and efficient. We tried the smoked dashi ramen and spicy tan tan ramen. Both were great. I enjoyed the subtle smokiness of the dashi broth and thought it paired well with the clams. It definitely felt more unique compared to a traditional ramen. The spicy tan tan ramen had a much bolder and classic flavor profile. The pork was tender but not fatty. We also shared the matcha kakigori, which I may have enjoyed even more than the ramen because the matcha flavor was so strong! There is also a red bean filling in the middle. They also offer a selection of signature cocktails. We tried the yuzu margarita, which was refreshing, and the Japanese cocktail, which I liked for the fresh celery and elderflower flavors. Got seated at the bar after lining up ~15min before opening on a Friday morning. Smoked dashi ramen was AMAZING. The broth had so much seafoody depth, which makes sense considering we found many clams in our bowl as well! It was a bit lighter than a tonkatsu broth, but a bit heavier than a shoyu-base. Our reservation allowed us to be seated quickly and the menus are on a QR code with a second card will with specials (only one which was the cold noodles) the size of an uno card, but it was very cute. Seems like they are also know for their cocktails but I wasn't able to partake since I wasn't feel too well from traveling~opted for plain tapped water! After my first visit: This is my favorite ramen restaurant on the planet. It's my perfect restaurant - but not because of the ramen. Because of the desserts! First - Tonkotsu (pork) ramen was perfectly balanced. The broth was deeply flavorful but not heavy, almost like an 80/20 hybrid of tonkotsu and shoyu (soy sauce) ramen. Noodles were springy and not overcooked, and the roasted pork had a slightly smoky flavor and was flavorful itself, not just protein and texture like many other ramen joints. We also had the edamame appetizer - super flavorful and addictive, and we wound up ordering a second one (for our party of four) after devouring the first one. Now here's why it's my favorite ramen restaurant- my favorite dessert is banana pudding, and Tonchin's signature Tokyo banana dessert is an elevated banana pudding that makes magnolia bakery look like amateur hour. Plenty of fresh banana and a carmelized banana on the side with a balanced pudding that's not too heavy - this is peak banana pudding. So it has my favorite ramen and favorite dessert. But can it do better? Yes. It can also have...my second favorite dessert! Tonchin has excellent shave ice desserts that reminded me of Korean bingsu. I have been wanting to try this ramen spot for a while now and I'm glad I did. The restaurant can be easily missed since it doesn't look so big outside. However, once you enter, it's a cozy long place with a few cute booths and tables. It ends with an open kitchen. The service was super quick and efficient! I ordered the Tebasaki 8pcs chicken wings that were peppery and not as crispy as I expected but still good. The only thing minor issue is that it wasn't completely seasoned evenly as you can see that only one wing had the red pepper powder on my picture. However, it was still flavorful. I got the spicy tan tan ramen and enjoyed it. The tonkatsu broth with miso was flavorful without needing to use an excess amount of oil, and the noodles were fresh and chewy. I also appreciated that they added a fair portion of mixins that complemented the rest of the ramen dish well. I will say that I don't think the ramen was super special or a must try, but definitely solid for satisfying a craving for ramen. The restaurant is quite busy, I went on a random weekday night and had to wait about 25 minutes for a party of 1; I believe a part of 2 was at least a hour long wait. I was seated at the bar and it was quite loud and hectic. I guess my biggest gripe with Tonchin is that I'm not a huge fan of waiting for restaurants that I don't think are super special. We came here with our 1 year old and they accommodated him so well- he had a small bowl plate and utensils! Expecting a Midtown experience, I am overall happy with the result. The prices, the hip hop music blaring behind the bar, the punk look of some of the servers and the bartender, this is not a put-on. Okay, any noodle will work well here. The broth clings to the noodle well and you get a massive depth of flavor if you eat the pork with the noodle. We didn't try any cocktails, but they had a wide selection of cocktails and sake. Everything we ordered was really good. Ever since their hyped debut just under a decade ago, Tonchin has ascended into one of the city's most well known ramen eateries. Meaning a "place to come together" in japanese, much of the praise comes from the fact their Tokyo style noodles mirrors the classic bowls from its original roots in Ikebukuro, Japan. Opened by the son of the founder, their NY location was honored with a Michelin Bib Gourmand only a couple of years after opening. During their busiest nights, it's a reservation only type establishment. Similarly to any ramen place in Japan, the space can be considered tight and narrow, while the vibes are modern and intimate. Large parties are a must for reservations, just be aware there's a $20 minimum charge per guest for reservations (#1). The classic Tokyo tonkotsu is an absolute must for all first timers. The broth is rich and creamy, and full of flavor. The noodles are perfectly complemented by the juicy char siu pork and flawless soft boiled egg. I am also gung ho over their spicy tsukemen, which is a nice alternative to the classic. It also fancies itself as an izakaya, so there's a lot of small plates and appetizer dishes where the presentation is on point. I'm not as enthusiastic about the chashu rice balls, but the unagi is on point. The tsukune buns are tasty, but a tinge tinier than I would have liked. Shishito peppers are fine, but better when ordered with the bites sample, which includes their ban ban chicken, and kimchi mushrooms. Desserts have not been my forté but their kakigori shaved ice is a must order. Whether it's the mango, coffee, matcha, or strawberry, they all are beautiful in their own right and taste even better. The texture is smooth and light, but it should be eaten quickly since the ice melts somewhat quickly. Service deserves a shout out for being among the most attentive group out there. They are professional, efficient, and extremely accommodating to groups both big and small. They've since opened up another location in Williamsburg (#2) and has shown a lot of promise. It's a beautiful, chic space in Midtown, and while the meal was high-quality, I'll be honest--it didn't quite give me that "wow" factor I was expecting from such a decorated spot. The chashu felt a bit underwhelming; I really wish it had that nice charred, smoky finish to give it some depth. Without that sear, it felt a little plain against such a bold, flavorful broth. During our recent stay in NYC, I was really hoping to try one of the Michelin rated restaurants. We found Tonchin Midtown on the list and wasn't too far away walking distance from our hotel. We tried to get there before 5:30pm since we didn't have reservations and didn't want to wait for over an hour. After putting our name out, we only waited for about 10 minutes and we got our own booth for our family instead of the community table. The restaurant felt very dark inside, but a hip and modern feel. The Chasiu Tokyo rice ball was the highlight, even more so than their ramen. The Tonchin Classic Tokyo Tonkotsu ramen was delicious. It had very rich flavors but not too salty. The ramen noodles were so fresh. The service felt unfriendly overall, from the hostess, to the waiter, to the people bringing out the dishes. Restaurant was around the corner from Hotel, so decided to get something warm on our first night in the city. Had to reschedule for first available date, which was our last day in NYC, 4 days away. Really glad we did, we reserved on Resy.com for mid afternoon and a few hours before our flight. Place was clean, staff was great and promptly assisted us. We started with the chicken wing appetizer, the flavor was light but with some heat, it is a whole wing (with tip still attached), and the meat was fresh... no dried blood on bone. Then we both had the Tokyo ramen. It was delicious, the broth was deep and just what we needed to warm us up before walking to the AirTran. This was the best last lunch in NYC and glad we waited to come back. If you are near, make sure to stop in. Looks like the locals loved it to. The ramen doesn't come with or have the option to order the bells and whistles to complete it, but maybe that's what it's for, so you can just enjoy what the originally crafted. They do make a chili oil, make sure to get it, it really adds another level of flavor to the soup. read more

Loved it as a non-ramen fan. Personally, I don't love going to ramen restaurants because I enjoy packaged ramen just as much. However, I really loved my experience and the food at Tonchin. We walked in and put our name down for 3 and were sat in about 30 minutes on a Saturday night. Ordered the Green Lemonade, which was a refreshing matcha lemonade with mint, for my drink. Then, enjoyed the Tsukemen dipping noodles. The broth itself was so rich and delightful, which paired well with the bouncy noodles. This is one of the few ramen places in NYC I'd happily return to, knowing that I'd like it more than my packet Shin Black. read more

I enjoyed the ramen here even though I'm not a huge ramen fan. I love the thin slices of meat, which were so buttery and soft. I got the sampler of and my favorite was definitely the mushrooms. The sauce had a nice little kick to it and it was nice and chewy. I would rank the rest most to least favorite: cucumber, shishito peppers, and lastly the edamame. I was very confused because it tasted like pesto, something I wasn't expecting. The unagi rice ball was absolutely delicious and so was the fish bun (super buttery and melt in your mouth). And the lunch portion is the same size for the ramen if you didn't get the special. They also have a vegan option! read more

Delicious ramen! I had the Smoked Dashi (pork broth with fish oil- HEAVY on the fish flavor, but so delicious). I got the lunch portion and ordered the salad as my appetizer- really flavorful kale salad. Service is great. read more

I was told this place is very good, so I came with high expectations 1. Price - it's very overpriced, chicken wings should not cost this much. 1/5 2. Tan tan noodle - it's one of the worst tan tan noodle I have had, the meat is tender but where is the flavor, for something u would recommend in a menu, I assume it should be much more delicious. 1/5 3.
