First off the service is great. Attentive and informative. Secondly the food was ok. Not great. Not amazing just very ok. We wanted to like it but just could not get there. Things just didn't taste as crisp and clean as we like out sushi to be. It was just ok.

I had a great experience during lunch at Koi on 12/4/23. At the same time, I was able to catch up with Koi's owner/operator, Chau L. Chau was the original owner of Misako when it was at Loehmann's Plaza. Misako was initially a traditional Japanese restaurant before ayce sushi became all the rage. Chau & his wife, Carol, provided excellent food and service at Misako before they sold that business and moved on to other ventures. Koi is Chau's latest venture. Upon entering, it has the look and feel of the original Misako. And if you dined at Chau's former Koi restaurant in Virginia Beach (which is now Sakatomo, on Ferrell Pkwy), you will notice the recessed seating, known as horigotatsu, has been incorporated here at his restaurant in Suffolk. I sat at the bar (kauntaseki), since I was alone. But I also wanted to catch up with Chau. I started with some shumai. It was delicious and didn't impact my appetite (but definitely had me ready for more food). I followed that up with a ginger salad and miso soup. These items came with the sushi combo that I ordered. The sushi combo (in which you can choose 2 rolls from an specific list) was comprised of the balm roll and spicy salmon roll. Both items were fantastic - the fish was fresh and tasty while they did well to appease my appetite. I usually get 3 rolls when I dine at one of Chau's spots, so I had the Sumo roll (spicy white tuna, crunch & spicy mayo inside; spicy tuna & salmon on top). The Sumo roll is amazing - I love white tuna, and the roll's spiciness was at a perfect level (I can't do VERY spicy). The entire meal was delicious and I seriously wanted to order more. From my perspective, Koi is one of Hampton Roads' top shelf sushi spots. This venue is gorgeous and clean, while the food and service are excellent. I will make more of an effort to see Chau here since Koi is so good and he goes out of his way to satisfy his customers. Thank you so much for a perfect dining experience! JV

Best sushi in the area. Food is always good and never had a bad experience. Service is exceptional.

Stopped here randomly because some of the kids were craving sushi. The yakisoba was good, poke bowl as well. The kids bento box had a perfect little variety as well (yakisoba, gyoza, tempura chicken, and an orange). We got the sushi bridge and it came with a good amount. I wish there was more of the specialty rolls instead of the single pieces but overall was still good and the quality of the sushi was great. I think the presentation of the bridge could have been better. Service was good, no issues and very kind waitress. They also had Japanese style tables which were cute for the aesthetics.

Koi is one of my favorite sushi spots! Mainly because of the bench style seating reminds me of Japan. The food is always good, and i've never had a bad experience! Whether its take out or dining in, Koi always delivers a great experience.

This restaurant is so cute I love the tables! First off the service is AMAZING! I went with my cousin who used to frequently eat here however had not been in a year, and they still remembered him! Because they are so nice they actually take the time to talk to their customers And the food... SO FRESH! The rolls were amazing shrimp tempura with eel and blue crab with avocado. And an ice cold Sapporo! The edamame was perfect also not too salty! If your in the area you won't regret stopping in for a meal!

The staff was very helpful helping me explore the menu. I'm not very experienced with high quality sushi, I'm from South Texas, but best spicy hand roll menu I've experienced so far. I overly enjoyed them. I order hand rolls often anywhere I go for sushi. I feel like this place is a great example of what traditional style sushi should look like. They have americanized sushi as well which I ordered to go as well, and it was great. Very traditional vibe when it comes to the Japanese esthetics .

Food was really good here. Came with family and we all enjoyed the fresh sushi rolls and sashimi, even the hibachi was so tasty. My sister in law enjoyed the Mosquito roll which was on the specials menu. We ordered the below and everything was tasty. Highly recommend this place! Not a lot of places does hibachi with this much flavor. All workers wore wear masks at all times. Shiu Mai appetizer Large sashimi platter Volcano roll Salmon skin hand roll Spicy tuna hand roll Mosquito roll Christmas roll Shrimp tempura roll Tuna tar tar Eel roll Salmon and scallop hibachi with fried rice

Our go to place for sushi and happy to see that the community also thinks so. Food and staff are wonderful. Typically, we always get an appetizer, Love Boat for 2, 1-2 additional rolls, and a 3 roll combo for the kids. This time we changed it up by getting their Fire Volcano Bowls for dinner instead of the boat. The owners are sweet and delightful and it's what sets them apart. Even though there are a ton of patrons they make you feel good that you returned and part of the "family". Service is definitely on the slower side, but the food is worth the wait - so again get an app, a beverage, and additional company to pass the time. Our favorite rolls are super crunch and Asahi and all of their sashimi tastes and is fresh. When ordering sushi - it is always going to take time. So when we dine-in we always try and get something from the kitchen to allow the sushi chefs time to create their masterpieces. Unfortunately due to COVID their takeout demand has increased, so be sure to allow at least 45 - 60 mins if you ordered during peak dining times. Now that indoor seating is allowed the wait time is a little longer - tonight, a Wed, I put in my order in at 6:45, person said 35 minutes it ended up being and hour and a half before it was ready. As for COVID protocols, all staff are wearing a masks appropriately, and if you aren't eating patrons should also wear masks.

Ready for some hibachi and sushi! I heard this was the best sushi hands down!

I came here tonight with my mom for dinner and she raves about this being the best hibachi spot ever and....This is probably the BEST hibachi place I've been to. The shrimp were great sizes and the steak were perfect. My vegetables were so fresh and seasoned perfectly. The YUM YUM sauce were really good. The owner is so sweet and she treats everyone like family when they come through the doors. The place is small but the service is great! I live in Hampton and traveled to Suffolk for this food and I wasn't disappointed. I left full and very satisfied. You won't regret coming here!!!!

Small quite and friendly staff that is grateful for your business and eager to feed you. No eating in due to Corona, but they still are slinging out clam shells filled with yumminess. Tonight we ordered chicken katsu dinner, yaki soba. The chicken on both was well seasoned and delicious. The yaki soba was made with fresh vegetables and the noodles were cooked perfectly. The rolls were fresh and perfectly spiced. Don't pass this place up. Corona is not slowing them down and they still are wanting to serve delicious food.

    Sushi and Sashimi Combo Dinner

We decided to try a new sushi spot and found this place. Having moved back to the US from Japan, it definitely felt like I had been transported back there when I walked through the doors. The staff is super friendly and very accommodating. I had the Sushi & Sashimi Dinner Combo and my husband had the Pork Katsu Bento Box Dinner. They were both big servings and of course, delicious!

The cooks are pretty much uniformed while there is some more interactive than others which is fine especially when I come and I'm hungry I don't like a lot of playing here and there especially when it comes to the rice give me all the rice ASAP:) This is a decent spot if you like Hibachi I believe they have sushi as well that's made fresh. My only side... When you walk in you smell an overwhelming scent of grease/oil in the air. I don't know if it's from the carpet that should be replaced or removed or a better ventilation system is necessary but if you can get past the smell then you should have a great experience. The food is good and you do get a lot! Our last visit we definitely had food to bring home so no complaints there. Plenty of parking as it's located in a shopping center so even if you finish eating and want to walk or continue your night... You can browse around to other shops... Dollar Tree within walking distance or decide to have drinks at the bar located either at the Outback or AJ Gators both within walking distance. Try them out if you're in the area! SKIP Kotobuki in Norfolk - Worst Sushi Experience EVER…read more Kotobuki in Ghent is a disaster. I gave this long-running spot a second chance, after a poor first experience, and it was a mistake. A friend insisted we return, and the service was shockingly bad, the sushi was subpar and the overall experience was the worst. From the moment you walk in, Kotobuki screams neglect: dead plants, servers dressed like they're doing yard work and a pervasive smell of old fry oil. We had reservations for the "traditional Japanese" sunken-table room, where we removed our shoes and climbed into our seats. One dirty pair of slippers sat at our table, while a random pair of construction boots lay abandoned nearby. The "ambiance" was completed by 70s soft rock -- Lionel Richie instead of "traditional Japanese" music. Our server took my order for a dirty Stoli martini, then disappeared for an absurd amount of time only to return and say they couldn't make it -- with no explanation. We hunted through the limited menu while our server vanished completely. The owner eventually stopped by, and I had to specifically request a sushi list. Tired of sitting cross-legged, I briefly put my feet into the pit under the table. Rather than place my bare feet on the filthy floor, I slipped my shoes back on for a moment. That's when the owner's daughter stormed over and aggressively accused me of saying, "Screw you and screw Kotobuki -- I'm not following the rules!" She launched into a rude, insulting lecture about "Japanese custom" while I sat there stunned. I immediately took my shoes off again, just to de-escalate, but the evening was ruined. No customer should be verbally assaulted over something as basic as not wanting bare feet on an obviously dirty floor. In an awkward position, not wanting to ruin the evening, I ordered my food. The sake was watery and flavorless, the house salad was sad, wilted iceberg lettuce drowning in bottled ginger dressing, and the sushi arrived lukewarm with questionable rice that called for a palate blinding amount of wasabi. It was boring, poorly prepared, and far below average. This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. Hand to God! Had this not been a special evening with a dear friend, I would have walked out the second the owner's daughter chastised me at the table. Management at Kotobuki clearly doesn't care about customer service or basic standards -- especially when family members are allowed to treat patrons this way. "Japanese tradition" doesn't excuse poor hygiene, rude staff or substandard food. In America, we have health codes for a reason. If you want decent sushi in Norfolk, go literally anywhere else. Kotobuki is just a lazy dive. There's nothing special on the menu, very little sushi selection and nobody seems to care. If you choose to ignore this warning, lower your expectations folks, you are about to be disappointed. The only thing good about this restaurant, is the opportunity to tell you how much it sucked.

When the dish came out, it was basically a 50/50 split of salmon and tuna. Most other restaurants usually include more variety in their sashimi deluxe, such as shrimp, yellowtail, tilapia, or even krab, even with a substitution, so I was already a little disappointed. Overall the tuna looked quite gray in color, and the salmon was noticeably dry. Definitely not the quality I expected for the price. What really upset me was the bill at the end. The menu listed the sashimi deluxe at $25, but my check showed $33. I politely pointed this out to the waitress, and she said she would speak with the manager. When the manager came over, I was told that the waitress was new and that there is an extra charge for substitutions. The problem is that neither the waitress nor I was informed about this beforehand. What made the experience worse was the manager's attitude. She came across as rude and completely unconcerned when I explained why I was frustrated. I understand businesses have policies, but customers should be informed about additional charges before ordering, not surprised when the check arrives. I'm sharing this review so future customers are aware to ask questions about possible hidden or unexpected charges before ordering.
