Gyoza was fine. Miso soup was watery and lacked all the flavor. Sushi roll fell apart and smelt like bad fish, and the hand roll ... well let's say I could have done better. Waitress didn't clear the table the entire time we sat there. The mold above our heads didn't help with the ceiling tile about to bust from moisture. This restaurant is easy to miss if traffic is heavy. I was in between business appointments and had extra time to enjoy a late lunch. What a great find! The menu is ample and offers many choices for those who are not interested in Sushi. Not me! The choice of À la carte Sashimi with several seafood choices won me over immediately. I love tuna and salmon so I added soup and other sides! I was dining in between the traditional lunch and dinner hours so the attention I received was outstanding. This is not your usual grocery store sushi. The sushi chef was exceptional and my waitress attentive. The presentation was worthy of an Academy Award. My husband chose Sakura for his Father's day dinner. The place was cute, no nonsense. We were welcomed with very nice pickled cucumbers and pineapple smoothie, which were both very good. We chose the shrimp and vegetable tempura, which was very good. The fried calamari was very overcooked and chewy. I was also underwhelmed with the soup (bland) and salad (overly soaked in a bland dressing). We got the short ribs, which was tasty, and steak teriyaki, which was also very good. The sushi came and it was gorgeous! Sushi was fresh and very good, though they did very a bit carried away with the mayo! The food was just meahh..I was unable to eat the salad which just consisted of iceberg lettuce 2 under ripe tomatoes and what appeared to be some white chunky dressing that I felt was either spoiled or left out in thr kitchen. Whatever it was I chose not to attempt to eat it. Miss soup is served before the appetizer. I ordered a salmon roll. There was no chill to this sushi. Grayish Wasabi, and pale pickled ginger. Our meals came out quick really just after the sushi app. My Habachi beef had the distinct taste of meat that was not fresh. I ate the rice. Hubby enjoyed his combo meal. This restaurant has no Habachi table, no visible Sushi bar. We were giving a "extra sushi" when we were leaving. This was from the same bag that was just sitting on the counter when we arrived. Ordered off doordash for lunch and this was a waste of $20. The rolls were gross. I have never seen a shrimp tempura roll batter like sweet n sour chicken and it had crab in the tempura roll?! Like why then I also got a sweet potato roll and the potato's were still hard not even cooked and no eel sauce over them which I thought was standard but guess not. I forget the name of the other roll in super duper roll that was the only one that I ate. Def wouldn't recommend anything cooked here maybe raw is their speciality bc this was a waste of money read more

My husband and I arrived around 1 pm for lunch and the restaurant was empty. We were warmly greeted and seated at a booth. Our server welcomed us with a complimentary cucumber salad and a shy smile. We ordered some sake and looked over the menu, starting with the spring rolls appetizer, which came with ponzu sauce -- very tasty. We ordered 4 rolls and while we waited the server brought us complimentary pineapple slushes. They were cold and refreshing and included small bits of pineapple to chew on. We were also given complimentary miso soup, which was warm and delicious, along with two dumplings that my husband especially enjoyed. When our four rolls arrived, they were served in two decorative boats with umbrellas and plastic flowers. It was a lovely -- if slightly over-the-top -- presentation for four rolls, but still appreciated. The rolls themselves were just okay, not great, and since we were already full from all of the complimentary items, we boxed them up to take home. We also took back half a bottle of Black and Gold sake, which came in a complimentary gift bag. The sake had been recommended over the smaller bottle of Junmai Ginjo but was a little too sweet for my taste. When the check arrived, we noticed a fifth roll listed as "free." We hadn't ordered it, but since there was no charge, we didn't question it. As we left, the server handed us that roll -- a complimentary volcano roll -- neatly packaged in a to-go container. So why only 3 stars? Here's what went wrong: - Upon entering, the restaurant didn't smell very good. - Once seated, we noticed the space felt a bit shabby and not especially clean. - The panko on the rolls was stale and chewy, so we scraped it off. - Our server was polite but shy and not very engaging. - Despite the restaurant being empty, two other tables were seated directly in front of and behind us -- uncomfortably close in an otherwise empty restaurant. - The bathrooms were poorly maintained and not pleasant. We really wanted to like this place and even drove 30 minutes from Norfolk after reading the reviews. Unfortunately, the issues outweighed the positives, and we don't plan to return -- even with the $10 gift certificate we received with the check. read more

We have been coming to Sakura for a couple of years and unfortunately we have noticed the quality declining. I know after last night we will not be back. The restaurant was moderately busy. We were seated very quickly. We got our drinks within five minutes as well as the complementary drink they provide and the plate of cucumbers. Then we waited close to 20 minutes before anyone came around to take our order. And it seemed like there was no rhyme nor reason to who stopped by our table after that to check on us; it was always someone different it seemed. Soup came out fairly quickly, but the other food took quite a bit longer. I ordered the vegetable tempura dinner and was given the appetizer. Because service seems so slow I did not say anything. The sushi that my husband ordered didn't come out for a good 20 minutes later and I had already finished eating by then. His sushi was poorly prepared and looked like someone definitely was in a rush to plate it. And since I got the appetizer instead of the actual meal, I had to flag down an employee and ask for a side of fried rice because the appetizer really wasn't enough. They may have been understaffed; I'm not sure. But the service has declined and so has the food. It didn't help that near the end of the evening I went to use the restroom and as soon as I walked into that back hallway, it reeked of cigarette smoke. I'm guessing that maybe an employee was smoking by a back door or something, but it was overpowering. I will say that employees there are always friendly, but our experience last night was just not good and it's been that way for the last several visits and I know we will not be back. read more

Amazing Service! Came here to eat with a couple of co-workers after a long day at work and I wasn't dissapointed!!!! We ordered their dinner bento boxes that came with so many extra things, not to mention, there were so many freebies! Second visit, this time for lunch. No wait at all on a Tuesday as 12:30. Peaceful interior with expected decorations. Was given a cucumber salad and a pineapple smoothie sample at no cost. I had the two roll lunch - mango/shrimp roll and Boston roll. The Boston roll was a little bland, but still good. The mango shrimp is excellent. This place is really overlooked on the outside. The sushi is really delicious. I grabbed a McArthur roll and a Phoenix roll. Both came to the quickly (the fried shrimp inside were still warm). The McArthur is my favorite so far. It has fried shrimp, crunchies, and spicy tuna on the inside. They throw avocado and salmon on the outside with some yum yum sauce. The other one is interesting: the Phoenix roll is fried shrimp, spicy tuna, and avocado on the inside, then salmon and a thin slice of LEMON on the outside. They are both pretty good. No to mention the cucumber, miso soup and hospitality! read more

I went to this place for the first time during a date with my boyfriend. When we first walked in we were greeted with a very unpleasant aroma, but I ignored it as we sat down. The service wasn't terrible, but the coke I drank had a strange ratio of syrup to soda water. I decided to try to house salad and immediately regretted it. It was super runny and strangely white. It tried to resemble a ginger dressing I normally like at other restaurants, but tasted extremely old and borderline rancid. The bathrooms were rundown and dirty along with the floors in the dining area. I don't understand how it has 4 stars as the experience beginning to end was completely unacceptable. We had one of the BEST lunch dining experiences at Sakura yesterday! The waitress was super kind and very efficient. She said she was new, but it wasn't showing! She brought out some free pineapple slushies in a small, cute glass. Those were so refreshing after a hot day at the zoo. She also brought us a complementary plate of pickled cucumbers. We ate every one! So yummy! I ordered the Japanese noodles with chicken - so flavorful and delicious! We also ordered the volcano roll. As the picture shows, it came out with an adorable kitty light. My grandson was impressed! We were charged for a yellowfin that wasn't brought out, so the owner took it off our bill PLUS gave it to us with a free volcano roll. This place is highly underrated. The bento was HUGE, I couldn't finish it all so I had to take a box home (same with the crabmeat salad ). I'm not the biggest fan of miso but it was also good, the volcano roll was VERY good.
