The pudding was good, but I don't know if it was $11 good. I like how smooth, soft and silky it was, but it was too sweet for me and did not have enough sesame flavor. However, you can't mix your orders with anything from Cafe Maiko so expect to pay separately. They also don't accept cash either so make sure to have your card prepared. Each order comes with a "space baggie" that includes a card, spoon, and coconut flakes. The coconut pudding flavor was consistent and strong throughout every order. You can definitely taste the coconut! Personally I enjoyed the coconut pudding on its own but if you wanted some crunch and extra sweetness, adding the flakes would help. Mango: the cubed mangoes were always super sweet and fresh. Mixed Fruit: included watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries and blueberries. Fruit was distributed through the pudding and everything tasted great. Great variety option. Taro: included actual taro. The flakes complemented the thick, mild taro by adding some sweetness. Overall I enjoy the concept and execution. The prices do vary a lot but I commend the consistently high quality of puddings. The only downside is ordering could be confusing and inconvenient for newcomers. While the menu is relatively simple, they usually run out of most flavors by the late afternoon and there's no way to gauge that since everything is hidden behind Cafe Maiko's front and the cups on display aren't reflective of what's left. Staff members have to check in the back and could lead to a back and forth several times before settling on an available option. Now it shares a storefront with Matcha Tea and the sign will not say Kokonut Dessert, but ONLY Marcha Tea. As of 9/4/20. I got two jars to try: the mixed fruit and coconut, plus the manga and coconut. The fruit is really high quality fresh fruit. The mangos must have been some of the sweetest best mangoes I have had in my life. The coconut creme is delicate and light with low sweetness. There are optional toasted coconut flakes to put on top. I had the *Coconut Pudding w/ Red Bean and Taro* for $8.50. Most of their jars with fruits do range from $9-11. Not a problem for me. The dessert was refreshing with a subtle, but clean coconut flavor in its soft, gelatinous form. Very little extra sugar is added. This was very evident because even the taro and red bean portion of my dessert was low in sugar. Quite the refreshing change from the overly sweet, nearly cloying desserts one is accustomed to. The pack of toasted coconut they do provide you with (for $ now) does enhance the dessert dramatically as it not only adds a toasty flavor, but some texture as well. They are co-located with Shared Kitchen Rentals, but you can't go inside during these times so I have no idea what the space looks like. Call ahead and they will meet you outside a facility door with a copy of their menu. Prices for the coconut puddings in a jar ranged from $7.50 to $9.50. A pudding in a young, hollowed-out coconut would set you back an even $10. Of the different flavored toppings, the one which piqued my interest was the peach gum. The pudding was very light and when I mixed it with the peach gum, it reminded me of eating grass jelly with syrup. A stronger coconut taste would have enhanced the product. I guess it's why they provided a tiny packet of coconut flakes as a supplement. I do wish the serving size was larger for the price. Instead of an unusual jar size of 14.5 oz (430 mL), a full 16 oz or 500 mL would have been appropriate. It'd also be beneficial if the business could somehow operate a stand-alone booth or service window to get themselves more visibility. If you aren't into sweet, heavy, food coma inducing desserts then this place is for you!!Add the coconut flakes and wow... different texture, and a bit sweeter so you can adjust it as you please. The pudding itself is on the softer side, not crumbly to the touch but not the most firm. If I were to compare the texture to tofu, it would be right in between soft and medium tofu. The taste is wonderful, so light, so many coconut notes that blend the whole shebang of fruits (strawberries honeydew blueberries and pears I think??) together so well. Literally perfection in a cup! Did I mention the packaging as well? Everything is super aesthetic and premium! A bit pricey on my scale at $9.5 but it is absolutely a must try. I am not going to lie, the cute containers with beautifully colored fruit drew me in. But, it was the wonderful flavor and texture that had me return and will make me want to continue coming back. The coconut pudding is luxurious tasting, it is silky smooth and has a wonderful fresh coconut flavor, not a fake or imitation flavor. The peach gum is very good and as soon as I finished my dessert, I had to google what it was. My sister got the coconut pudding with strawberries and she really enjoyed it as well. The next time I ordered, I got the straight coconut pudding. It again was great! I actually had it for breakfast. It eats a little like yogurt but is not overly sweet. It has probably just enough sugar to make it feel like a treat but you do not feel weighted down or sick after eating the whole thing. So why the 4 stars? Three reasons. First reason is that upon our walking in, there is nothing telling you that the matcha restaurant is completely separate from the Kokonut Dessert bar and you kind of wait aimlessly for someone to help you. Second, the person supposed to be working the Kokonut dessert bar seems less than thrilled to have us there. She looked at us and sat down on a stool and texted on her phone for a good 5 minutes. Once the person working the matcha area came over and we tried to order, we were told to order from the lady sitting on the stool. At that point she asked us what she could get for us. It was kind of uncomfortable. Third and last, the strawberries in my sister's dessert were on the verge of being too old. They were a little squishy and very dark red. Personally, I think they should have been thrown out a day or two earlier, but I get it, small business trying to save money. Overall, I have and will return. This is my second visit to Kokonut Dessert Bar. I originally visited their location in Costa Mesa and excited to see that they've expanded to San Diego. It's a very peculiar set up. They sell their coconut desserts right out of their kitchen rental which is shared with a few other restaurants. There is no store front. It's tucked away in a business plaza off of Flanders drive in Mira Mesa. Just look for the door that another reviewer had posted and wait curbside or park your car. Call and someone will come out to your car with an iPhone/4 square so you can pay via credit card. The experience felt like I was buying a bootleg purse in an alleyway but it all worked out. Since I was on my way to a friend's house for dinner i thought I'd bring some coconut pudding for dessert. I ordered 4 of the coconut puddings and 4 of the coconut shavings toppings which give the pudding a nice crunch. My friends really enjoyed the pudding, they said it tasted like eating a coconut right out of the shell and reminded them of a very fluffy flan but without all that sweetness. Presentation wise, the desserts are served in plastic containers that are reusable and stacked 2 in a sealed bag that you have to rip like a new bag of chips.
